The chief aim of the Gospel is the glory of God. But this is the way that God is chiefly glorified. By bringing sinners back into a relationship with Himself in such a way that His grace is magnified and His justice is upheld.
This is the glory of the Gospel. No human being, no angel, no created being could come up with such a glorious plan. How could the justice of God be upheld and the grace of God be magnified? Surely, there would be no way.
Surely, there would be no way.
God would have to sacrifice one or the other. God would, surely, if He was going to rescue sinners, if He was gonna bring sinners back into a relationship with Himself, surely, surely, He would have to let go of His justice.
He would have to do something to sweep sin under the rug and just say, oh, you know what? It's no big deal, better luck next time. But the glory and beauty of the Gospel is not that the justice of God was dispelled with,.
But that the justice of God was upheld because there was a substitute,.
A righteous one who willingly took our place. Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous. Beloved, this is what Christianity is all about, that He might bring us to God. All the beautiful facets of the Gospel are serving this one chief end, that Jesus is bringing us to God.
In other words, the Gospel is not a way.
For you merely to get to heaven.
What's the Gospel for? It's so I'll go to heaven. Not merely a way where you won't go to hell. What's the Gospel for? So I won't go to hell, I don't wanna go to hell. And as we've already talked about all those other nonsensical things, the Gospel's not about get rich quick scheme or something like that.
But what is it for then?
What is the chief aim of the Gospel? What is it about? If it's not about getting to heaven or it's not merely about escaping hell, although listen, those are good things,.
Don't get me wrong.
I don't wanna go to hell and I do wanna go to heaven.
Those are good things. But understand something, the glorious point and chief aim of the Gospel is what? That Christ would bring us to God. To bring us to God.
Our money will fade away.
Our health will fade away. Prosperity will fade away.
One day, one day, I hope it's not soon, one day America will fade away.
All of these things will fade away. Why would we make these things the chief end of the Gospel? Why would we make the blood, the precious blood of Christ about these temporal and paltry things when we are offered something greater in the Gospel?
We are offered something eternal. We are offered something for which our soul is made. We are offered God. The ultimate gift of the Gospel is God. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous that he might bring us to God.
This is astounding.
You were created for God, by God, but have rebelled against God in your sin. But now if you're a Christian, you are as Jared Wilson writes, saved from God, to God, by God, through God, for God. Your ultimate purpose is to know God in Christ and it is by the suffering of Christ that we have been brought into a relationship with the Triune God.
A relationship with the Triune God. Listen, this is staggering. The implications here are massive. The ramifications are mind-blowing. The Gospel explodes over us with news that seems too good to be true.
This has gotta be too good to be true. But it's not. We who are helpless and hopeless and foul and wicked are brought to God by the sufferings of Christ. On your best days and on your worst days, Christian, you have been brought near to God through the Gospel.
Not your clean house. Not your full bank account. Not your perfect driving record.
Not your morality.
Not your good deeds or your kindness to others. Not yourself or something that you do, but the Gospel is the ground for your relationship with God. And by the finished work of Christ, you are clothed in righteous robes by faith,.
Through grace,.
And brought into a personal relationship with God.
Mind-blowing.
If you are not in Christ today,.
This is what you need to understand.
God stands opposed to you because of sin. If you remain in this state,.
You will meet the righteous wrath of God.
For all eternity in hell.
But look at the glory of what we've just spent a few minutes together looking at. For Christ also suffered once for sins. The sacrifice has been made. The substitution has been given that He might bring us to God.
Why would you go your own way? If you're hearing, why would you go that way? The suffering of Christ promises a reconciliation with God if you will have Christ this moment by faith. Today is the day of salvation.
Don't wait till tomorrow. Don't wait five minutes from now. Don't wait till next week. Believe this good news.
Renounce your sin. Renounce your works. Renounce all that you are.
Repent and believe the Gospel. Clothed with Christ this very instant by faith. Call out to Him now in your heart to save you from your sin.
What do I got to do, preacher?
Call out to Him now, even in your heart, to give you the faith you need to cling to Christ, to be the God to you that He has promised to be if you will cling to Christ in faith as your only suitable and all-sufficient Savior.
If you will, you may come to Christ right now in faith. Do so. You can have God if you will repent and believe the Gospel.
Because of the good news of this.
