DAY 194: 2 Chronicles 27; Isaiah 9–12
DAY 194: 2 Chronicles 27; Isaiah 9–12
Jotham reigns faithfully in Judah, strengthening the nation because he orders his ways before the Lord. Yet the people continue acting corruptly, proving that even a good king cannot transform an unrepentant nation. Meanwhile, Assyria is rising, Israel is weakening, and darkness is spreading across the land. Into that darkness, Isaiah announces the coming light of the Messiah. A Child will be born, a Son will be given, and the government will rest upon His shoulders. He will reign as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace, establishing a kingdom that will never end. Assyria may serve temporarily as the rod of God’s anger, but the proud empire is still only an instrument in the Lord’s hand and will itself be judged. Human kingdoms become stumps, but from the stump of Jesse a righteous Branch will arise. Jesus Christ is that promised King. He is the Spirit-filled Son of David who judges with righteousness, defends the weak, gathers the nations, and brings true peace. God’s anger is turned away because Christ bears wrath at the cross, and His people draw joyfully from the wells of salvation because the risen King pours out His Spirit. When earthly kingdoms shake and darkness grows, God’s answer is not panic or political strength, but the everlasting reign of His Son.
