Luke 14:1-6
Well, good morning everyone. What a blessing it is. We know the Lord the Lord has said this is the day the Lord has made. Let us let us be glad and rejoice in it. This being a market day for our souls.
I'm so privileged to serve you in this capacity. I want to first on the offset. Before we launch out into our text this morning is say, please bear with me I think I'm taking four different types of medications right now because of the pollen.
So in a way, I feel like a desert within my nasal cavity. All the while a faucet on the front end on my nose but uh, I know God uses weaknesses and You know first and then secondly I want to say I have no authority zero.
Zero.
Crisis preeminent in his church and by God's grace, I desire that he speak.
Today.
That's proven by he has the only right to speak to his church. It's a fearful thing to fall in the hands of a holy God. You know everything that we do has eternal consequences. This morning. I would like to just start with prayer and beseech the Lord Holy Spirit to aid us because we're entering into a Time that the Lord has said remember.
Remember because we're so prone to forget. We're so Prone to stray the God we love as the song says Lord. I feel it Lord. I feel it. There's a rip current going on right now and all of us if you're not even aware of it That's saying be distracted this morning.
It's okay to be drowsy with holy things. It's okay to be flippant and take things holy common. That's going on right now within you without you even knowing it. Because their heart is deceitful. We wicked above all things.
But by the Spirit of God who is greater than he that's in us. Can help us. You know that and that's what? We asked this morning is Jesus prayed Lord father sanctify them by thy word thy word is truth and that's.
So let's let's pray Father as we just saying how sweet and awful is the sound? Lord your grace is amazing. We stand at all this morning that as the hymn writer said Lord, why was I guessed? Who made it for you to differ today if you're puffed up in pride?
Lord we thank you for the living word That became flesh. Born in a manger to unknown parents in a basically unknown town. Small Lord, but you never decide to despise the day of small things. So Lord, I pray that you'll Give us ears to hear what the Spirit has to say.
Lord the speaker needs help. Your hearers need aid. It's my job Lord this morning to serve your people and I want them to hear from you and You'd be glorified and their hearts be refreshed to be more obedient and fervor and glorifying you.
So we ask this in Jesus name. Amen. So this morning I've titled this message a lot of us. How many of you by show of hands have heard of a lazy Susan? It's pretty common, you know, I didn't know about it much and we didn't have one in my house growing up but be bought one and.
Put all the.
Dishes on the roundabout. And just spin it and everyone you don't even have to serve. You don't have to pass it around everyone can just spin it around as they need. But you know, we see a picture and I it's so beautiful that our Lord wasn't an ascetic.
He wasn't into asceticism. He loved being with people love souls. How precious is one soul, you know? As we just are, you know, we're we hold up our dear pastor that just lost his bride. It's our job as a church to love him.
It's our job is to pray for him to hold him up during this time. God is pleased in this. Ezekiel says these watchmen Have a Great duty and if you think your duty something I'm sure right now. I'm sure he covered your prayers in these hours of The Lord meeting him and he's going he this is his valley.
But we know the Lord is he loved the valley.
That's where we see clearly, you know.
Just to jump into this if you will take your Bibles and turn to Luke chapter 14. The gospel never gets old. Don't you love the gospel. God offer sinful people eternal life. God offer sinful people eternal life.
That was Tim Chalice. I saw that acronym and I said I'm gonna use that. You know why because we're sinful people and we need a physician. And you know he desires. You know in this message this morning.
I want to talk about if you will look at Luke 14. And I've titled this Lessons from around the table learning from Jesus. Jesus loved hospitality. So should you and it's convicting because that's like when's the last time have we done?
You know, I know brother Zach being I know many people up with their homes pastor, but shouldn't we be following the way of the master not only just receiving but giving. So this really should stir us up in a way.
Because conviction is our friend and if we don't take the medicine and use it wisely will be a no-good. This morning. I love the book of Luke because you know, he's a physician. But here's a foot. Here's another physician the great physician and you notice this in Luke chapter 14 we're gonna survey if I want to look over the first 24 verses here and Potentially break this up in a three-part sermon Lord willing if God permits.
But uh, I would like to read it in this context. So let's let's let's enter into God's Holy Word together. I'm reading from the New King James Version Luke 14. I'm reading Luke 14 1 through 20 1 through 25 1 through 24.
I'm sorry. Now what happened as he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath. That they watched him closely and behold. There was a certain man before him who had dropsy in Jesus answering Spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees saying is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?
But they kept silent and he took him and healed him. Let him go. Then he answered them saying which of you having a donkey some would say a son there. Having a son or an ox that is falling into a pit.
Will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day and they could not answer him regarding these things. So he told a parable to those that were invited and when he noted how they chose the best places saying to them.
When you were invited.
By anyone to a wedding feast do not sit down in the best place at least one more honorable than you be invited by him. And He who invited you and he and him come to and him say to you Give place to this man and then you begin with shame to take the lowest seat.
But when you're invited go and sit down in the lowest place so that when you're invited. When he who invited you comes he may say to you friend go up higher then. You will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you.
For whoever exalts himself Will be humbled and whoever humbles himself Will be exalted. Then he also said to him who invited him When you give a dinner or supper do not ask your friends your brothers your relatives nor your rich neighbors.
Least they also invite you back and you be repaid. But when you give a feast invite the poor the maimed the lame the blind and you will be blessed because They cannot repay you for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.
Now when one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things he said to him Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. Then he said to him a certain man gave us a great supper and invited many.
And he sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited come for all things are now ready. But they all with one accord begin to make excuses. He first said to him. I have bought a piece of land Our piece of ground.
I must go and see it. I Asked you to have me excused and another said I had bought five yoke of oxen. I'm going to test it. I asked you to have me excused. Still another said I have married a wife therefore I cannot come.
So that servant Cain reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant Go out quickly into the streets in the lanes of the city and bring in here the poor the main the lane and the blind and the servant said mastery it is done as you have commanded and Still there is room in the master said to the servant go out into the hot Into the highways and the hedges and compel them to come in that my house may be filled.
For I say to you that none of those Men who were invited shall taste my supper. This is one single discourse of a mill and a prominent Pharisee if you look up in verse 14 one We see the setting. Let's let's talk about the setting here.
This is months before Jesus Jesus is uh Just months only months away until his death. He had just lamented over Jerusalem. When you look back in the chapter 13 verses 34 and 35 He says Oh Jerusalem. Oh Jerusalem.
It's a lament. It's a compassionate lament That they were without a shepherd being led astray by false teachers Doubling down in their hardness and the question is for you and I today. Are you getting his lessons?
Are you learning what he's teaching? Because they're.
Stooped in.
Their cup is overflowing.
With themselves.
Here we have the beloved Luke the physician.
Recording this.
For our admonition in verses 1 through 6 This is part 1 and if you look at this the backdrop is hypocrisy and You have the Lord's healing ministry of showing pity and compassion upon the creatures that he has made.
That's the backdrop of this hypocrisy. And then verses 7 through 14 we have true humility and then verses 15 to the end We have the hesitancy. So the main theme of this whole section right here is dealing with that rip current that I was talking about self-aholism.
Self-interest. Self-interest hope self that is the worst of all. So let's look at this. You know. It's Jesus said you killed all the prophets that were sent to you. John the Baptist was a very an austere austere man living in the wilderness eating honey.
And then Jesus comes dines with sinners, and they call him a glutton and a drunkard. So let's get this straight today the Word of God is examining you not it not you it. Because here's the problem. The heart of the problem is man's Stubborn will of not wanting to submit to the authority of God.
So notice this it wasn't the the the messenger. It was the message That that ultimately people hate. So this morning. Will you do you take great joy as the law of the Lord is perfect converting the souls of men.
Can you say with Psalm 119 97? Oh Lord? I love your law. I.
Love it. I.
Love it more than anything. It is my one desire one passion my one focus is to love you and to make you know. So let's set the table here.
Now what happened?
He went into the ruler of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath and They washed him closely. Does it seem kind of like oh, that's so nice of them to invite him in. Sounds closely it sounds good right, but notice this.
They washed him closely. He had just told them of their hypocrisy. He had just told them and pronounced a Judgment on these people. Now what happened. He went into the house of the ruler of the Pharisees.
This was a prominent ruler probably very wealthy part of the Sanhedrin. The Pharisees were born their names separatist. They wanted to be separate, but they swung into the ditch of the flesh Wanting to Insulate their own pride wanting to insulate their own will and not submit to the revealed will of God.
They perverted God's law.
Perverted God's law.
The law as mother Ben has shared with us many times. It's a mirror a muzzle and a map. I think that's probably a Puritan but. But you know it's to show us as John Bunyan said it says run John run. But it gives me no legs or strength to do it, but the gospel comes and bids us.
We mount up on the wings of eagles through Christ because he has poured in us. Lavishly poured in us the riches of his glory. That now out of that unforeseen treasury we have a love debt. You and I all have a love debt.
We're to owe no man nothing, but we all have a love debt. Now what happened as he went into the Pharisees? To eat bread on the Sabbath day. Notice this this is this last and final meal on the Sabbath day.
Is it you ask yourself? Why is Jesus? Partic particularly picking this Sabbath day. It's not a coincidence. That's the question why I see this is the seventh and final Meal with the Pharisees on the Sabbath.
Notice this seventh and final the Sabbath. He rested on the seventh day. I'm not trying to read into the text of numerology, but You might want to listen. Look the Sabbath was only A foretaste and shadow.
What Christ would fulfill. Notice there's no more mention in the New Testament. Christ said come unto me. They venerated a day and missed the bright morning star. Now what happened when he went into the one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath day?
They watched him closely. Can you imagine this this is the Lord God Almighty carnate God in the flesh. In this creature. Plotting. And it says in verse 2 and behold. That's a divine highlighter. Take your highlighter.
This is standing on the admire. What's going on right here. This is a divine highlighter. Pay attention. There's jewels and blink. There's things to be gleaned here for your admonition for your own godliness.
And behold what's what's there to behold. There was a certain man before him who had dropsy. Has anybody ever heard of what dropsy is. Do you even have a? So dropsy is another word. My wife being a nurse told me.
Is.
Edema.
Edema is the swelling of your limbs. Fluid that comes out. I mean it doesn't discharge from you, but it you get so swole swollen. Because of internal failure of organs he was the internal was failing that was causing the external to fail and swell and.
Sometimes it has to be drained. So here's a poor pitiful man. You would think is he a drop-in or is he a decoy. I think you can pretty much read through the lines here. They were watching him closely.
Notices they had to prep their meals and that bread had to be made the day before. Oh didn't want to violate Sabbath laws. And I'm gonna go 3 ,000 feet out from my house. Straining not a gnat swallowing an elephant.
God forbid. Souls are perishing in front of us. Staring at her belly buttons. Notice this and Jesus answering spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees. They're waiting to say is he gonna take the bait? This is a scene.
They've got a man like a mousetrap out there. Doesn't even probably want to be there. Because you know they and I think it's in Proverbs. It says as a man thinks in his heart. So is he? But don't he says be careful.
Don't eat and drink because it's not his heart is not with you. He's using him as a pawn to trap the Lord.
Say gotcha.
Gotcha, but you know what lazy Susan he spins a table on. The best defense is a good offense. And it's the Word of God. He uses the Word of God. And Jesus answers saying to the lawyers and Pharisees saying is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?
Notice this. But they kept silent. He took him he healed him and let him go. Notice this notice this crowd of misfits. But you know notice these people could you imagine this house all these delicacies, you know, whatever they're eating.
Pharisees Jesus it doesn't say the disciples are here. I'm not going to read into the text but. This is a house. It says they were watching him closely. Isn't it so beautiful out of everybody there? The Lord's eye is upon the one that's most miserable in that beautiful.
The Lord's eye his eye is on the one that's most miserable. Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? Here is the Lord of the Sabbath. And and basically when it's when he says the Lord of the Sabbath, that means he's God.
He created it. It's his day as his same is the Lord's table. He created it. He ordained it for himself. He has the right to do what he pleases. And we submit in reverence when we don't understand it. That's what a humble heart does.
But notice this they kept silent, you know pride. Oftentimes causes us to keep silent when we're wrong. Can't confess our sin. Can you acknowledge we're wrong? That's a sad pitiful state. Notice this.
There's a here's a man outwardly that is swelling physically, but here's on the opposite is it's paradoxical here. They're swelling in their pride. Usually the ones that think they're qualified are always unqualified.
Usually the ones that think they're the outcast become the incast. And basically the incast become the outcast but they kept silent and he took him and healed him and let him go. You know notice this.
It's the mercy and pity of the compassion of a loving Savior. Because they didn't want to trap and trap themselves. So they just remained silent. But I love how mercy and compassion always wins. It always wins.
Love is the only virtue that would Enter into eternity. Outside of holiness will be made like God. Because faith will be sight there will be no more need of repentance because sin is eradicated and it's gone but love but love.
But they kept silent and he took him and healed him and let him go. Then he answered them saying Which of you having a son or an ox that has fallen into a pit? Will not immediately pull them out on the Sabbath day.
You know when you read that. From a lesser to the greater. They would go do that for a beast as brother. Ben Zack sent me John Calvin commentary, but a creature made in God's image. They would do it because ultimately it would they would go do it for their beast.
Because that means they'd have to buy another one if he died. They'd have to it's self-interest involved. Yes, of course, they would do it. How much more one in need?
Works of mercy.
The Pharisees didn't have ears to hear and only Spirit of God can illuminate this true meaning. Jesus is our Jehovah Rafa and he's still Making diagnosis today. We have a sin virus. And you know when Jesus in the Spirit of God the Holy Spirit makes the diagnosis it needs no second opinion.
It needs no second opinion. Oftentimes we hear that well, have you got a second opinion from another doctor? It needs no others it needs the interpretation of Scripture is Scripture.
The interpretation of Scripture is Scripture. So I'll.
And they could not answer him regarding these things. Jesus being the Son of Man Luke presents him. And I love that messianic title the Son of Man. He came to live among sinners to live with them to help them to die for them to bring good tidings joy life peace.
So.
This morning as There were seven Sabbath healings and we talked about why did Jesus heal on the Sabbath? He's healing this to confront their hypocrisy of the perversion of his holy law. Considering the heavy burdens that the Pharisees placed upon people.
We talked a little bit about this in Sunday school. Jesus said these people will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Man-centered humanistic worship. And collecting God's Word. If you will turn the page back over and look let's look in Luke chapter 12.
And this deals with the heart of this. This is where it starts.
And it says beware of hypocrisy in the meantime.
When an innumerable multitude of the people had gathered together, so they trampled one another He began to say to his disciples first of all beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
You know, it's yeast when it hits the bread it puffs it up. Saying be careful. It'll leaven this whole lump. What it but what it's saying is it's an influencer it's an influencer. Beware of this influencer a People that add and take away to God's Word.
And use it out of context. For there's nothing covered. This is why tells you why? For there's nothing covered that will not be revealed nor hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light.
And what you have spoken in the ear and the inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops. So, how do we avoid hypocrisy? You say God forbid. I don't want it in my heart. I hate it most in mine. My own heart, but do you see the answer?
Fear God.
Honor God the Father honor God the Son and honor God the Spirit. There's the Trinitarian answer right here. But I will show you whom you shall fear. Fear him. Who after has killed has power to cast in hell?
Yes, I say to you fear him. Where's the fear of God today?
Where is it?
Seems so simple. We have so many so many God is showing us giving us warning signs. Time after time I watch videos I'm not gonna name names. You pray for their repentance. But all the while speaking of these things speaking of the same topics yet.
Their heart is far from God.
They honor me these people honor me with their lips their lip and their life don't match. That's got to be the most miserable person on earth. They please nobody. They're not in. That's why God he said in Revelation, I'd rather be hot or cold hot or cold.
Hot or cold.
They're divided. They're tossed to and fro within. Unstable in all their ways James tells us Confess Christ before men. Here's another way to preserve yourselves from hypocrisy. Also, I say to you whoever confesses me before men Him the Son of Man will also confess before angels of God.
But he who denies me before men Will be denied before the angels. And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man It will be forgiven him but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit. It will not be forgiven now when they bring you to the synagogues and the Magistrates and authorities do not worry about how or what you shall answer or what you shall say.
For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say. So we see there a Trinitarian the father fear God. Kiss the son Spirit of God as your teacher honor God. The Father Son and Holy Spirit fear God.
That's what keeps us from the hypocrisy from within. So I want to just let's get very practical and get into this. I've made some notes here. So what does the character of a hypocrite look like we should we should know this.
We should know it and hate it within ourselves. First number one harder on others than self always critical. Always cynical wastes his energy and negative things instead of encouraged his brethren and loving what's right before him.
That's a that's a slap across my back. We can also if you can't say I'll say amen. I Mean, you know, that's we're harder on others than we are ourselves. The character of a Pharisee depends upon the place and time of day he makes an idolatry even as his devotion He thinks that's approving him a right relationship with God and not Christ's righteousness in his finished work.
We can make anything our fat our hearts are factories of idols. Watch this look the character of the hypocrite. He loves titles. He loves initials behind his name.
PhD.
Master double divinity. MDiv qualified. This is sickening. I Want to say ought to be ashamed of yourself. This is the son of man who descended from the holy heaven of heavens and chose to bear up Creatures.
Made in his image give him a breath and continue to blaspheme and with it. Trample grace under your foot daily and be so long-suffering that you would not perish. And he chose to say my great. He loved being called the son of man.
He loved being identified with sinners. Not the elitist fishermen unnamed untrained. But they knew that they've been with Jesus. That's what people should say about us. They know that we've met with Jesus.
They know we have been with him. Why by the way, we love one another. We have a debt of love until the grave. We have a debt of love until the grave. They love titles love honor love praises. Amen. Proverbs says as gold is for the refining pot silver for the furnace, but a man shall be tested.
What? By his praise. Remember what I think is Psalm 115. Not unto us of God not unto us. Not unto us, but unto your name be honor and glory and praise. What do we you had that you had not received? Everything is a gift from God.
We owe him our life. We owe him our all. In this profound you see. Omnipotent God incarnate all-powerful can speak creation into existence. He gave some examples of his almighty power and he set Ananias and Sapphira.
He set them he quickened them right there in their steed. Struck him dead and he's sitting here. Notice this. Jesus loves going into the lion's den. He's God in caught we see this Jesus. It's almost like we see the verse.
The fear of man brings a snare into your soul, but those who trust in God shall be saved. He is going into the lion's den right here on this meal. This is a blueprint for evangelism. Compassion felleth not.
Love breaks the bones. Soft word from the tongue. Proverbs tells us love number number number four. The character of a hypocrite. Loves to be seen of men. You could almost say this virtue in darkness and in Obscurity is almost like a vice to him.
I'll say that one more time. Virtue in Darkness or obscurity is almost to him a vice. Loves to be seen by men. Number Number five and the final one. I'm just share here. They say and do not. Lip in life do not match.
Lip piety needs our nose. No grace. The eye of the Lord is in every place watching evil and good. Proverbs 15 3 says. All false religion is hypocrisy. Because it does not offer these things it offers no forgiveness.
It offers no redemption. It does not please God and it gives no empowerment to do what is right. Judaism of Jesus's day was the same thing hypocrisy. Loving the shadows loving traditions of men. So when the traditions came up to the Word of God.
Traditions always went out truly a perversion of the true Old Testament worship. This is an apostate religion.
Apostate. This is tragic. I.
May have mentioned this already. The tragic of the irony that Jesus that the Jews in this day. They venerated the day and violated the day star. Jesus made the Sabbath he fulfilled the Sabbath. The seventh day disappears from all religious calendars and now no need of that.
The week that we celebrate it's the first day and that's why we come here. So I'm master set the blueprint the first day on the first day. They were in the house of the Lord. John was in the spirit of the Lord on the Lord's Day.
The Lord's Day. This Sabbath as already mentioned was a mere shadow. And we have the reality in Christ in Hebrews 3 and 4 will tell us of that rest we enter in in Christ. We can quit running and start resting.
We can quit trying and start trusting. MacArthur son, I love this point that he has if you will, can you turn with 1st Timothy? Let's turn to this pastoral epistle. 1st Timothy chapter 1 verses 8 and 9.
1st Timothy chapter 1. We know that the scribes and Pharisees Terribly misunderstood God's purpose and given the law. The law was not given as a means of achieving a righteousness before God. Notice this in 1st Timothy Chapter 1 verse 8, but we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully.
Knowing this that the law is not made for a righteous person but for the lawless and insubordinate. For the ungodly and for sinners. For unholy and profane. For murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers.
For manslayers for fornication fornicators for sodomites. For kidnappers. For liars for perjurers and If there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctoring. According to the glorious gospel of the Blessed God.
Which is committed to my trust so we see here the law is good a diagnosis our condition. It shows us our need for the great physician. MacArthur gives an excellent summary of this. The kingdom of God is for the spiritually sick who want to be healed.
The kingdom of God is for the spiritually corrupt who want to be cleansed. The kingdom of God is for the spiritually poor who want to be rich. The kingdom of God is for the spiritually hunger who want to be fed.
The kingdom of God is for the dead who desire to be alive. The kingdom of God is for outcasts who long to become God's own beloved children. That's the kingdom of God. So I want to ask this question. What is the right understanding of the law?
The law requires obedience. It requires obedience. So what's the difference between the moral law, the Ten Commandments, and the gospel? The gospel requires that we worship Him in through Christ, because outside of Christ, God is your enemy.
Today, beloved, that's the best thing that has ever happened to a child of God, being a mediator, becoming sons and daughters of the living God, where sin has estranged us, been a horrible taskmaster.
The gospel requires that we worship Him through Christ alone. The gospel gives you strength, because it's not your strength. Bestowing faith on the elect, therefore sweetening the law.
Did you hear that?
The gospel makes the law sweet. We get to see the holiness of God and His love for us in the law, His holy fervor, His holy jealousy. I'm the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Don't you love that prologue before the Ten Commandments?
He beseeches us on His pity, on His mercy, and on His compassion. Out of this, obedience only will take you so far. Love will enter into eternity. The gospel gives us strength, bestowing faith on the elect, sweetening the law, and it stirs us to serve God with a delightful heart.
So, if you will, let's turn to Romans chapter, if you can please turn to Romans chapter 13 with me, and we will wrap things up here. Wonderful chapter here, Romans 13, deals with submission, and I want to look at Romans 13.
I've been talking about this a little bit through, about the love debt. Romans 13, starting in verse 8, owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves one another has fulfilled the law.
For the commandments, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not covet, and if there's any other commandment, they are all summed up in this saying, namely, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Love does no harm to a neighbor, therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. This is the heart of Christian living, love. One could say, if he does not love his brother, he does not love God. So let me ask you this, is this the magnet that you're using to attract the world or.
To repel them?
Is this the love and pity compassion? Compassion is suffering alongside one and meeting the need. Meeting the need. Meeting a need knows no calendar, and it knows no time. Our greatest need was to be reconciled to God, and Jesus paid it all.
So this morning I want to ask something, I want to bring this home to you as a homework assignment, and I challenge, I start here first, in a very pragmatic way. That means very shoe leather faith.
Tangible.
So how can you pay this love debt to your neighbor? Who is your neighbor? Anyone that has a need. Anyone that has a need is your neighbor. So let's start very, this is the deepest desire of the regenerate heart is to make known the love of God that's been lavishly poured out in you.
Romans 5, if you flip back with me and you say, well, how can I do that? I can't do that, I can't do this. Well, here's where you're, here's your, here's your source, recognize your source. Look at Romans 5, 5, and it says, now hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
You have a treasury, it's been poured out in you. So that's, that's the starting point, it's been poured out into you. Well how do I start? Here's some very pragmatic ways. Number one, mend a quarrel.
Mend a quarrel. Is there a quarrel going on in your life? Mend it. Start mending a quarrel in your life. Number two, pray for an enemy.
Pray for an enemy.
Some of you may have a long list. Some others may be small, but pray for an enemy. And I hope you're taking notes down. Mend a quarrel. Pray for an enemy. Are your enemies? Encourage someone with a letter this week that you know needs help, that you know needs their head lifted.
Do the old school way.
Go buy an envelope and write them a letter. I'm thinking of you, I'm thankful for your life, I'm praying for you.
You're so loved.
For God so loved you, he gave his son. Oftentimes, you don't know where to start with your family. My dear wife, pleading with her father, sharing the gospel, 86 years old, Philippines. Read scripture to them.
Open up the word of God and say, I want to read you Psalms. I want to read you anything from scripture. Just read scripture to them. They don't want to hear from you, let them hear from God. And just say, hear from God, Dad, I love you.
Hear from Dad.
Hear from God, Mom. Just read the scripture to them.
Mend a quarrel.
Pray for your enemies. Encourage someone by writing them a letter this week or soon. Say thanks all day long. Stir it up.
Thank you. Thank you.
Say thanks in all things. Give thanks in all things. Send money to someone or stroke a check to someone that you know in need without them asking or anyone telling you, and send it in the mail.
Put your money where your mouth is.
The saying goes, the world has the cliches, but some of them are right. We need to live out what we speak. If we love, we labor, we give, because if we want to be loved, we love. If we want to receive, we need to give.
And it's reciprocal.
Mend a quarrel. Pray for your enemies. Encourage someone by writing them a letter. Say thanks all day long. Give a gospel track out during your lunch break. Think it'd do us well sometimes to maybe skip a meal, that we might be homesick.
And understand, you know, do you think about this, that a man that's starving, do you think he sleeps over his food? Do you think he sleeps over his food, the man that's starving?
No.
And last, I'm going to leave that up to you.
You know, and throughout scripture, the Lord has admonished us to love. Take time to be holy. So I'll just repeat it.
Say thanks all day. Pray for your enemies. Encourage someone by writing them a letter. Send money to someone in need.
Write a check.
This is a very pragmatic way we can pay this love debt, because notice this. Jesus came, like as he did with Zacchaeus,. I must suck with you. We were once his enemies.
And you know what?
He sucked with us. He made a table for us.
Take and eat.
This is my body. Do this in my remembrance.
Take and drink.
This is my blood. Do this in my remembrance. Forget me not. Forget me not. Forget me not. For taste and see that the Lord is good. So in doing this, brothers and sisters, I know this can be convicting.
I hate the hypocrisy within my own heart. And may we start, when the Lord shows us our sin, may we not be silent. May we confess it. When we confess our sins, we're saying, I'm going to line up with you, Lord.
I'm lining up.
I've got out of line. I need to get back in line.
Simple as that.
I've got out of line. It's good to be in line with you. It's good to be under the shadow of your wings. It's good to have the favor of God upon you and the smile of God upon you. And now we can cry, Father, Abba, Father.
Because Christ has judicially forgiven us. And then out of that, we have parental forgiveness from the washing of his word daily. Judicial forgiveness, parental forgiveness from our daily sins. And then he says, do unto others as I've done unto you.
Brotherly forgiveness. Forgive a brother if he's offended you. Forgive him. Go unto him. Don't let someone talk behind their back. Go to him. Some of us are stubborn, stray cats, and we're hard to talk to.
We're stiff-necked. Pray and ask God to help us with these things, to love one another, to hold one another up.
This is all we got.
You know, you're a love gift from God.
What a privilege. What a delight.
And you know, if grace is not amazing today, if you don't stand in awe of who he is, can you remember that second part of that song? Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, who saved a wretch like me. Have you forgotten that today?
Have you forgotten that? Let us not be like this man with edemia on the inward man, knowledge puffing us up without living it fleshly daily unto our neighbors. Our neighbor, God doesn't need our good works.
Our neighbor needs it. We've got a lot of work to do while there's still daylight. You know what? We can encourage one another in this journey. It's a beautiful journey because soon, you know, we want our works, when we lay them down, we don't smell like smoke because they're all burn up because they had no eternal value.
You know, I don't want to smell like I've been in a fire. You know, I want to be perfumed with the sweetness and the aroma of a life of sacrifice and thanksgiving unto God. That's pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God.
So let's pray.
