Hey guys, it's Keith and welcome back to another movie reaction and review today.
We're going to be looking at the 1972 film a thief in the night now I want to say from the outset I've never seen
this film before.
I posted that on Twitter the other day and dr James White said he wasn't sure we could any longer be friends.
Apparently, there's an entire generation of people who were forced to watch this film.
It's a rapture film.
I do know that but I don't know much more about it.
There were people on Twitter who said that it kept them up at night that it was scared an entire generation.
Some people said their churches made them watch it.
Some people said they watched it on New Year's and like it was like a watch party and Had watched it in youth
group or at church camp and things like that.
But I grew up in a church that I don't remember seeing it in church.
I've never seen this film before so I'm looking forward to watching it and giving my honest reaction today.
Also while I'm doing the video today I'm going to be drinking a delicious cup of coffee that was sent to me by six
beans roasters.
They sent me a pack of what they call their superior theology blend.
Which I loved and I'm very thankful for that.
I'm going to be doing an unboxing as part of this video at the end.
We also want to mention that coming up.
I'm working on a video called if denominations ordered coffee.
So if you've got ideas for how denominations might order coffee.
Leave your ideas in the comments below and it may end up in a future video.
So without further delay Let's get on to watching a thief in the night.
Okay, somebody mentioned on Twitter about the ticking clock.
Sucks you right in like immediately, you know, something's happened.
Apparently the rapture has already happened as at this point in the film.
Why is this not played in every church every Sunday?
This is awesome.
Okay, dude in the mustache is just really really really throwing me off this that guy's
dangerous.
I mean I He is on a wanted poster somewhere, but Satan isn't very happy about you deciding to give your
life to Christ.
Okay, I realize he's the good guy but he gives me just as much creeps as the dude with the mustache.
I'm not gonna lie and it's just me or does he look like Danny Noonan from Caddyshack to insist that the Bible
is.
Anything more than the poetic expression of those greater principles by which man lives with man.
Okay, so this preacher obviously represents the Methodist.
I mean the Just kidding represents the progressive.
This guy is representing the man who doesn't believe the Bible.
Are you kidding me?
No, no, that's the worst part of the movie.
With the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ Preacher looks like the dad from Teen Wolf.
I mean, I'm good.
I don't lie.
I don't cheat.
I'm as good as the next person.
Ray Comfort has entered the chat.
If I'm gone you'll be gone, too.
That's some serious rapture talk.
If I'm gone, you'll be gone, too.
That's that's that's rapture confidence.
I like it.
I Love preacher man.
Love the Jorts.
That's him.
That's Jorts.
Oh, oh, I know what's coming.
Listen to this music To get you worked up.
And she said she told her she said if I'm gone, you're gonna be gone, too.
I didn't hear a trumpet.
Oh.
Large jets reportedly have crashed one at takeoff killing an estimated 56 persons.
See that is why every jet should have an unbelieving co -pilot that way you can make it to the
ground safely.
The United Nations Imperium of total emergency.
United Stations United Nations Imperium of total emergency unite.
That as soon as the emergency is passed We will return to self -rule for all nation.
This is exactly what happened in Star Wars.
Give all the power to the chancellor during an emergency and he's never gonna give it up.
You're gonna end up with the Empire.
Who do not bear the mark of unite are subject to arrest and prolonged inconvenience?
Prolonged inconvenience.
That's the most ominous threat I've ever heard.
Prolonged inconvenience.
Oh my goodness is Edith it's Edith from Archie Bunker.
Whoa Reverend Turner got got for a one -hour movie.
This seems it feels incredibly long.
She looks like a young Jodie Foster.
I Got a bad feeling about this.
Something bad's about to happen.
I got a bad feeling.
We've got her safe in our arms.
I Knew mustache was a bad, dude.
Is this one of those.
It was all over the globe confirming it as true.
All right.
I've seen the movie now.
Here's my review.
First of all, I want to say James White now.
We can be friends again.
I've seen a thief in the night.
I have to say I have a lot of thoughts about this movie right away.
Completely 70s.
Love it.
I was a big fan of the a -team.
I was a big fan of the Dukes of Hazzard.
Had a ton of that kind of vibe in it a lot of old movies filmed with this same style.
Of course, it was filmed on a shoestring budget.
The cuts in the film are awful.
The dialogue the acting is terrible, but I'm okay with that.
I think that's that that's kind of what that that's that's part of the endearing factor but
from a theological perspective.
Obviously, I'm not a dispensationalist.
I don't believe in a pre -tribulation rapture a lot of the dish a lot of the Dispensationalism in this movie I disagree with
but it's it's basically the same narrative That we saw in the left -behind
movies that were later definitely something that Christians probably should
watch just to say you've seen it because this is part of Christian pop culture history.
And now that I've seen it I can say that I've seen it and it wasn't Wasn't
great.
So a lot of people who saw this movie said that it scared them and I can see that I can.
Especially if you saw this movie back when the the clothing and the
the obvious time.
This is a time capsule movie.
It's captured in the 70s.
If you saw this movie in a time when that stuff wasn't weird.
You still probably would have said it wasn't you still probably would have said it wasn't a great movie
from a theatrical perspective.
But those things wouldn't have thrown you off the way the hair.
The dress and all that would have thrown you off so I could see this being totally scary.
I tell you what, I wouldn't show this to my kids now.
I think this would take my five eight And ten -year -olds.
I think this would this would give them nightmares.
Because of the way it's presented almost like a horror movie even though the gospel is.
Even though the biblical message is is is is pushed throughout.
It's it's it's more pushed like a fearful thing a scary thing.
So, yeah I could see how this would have scared a generation of Christians who were Forced to watch it at youth groups and things like that for sure.
Are there any positives in the movie?
Let me say this I do think that people should be prepared for the return of Christ.
Even though I don't believe that this movie accurately represents what I believe is going to happen.
I am a what's called an amillennialist.
I don't believe in a pre -tribulation rapture.
I believe when Christ returns that's going to be the end.
I don't believe there's going to be something that happens after he returns.
I believe that's going to introduce the eternal state.
I know there's some of you who disagree.
That's fine.
I think eschatology is one of those areas that we can certainly disagree and still be brothers and sisters in Christ.
But in that regard from a theological perspective, I disagree with that.
But one thing I don't disagree with is that we should be ready.
We should be ready for the return of Christ.
We should be the Bible tells us we should be prepared.
He is going to come and he is going to return now.
I know, you know whether you're a post -millennialist, amillennialist, that might that might Play into the factor of when you think he's going to return and
what things are going to precede his coming.
But at the same time You know, we we shouldn't treat the the return of Christ
like it's a fearful thing for believers.
But it is a fearful thing for unbelievers.
It is something that unbelievers should fear because when Christ returns, that's the endgame.
That's it.
There is no more Second chances.
So there is some positive in that review in that regard of the film the positive of
People being prepared for Christ to return.
But the thing is even if Christ doesn't return in your lifetime You're gonna die one day.
You need to be prepared to face the Lord.
You need to be prepared to meet Jesus because you could die today.
Even if the world that I always tell this when I talk about eschatology, I say eschatology begins First with
individual eschatology.
We are all going to die and within a hundred years everybody who's watching this video right now within a hundred
years.
You're all going to be dead.
And so we all need to be prepared you all need to understand and evaluate where you are spiritually and
Understand whether or not you have received Christ as your Savior because that matters.
Whether you're a dispensational premillennialist, whether you're a non -millennialist, whether you're a post -millennialist, we're all gonna die.
We're all gonna face the Lord whether he returns in our lifetime we're all gonna face him and
And we better be ready.
So in that sense, you know, there is some positive I just think that the movie takes it in a I think
a movie takes a Interesting theological idea and really runs with it.
So that's my thoughts.
That's my review of the movie and If you've never seen it, you can watch it for free.
It's all over the internet even on YouTube for free.
It's called a thief in the night 1972 again, I want to thank six beans roasters for providing me a nice
