DAY 189: 2 Kings 15; 2 Chronicles 26

Welcome to 5-Minute Bible, your daily guide for your daily reading. Today's July the 8th and we'll be looking at 2 Kings 15 and 2 Chronicles 26. Now yesterday we stepped into the book of Jonah because 2 Kings 14 introduced him during the reign of Jeroboam II.

And Jonah showed us that God's mercy reaches even to Israel's enemies and that the Lord rules far beyond Israel's borders. Now today we return to the book of Kings and the shadow of Assyria begins to grow darker.

Uzziah's Rise, Pride, and Leprosy

After their apparent repentance, their nation is under God's blessing. They grow strong which means that they become an increasing threat to the immoral Israelites. Now today in 2 Kings 15 and 2 Chronicles 26 we see that Judah rises under Uzziah who's also called Azariah while the northern kingdom begins shaking through assassinations, instability, sin, and foreign pressure.

And this matters because the prophets that we are about to read, especially Isaiah and Amos, speak directly into this world of strength and pride and injustice, religious corruption, and coming judgment.

And in that way Uzziah becomes king of Judah at just 16 years old and he reigns for 52 years. And he does what's right in the sight of the Lord and as long as he seeks the Lord God prospers him. Now at first Uzziah's reign is marked by remarkable strength.

He defeats his enemies, he builds cities, fortifies Jerusalem, develops agriculture, strengthens the army, and becomes quite famous in the region. 2 Chronicles says that his fame spreads far and wide because he is marvelously helped until he is strong.

But then comes the tragic turn. When Uzziah becomes strong, his heart becomes proud. It's the same thing that we saw in others. He enters the temple to burn incense, seizing a priestly role that does not belong to him.

That's something that only the priest could do. And the priest courageously opposed him but Uzziah becomes angry. And when the censer is still in his hand, leprosy breaks out on his forehead showing that God is not pleased with him.

And he spends the rest of his life cut off from the house of the Lord while his son Jotham governs in his place. Now meanwhile, 2 Kings 15 shows the northern kingdom unraveling. After the reign of Jeroboam II, Zechariah is assassinated.

Shalom reigns for one month and is killed by Menahem. And then Pechahiah is later assassinated by Pekah. And then during Pekah's reign, Assyria begins taking Israelite territory little by little until eventually it's all over for them.

So while Judah looks strong under Uzziah, Israel is collapsing internally. And Assyria is beginning to press from the outside in a way that will soon end the northern kingdom completely. Now as you read today, I want you to ask the following question.

What happens when strength produces pride instead of gratitude? These chapters show us that blessings are dangerous when it makes a man forget the God who gave them. And the central tension in all of this is strength without humility.

Uzziah isn't weak, incompetent, or foolish in obvious ways. On the contrary, he's gifted, successful, strategic, and effective. He builds, he wins, he organizes, he strengthens the nation, and yet precisely there is where the danger begins.

2 Chronicles gives us the key phrase, he was marvelously helped until he was strong. And that phrase is both beautiful and terrifying because God helped him become strong. And once he was strong, Uzziah began acting as though his own strength were the reason for it.

And this is where the personal application becomes very sharp and convicting because sometimes we think failure is the greatest test of faith. But it's success that's even more dangerous. Failure can drive a man to prayer, but success often makes him imagine that his successes came from his own abilities and dependencies.

In the same way, Uzziah's sin is not merely that he entered into the wrong room of the temple, but he tried to take an office that God had not given him. He confused royal power with priestly authority, and he assumed that because God had blessed him in every other sphere, that he would also bless him here as well.

Now meanwhile, Israel's instability shows the same truth, again repeated from another angle. When a kingdom abandons the Lord, power becomes a prize to seize rather than a stewardship to receive. Assassination replaces covenant order.

Thrones are not received in humility but grabbed through bloodshed and war. And at the same time, Assyria's arrival reminds us that the world is changing. The empire connected to Nineveh, the city that Jonah did not want to see spared but who repented and received God's mercy, is now beginning to loom largely over the twelve tribes of Israel.

The mercy of God to the nations does not mean that covenant rebellion in Israel will be ignored. In fact, God spares the Assyrians to become his weapon to use against his unfaithful northern tribes. So whether through Uzziah's pride in Judah or Israel's bloodshed in the north or Assyria's growing pressure from beyond the borders, the message is abundantly clear.

Strength severed from submission to Yahweh will result in judgment. And in that way, Uzziah points us ultimately to the need for a better king, Jesus Christ. The true king who never once abused his authority and never ended in pride.

Uzziah is a king who tries to seize priestly privilege but is struck with uncleanness. Well, Christ is both king and priest by divine appointment. He doesn't grasp at a role forbidden to him. He receives his office from the Father and he fulfills it perfectly.

Uzziah enters the temple in pride and is driven out as unclean. Well, Christ enters the heavenly sanctuary in humility through his own blood, not by becoming unclean but by cleansing his people forever.

At the same time, Uzziah's fall prepares us for the book of Isaiah because Isaiah's great vision comes in the year King Uzziah died. The earthly king who became proud is leprous and passing away. But Isaiah will see the true king seated on the throne high and lifted up, holy, holy, holy.

And that's where the section is heading. Kings are rising and falling. Thrones are shaking. Assyria is growing. Israel is collapsing. Judah is becoming proud. But the Lord remains steadfast and faithful and enthroned even in the midst of all of these things.

And in the soon future coming of Christ, the holy king will cleanse his unclean people not with an altar of coal and ash alone, but with his own atoning blood. He is the king who cannot be corrupted by strength.

He is the priest who truly makes a pure atonement, and he's the holy one who will make his people perfectly clean forever. So as you read 2 Kings 15 today and 2 Chronicles 26, I want you to notice how strength and become pride when gratitude dies.

Tomorrow we will enter Isaiah's prophecy at the very end of Uzziah's reign. Isaiah is going to speak during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, having a very long and profitable prophetic ministry.

And he will be interpreting the very age and showing that Judah's deepest problem is not their political weakness, but their covenant rebellion against the holy one of Israel. But with that, read your Bible carefully, devotionally, and joyfully, and may the Lord use his word to sanctify you completely, and we will continue our journey tomorrow.
