DAY 196: 2 Chronicles 28; 2 Kings 16–17

Ahaz becomes one of the darkest kings in David’s line, filling Judah with idolatry, sacrificing his own sons, and copying a pagan altar from Damascus for use in Jerusalem. Under pressure from surrounding enemies, he refuses to seek the Lord and instead trusts Assyria, compromising Judah’s worship in the hope of securing political safety. Meanwhile, the northern kingdom reaches its end. Samaria falls, Israel is carried into exile, and 2 Kings 17 explains why: the people rejected God’s covenant, ignored His prophets, embraced idols, imitated the nations, and refused to repent. The lesson is severe. When God’s people become like the nations, they are eventually handed over to the nations. Even after Assyria resettles Samaria, the new inhabitants fear the Lord while serving their own gods, creating a counterfeit religion of divided loyalty. Yet Christ stands in complete contrast. He is the faithful Son of David who rejects every worldly shortcut, obeys the Father unto death, destroys idols rather than accommodating them, and brings His exiled people home. Where Ahaz corrupts worship and Israel forfeits the land, Jesus creates true worshipers, covers the shame of captives, and restores what sin has scattered.
