Biblical Foundations for Serving the Lord

Let's look to a few portions of scriptures. 1 Timothy chapter 4 verses 15 and 16. 1 Timothy chapter 4 verses 15 and 16. Take pains with these things, be absorbed in them, so that your progress may be evident to all.

Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching. Persevere in these things, for as you do this, you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you. 2 Timothy chapter 2 verses 21.

2 Timothy chapter 2 verses 21. Therefore if a man cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. 3 Philippians chapter 3 verses 10 -12.

3 Philippians chapter 3 verses 10 -12. That I may know him in the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death. In order that I may attain to the out resurrection from the dead.

Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 1 Corinthians chapter 2 verses 1 -5.

1 Corinthians chapter 2 verses 1 -1. And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom proclaiming to you the testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

And I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. The message in my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power. That your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

2 Corinthians chapter 4 verses 7. 2 Corinthians chapter 4 verses 7. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves. Lastly Ephesians chapter 4.

Ephesians chapter 4 verses 15 and 16. Ephesians chapter 4 verses 15 and 16. Speaking the truth in love were to grow up in all things to him who is the head, even Christ. Out from whom the whole body being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each one part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

Lord we truly thank you and praise you. Because as we gather in your name, there you are in the midst of us. We thank you and praise you for you are a speaking God. We have read your word. Now we ask you through the Holy Spirit to usher your word into the depths of our hearts.

Because your word is spirit and is life. Leading us into the true services. So that you may gain the glory. So that your will may be accomplished. We look to you in one heart. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Knowing the Master Before Serving

Concerning the matter of service. As we mentioned. Service is a matter altogether according to our knowledge of God. It is also according to us being his disciples. If we do not know the master. It is altogether impossible to serve God.

Unless we stand on the ground of disciples. Our service will never reach God. So brothers and sisters. For us to fellowship the matter of service. We must firstly see the Lord. If we see the master. Service is a natural result.

If we have not seen the master. We can serve there. It is not an activity of religion. If we truly are the Lord's disciples. Spontaneously services issues out of our being. There is no need for us to ask how do we serve.

We do not need to ask if there is opportunity to serve. If we know the Lord. If we stand on the ground of being disciples. Services manifest from us naturally. So I truly feel. If our brothers and sisters.

If we do not know the matter of consecration. If we are not absolute in the matter of consecration. Sometimes we feel we already know the Lord. Certainly I offer something. But the consecration we talk about.

It is nothing more than doing a little thing. We have not truly seen the meaning of consecration. If we have not become a true consecrated person. And for us to enter rushing into service. This is the difficulty in the church today.

Consecration as a Living Sacrifice

So dear brothers and sisters. We must see. The mercy of the Lord has given us. To be able to offer our body as a living sacrifice. Every brother and sister. Should offer our body. As a living sacrifice.

Living sacrifice is nothing more than putting ourselves in the hand of God. Acknowledging that He is our Lord. He is knowing ourselves Savior. He is our Master. We have come to know Him as our Savior for our benefit.

If we truly know Him as our Master. It is for Him to gain us. We must fully consecrate ourselves to the Lord. Not merely consecrating parts of us. Therefore the scripture says offering your body, consecrate your body as a living sacrifice.

Not merely to offer your lips. Or your hand. Or your feet. But to consecrate your whole being to the Lord. That is to say to come out of yourself. To lay yourself wholly on the altar. So that the Master can gain His sovereignty in you.

That He may fill up you. That He can be manifested out of you. And this is how we begin our service. Today we will continue. We will see the process for continuation of service. As we offer our body to living sacrifice.

This is only the commencement of service. This is not to say once we have offered ourselves we have become a useful vessel. Our consecration to the Lord is merely a beginning. Then the Lord begins to work in us.

To rid us of all that is not of Him. To add more of Himself into us. Then you will see an offering and in service you will continue to grow. Service is not to service a matter. Service is to serve our Master.

Serving the Lord in Every Area of Life

For this cause. For this cause. Service is timeless. Service is without a venue. Service has no regard to things. Our entire life is a service. Much of the time we treat service as to do something. Or at a certain venue we do a certain thing.

Or we will have service if we are put into a certain environment. Or there are certain days for us to serve. Or the other days are for us to do other things. For instance, if you truly have seen what is service.

You have to see what you serve is for the Lord Himself. Then you will see service is for life. Your entire life is for service to God. For you to live is for the Master. For you to live is a service. Regardless in your home.

Or in any kind of relationship. Regardless whether you work in society. Or whether you serve in the church. All these are included in service. All these are mere external things of service. These are only methods of service.

The one whom you serve is the Master Himself. So as you are at home, you are there to serve the Lord. When you have your quiet time, you are there to serve the Master. When you are engaged in activities, you are there to serve the Master as well.

When your parents are nursing your children, you are serving the Lord. When your children are obeying your children, your parents, you are serving the Lord. As husband, you are there to serve the Master.

As wife, you are also serving your Master. As in-laws, you are there to serve the Lord. As daughter-in-laws, you have to serve the Lord as well. We have to see service is for life. It is not me. It is Christ living out of me.

So brothers and sisters, even as we work in society, we see God's children often have a misconception. They say, you people are the preachers. So you are there to serve the Master. We are working in society.

We labor from morning till dusk. We are serving mammon. Only you people can serve the Master. I remember a while back, as we fell as if there was a brother, who said, I have wasted much time in these years, because I work in a hospital.

I have not served the Master. I told the brother, I said, brother, you are wrong. As you work in a hospital, you are there to serve the Master. Maybe you are even serving better as you work in a hospital than those who preach on the pulpit.

Sometimes we who preach on the pulpit will serve ourselves. Perhaps our hearts are not pure before the Lord. But even if you are working outside, your heart is there to serve the Lord. Your heart is for service to God.

You need to allow the Lord to issue out of your being. For instance, this is service. So we need to have a great turn in our context. For every redeemed one, from the moment we are saved, we begin the life of service.

Consecration Is Not a Call to Religious Activity

From the day of consecration, we begin our service. Scores of years ago, as I was saved, we had such a habit in a one of a revival. On the last day, they will always preach consecration. And consecration means you will come out to become a sinner.

Aside from that, there is no need to consecrate. So as the preacher was preaching consecration, he was calling people to come out to become good preachers. For instance, and I was saved there. My heart was consumed.

I felt the Lord loves me. He saved even such a one as me. Of course I am a sinner. I felt I need to rise up to be a preacher. My heart was right. And my Lord was pleased with my heart. But what I did was foolish.

Because at that time, they told me, now you can choose the place where you want to go to. You don't need to ask about the Lord's will. You circle on. So you make the choice. So they placed a big map of China.

Where do you want to go? Come up and tell me. Just point the finger at the map. That's where you will go. I was a youngster. Fifteen years of age. I had a heroic idea. I would go to the remotest part, the most difficult part to serve the Lord.

To show that I love Him. So I ran to the public. And I put my hand on my forehead. Because at that time, to the Chinese that was the remotest part of the world. Friends and sisters. Is this service? Thank the Lord.

During these years, I believe we have changed our concept regarding consecration. Therefore brethren, not therefore apostles, therefore brethren, we are all brethren. I beseech you by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies a living sacrifice, not to do something, but to become an offering, in other words, not for activity, but to die.

This is our sacrifice. Lay ourselves in the hands of God. Daily we live for Christ. None of us should live for ourselves. Whatever we do, we do it through Him. We do it for Him. Brothers and sisters, I feel we must be thoroughly clear about this matter.

Service is timeless. And has no regard for place. And has no regard for different things. There is no such thing as clergy service. We must see those who serve. Everything is service. To him who is not a servant, nothing to him is a service.

Even for him to preach is not a service. Even for him to go to Mongolia and preach, that is not a service. Only one who is fully consecrated, whatever his hand touches, that becomes a service. Dear brothers and sisters, we must serve to such an extent.

Otherwise, our service is not wanting. Our concept to a service is incomplete. So brothers and sisters, you are a redeemed one. Have you fully consecrated yourself to the Lord? If so, you must remember you are one who serves the Lord.

Even when you touch mammon, you are still there serving the master. You are not there to serve mammon. Even as you are cleaning your house, inwardly you have a realization you are serving the master. When you are a servant, the scripture says for you to serve your master, it is like unto serving the Lord.

It is not to do well in the eyes of man, because you are serving in the eyes of God. Dear brothers and sisters, this is what is called service. In the Old Testament, God delivered the children out of Egypt into the foothills of Mount Sinai.

There, God told them the purpose was for him to deliver them. God said, if you hearken unto me, if you obey my command, you will become a kingdom of priests. Dear brothers and sisters, what is a kingdom of priests?

We know in the Old Testament time, the priests are those who serve the Lord. If they were born in the tribe of Levi, if they become the household of Aaron, they are born to serve. When they are growing up, they are receiving training.

Their training is how to serve in the temple. The whole being is for service. And all we know, the original intention for God to save them is that their whole kingdom will be a kingdom of priests. Not just the tribe of Levi.

Not just the household of Aaron. God's desire for saving them is that every Israelite will become a priest. If you are an Israelite saved out of Egypt, regardless of whether you are a man or a woman, regardless of whether you are old or young, everyone is a priest.

Your identity is a priest. Your living place is to serve God. There is no such thing. His whole life is to serve God. This is God's heart's desire for us. But because the Israelites worshipped the golden calf, they disobeyed God's command.

And they disqualified themselves for service. It is not that God didn't call them. It is that they made themselves unworthy to serve God. Because our God is a holy God. Therefore God was forced to choose one out of twelve tribes.

And within this tribe to choose one household. To use them to serve instead of others. We know this is God's temporary measure. God was forced to use this method. But it wasn't God's original intention.

This is one of degradation. Thank and praise God. As we come to the New Testament, our Lord has brought us all the way back to our original intention. All those who are past, many things were incomplete.

Many things were stopgap measures. They do not represent God's eternal purpose. But we thank and praise God. The salvation from what Jesus has done on the cross is so perfect. He saved us all the way to the beginning.

He saved us all the way back to the eternal purpose of God. So the Bible tells us, 1 Peter chapter 2, tells us that we are all prisoners. We are all prisoners. We are all living things. We need to build up a spiritual house.

And become a kingdom of peace. To offer up spiritual sacrifices pleading to God. So every brother and sister, we have a position of being priests. If you don't want to be a priest, then don't worry about being saved.

Once you're saved, you will have a position of priesthood. From that moment on, the day that you live is for serving God. Aside from that, there's no other purpose. The priests in those times were serving in the temple.

Even though some priests were sent out to teach, but they were all interrelated with the temple. Whenever a priest is severed from the temple, that's where we see the devil. Do you remember in chapter 17, there was a Jew in the land of Judah.

He lived in Bethlehem. But he left Bethlehem. Looking for a place to dwell. He was formerly a Levite. Though he lived in Bethlehem, he should have served the Lord in the temple in Jerusalem. But you see, this man was wandering, looking for places to live.

In other words, he was looking for a job, looking for a service. But he was not serving the Lord in the temple in Jerusalem. He was looking for a service elsewhere. Looking for a job. Just consider, a Levite looking for a job.

He already had a job. He didn't do what he was supposed to do. He was looking for something else to do. And he went into the mountains of Israel. And met a man named Micah. And there was an idol in his house.

Micah asked him, where do you go? He said, I was searching for a place to dwell. And he said, good. I've got an idol in my house. I just lack a seat right here. Since you are a Levite, come to my house and become a priest.

I'll pay your salary. You can dwell with me. So the Levite settled down. And he became a priest of a house. And not a priest to the whole Israelite. He became a household priest. And the tribal councils, the tribal dads, they were also looking for a place to dwell.

And the spies went through that place. They saw the Levite. They asked him, what are you doing here? He said, I'm a household priest for this family. And in chapter 12, the tribal dad was moving on to another place to dwell.

And they captured the idol of the household priest. And they forced the Levite to go along with them. They said, is it better for you to be a household priest or a tribal Levite? After consideration, of course, it's better to be a tribal priest.

You have graduated. So with joy he went along. What did the Bible say? The Bible said, however long the temple was lost, it was in Shiloh. And the idol shall remain as lost. Who is that Levite? The Bible tells us he's the grandson of Moses.

Moses' son, Gershom. And he was the son of Gershom. So you see, if a priest is separated from the temple, he becomes an idol. They are worshipping idols. The burnt fishes. Our service to them is connected with God's temple.

Serving Together in the Household of God

Where is God's house today? The Bible tells us. God's house is God's temple. We are the house of the living God. And we are of the household of God. And we are serving within the household of God. In the Old Testament, there was a difference between the Levites and the Levitical service and the priestly service.

The Levites served in the outer court. The priests served in the holy place. The Levites were serving the temple. The priests were serving God. The Levites were serving men, the Israelites. As they were offering sacrifices.

And they helped them. What about the priests? They served God. So there were differences. We thank and praise God. Today, we who belong to the Lord were both Levites and priests in us. On the one hand, we serve God.

On the other hand, we serve the temple. On the one hand, we enter into the presence of God. On the other hand, we enter into the midst of the presence of God. On the one hand, we pray. We endear the Lord.

And we burn insects. And we stand before God. Christ becomes our sacrifice and we offer it up to God. We come near God. This is us being priests. We worship Him. We praise Him. On the other hand, we are there to serve our brothers and sisters.

We are there to help them. We are there to take care of mundane chores. To burn fishers. Everyone who belongs to the Lord. We not only daily serve, we serve every man as well. Remember, in Revelation chapter 4, in the midst of the throne and around it, there were four living priests.

Day and night, they cried out. Holy, holy, holy. The God who was, who is, who is to come. They were continuously worshipping day and night. Dear brothers and sisters, our service is the same today. Because the four living priests, they stand before the Lord.

They represent God's original intention of creation. We want us to worship Him day and night. Serving Him continuously day and night. And also everyone is there to serve. It is not merely one living priest who is there to serve.

It is four living priests who are there to serve. It is all four living priests worshipping. Every one of us is there to serve. The older ones are there to serve. The younger ones are there to serve. The newly saved, you begin to serve.

When you are saved for scores of years, you are still there to serve. Our entire life is for the purpose of serving our Lord. Then brothers and sisters, as we command our service, are we already a vessel fit for the Lord?

Training Disciples for Effective Service

We see that the Lord calls His disciples. Our brother mentioned the Lord was calling Peter and Andrew. Come follow me. I will make you fishers of men. And they forsook all to follow the Lord. They became the Lord's disciples.

And they were with the Lord. Then brothers and sisters, did it start from the day they were called? They were already a vessel fit for the Lord. Straight away they went out as fishers of men. We know for Peter to gain men as fish was not until the day of Pentecost.

Three thousand fishes. But Peter wasn't a vessel fit for the Lord the day he was served. We see in the matter of service we need to continuously be trained. We begin to have a little service. At that time most of our service is out of ourselves.

Maybe just a little bit for the Lord. Most of the time we serve according to our concept. But we can't say there's nothing from the Lord. But as the Lord trains us on the one hand we serve. On the other hand we learn.

And the Lord is always teaching. And we saw how the Lord was more severe toward Peter because Peter was a loose person. If Peter would shut up a little more then he would receive a little less rebuke.

But because of his looseness he received more rebuke. But he also received more grace. So you see how the Lord continuously training Peter. They grew up with the Lord. They saw how he lived. They followed our Lord.

As the Master was working they were observing. Sometimes the Master would ask them to help him a little. As the Lord distributed the fish to the Lord and they asked the disciples to distribute their load.

So they learned this way. They didn't understand the Lord's heart. Most of the time they went against the Lord's heart. For instance the Lord says I will go to Jerusalem. I will be killed. I will resurrect on the third day.

Peter sees and says Lord never. If you go to the cross where will we go? I'm not willing to go to the cross here. So don't go to the cross. Just as you see. We need to learn a lot. We don't need a genius to serve.

We need to learn to serve well. So where should we serve? Where should we learn? Disciples We need to take note of the four steps we need to learn in the process of serving. First Step one. We need to learn to know our Lord better.

Knowing Christ as the Content of Service

If we do not know the Master there is no way we can serve the Master. We can only serve ourselves. Because serving to the Lord is not merely a thing. You can do a thing well but the Lord hasn't gained your service at all.

Because what is service? Service is to live out Christ. Service is to defend Christ. If your knowledge of the Lord is very little inwardly likewise your service is also very little. For instance, you know the Lord to be your saviour.

All you can do to help others is to bring others to the saviour. But aside from the fact you brought him to the saviour you cannot help him any longer. So you see in Christianity today in the traditional Christianity they praise the gospel, people get saved.

What do they do afterwards? You go and help others. Aside from that there is nothing more. The gospel has to serve is to live out Christ. It is to defend Christ, Lord. It is not to defend doctrine. It is to defend Christ.

If Christ in you is a small person all you can live out is Christ. If your knowledge of the Lord is small even though you can preach it becomes a mere doctrine. It will not become a way for the other people to trace their way to Christ, to grow.

So brothers and sisters to serve the Lord we must seek to know him well. One who doesn't serve he is one who is self-satisfied he feels he is already saved he feels he is already saved he is not going to hell he is going to heaven so he is satisfied he feels he knows the Lord well he doesn't know him anymore maybe he has a feeling the more you know him the more trouble you get the less you know him the more freer you get.

So one who doesn't serve doesn't seek the Lord and he is self-sufficient and Christian if you begin to serve. If you begin to serve you will feel Lord, I truly don't know him enough because I do not know him.

I do not afford him a position in me so all that I can live out is nothing but myself. Man cannot detect Christ out of me. There is no way for me to dispense Christ to him. You feel very weak and you are found wanting in the matter of Christ and this constrains you to seek after him.

I remember when I first came out to serve the Lord I was twenty years of age. My knowledge of the Lord was poor. Of course I knew my Lord could be my savior. I knew a little bit of the Bible so at that time I was serving in Shanghai but the knee was very tight but he was sick a lot.

So every Lord's Day either he preached or I preached. And he was quite severe in his training of me. He never told me what I was to preach. At 7 .30 a .m. or so he sent a note two words only it says you preach.

The other one I taught. He taught means he preached. You preach means you preach. I was in fear and trembling because I never knew what I was to preach. So every moment I was to be ready as I look back I feel quite shameful.

Many brothers and sisters who sat among the audience knew me much much more. When they heard me preaching they were suffering. They really embraced me with their love. But aside from that do you know during that year I felt there was nothing to do aside from the Lord's Day.

Sometimes I would preach. I had nothing else to do. There were two hundred some odd things. There were lots of needs but I couldn't supply them. The lives of me were soundless. I couldn't solve any problems.

I couldn't help brothers and sisters. I became an unemployed had nothing to do. Many times I ignored. Brothers and sisters if you have a heart to come to service you better go back to your job and prepare yourself at the same time.

Until such a time the Lord's commission to you will increase. You must lay aside your occupation to fully devote yourself to the Lord's work. Otherwise you will be damaged because you have nothing to do.

Even you do our activities it is merely activities and having no spiritual value. For brothers and sisters we must know the Lord. We must persevere in seeking to know Him. When Paul was writing the Philippians he was in his old age he still said I only have this one desire.

I want to know the Lord. I want to know His power and His resurrection. I want to laugh at His death. Dear brothers and sisters if you do not have a heart of seeking to know the Lord perhaps you are not a worthy person.

If you are truly serving the Lord the more you serve the more you feel you are not worthy. The more you seek to know the Lord the more you will seek to know Him. The Lord is unfathomable. There is no limit to knowing Him.

It is not like you work to such an extent you already fully know Him. There is nothing more to know. Dear brothers and sisters how much has the Lord gained and thrown in you. How much of Christ have you retired.

Paul said for me to live is Christ. He was living. He was manifesting Christ not her. Dear brothers and sisters those who truly know the Lord when you go before Him perhaps He did not say a word but you are already touched by Christ because He has fully flown Christ out of you.

Sometimes you have a lot of questions. When you go before a person who truly knows the Lord perhaps your questions have been answered. Perhaps your questions have been answered. Why? Because it is not a matter of reasoning but Christ has become your answer.

So dear brothers and sisters if we are still there helping. Dear brothers and sisters with words with hands when you are helping like this is it not. Dear brothers and sisters what He has done is Christ.

His love for Christ has been experienced again. This is the truth. What we have done is Christ. What we have given to others is also Christ. For us to dispel is Christ. So we must be desperately seeking after Christ.

Dear brothers and sisters our heart of seeking the Lord is not enough. Much of the time we seek after scriptural knowledge but we are not seeking the Lord Himself. We need to know our Master. If we really know the Master.

Dear brothers and sisters the Lord will automatically manifest out of you. So Paul had a desire whether in life or in death that Christ will be manifest out of Paul's life. He did not care for himself he could even die or he lived.

As long as Christ will be manifested this is a real service. Second in our learning of service we need to know ourselves. Dear brothers and sisters we seriously know ourselves. The Bible tells us our heart is more exceedingly wicked exceedingly wicked even to the point of deceiving ourselves.

Only the Lord can discern our hearts. So we see here we seriously know ourselves. Formerly we were fully confident of ourselves thinking we are capable. So we do everything by ourselves. Formerly we did not think we can compare with others so we were inferior.

So we withdrew ourselves. Today we believe in the Lord. We become one of the household of God. When we come to the man of truth those who formerly were confident they were self-taught they rush themselves to the forefront.

They touch everything they give opinions to everything and they control everything. If you do not listen to them they will do it. And other people according to the natural man they will withdraw. When they come to service they withdrew themselves.

Then I do not qualify. Let other people do it. Dear brothers and sisters you see those who serve and those who do not serve they are not servants because those who serve they serve themselves. Those who do not serve they do not serve.

They do not serve man they still serve themselves to preserve themselves. When we come to the house of God we see we bring all our natural being to the church. Then we think that if we are active here then we are servants.

If we are busy then we are servants. If we are not busy then we are not servants. We are unemployed. But dear brothers and sisters this is because we do not know ourselves. When we are serving thank and praise God.

Then the Holy Spirit will start to speak to us. He gradually shows us where we live today is ourselves. In the past I lived for sin. Now I live for God. How formally I used my intuition to sin. Now I must turn around and use my ability to serve God.

You see the source remains the same. Even though the things change the source remains the same for many Christians. They say now I believe in the Lord. I should not sin anymore. I must obey God's command.

So they make a resolution. Now I live by faith. He uses His natural power to live by faith. He uses His natural will to resist sin. He uses His natural strength to obey God's command to be a good Christian.

Brothers and sisters as you do it this way shortly after you are tired to become such a good Christian do not sin. You obey all of God's command. You try to please God. You conjure up all your might to serve.

The more you do the more difficult it becomes. The more you do the weaker you get. So I often say I say a Christian who is wishy-washy he is a Christian but he does not manifest pride. This Christian dwells in safety.

But if you truly want to be a good Christian the more you try the more you become a nervous breakdown. You become nervous. He is a good Christian. But they have taken the wrong path. You have not seen the freedom in you to live out the life of Christ.

Because you do not know yourself enough. So you are going to fail. You are going to fail tremendously. This is what St. Roman VIII said to me. He said I am really a coward because I am a slow sinner. I am willing to do what I cannot do.

I do not want to do what I cannot do. I insist on doing. I discovered one thing that is within me that is in my flesh. There is no good thing. Brothers and sisters this is knowing oneself. We do not know ourselves.

We think that there is good in us not bad. Sure the life that we inherited from Adam. There is much sin much failure. We do not want those. But after we believe the Lord let us use what we get from Adam the good part to thank God.

What is wrong with that. Brothers and sisters you must be all who is natural. Not only can they not know God's will neither can they obey God's command within ourselves that is in our flesh. Plus no good thing to this cause.

When the Lord was crucified the Lord brought us all with Him and crucified. The Lord said I have been crucified with Christ. Now it is no longer I that lives but Christ lives in me. And the one that lives in the flesh I live in the belief of Christ by the faith of Christ.
