Romans 8 - Study in Prayer — Hattie Hammond

Until it's possible for him to come and I prayed much about this and the Lord said he'd be with me. So the whole party got on the plane. You know there's seven in my party and only have to buy one ticket.

But we all got on the same seat and came along and here we are and we're all seven enjoying this beautiful house you furnished for me. It's beautiful it really is. I look I think there's seven plants in the living room only and it's really really beautiful and I'm just having a lovely time over there.

Somebody said sister Hannah are you over in that big house all alone. What do you think. I said that's right. No no never. Seven of us moved in and we're just having a delightful delightful time over there and I believe the Lord is going to give us just a beautiful time together here.

Don't you. Yes I believe he is. I'm not much of a housekeeper and a miserable cook. So if you want to help me out then I'll be glad when you prepare some of your special oven dishes especially. Yes. Well um there are announcements that I do want to make after I thanked the church for that beautiful bouquet on my dining room table from the church.

What a lovely welcome. What a lovely welcome you've given me. I appreciate it so much. Um wonder how many of you remember before I left here. Uh I said in the next time I come back I would like to have just like a prayer conference just a week of prayer together.

You remember that. Yes. Yes some of the the board told me we had a lovely board meeting last night just getting everything arranged and this is what I feel the Lord would have us do in this week. This week we're going to have a week of meeting and I feel it should be just a week of prayer now.

A Week of Prayer and Spiritual Instruction

When I say that I don't mean I don't mean just coming together and praying. But uh but like a real prayer conference. I conduct prayer conferences over the country and and I just just with this church.

Of course in these prayer conferences usually a couple churches are united and it's like a seminar for that area. But I feel the Lord wants us to have the same thing for this church and I believe he wants to really meet us really meet us in this.

How many of you think God wants to answer prayer. He loves to he loves to. Do you know how much God loves you. This is this is his body. It's for this group. Jesus went to Calvary. It's for us. He bled and died and anyone who would lay down their life for you.

The word says if God spared not his only begotten son. Can't you believe that with him. He wants to give us all the things really to enjoy. So he is not standing off somewhere and just wanting us to pamper him and beg him and coax him and beg him and finally greedily out of reluctancy he does something for us.

No he's not that kind of a God. But but he loves to answer prayer. So we're going to we're going to really get into the meaning of prayer. I a week of prayer. But I pray it will be a week of praying too.

I think it will be. The Lord's going to help us. He's going to help us. Now everybody be present tonight at six o 'clock. What time does the meeting begin. Honey you know what we're going to start at six o 'clock.

Yes. I like to begin to be on time. Don't you. Yes. I can't stand this dragging out poking along. No we're going to start every single meeting on time. What time do the meetings start. During the week.

That's right. So we're going to start the meeting at seven o 'clock and they all said amen. Yes. I think you will approve of that. No tonight. Tonight's going to be beautiful. I don't always know in the morning what he wants me to talk about at night.

But I know now what he wants me to talk about tonight. So be present. And then during the week we want to include everybody. We want the whole church to be involved. So Tuesday night I'm going to have special message and special prayer special consideration for the board members.

You ever pray for the board. Well we're going to specially pray for them Tuesday night and that special board meeting night. Please don't don't say I'm going to stay away tonight. That's for the board.

It isn't that way at all. It is for everybody. But we want the board to be in the holy ghost. Don't we. Hey you sure do we want the board to to help us. And I'm depending on them. It's it's. I don't like to work without a pastor.

So I told the board last night I'm depending on every one of them. So you'll find out what that's all about Tuesday night and then Wednesday night I want all the Sunday school teachers here the superintendent the teachers.

And they tell me Wednesday night is royal rangers missionette night. Bring the royal rangers missionettes along. Now they're not going have their special meetings that's canceled. But don't you love to see family come into the house of God and sit together.

That's the way I grew up. I always had to go into the church and sit with my parents. And they saw to it that I didn't wiggle too much. But that's where the children ought to be with their parents. I think children ought to be present when the holy ghost comes.

I think children should know this heritage that we have in Pentecost. I think children should be there to know what Pentecost is all about. And and the things I remember in those meetings when the holy ghost.

I'd have missed that if I'd have been off in the corner somewhere. So all the staff and the superintendent and all the Sunday school teachers. And you'll find out Wednesday night what that's all about all right.

Thursday night everybody listening. Will you see to it that all the elderly are here Thursday night. I think the elderly should be included. Don't you. You know sometimes they'd like to be prayed for and they'd like to be remembered.

The elderly and the sick. Do you know anybody that's lonely. Raise your hands. You know anybody that's lonely. Bring them that bring them bring. Do you know anybody out there that's hurting. How many out there's hurting what it would mean to them if somebody would slip their arm around them and say I love you.

And I would like to pray for you. I have seen tears just flow down. Nobody ever told me that before you bring them all on Thursday night. Will you. Hey all right. And then Friday night will be a special night for the young people.

Prayer as a Subject Worth Studying

And you'll find out what that's all about there. There are. There's so much in prayer in the realm of prayer that we need to know about. Don't you wish you knew really knew how to pray. We're gonna we're just gonna talk about prayer teaching teaching on this subject of prayer.

Why prayer is not answered. Fasting in prayer. That interests you warfare in prayer. We need to know we're living in the time that Daniel knew about Daniel. We're in the time of Daniel's prophecies. And you remember the story where Daniel prayed and and Michael tried to get his prayer through to him.

Get the answer through. And Daniel was having such a hard time praying through. But when Michael came he said Daniel your prayer was heard the first time you prayed. But the principalities and powers have fought me and have stood against me.

And it's taken me 21 days to get the answer through to you. Now mind you. That's 21 days getting through from God's side to Daniel. So don't wonder if it takes Michael 21 days to fight his way through principalities and powers.

Don't wonder if it takes us a little while to pray through. Yes. So we need in these days to know real warfare in prayer. Because we wrestle not against flesh and blood finishes but principalities and powers.

And we had better know something about prayer in this day. So the Lord's going to help us. We're really going to have a study on prayer and and believe God to help us. And I believe there's going to be some prayers answered this week and some real victories and deliverances through the sacred blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen. Good to see all of you. Good to see you brother Graham. Did you see. Yes. Good to see us now. Would you stand. And we're going to pray. God's blessing on his word. Father you brought us together this morning.

You're here. We just love your presence. You're moving in and out these pews. You're moving up and down these aisles. Because your body is here. The redeemed of the Lord is here. Those with whom the Holy Spirit is dealing and calling are here.

Everyone present is precious to you. And you have a special interest in everyone here. And we just love you for this. And as we open thy sacred holy word I pray thou will speak to us minister to our hearts with give us living bread in Jesus sacred holy name.

We pray and for his glory. And everybody said say it again say it again. Now sing it hallelujah. Realize the importance of prayer. Don't you wish we could understand it from God's side and see the importance of prayer as God sees it.

If we did I'm sure every one of us would pray more than we do. You know. And when we see the need to know the need that's in the body today the needs in our family. What about the needs in our own individual lives.

The wonder to me is that we ever get off our knees when we know God really does hear. And God really does answer prayer. He really does. You know in the word of God. You know Jesus says more about prayer than any other single subject.

He spent more time letting us in on the the secrets of prayer telling us what to do when we pray and how to pray. And and he gives us examples of prayer. And he even allowed the disciples to listen in when he prayed so they could pass on to us what he said what he said.

I often felt I would like to be present. I'll get that out of there in a minute. That's because I you know I haven't been preaching for a couple days. I'd like to know what Jesus said. But in the 17th chapter of John we can read what he said because he he just let the disciples listen in.

But you know we must study prayer. We study doctrine. We love to study the bible. There are students right here. There are students of all kinds of subjects. And how we love the study of prophecy. And we love to study music.

And we're so glad when anybody is interested in the study of music. Today everywhere I go I'm meeting folks who are interested in foods. Studying foods. And how many do you know. You're a doll. Lisa. Thank you Lisa.

Aren't you. Lisa. That's right. Thank you Lisa. Praise the lord. We study all these different subjects. But really there isn't any subject as necessary as prayer. So let's really study prayer. Prayer.

Learning to Pray Through Practice

We prayer of all the arts that we know is a spiritual art and don't. I wish all of us were genius. We're just genius in this art of prayer. We study prayer. But prayer has to be practiced. There are there are a lot of things in the spiritual life that I wouldn't recommend practice.

But I do. We have to do. You agree with that. We sure do. We practice something that has to be learned and and we learn from the ABC of prayer. I suppose many of us many of us I look at these lovely young people and children.

I don't know thank god for every child who has a Christian parent and is taught to pray at its mother's knee. First prayer I prayed. And you adults I suppose first prayer you prayed was now I lay me down to sleep.

Well a prayer begins there and it grows and grows and matures and matures on to adoration before the throne of god. Yes. And this and this will continue. You know I want us to know the things in god which are of eternal things that we carry on with us in the spirit into the next life.

These are the things that are really worthwhile. And and prayer and our contact with god. Prayer and praise and adoration and worship. We want this to become the very wolf and wolf of our spiritual life and being.

And this will carry on with us into the eternal ages. We must learn to pray. Learn to pray. We learn to pray the praying by praying. We learn to pray. But pray. I could. I we could. What. In the libraries.

You go to the libraries and look at the books. Or go into the bookstore and look at the books on prayer. Just books and books and books and books on all kinds of prayers. You could read every one of them and not know how to pray.

Listen. Honey. You can hear 10 000 sermons on prayer and not know how to pray if we don't put it into practice and learn to pray by praying. I could hear my brother play that piano. I could sit over there and listen to him play for a year.

And that wouldn't teach me how to play. But but talk to him about the hours that he has a c-d-e-f-g c-d-e-f-g practice until he learns the art of praying. And then he can go on to a-b-c d-e-f-g and and put that all together in the chords and the tones and the melody and the beauty in the art of music.

Hesitate. Oh you say I don't know how to pray. I don't know how to pray. Never hesitate praying. Some of the we might say shortest prayers you can call them the poorest prayers. The crudest prayers that every one of us have prayed.

Every one of us to pray if it was sincere the touch of God was in it doesn't matter how how slow we are in learning. Keep on praying. Keep on praying. I'm so glad the church that I grew up in the pastor just calls on.

He'd call on everybody to pray. And he'd especially call on somebody if he thought they were out of victory. He didn't look for that one that was on top and came in. He said there's Joe he's down this morning and he's having a hard time.

He's in a battle. And so he'd say brother Joe will you lead us in prayer. And I was in more than one service when that person in a trial and the person down the person having a hard time when they prayed themselves through when the pastor called on them to lead in prayer.

And maybe they would knuckle it out. May I say God God. And break down in the middle. But can't you see the Holy Ghost in that. See the Holy Ghost in that. Who who wants beautiful prayers. Anyhow when somebody I've heard some of these martyrs why they.

They try to flatter God while they're praying just try to flatter God. They flatter the people they're praying for. And they flatter themselves. And sit down. And one sat down didn't know he was sitting down beside my father my dad.

Very seldom did they visit me in my meetings. But this time they did. And this fellow sat down beside my dad and he said was pretty good. Wasn't it. No it isn't. It isn't what's beautiful to the human.

But we want that that is anointed by the Spirit. Yes. And if we break down in the middle of it somebody has said every real prayer has a touch of Pentecost in it. Well they meant has a touch of the precious Holy Ghost.

So and what he says what he says what he what he says what he does. It is so beautiful. Okay now there's a reason why I haven't read my text yet. Because the text that I'm using this morning to me is one of the most beautiful passages scriptures on this subject of prayer.

The Spirit's Help in Prayer: Romans 8

You'll find it in the eighth chapter of Romans. In the eighth chapter of Romans this is so beautiful. Romans 8. I'll begin with 14. As many as are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear.

But you have received the spirit of adoption whereby we can see our Father or whereby we can pray. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. And we have a right to pray.

If children then heirs of God. I'm so glad that doesn't say we're heirs of the things of God like mansions and crowns and so on. But we're heirs of God heirs of his nature heirs of his riches heirs of his power heirs of his glory.

We're in the family system children to enjoy everything you enjoy. Don't you. You don't want your children to go hungry. You say this is your house this is your home. Honey. If you want a glass of milk all you have to do is to say mommy may I have a glass of milk.

Anybody here ever been refused. You ask your mother for a glass of milk. Anybody here ever refused. Then what makes you think our Father would say go away hungry when we come to him and pray. We're in the family.

We're part of the family. We're in the household of God children of God heirs of God. Everything that's in God's house belongs to us. His riches belong to us all of his power belongs to us all of his glory.

We should shout real loud real good loud. Today when you say father you should stand up straight and father. And we're right in the school. What can I do for you. The very fact that we father we're honoring him and we come with submission to him and then make our request known.

And because we're in the family he says you have a right to say say hallelujah heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. It shall be that we suffer with him that we may be glorified together. For I reckon the sufferings of this present times are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed enough for the earnest expectation of the creature for the manifestation of the sons of God 21.

Because the creature itself shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. Now I see bibles and pencils everywhere underscore that the glorious liberty of the children of God underscore that because I'm coming back to that.

And that should make us jump up and down all right now in the next couple of verses there are three grooms. Three grooms in the spirit three travails. And this it is the travail of the precious holy spirit.

For we know the whole creation grown and travails in pain together until now and not only they but ourselves also which have the first fruits of the spirit. We ourselves grown within ourselves waiting for the adoption to which the redemption of our body.

Then in the 26th verse the spirit help us our infirmities. We know not what we should pray for as we ought. But the spirit itself makes us intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered. And he that searches the heart knows what is the mind of the spirit because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Creation's Groaning and the Coming Renewal

Oh hallelujah hallelujah. Yes now the first groom is the groom of all creation. I ever since Adam's fall all creations we know has been thrown into a bundle. And this is this is why creation is growing.

And do you know we're getting very near the close of that groan of creation. It's about to be answered about the answers. All the earthquakes and the floods and the hurricanes. All the poor east coast you know it's a deliverance to be awaiting there right now.

Hurricane after hurricane and floods and and storms and winds. I called my how was it. And she came on the phone right away. And she says sister Hammond it's snowing here and they had almost a foot of snow just outside of Washington in October.

We never had winter back there until the middle of January. But we're living in a different day now in a groan of creation. The groan of creation. What's it. Groaning about to bring forth a new heaven and a new earth.

A new earth. Mother earth is in travail. And it isn't going to be long till a new earth will be brought forth. But when Adam fell and threw all creation into bondage God pronounced a judgment a curse on the ground.

Don't ever say man is cursed man. Well he says part of the curse. Man is under curse. No honey. God never cursed man. Man is under judgment. The judgment of God is on man. But it's the ground that is cursed.

And all creation out there is under that bondage and that curse. And that isn't. And it's it's man's fault. It is our fault. We are the ones who sinned against God and it's our fault. And this is why everything in creation wants to get back at man.

That's why the wind go puff and puff and blow your house down just to get even with you. Uh-huh. That's right. That's why the floods want to wreck and destroy what man owns just to get back at man. But there's a voice in all that that is crying out to man.

That they're saying why don't you get right with God. Why don't you get back to God. It's your fault. I'm suffering. It's your fault that the brooks are all the brooks sing in a minor key. Did you know that.

And because they do they they say why. It's man's fault. It's your fault. Man is away from his God. Man is away from his king when you get back under the king. When you get back to God. When you get right with God now.

That's the meaning of this verse that says the earnest expectation of creation. In the 19th verse waited for the manifestation of the sons of God. Every once in a while there's a group that'll rise up and say we are the manifested sons of God.

All kinds of false doctrines and false religions. We're the manifested sons of God. Well when the when the sons of God are manifest creation will stop its groaning. But the sons of God will not be manifest until they come with Jesus.

And they'll be manifested in the air with him. That's when the true sons of God will be manifest but not before then. So don't believe those deceptive spirits and false doctrines all creation is waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God for us to get right with God.

That's why even a little old mosquito will come and he'll just bite you real good give you yellow fever and give you malaria and whatever else he can do to you. And he's talking to us he's speaking to us and he's saying get right with God get back to God.

And I won't bite you anymore. Because he won't in the millennium. You know a little child can play over the surface then. And the lamb and the lion will lie down together and the wolf and the calf will eat in the field together.

And that sting of judgment that's upon him will be taken out of them. Because the sons of God are manifest. They came with Jesus and the millennium is on. The millennium is on. But now creation is groaning groaning.

That's why it's just getting a draft and the draft just blows through and says I'll give you pneumonia if you don't repent. Get right with God. As soon as I stand here as soon as I stand here and and you get killed it's okay.

I'll send fever too. Get right with God get back to God come under his feet. And that's why you remember how many of you know Saint Francis ever hear about Saint Francis. Well he could go out and tame those wild animals.

He could call to them and they would answer him and they would do what he said. And there was one was a tiger was a tiger or a leopard in Italy that was some children had been killed and he had that whole village was just terrorized because he would steal in his knife and steal the children had killed a couple and he was really acting up.

And so they sent for Saint Francis to come. And Saint Francis came and he waited until after God. And the tiger came and he saw him and he said you'd be a good tiger. And don't you think you'll hurt anybody anymore.

And you've gone back where you came from and stop terrorizing this. You just leave it alone. The tiger turned around went away. He said you believe that. Yes. Yes. Because that's the Lord is creation groomed until we all come into that kind of relationship with God.

So creation is groaning. Everything is against you out there. Everything is against us. What. It's talking to us. It's groaning at us all right now. Listen to this. We ourselves also groan it says we groan.

We groan because we're not heaven yet. We are saved and we are partakers of this wonderful spirit of God. And we have his light within us. And and we are so happy with his life and his light and his beauty and his power.

And and we love this. But we grow within ourselves in in sympathy with creation. You know why. Because we are still in bondage too. What is our bondage? Our bondage is that our bodies are not yet redeemed.

The Redemption of the Body

Our spirits are redeemed. But our bodies are not yet redeemed. How many of you would like to zip this thing down and get out of it huh. Haven't I wished if I could just zip this thing down and your spirit be released and your spirit free.

Because there's no bondage in our spirit. Our spirit is in life. Our spirit is in life. Our spirit knows God. Our spirit can go right into the throne room. And how many of you know you can go to meeting.

And oh wasn't it wonderful. Oh yes. Oh. I shouted I laughed. I spoke in tongues. I worked. Oh I had such a wonderful time in the meeting last night. And you woke up the next morning as sick as a cat. You know what that's like.

And you said how can this be. Honey. That's the groan. That's the groan that and the bondage that we are still in because we're still in this body. Now see this is what it says. We we create. The creature itself also shall be delivered from the body of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

The creations of we grow which have the first fruits of the spirit. We ourselves grow within ourselves waiting for the adoption. To wit what. Yes honey thank you. The redemption of our body. That's what our growth.

We grow for the redemption of our body. Our body. Don't we wish we knew this. What we don't know about divine healing there. There are secrets in there about divine healing. We pray for the sick. We pray for ourselves.

We pray for this old body. We know Jesus made an atonement on that cross for the body as well as for the soul and the spirit. We can believe for the spirit. But now listen. Our spirit is redeemed. And if we died in the next five minutes how many go to heaven.

Come on. Put up your hand. We died in the next five minutes. It's not a wonderful hope. Honey. It surely is. It. Surely is. Yes we. But. But we're growing. We're maturing. We're coming on to perfection in our spirit.

Aren't we. We wouldn't all go home absolutely matured and and and full grown we go home. Where we are there is there in our bodies. Jesus made an atonement for our bodies. But we have now listen to me.

We just like daily we overcome in in the spiritual realm. Daily we we reckon ourselves dead to sin and alive to God daily. Dear daily we must partake of eternal life for our body. There's a daily partaking of divine health and divine life and divine strength.

Now here I believe it's the inner secret of divine healing. It's just like we grow spiritually. We must partake daily of divine health. Amen. Divine health is better than divine healing. Don't you think to be kept for the power of God.

Yes. So we grow waiting for the redemption of our all right now. And this verse up here that says creation is under the bondage of corruption. It wants to be brought into the same glorious liberty of the children of God.

In that 21st verse creation there's an understanding that we don't know anything about. But uh we have liberty. We have release in the spirit. And all suffering animals and the trees won't die and the flowers won't fade.

And the feathers of the birds won't fall anymore. They long. This says for that same liberty and relief known to the children of God. And they're going to have that too. They'll. They're going to have that all right now.

The Holy Spirit's Intercession

Now the the last thought here is the groan of the holy spirit. The groan of the holy spirit. Likewise the spirit help us our infirmities which means what weaknesses. Infirmities. The weaknesses our weak spots the weak places in us.

Every one of us have a weak spot. Every one of us have a weak place within us that we need help in. You know where you're most likely to fail the lord. Right. You know where you can be tempted the easiest.

The spirit help us our weaknesses. We know not what we should pray for us. We ought. We don't know how to pray. But the spirit maketh intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered. Listen dear now if the holy spirit sees that our need is so deep that he can't even put into words but he groans for us and prays for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

If the holy ghost can't utter it how can we. How can we. How can we. But isn't it marvelous that he's praying for us. And it says here that he searches the heart to know what is the mind of the spirit.

Because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of god. The spirit groaning in his praying for us. This is marvelous. This is marvelous. What is the spirit groaning for. Well when we're when we're praying.

When we're praying and the spirit begins to grow. It says god. God doesn't listen to our fancy prayers. So just take comfort whether you pray fancy things that doesn't make a difference to god. He's not listening to our fancy prayers.

Listen what it says. But during our praying in he says that's all right. Just say all those words and pray on. Just pray on. Pray on. But while we're praying he's listening to what the spirit is saying.

Did you ever feel that you had prayed for an hour before you really said what you really wanted to say. Simply because you didn't know how to pray. I have i've prayed and cried and bawled. And oh god this no god that god you know.

And oh god it's like this. Oh god. And finally there was a burst from down inside maybe just one sentence. God. That's what i wanted to say. That's it. That's it. And i knew the holy ghost had made it.

Yes he has made it. And that's the part of the prayer that's going to be answered. That's the part of the answer. The mind of the spirit. God searches to see what is the mind of the spirit. But oh honey this is so wonderful.

When we are praying for the body pray on. Pray all day long. Pray by the hour. Pray yards and yards and yards and yards. Pray but pray. Pray. But but god will search out that prayer. What is the holy ghost praying for this church.

What he prays. That's the prayer that will be answered. When you're praying for your family say everything you want to say. Say everything you think needs to be said. Pray for molly and judy and betty and jim and howl and howard and bob and all the rest of them.

But that's what the prayer that'll be answered. What the holy ghost says about your family. We pray for you in marysville and this whole area we pray. But god knows who the holy ghost is dealing with right now.

He knows who's under conviction. He knows who he's calling. He knows he knows who's ripe and ready and open for him right now. And that's the holy ghost is praying for them. That's the prayer that will be answered.

Thank god for this wonderful holy ghost. Thank god for this wonderful holy ghost. And how important it is to be in the holy ghost to yield to him and let him pray. Let him if he wants to grow let him go.

We had a brother in the east a saint of god one of the saints of this outpouring of the holy ghost. He was one of the saintliest of man. And that man would groan in spirit until you could hear him all over this church.

Yielding to the Spirit in Prayer

But i want to tell you something happened. Let the holy ghost manifest himself through you any way that he wants to. If he wants to weep let him weep. If he wants to laugh let him laugh. Let him sometimes it's rejoicing time.

Let him rejoice. Let him rejoice. Let him rejoice. If he wants to groan let him groan. We talked about three groans. Well you say did jesus ever have any. Did jesus ever groan. Yes he did. Want me want me show it to you.

Turn to 11th chapter john. And i'll show you where where jesus groaned. And he got answers to to his prayer. So don't don't be afraid when you have some of these strange manifestations of the spirit and the holy ghost leads you in prayer.

And you say well i've prayed like this all my life. But but now i'm doing this kind of thing. You just let the holy ghost do whatever he wants to do all right. It's the 11th chapter of saint john. And it's the story of what a story of last look at that 33rd verse.

You know when mary was come where jesus was and saw him she fell down at his feet saying to him lord if thou had been here my brother had not died. When jesus therefore saw her weeping and the jews weeping which came with her read it.

He groaned in the spirit and was right now come down to 38th verse. Some of them could not. This man which opened the eyes of the man should not have died. Jesus therefore again groaning. Tell what your bible says groaning in himself comes to the grave.
