Senator Diaz. On the bill. Senator Diaz on the bill.
00:31
Thank you Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, members of the
00:38
New York State Senate. Today we have come to a day that none of us maybe would like to to be part of.
00:55
This is a day where we decide a very serious and a very important issue for the whole state of New York.
01:15
Same -sex marriage, they are sponsors, they are supporters, and their community has spent a lot of money, a lot of time, a lot of effort to come to this day.
01:39
Last year they raised a lot of money from mostly of every single state in the nation to contribute to members of the
01:56
Democratic Party to take away the
02:05
Republican Party strong position against gay marriage and to be sure that the
02:17
Democratic Party come to power. So in order to get to this day, as I said before, they raised a lot of money.
02:31
And that was commitment made. I could talk to you about two commitments made by the leader of this chamber,
02:42
Michael Smith. Those commitments made to the followers or supporters of same -sex marriage, and those commitments made to me.
02:59
Those commitments, I believe none of them was kept.
03:06
And to play with people's emotions and to not comply with what you promised is wrong.
03:16
It is wrong. It's not leadership. It's treason.
03:26
So today is a very serious day. So let me talk to you about the irony of the whole situation.
03:38
The Republican Party, when they were in control, the members of the Senate, Republican, when they were in control for 42 years, they never allowed this to happen.
03:51
Now that they lost the majority and became minority, everyone is depending on them to make this happen.
04:03
Yes, ladies and gentlemen of the state of New York, listen carefully to what I'm saying.
04:09
For this legislation to pass, it is the Republican Party, the one that a lot of money was spent to get them out of power, to produce a vote, the necessary vote for this to pass.
04:25
So people are asking the other side of the aisle, we took you out.
04:37
We spent money against you. Now we need you. Help us. Don't get confused.
04:46
This is a democratic agenda pushed by a democratic governor, a democratic
04:52
Senate President Michael Smith, Senate President John Sampson.
05:00
And this democratic agenda needs Republican support to pass.
05:13
The reality is that it has been the
05:18
Republican Party and their family values.
05:25
It has been the Republican Party with their moral values. It has been the
05:30
Republican Party with their family values that for years and years has been kept these values in the whole nation alive.
05:50
But now they are being asked to throw away the values, to throw away whatever they have been doing in the whole nation and the whole world to keep family values, moral values, traditional values, and to produce the necessary vote for this to pass.
06:14
Same -sex marriage between a man and a man and a marriage between a woman and a woman is not only opposed by us evangelicals.
06:26
There are many out there that think and believe that it's only us evangelicals that want to oppose same -sex marriage.
06:35
All the major religions in the world also oppose it. The Jewish religion opposes it.
06:44
The Muslim religion opposes it. The Catholic religion opposes it.
06:52
As a matter of fact, just a few days ago, the Catholic Bishop of New York released what they called the
06:57
Manhattan Manifesto, which they are expressing their opposition to same -sex marriage.
07:05
And not only the evangelical, not only the
07:11
Jewish, not only the Muslim, not only the Catholic, but also the people of the nation oppose it.
07:21
In 31 states of the nation, Madam President and ladies and gentlemen, 31 states of the nation, the majority of the states in the nation, that the people have gotten the opportunity to vote for this issue that the people have rejected it.
07:41
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, just nearly,
08:10
Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
08:40
The majority of the people in the nation has opposed by their will same -sex marriage.
08:49
Only five states out of the 50 allow same -sex marriage.
08:58
This is because they have legislation that allows same -sex marriage.
09:08
In order for those five states to get this done has to be through some politicians or some judges.
09:22
The people never, in any state, people have rejected it.
09:29
People have opposed it. But let's find some politicians. Let's put some politicians in power.
09:36
So those politicians or governors, so they could put some judges, so then we do it through that.
09:44
But if we take it to the people, the people don't oppose that.
09:50
So let's do like Mayor Bloomberg did. Let's go against the will of the people by doing through politicians and do away with the people's will.
10:05
And that is wrong. And that is wrong. Let's the people decide.
