This CHANGED My View of Tongues!

Tongues as Known Languages Versus Gibberish

And if you've never prayed in tongues, if you follow my instructions, the anointing is here to do the rest. I can't do it for you, but I can tell you how to pray in supernatural languages. So you start speaking like little baby words and say them as fast as you humanly can.

Raise your hands to the Holy God and begin to pray in a language you've never been instructed. If you don't move your tongue and speak, no one else will do it. I know you don't know what to say. Make little nonsense syllables up there, not nonsense.

But if the first word's coming out of your spirit, do it faster. I said faster. I said faster. You can do it faster than that. If I had a gun in your ribs, you'd do it faster.

You can do it faster than that. If I had a gun in your ribs, you could do it faster. Can't you just see the Apostle Paul saying something like this? Do it faster, faster. If I had a dagger in your side, you could do it faster than that.

Does that even remotely look like what we just saw illustrated? Does that even remotely look like what we see in the book of Acts? Absolutely not.

This is pagan. This is the flesh.

You know, and Sid Roth, he's not even any good at it.

Apparently, these supposed pastors who flaunt their supposed gifts of tongues publicly in their churches have not read 1 Corinthians where Paul writes, If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret.

But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. And if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say amen to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?

It takes a lot of pride and self-centeredness to completely ignore what Paul teaches about how the gift of tongues should look in the church. And not only that, to do the complete opposite of what Paul teaches.

Paul is concerned about outsiders being confused by what people in the church are saying. But these pastors do not care. They would rather pretend to be special and anointed to impress their audience rather than be faithful to what God has clearly revealed in Scripture.

Now, to give you a little illustration of how this would have looked in the early church, let's kind of transport ourselves back about 2 ,000 years almost and let's say we're at Grace Community Church in Jerusalem, okay?

To kind of illustrate what this would have looked like. Now, there's not only a gift of tongues or languages, there's also a gift of interpretation of languages. And the way this would have looked to illustrate Barney.

Barney, okay, I just met Barney. Barney, the way this would have looked, Barney would stand up. If the Holy Spirit gave Barney the gift of languages, all of a sudden Barney would be able to speak and say, I'm going out on a limb here and say that you don't know Swahili.

Okay. So Barney would start speaking fluent Swahili, even though that's a language he doesn't know. Now let's say I had the gift of interpretation of tongues, then immediately I could translate what Barney said in Swahili even though I don't know Swahili either.

And then Barney would sit down. And then Kevin would stand up. And Kevin, all of a sudden the Holy Spirit gave Kevin the gift of tongues and let's say Kevin started speaking in fluent Farsi. You don't know Farsi.

Okay, so he's speaking in Farsi, fluently, even though that he does not know that language. And then I, if I had the gift of interpretation of tongues, I could translate what Kevin said in Farsi even though I don't know Farsi either.

Okay, and then Kevin would sit down.

And that's how it would have looked. Now let's compare Paul's teachings on what the public display of tongues should look like in the church to the kinds of supposed speaking in tongues we see in churches today.

Does it look like these churches and pastors care about obeying Scripture at all? Clearly, they do not.

Is that what we see today in the modern charismatic movement? Not even close.

Not even remotely. Not remotely. So obviously, what we saw from these supposed pastors speaking in tongues publicly is completely unbiblical. They do it not out of obedience to Scripture, but rather because they want to appear especially spiritual to the audience.

So the audience will be amazed and therefore give money to their ministries in hopes of receiving some of their special anointing for themselves. Also, in Scripture, the gift of tongues was always known languages that could be understood by a particular group of people.

Tongues were known languages. We've made this point repeatedly. Tongues were not unintelligible gibberish.

Again, in contrast, let's listen to the kinds of things these pastors are saying. Clearly, the supposed tongues these supposed pastors are speaking are not known languages, but rather complete gibberish.

Sid Roth even admits this when he supposedly teaches the audience how to speak in a supernatural language by making nonsensical baby sounds.

So you start speaking like little baby words and say them as fast as you humanly can.

Of course, if someone can be taught how to speak in a supernatural language, then it's obviously not a supernatural language. The most popular argument in defense of the Bible teaching that tongues can be nonsensical gibberish is the use of 1 Corinthians chapter 13 verses 1 and 2, which says, If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

And if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. People who use this passage argue that the Bible does in fact teach that there exists a tongues of angels that could very well be what sounds like nonsensical gibberish to us.

However, this interpretation of this passage is extremely problematic.

And very wrong. And then Paul goes on to use hyperbole. In fact, here in verse 1, when he speaks of the tongues of angels, that in and of itself is hyperbolic. He's using hyperbole. He's exaggerating to make a point.

And it becomes very clear when we look at the next couple of verses. Paul goes on to say,. If I have the gift of prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge. Did Paul know all mysteries? No. Did he have all knowledge?

No. You see, he's using hyperbole. He's exaggerating to make a point. He continues,. And if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains. Had Paul ever literally moved a mountain? Had he ever rearranged the topography of Israel?

Of course not. Obviously not. He says,. But do not have love. I am nothing. And Paul says,. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor. Had Paul done this? No. And if I surrender my body to be burned.

Had Paul ever surrendered his body to be burned? Obviously not. He was still very much alive writing this letter. But do not have love. It profits me nothing. You see, he is exaggerating to make a point.

He is rebuking the Corinthians. He was exaggerating to make a point.

It should be completely obvious to Christians that the ridiculous gibberish that is dressed up as tongues in churches today is extremely unbiblical. We know this not only because they are speaking gibberish and not known languages, but also because their theology is absolutely terrible.

And it makes no sense for God to give special anointing to preachers who aren't even faithfully teaching Scripture and the gospel. They don't even know what it is.

It's so obviously not what it was in the Scripture. What it was in the Scripture was known languages. Known languages that could be translated miraculously. They would speak a language they didn't know, and then somebody would give a translation of that language they didn't know.

That was clearly what was going on in the book of Acts, and that's what subsequently follows up. So the burden of proof is not on us to try to figure out what this is. They don't even know what it is.

They can turn it on and turn it off. They can learn the words that they say. It's a kind of gibberish that has developed its own lingo. So, yeah, it's so obviously not the biblical gift. And because it's a supernatural gift in the Bible, I go back to the same question.

If God was going to give that supernatural gift to anyone, He wouldn't give it to people with bad theology because He'd be validating their bad theology.

Although there is much disagreement today concerning whether the gift of tongues still exists today, or if it was a special sign gift to authenticate the message of Jesus and the apostles, it should be clear that at the very least, the vast, vast, vast majority of what is supposedly speaking in tongues today is not biblical and is not actually speaking in tongues.

The Gift of Tongues in the New Testament Church

Theologically, I will not say, even though men godlier than I would disagree with me, theologically or doctrinally, I do not say that tongues have ceased. All right? So everybody thinks, oh man, he believes in tongues.

No, hold it. I just don't think that's the issue. When I go to the text, I cannot, you know, I see the arguments and stuff, but I can't say that I can say in my conscience that these things have ceased.

But here's what I do do. I look at what tongues are in the scriptures, and I don't see them anywhere today. What I see in the scriptures as being tongues, and I compare that to people who say they speak in tongues, I see something completely different.

So see, some people are cessationists. That means they believe tongues have ceased. I kind of call myself a practical cessationist in the sense that I do not say those things have ceased. I've seen God heal people.

You know, but have I seen a man who had the gift of healing? No. Have I? Here's what I think. I believe tongues in the book of Acts. Every time it occurs, it is a real phonetic language. It is. It's a real phonetic language.

And those are the only examples of tongues we have, and they're real phonetic languages. And when they occurred, everybody knew something supernatural was going on. I mean, if I just sit here and repeat over and over, I think she wrote a Honda.

I think she wrote a Honda. There's nothing supernatural about that. But if a man walks in from Uzbekistan and I begin to talk to him the gospel in his dialect, everybody's going to know something's going on.

I believe that they were always, and I don't see that today. In light of all this,.

Why Christians Seek Experiences Instead of Scripture Alone

I think we can say with confidence that what these pastors are doing is giving people what they want to hear, not what they actually need. People want something more than just scripture, than just the gospel, because scripture and the gospel by themselves are too boring, not exciting enough.

But what people need most of all is to believe what God has revealed, that the completed canon of scripture is now completely sufficient for Christians to live lives that are completely pleasing to God.

A major reason why Christians are so eager and desperate to hear from God directly is because they don't feel that scripture alone is enough. They need something more exciting, something more powerful,.

Something more compelling. And there are a lot of you out there today who either have struggled with this or you struggle with it right now. And you've got friends who use all this God told me language and this high and mighty form of spirituality where they walk around and don't have to make decisions or pray about anything because their life is just a series of God going that way, that way, that way, that way.

And you sit there and go, what's wrong with me? What do I have to do to get there? What's sad is not just the fact that that person's not telling the truth and that you're desiring something that even if it does exist is pagan and demonic and not Christian.

But what's worse is you have been bought with a price, precious blood of Christ. You have been taken from darkness to light, from death to life. You have been utterly transformed and are being conformed to the image of the son of the living God.

And yet, you're not satisfied. You may have even come to question whether or not you're really saved because your experience doesn't look like those people. It's bondage and it's pagan and it's the spirit of the age and it's to be rejected.
