A Great Awakening Film Review | George Whitefield, Benjamin Franklin & the Great Awakening

In this episode from the Christian Heritage Center, Kyle Kearbey is joined by Kurt Smith to review and discuss A Great Awakening, the new historical film centered on George Whitefield, Benjamin Franklin, and the First Great Awakening.

We discuss the film’s portrayal of Whitefield and Franklin, the remarkable friendship between these two very different men, the historical setting of the Great Awakening, and the film’s treatment of revival, preaching, conversion, and spiritual liberty. We also consider where the film succeeds historically and theologically, where viewers should exercise some caution, and what Christians today can learn from this extraordinary period of church history.

Was A Great Awakening historically accurate? How well did it portray George Whitefield? What should we make of Benjamin Franklin’s relationship with Whitefield? And what does the Great Awakening teach us about genuine revival?

Join us as we consider the history, theology, and legacy behind A Great Awakening.
