Remembering September 11 Through Psalm 44

Thank you, Becky. Let me start out here with Psalm 44. Oh God, we have heard with our ears. Our fathers have told us what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old. You with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted.

You afflicted the peoples, but them you set free. For not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm and the light of your face, for you delighted in them.

You are my King, oh God, ordain salvation for Jacob. Through you, we push down our foes. Through your name, we tread down those who rise up against us. For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me, but you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us.

In God, we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah. This was a Psalm that I was meditating on today, being the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack on our nation on September 11th, 2001.

I'll tie this Psalm back into that here in just a moment, but just to kind of preface the show a little bit, Becky is not along with me. Physically, she can't be with me because we are 1 ,600 miles apart.

I am in Dawsonville, Georgia right now for the White Harvest Conference that's going to be on Saturday in Marble Hill at Foothills Community Church. Becky is, of course, still with our kids back in Casa Grande, Arizona.

If you get closer to saying it the right way, but we say it the whitest way possible. Casa Grande, Arizona is where she is, where it's a little bit hotter. Here, it's not as warm. It's humid, of course, being Georgia, being the South, and it rained a lot more today.

Though, just a moment ago, Becky texted me and said there was a storm blowing into Casa Grande as well. So anyway, I guess one way or the other, I would have rain. But she's not with me on the show. She sends you her love, however, and you can send us your questions.

I have one email and one voicemail that I'm going to get to here today. But first, let's reflect a little bit upon the significance of this day. It's now been a quarter of a century since the attack on our nation when Muslim terrorists boarded planes, flew them into the Twin Towers, the World Trade Center in New York City, another plane flown into the Pentagon, another plane that was taken back by the passengers and crashed in Pennsylvania.

But all of the people aboard these planes, these four planes, died on this day. That plane that was crashed in Pennsylvania, that was Flight 93, the passengers that took the plane back from those terrorists, considered heroes.

They're being remembered this day. In addition to those who died in the plane crashes, of course, there were those who died when the plane hit the Pentagon and when those planes hit the Twin Towers, nearly 3 ,000 people.

And I believe that number includes the passengers aboard those planes who also died when they were crashed into the towers. It also includes the first responders who ran into the buildings to save people from the fires.

But there were many people that had no chance because they were above the fire on the higher floors and were not able to get down through the fire to safety. We remember the images. We remember the images of people jumping from the buildings.

We remember the images of people covered with the dust and soot once the buildings collapsed. We remember the images of those buildings falling. The videos of planes being flown into those buildings. You know, it's hard to think about it now, but YouTube did not exist then.

We can watch a lot of that on YouTube now. You were probably on social media today and watching some of that footage and remembering what you were doing when you heard the news. I saw an interesting video today that was a collection of morning news stories from that morning in New York City.

So all the different television stations that are there in New York City and the things that they were reporting on, it was almost like news as usual. And there was even a clip of a guy who said, kind of a slow day today, nothing's really happening.

All right before, probably minutes before the planes were flown into the Twin Towers. To everybody else, it was just a day like normal. But now it's a day that will live in infamy. And we have YouTube that we can go back to and watch all of this.

Didn't exist though when 9 -11 had occurred. People did not have cameras on their phones like they have today, 25 years later. Amazing how much farther our technology has come even since then. But because people weren't just walking around with a camera in their pocket, is also why there's hardly any video evidence of the first plane crashing into the first tower.

Now there's one video that is the one that you most often see of the first crash. And it was because there was a guy who was filming firemen who were doing something on a road. They were just doing normal work on a road.

And he's got the camera just watching them. And you hear the plane in the background and the firemen are looking up because this is a jetliner and it sounds awfully close. Why in the world is that jet flying so low?

And the guy with the camera turns to the World Trade Center just as it strikes the building. And that is the most popular video of the first plane strike. Because not anybody else was just looking up at the Twin Towers thinking that something was going to happen.

Now after that, everybody was focused on the first tower because it was on fire and smoke was rising from it. So of course, all kinds of stations are covering what had just happened. There are people who have gotten, if they have VHS recorders or something else, they've gotten those out and now they're filming, like look at the damage and firemen going into the building and things like that.

All kinds of cameras are going at that point. And so then we have many more angles of the second plane striking. But very few of what happened with the first plane. So this is one of those days where a lot of people are reminiscing, praying, remembering, remembering where you were when you had heard the news.

Now I've shared this story before, but I actually did not hear the news when it happened. I was living in Kansas, so that's the central time zone. It's an hour back from everything else that was happening in Eastern time.

This was a Tuesday, if you will recall. It was Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. I was in my fifth semester of college at a junior college. At a junior college, you're supposed to do four semesters. I was there for a fifth semester.

And it was because just the plans that I had fell through. I ended up there for one more semester. I didn't graduate after two years anyway. I did graduate after two and a half years. But I'm finishing up, like I have one or two credits left that I got to do.

It really wasn't much at all. So because I had very few things to do, I did not have class on Tuesday and Thursday. The only thing I had Tuesday and Thursday was band because I was in the pep band. I played at the football games and stuff like that.

But practice for band wasn't until like one or two o 'clock in the afternoon. And so I slept in in the morning. And in the house that I was staying in, I was actually staying with a couple of missionaries.

They had a basement they didn't use and they just let me live in the basement. And it was for hardly nothing. They charged me 50 bucks a month or something. It was just an incredibly gracious deal. But they both worked.

So in the morning, they got up, left for work. I don't think they had children. It's funny that I don't remember that, but I'm pretty sure they were a childless couple, at least at this time. And so I just slept in and I woke up sometime a little bit later.

It might've been 10 or 11 o 'clock. But even then, I just got up and started doing homework. I did not have internet and I didn't turn the TV on. I had a computer, but it wasn't connected to the internet.

So I got on my computer and I just started doing homework and I did some writing. I wrote a lot in those days too. And then sometime as I'm kind of starting to think about, I may need to get going because I've got band coming up in not too long.

My phone rang and I answered it. And it was the wife of the couple that I was staying with. And she said, when my husband gets home, tell him to take the cars and go fill up with gas because we probably only have today to do that.

I've been told gas will be dried up by tomorrow. And I'm just like, what? What did you just say? And I think my reply to her was, okay, I'll tell him. And then it dawned on me what she said. And I'm like, oh, wait, the gas will be dried up?

And she said, yeah, there's huge lines outside the gas stations right now. I'm like, wow, okay. All right, I'll let him know. And then I thought, I should probably find out what's happening. Maybe I need to go and get gas in my car.

So I called my dad. My dad was working at a radio station. I worked at a radio station too, but I was very part-time. I would just kind of come in when they called me to record spots and commercials and things like this.

Different station than what my dad was working for. So I called my dad at the radio station and I said, hey, the wife of the couple that I live with just called and said that we need to go fill up our vehicles with gas because the gas might dry up.

Do you know what's going on? And he said, well, I imagine it has something to do with the terrorist attack this morning. He said, I haven't heard about gas drying up, but I'm sure it's connected to that somehow.

And I went, oh, okay, terrorist attack. Yeah, where did that happen? And he said, well, New York City. The Pentagon, there was another one and I think they crashed the plane in Pennsylvania. And I said, so New York City, what kind of terrorist attack?

And he said, well, they flew planes into the World Trade Center and the buildings collapsed and they're not there anymore. And I'm like, what? And he goes, hang on a second, I gotta get on the air. And he put me on hold.

And when you are put on hold, you can still hear what's on the air through the phone. And I listened to my dad come out of a song and he read from Luke chapter 13. And in Luke 13, verses one through five, there were some people that came to Jesus and told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

And Jesus answered them, do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will likewise perish.

And as I'm listening to my dad reading this, this is where it gets more relevant. Verse four, or those 18 on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them. Do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem?

No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Now, one of the reasons my dad was reading this was because there were already some opportunistic, evangelistic preachers out there who were saying that this attack that happened was a judgment, it was the judgment of God on our nation.

Repentance Rather Than Speculation About Judgment

And I don't discount that. I think that's still true. However, it's more realistic to look at this situation as a matter of repent or perish. And that's exactly what Jesus was talking about there in Luke chapter 13.

I mean, it could have happened upon any city, any city in our nation was worthy of this kind of attack. Didn't mean New York City was more evil than Los Angeles or San Francisco or Chicago or something like that.

But we should be sober-minded and reflect upon this and see that we must turn from our sin to the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. You probably remember, see you at the poll. Does see you at the poll still happen?

There's that Wednesday in September, isn't it the fourth Wednesday in September where students all across the nation will gather at the flagpole of their schools and will pray? Well, see you at the poll in September of 2001, that was the largest attended see you at the poll in the nation.

And it was like three times the figure of what it usually is or something like that, probably even more than that. The radio station that I worked for, they kept tabs on turnout for see you at the poll.

So they would be asking parents, call in the radio station, tell us how many were at the flagpole this morning. And so they kept tabs on that and kept tabs on it every year. And that was by far the largest attended year before or since.

Never had been a bigger see you at the poll than that one in 2001. So many people thought after 9 -11 happened that there was some great revival that was gonna begin sweeping the nation. We know now that was not the case.

And in fact, New York City has very much forgotten what happened on that day. Muslim terrorists hijacking planes and crashing them into the World Trade Centers, killing thousands of people. And what has happened since then?

Just this past November, the citizens of New York City elected a Muslim communist to be the mayor of New York. Absolutely astonishing. Less than 25 years. Just a little over half a generation. I think we kind of measure generations by about 25 years, don't we?

But a true generation is 40 years. So here just a generation of young people later and already they have forgotten what happened on that day. And so that's one of the reasons why I was meditating on Psalm 44.

God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old. See, we can't just automatically expect that our young people are going to remember what has happened in the past and the way that we need to be directing our futures.

They have to be guided. They have to be told. The largest demographic that voted for Mamdani, the mayor of New York City now, the largest demographic he had was voters under the age of 30. And he carried over 60 of the vote of voters between the ages of 18 and 30.

Now, the opponents that he had running against him, I mean, Cuomo, why in the world was he even in the race? They really did not put up much of a fight to produce anybody of substance to go against Mamdani.

Almost felt like he ran unopposed. And the people that voted for any of the other candidates, it was just because they loathed seeing a communist Muslim as the mayor of New York City. So they were willing to vote for anybody, but he carried over 50 of the vote.

So even without those other two guys, he had the majority. And of course it was the younger demographic that favored him and voted for him. But where were the people who witnessed 9 -11? Where were they in teaching their children what had happened so that these same kinds of errors wouldn't get repeated again?

Charlie Kirk, False Revival, and the Church's Mission

Yeah, like I said earlier, there was this expectation that there was some big revival that was going to sweep the nation, and we know that didn't happen. Same sort of thing happened when Charlie Kirk was killed a year ago.

And that happened one year ago yesterday. There was this expectation that this large revival was gonna happen, and especially with some of the things that we saw, like the Charlie Kirk memorial service, how many people were there, how often the gospel was proclaimed, the songs that were sung, thousands and thousands of people praising God, worshiping him, even though we lost such an influential figure in our culture.

I think it was the largest funeral or memorial service for a non-politician in United States history. I think I heard a statistic like that. But even since Charlie Kirk, we haven't seen revival in our nation after that either.

And in fact, I made a video, and you can go find it, because I uploaded it just like a week after Charlie Kirk was assassinated. And it's one of the what videos. It's the what video that I did on Charlie Kirk.

But I said in that video that eventually, this whole thing is gonna get overrun with conspiracy theorists and opportunists who are trying to win you to their cause, and just a plethora of false teachers, like the NAR movement, for example, New Apostolic Reformation, because Charlie Kirk was involved with them, and he wanted to pull them into the TPUSA stuff that he was doing.

So I saw that that group would eventually be like the dominant Christian group, professing Christian group, that would kind of rise up after the loss of Charlie Kirk. But I said that just days after he was assassinated.

Now, I'm not a prophet, and I will say, I did not expect it to happen as fast as it did, because almost immediately you had opportunists that were jumping on their social media pages and saying things like Israel did it, or Erica Kirk did it.

You know, whatever other conspiracy theorists they could come up with. And it was all for clicks. It was all for attention. They really did not have anything substantive to support these claims that they were making.

But just like we didn't see revival after 9 -11, we did not see revival after Charlie Kirk. There is that sudden burst that will happen whenever a major tragedy takes place like this. There's a sudden burst of intense faith, or at least something that looks like faith.

It's certainly not sustaining faith. But you'll see a lot of people will go to God. We need God in America again. See what's happened to our nation. We left God out, and this is what is happening. So there will be something like that.

There will be that initial burst. And it's interesting that, I mean, it's almost like, I was gonna say universally. We're talking about our nation. It seems like, I mean universally in the sense that every time this happens, every time there is some major disaster like this, people go to God.

There will be a turn of people from sin, from an attitude of sin. It might be the better way to put it. They'll turn from an attitude of sin to an attitude of God, but then it always turns out to be very temporary.

And I do pray that God would stir in the hearts of this people. But you know, revival will not happen in this nation without the church. It will not happen without the church. The Apostle Paul said to Timothy, 1 Timothy 3, 16, I believe this is, the church is the pillar and buttress of the truth.

So it is what holds up the truth and defends the truth from those who attempt to malign it. There's not gonna be revival in the nation without the church and without the church proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ.

There was a very stupid video that came out after Charlie Kirk was assassinated, after his memorial service. And it was with Mark Driscoll. And Driscoll was in TPUSA studios and he was talking about this revival that was happening.

And if you wanna talk about an opportunist, that's Mark Driscoll. But he was talking about this revival that was taking place across the nation. And he said that God has bypassed the church. That was just the stupidest, most absurd statement that I've ever heard.

And if I was with the guy, I would have said bypass the church. Revival can't happen without the church. What are you talking about? The church is where the gospel is because we are the people who have been saved by the declaration of the gospel.

And we are those who have been commissioned to go out with the gospel, proclaiming to those who are lost, shining a light in the midst of a dark world. We're the ones that have the truth that God has brought to a knowledge of the truth so that we may then take the light of the truth into this dark and dying world that people may hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and turn from their sin and believe it's the only way to be saved.

So there is not going to be revival without the church. And we have to see revival happen in the church first. Truly, when you're talking about revival, like it has to happen in the church first. It doesn't happen out in the culture or in the world.

That wouldn't be a true revival because what's being revived, what's being revived is the church. Revive means to enliven again, not give life to for the first time. And that would be a move of the gospel in the culture.

You couldn't call that revival because they're not being revived. It would be the lost who are suddenly moved to believe in the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We could certainly see a great move of evangelism that would happen in the country.

That's not the same thing as revival though. So if there's going to be revival, it has to happen in the church. And there have to be more churches that are committed to the sound teaching of the word of God and the gospel of Christ before we're ever going to see revival happen.

There are too many churches that aren't doing that. And in fact, a growing number of churches are not committed to the gospel or they're more committed to pragmatic strategies or entertainment or even being culturally relevant or politically relevant.

I think there are an increasing number of churches that are more politically driven than there used to be. That's okay. I mean, it is good for us as Christians to be politically involved. There should be more Christians involved in politics.

I wish more Christians were running for office, but that's not the primary goal of the church. The primary job of the church is to worship God, caring for its members, loving one another. But as the apostle Paul says in Galatians chapter six, as we have opportunity, let us show charity to everyone.

And especially we have that duty of taking the message of the gospel to the world. It's not changing politics. It's not changing the cultural climate. It's sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. And then through the sharing of the gospel, as more people come to faith and are saved, then we may also see certain cultural things change.

But you can't change those things ahead of the gospel because it requires a heart change. And without the heart change, we won't see cultural change. So our commitment needs to be to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I truly pray that more of that would happen. I truly pray that that would especially happen in pulpits all across America, that they would abandon these sneaky ways of doing church and instead go back to what God said about how to do church in the scriptures.

Modeling churches after what we see in the Bible, being committed to calling out sin, pointing people to the Lord Jesus Christ, the exposition of the word, loving one another, being obedient to God, pursuing holiness.

All of these things are important to happen in the church before we're gonna see a massive change happen in the culture. But I thank you for listening to me thinking about this, musing over this as we consider this day, the memory of this day being the 25th anniversary now of the terrorist attacks that happened on our nation, September 11th, 2001.

Islam is a very, very deadly religion and it is growing very quickly. But again, the best way to fight against that is gonna be sharing the gospel of Christ. May there be many Muslims who will come to hear the gospel and turn from this wicked religion that would lead them to hell if they continue in it and instead they come to the truth of Christ and by faith in him, they are saved.

Why G3 Ministries Collapsed

Let's get to some questions. So as I said, I've got one email and one voicemail. Let me start with the email. This is from Sue. Sue says, hello from Pennsylvania. Used to live there. I don't know where you're from in Pennsylvania, Sue, but I lived in Milton, Pennsylvania for about four years.

I can tell you my exact address and my phone number. Even though I haven't lived there in, goodness, how long has that been? I was 11 years old when we left Pennsylvania. I just turned 46. Since Becky spilled the beans on that, on the podcast last week.

35 years, it's been 35 years since I've lived in Pennsylvania. I've been through there since then, but it's just been that long since I've lived there. Anyway, Sue says, I listened to your explanation of the latest G3 scandal.

Just to give you the Cliff Notes version of what we're talking about here. I did a video on this. The board members of G3, who are also elders at Praise Mill Baptist Church, from which the organization G3 came out of, they emailed, well, emailed, they snail mailed it.

They sent it through the mail, through the postal service. They mailed these packets that showed Tom Buck, the pastor that I worked with in Lindale, Texas, that showed him plagiarizing entire swaths of sermons.

At least that was the claim. But when I did a video showing that what they were accusing Tom of was not accurate, yes, there were some things that he needed to do a better job of citing, and he recognized that, and he's made those corrections.

But it was not like the serial plagiarism that they were accusing him of. So I did a video that was clearing him, but also calling out what G3 did was just incredibly dishonest and wicked, and really disqualified those men as elders of Praise Mill Baptist Church.

So Sue says, I appreciated the breakdown of why the accusations that were made against Tom were such a huge stretch. I did not follow G3 closely, so maybe I'm missing something, and maybe there isn't an answer to my question.

But why? Why the scandal with Josh Bice attacking others anonymously, and now a very similar situation with anonymous accusations? Of course, the answer is sin nature, but is it envy and jealousy of other ministries?

A warped method to hopefully raise themselves? It is so disheartening and confusing. Thank you for your ministry. Because of his amazing grace, Sue. Well, I appreciate that very much, Sue, and I appreciate you listening as well.

So kind of, again, what Sue is talking about, she's mentioning not just the scandal that happened with Tom, these anonymous packets that got sent out accusing him of this, and we know now that it was the guys at G3, they've owned up to it, though they haven't really repented of it.

They've apologized, and they have resigned as elders of Praise Mill, but there has not been repentance and restoration. And I think that disciplinary process is ongoing, by the way. I think the elders at First Baptist Church of Lindale are still attempting to work through repentance and reconciliation with the men who did this, who tried to do this with Tom.

But even before this scandal had happened, a year ago, it was the scandal with Josh Bice, who was the president and founder of G3, which, by the way, stands for Gospel, Grace, and Glory. Now, ever since all of this happened, Josh Bice scandal, this scandal with the Praise Mill elders, they've all resigned, G3 has been dissolved.

It is the end of the G3 conference, which is sad. I mean, some of you know how committed I was to G3. Attending G3, I advertised G3. We had lots of fond memories meeting all kinds of people at G3. The last big conference that they did was 8 ,000 people.

I mean, it's amazing how big it got. It started as just a local church conference at Praise Mill Baptist Church in Douglasville, Georgia. I'm currently in Dawsonville, and I think I've said, I think I've called this Douglasville several times.

That's on the other side of Atlanta. I'm to the northeast of Atlanta. But anyway, yeah, and it was just a small church conference in this little Baptist church in Douglasville, and then it turned into this huge thing.

It became the largest attended, reformed conference in the country by the time they had their last big conference, and eventually it had to be dissolved. So it's very sad to see what has happened with G3.

It's sad to see it go. I will have many fond memories of it, but it definitely became something a little too big for its britches that behind the scenes just became this scandalous thing that ended up burning the whole thing down, very unfortunately.

Now with Josh Bice, this was a year ago. Josh was attacking people anonymously, but that was just Josh. He was even attacking some of the speakers of G3 anonymously. One of the most infamous examples of this was he had mailed Julie Royce of the Royce Report, who I've called a gossip rag.

I don't call that credible journalism to any extent, but he mailed Julie Royce and told her that she needed to look into Vodie Bauckham, who had raised over a million dollars when he was having his heart attack, but what happened to all of that money after his transplant?

Did he get a heart transplant? I think it was, wasn't it? It was a heart transplant. So after all of that, which certainly cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but what about the rest of that money?

What happened to that? So Josh, using an anonymous account, was attempting to goad Julie Royce in looking into this and doing a story on what happened with all that money that Vodie raised. Is he just holding onto it?

Did he spend it on himself? So that's just one of the more infamous examples of what Bice was doing through these anonymous accounts. And some of you have probably heard lately, because Tom had said this on X, Justin Peters has made similar comments that Josh has been repentant and he is bearing the fruit of repentance even to this day.

So it'll be interesting to see if he's able to return back to ministry. I don't know if he's qualified for that or not. I'm not making that determination now and it wouldn't be up to me anyway. But it is, I rejoice to hear, it's good news to hear that Josh has been repentant and has been restored by the church that he's currently attending, which is not Praise Mill Baptist Church.

Part of his discipline was he had to be removed from the church, but they also excommunicated his wife and children, even though they didn't do anything wrong. So the Praise Mill Baptist Church elders were very heavy handed in the way they dealt with the discipline of Josh Bice.

And yet what they did was worse than what Josh did, because Josh was just one guy. This was like all of the elders of Praise Mill who were also board members of G3 conspiring together to attack Tom. And Sue raises a great question, why?

Why? What was the point of all of this? What did they expect that they were going to accomplish with any of this? What was Josh going to accomplish? What were the elders going to accomplish? Why did they even bother?

And it certainly did not succeed in destroying Tom's ministry, but it did succeed in destroying their own and burning down G3 and them having to resign from Praise Mill Baptist Church. So very heartbreaking.

I'm sorry to hear about all of this. And again, how much love I had for G3. I spent literally thousands of dollars on G3, attending the conferences. I got booth space, which was very kind of them. I did in the first year.

I paid, the very first year that I went with a booth, I paid for that myself. The first year that I went, I went as just an attendee and I paid for that. Then the next time we did a booth and I paid for that.

But then after that, G3 started getting really generous to me and they would offer me booth space, but I still had to pay to get there. I paid for the books that we would hand out and things like that.

I had stuff for sale at my table. I sold copies of my books, but by the end of the whole thing, I was giving them all out. It was never for money anyway. It was never for me to make a profit and I never did make a profit.

I spent more money to get there than I actually made being there. But anyway, yeah, I spent thousands of dollars on being able to attend, not just the G3 conferences, not just the national conference, but also the expository workshops because I was involved in putting those together.

I put together the largest attended expository workshop when it was under the umbrella of G3. Mike Riccardi was the guest speaker at that one where we brought pastors in and we taught them how to be expository preachers.

I really loved my time doing that. It was so wonderful. It was a blessing to me and I learned a lot. I think that my ability as a preacher was improved by doing that quite a bit. And I still highly recommend that to anybody if you're able to take in one of those expository workshops.

I want to do one in my church. I've been talking about it ever since I came to Providence Reformed Baptist Church in Casa Grande. I've been talking about doing an expository workshop. I'm coming up on three years now and I still have not yet done one.

I can only speculate. I do know a little bit of stuff that was happening behind the scenes. I was made privy to more information, especially when I made that video in defense of Tom. Which, by the way, I caught that there were some people online saying that I got paid to make that video.
