DAY 166: Psalms 134, 146–150
DAY 166: Psalms 134, 146–150
The Book of Psalms ends exactly where all of history is headed: worship. After generations of prayers, tears, repentance, battles, victories, failures, and restoration, the final songs lift our eyes beyond ourselves and beyond Israel to the glory of God filling all creation. Psalm 134 calls the servants of the Lord to bless Him continually, while Psalms 146–150 build into a magnificent crescendo of praise. We are told not to trust in princes, but in the Lord who reigns forever. We see the God who heals the brokenhearted, numbers the stars, sustains creation, and remains faithful to His covenant people. Then the circle widens until angels, sun, moon, stars, mountains, animals, kings, rulers, young and old, and finally every living creature are summoned to worship. The Psalter begins with the blessed man of Psalm 1 and ends with a redeemed creation praising its Creator. These songs find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the greater Son of David, through whom all things are being brought under God's rule. The final command of the Psalter is also the final destiny of the world: “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”
