DAY 200: 2 Kings 18; 2 Chronicles 29–31; Psalm 48

Welcome to 5-Minute Bible, your daily guide for your daily reading. Today is July the 19th and we'll be looking at 2 Kings 18, 2 Chronicles 29 -31 and Psalm 48. Now yesterday, Isaiah lifted our eyes beyond the immediate crisis to worldwide judgment, resurrection, hope, and the promise that death itself will be swallowed forever.

Hezekiah’s Reform in Judah

Now today we return to the historical narrative in Judah. The wicked king Ahaz has died. Israel has already fallen to Assyria and Judah is very vulnerable in a dangerous world. But now Hezekiah, the son of the evil Ahaz, becomes king.

And this is one of the great reform movements in all of the Old Testament. Psalm 41 fits beautifully here because it celebrates Zion, the city of the great king, secure not because of human strength but because God is in her midst.

And in that way, 2 Kings 18 summarizes Hezekiah's reign with remarkable praise. He does what was right in the sight of the Lord. He removes the high places. He breaks down the sacred pillars. He cuts down the ash ripples and even destroys the bronze serpent that Moses made because the people had begun burning incense to it.

Hezekiah trusts the Lord. He clings to Him and he does not depart from following Him, which makes him one of the great kings of all Judean history. Then in 2 Chronicles 29 -31, we get a fuller picture of his reform.

In the first year of his reign, Hezekiah opens the doors of the Lord's house again. Remember, it was Ahaz who had shut them. And then he gathers the priests and the Levites and he commands them to consecrate themselves and calls them to cleanse the temple.

After this, once the house of the Lord is cleansed, sacrifice, song, and worship are restored again. The Levites sing with the instruments of David again. The people bow and worship again and joy returns to Jerusalem.

Then Hezekiah sends out messengers throughout all of Israel and Judah inviting the people to come and celebrate the Passover. Some mock him, but others humble themselves and they come and the feast is celebrated with great joy and nothing like it had been seen in Jerusalem for many years.

Finally, the people destroy the idols. They support the priests and the Levites and they restore the proper order of worship. At the same time, 2 Kings 18 reminds us that faithfulness does not remove every threat.

Hezekiah rebels against Assyria. He defeats the Philistines and he trusts the Lord and yet Sennacherib still invades Judah. The Assyrian crisis is beginning and Jerusalem will soon learn whether her confidence is truly in the Lord or in something else.

Returning to the Lord Before Fixing Everything Else

Now with that, as you read today, I want you to ask the following question. Where does true reformation begin when a people had previously drifted far from God? These chapters answer that clearly. Reformation begins by returning to the Lord in cleansed worship, renewed obedience, humble joy, and restored confidence in the God who dwells with His people.

And in that way, the central pattern in these chapters is the contrast between the kings Ahaz and Hezekiah. Ahaz closed the temple. Hezekiah opens it. Ahaz copied the pagan practices. Hezekiah restored biblical worship.

Ahaz trusted Assyria, whereas Hezekiah trusts the Lord. Ahaz led Judah into darkness. Hezekiah calls the people out of darkness and back into covenant light. And this matters because Hezekiah does not begin with foreign policy or military strategy or economic reform.

Judah is surrounded by danger. And Hezekiah's first act is not military strategy but worship. He knows the nation's deepest problem is not Assyria. The deepest problem is that Judah has turned from the Lord.

And that gives this passage sharp application for us because when life feels threatening, we often want to fix everything around us before dealing with the issue of worship, before dealing with repentance and obedience.

But Hezekiah teaches us that the very first question is not, how do I regain control? The very first question is, where have I neglected the Lord? Well, in the same way, the bronze serpent is an important warning.

Something that once belonged as a good moment in Israel's history has now become an idol. That means even good gifts or old victories, sacred memories, and religious objects can become corrupt when our heart clings to them instead of God.

On the other hand, the Passover invitation shows mercy. Hezekiah calls even the remnant of the northern tribes to return. Israel had fallen, but the invitation still goes out, return to the Lord and He will return to you.

Zion’s Security in Psalm 48

Finally, Psalm 48 teaches the meaning of true security. Zion is beautiful and glad because God is in her palaces. Kings may gather, nations may tremble, threats may rise, but the city of God is secure only because God himself is her refuge.

And in that way, Hezekiah points powerfully to Jesus Christ as the reforming son of David, but he's not the final king. Hezekiah opens the temple, but Christ is still the true temple where God is going to dwell with his people.

Hezekiah restores sacrifice, but Christ is the final sacrifice whose blood cleanses sinners completely. Hezekiah celebrates the Passover, but in Christ, the true Passover lamb delivers his people from judgment.

In the same way, Psalm 48 celebrates Zion as the city of the great king, and that hope ultimately reaches beyond Jerusalem and Hezekiah to Christ and his kingdom. He is the king who makes his people secure, not by walls of stone, but by his death, resurrection, ascension, and reign.

Hezekiah also destroys the bronze serpent because the people had turned a sign of salvation into an idol. Christ later teaches us that just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man will be lifted up.

The old bronze sign had to be destroyed when it became an idol, but the reality to which it pointed is fulfilled in Jesus crucified. And then finally, Hezekiah's Passover invitation anticipates the gathering work of Jesus.

Scattered people are going to be summoned home. Mockers are going to refuse. The humble are going to come. Joy is going to be restored. In a far greater way, the gospel calls sinners from Israel and the nations to come to the true feast through the true Son of David.

Hope in the Greater Son of David

So after 200 days in the Bible so far this year, we end with hope. Ahaz, the wicked king, ruined worship. Israel fell into exile. The nations were raging, and Assyria was threatening on every side. But God raises up a reforming king.

He restores worship in Zion, and He points us forward to the greater Son of David who will come and cleanse His people forever. So as you read 2 Kings 18 and 2 Chronicles 29 -31 and Psalm 48, notice that reformation begins by returning to the Lord.

And yet also notice that reform does not mean that the battle is over because next week the Assyrian threat is going to intensify, Hezekiah's faith is going to be tested, and Isaiah will continue pointing Judah beyond fear to the Holy King who saves.
