- 14:33
- We all had sore throats and we could hardly talk and so it's developed over the years into this tradition in which we we like to worship worship together as We gather together and you can worship as you sing when you sing you're singing to the
- 14:48
- Lord and you can worship because you're learning Again, you're hearing the story again now the temptation that anytime we sing
- 14:55
- Christmas carols is that it Brings up kinds of memories all kinds of memories and that's not a bad thing
- 15:01
- I mean you hear a song and you think about grandma or you think about sitting around the Christmas tree or something like that but tonight
- 15:09
- Try to think about the words of every song think about what every word is saying think about the message

- 25:13
- Mary had been betrothed to Joseph before they came together She was found to be with child from the
- 25:18
- Holy Spirit and her husband Joseph Being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame
- 25:24

- 34:42
- It came upon a song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold.
- 35:05
- Peace on the earth, goodwill to men, from heaven's all -gracious
- 35:14
- King. The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.
- 35:29
- Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long.
- 35:41
- Beneath the angels' strains have rolled two thousand years and rolled.
- 35:54
- And men had war with men, here's not the love song which they bring.
- 36:05
- Oh, hush the noisy men of strife, and hear the angels sing.
- 36:18
- Oh, yea, beneath life's crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who twirl along the climbing way with painful steps and so.
- 36:42
- Look now for glad and golden hours, come swiftly on the west beside the way, and hear the angels sing.
- 37:06
- For though the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever -circling years comes round the age of old, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors bring, and love the song which now the angels sing.
- 38:06
- And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their flocks by night, and an angel of the
- 38:13
- Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them,
- 38:19
- Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
- 38:25
- For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the
- 38:31
- Lord, and this will be a sign for you. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
- 38:37
- And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts praising God and saying,
- 38:43
- Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.
- 38:49
- When the angels went away from them and to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the
- 38:59
- Lord has made known to us. And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger.
- 39:05
- And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.
- 39:11
- And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.
- 39:19
- And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God, for they had heard and seen as it had been told them.
- 39:58
- Shepherds watched, listening to lambs bleat,
- 40:06
- Tired backs, worn out and cold feet,
- 40:14
- All life long, living like outcasts,
- 40:23
- All life long, longing for life.
- 40:31
- A dazzling light, the voice of an angel,
- 40:40
- Gripped with fear, terrified they fell,
- 40:47
- One like a man, yet awesome and holy,
- 40:55
- A face so fierce and yet strangely kind.
- 41:05
- Not be afraid, I've good news of great joy,

- 41:19

- 41:27

- 41:42
- And all at once, the air filled with angels,
- 41:49
- Glory shone, of holiness they smelt,
- 41:58
- Glory be to God in the highest,
- 42:06
- And peace on earth to all those

- He loves. Do not be afraid,

- He knows the world, makes the day,
- 49:33
- Glories of His righteousness. I must ask your indulgence.
- 50:26
- I'm always stupid nervous doing these, because I always point out little details from the familiar story that maybe we don't notice, plus it's kind of scary up here.
- 50:49
- All right. If you've been online for any length of time, you know about memes.
- 50:58
- They're everywhere. Some are political, some are poignant, some are riotously hilarious.
- 51:06
- One of my favorite ones makes the round this time of year. It's a text -only meme that po -
- 51:14
- I told you
- 51:21
- I was nervous. It's a text -only meme that posits the differences that might have been had the three wise men been the three wise women.
- 51:33
- They would have cleaned the stable, brought food and clothing, and given the
- 51:38
- Holy Family practical gifts. Aside from being one of the few memes that make me chuckle every single time
- 51:46
- I read it, there are a few things wrong with this. Perhaps the most glaring is that there is no set number of the wise men, or magi, listed in their appearance in Matthew 2, and the accepted names of the magi,
- 52:05
- Melchior, Caspar, and... Balthasar, I never can remember that one,
- 52:13
- Balthasar, seem to have come from a manuscript written 500 years after the events.
- 52:20
- You might have heard of the most famous iteration and things that these names appear in.
- 52:27
- It was written by a Civil War general, and it's called Ben -Hur. All we truly know from the biblical record is that the magi came from the east and went to Herod the
- 52:39
- Great to ask about Jesus. The king assembled his advisors, and they figured out that Jesus had been born in Bethlehem, and he dispatched the magi to find
- 52:49
- Jesus and tell Herod about the child, quote, that I too may come and worship him, end quote.
- 52:58
- The Christmas star, whatever astronomical event it was, showed the magi which house to go to, and they were delighted once they were there.
- 53:07
- They entered the house, saw Jesus, left him three gifts, and left for home another way to avoid
- 53:13
- Herod. Those are the bare bones of the story. Now let's look at a couple of things.
- 53:21
- First of all, verse 11 of Matthew 2 makes it plain that the small family is living in a house.
- 53:28
- This indicates that the mad rush to Jerusalem for the child's presentation and Mary's purification is over, and they can stay somewhere a little more stable than an inn, pun unintended.
- 53:44
- After all, the census was still going on, so after Jerusalem and a stopover in Nazareth that Luke mentions at the end of his nativity story, the family went back to Bethlehem.
- 53:57
- But more to the point, let's talk about the three gifts that the magi gave them, gold, frankincense, and myrrh, according to verse 11.
- 54:06
- What odd gifts to give to a baby. But were they really that odd? I've read that each of these gifts symbolized one of the three roles that Jesus holds, gold for his kingship, incense for his priesthood, and myrrh for his role to die as our savior, and each of these interpretations is completely true.
- 54:30
- I would argue, though, that these gifts were also very practical. The magi were very wise men.
- 54:38
- They were in touch with God. They were shown when, where, and why to go.
- 54:45
- Though it's not explicitly stated in Scripture, I think they were also told what to bring.
- 54:54
- There was no way for them to know just how greatly God used those gifts to provide for the young family.
- 55:01
- The very night of the magi's visit, after they had left, an angel told
- 55:06
- Joseph to get Mary and Jesus to Egypt to protect them from King Herod, who was about to do something terrible.
- 55:15
- Verse 14 tells us that Joseph obeyed instantly, and verse 15 says they stayed there in Egypt until Herod died, though maddeningly we're not told how long that takes.
- 55:27
- The only thing we're certain of is that the entire events of the nativity story took approximately two years to unfold, and we're sure of that because Herod's order in verse 16 is to kill all the baby boys aged two and under.
- 55:47
- And in the flight to Egypt was to where Jehovah -Jireh, the God who provides, did just that.
- 55:54
- Joseph and Mary were so poor they could not even afford a lamb for Mary's purification sacrifice after Jesus' birth.
- 56:03
- They had to use two birds. How is a family that poor supposed to survive in one of the most expensive places to live in the entire ancient world?
- 56:18
- They could do it because through the Magi God had provided them with very expensive herbs, very expensive oils, as well as a stash of gold.
- 56:31
- Supplemented with Joseph's carpentry skills, which were universally needed and continue to be so to this day, the young family would be all right until it was safe for them to return to Nazareth.
- 56:44
- Matthew 2 .22 specifically says they did not return to Bethlehem, though the census in question historically went on for around four or five years.
- 56:56
- Gotta love bureaucracy. Because Herod's son was reigning there and they were afraid of him, so instead they went home.
- 57:06
- So you see, the gifts of the Magi turned out to be practical ones after all. No matter what you have to give,
- 57:12
- God can and will use it to care for his people. And yes, if you're one of his people, he'll take care of you.
- 57:20
- After all, God keeps his word. The song of skies
- 58:06
- Up in heaven clear stars shining
- 58:11
- Through the blue like silver eyes
- 58:17
- So of old the wise men watching

- 01:04:02
- God, and said, Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace according to your word.
- 01:04:08
- For my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all people, and a light for revelation to the
- 01:04:15
- Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. Well, may we depart in peace according to your word.
- 01:05:30
- Blessed hope, peace for our eyes have seen your salvation which you have which you have to every nation and of glory the eyes have seen him he is the light

- 01:09:15
- Silent Night Sleep in heavenly peace
- 01:10:09
- Sleep in heavenly peace
- 01:10:17
- Silent night
- 01:10:59
- Silent night
- 01:11:07
- Holy night Son of God Love's pure light
- 01:11:21
- Radiant beams from thy holy face
- 01:11:30
- With the dawn of redeeming grace
- 01:11:38
- Jesus, born at thy birth
- 01:11:48
- Jesus, born at thy birth
- 01:12:09
- Wow, there are truly a billion reasons to worship our Lord Jesus Christ. He is
- 01:12:15
- Cain, son of God, enjoying fellowship with God the Father, God the Holy Spirit.
- 01:12:21
- He took on flesh for us. He died for the death that we deserve. He is a good
- 01:12:27
- God. He has done great things for us. There is every reason for us this holiday season to remember him and to praise him for being so good to us.
- 01:12:35
- for taking on our sins if we just simply look upon him for salvation. It behooves every one of us to place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ because he is our only
- 01:12:46
- Redeemer, our only Savior, our only hope. And so there is every reason this holiday season to be full of joy because he has done the work.
- 01:12:53
- He has accomplished salvation for us to have eternal life. So let us praise him. Let us pray to him now.
- 01:13:00
- And we're not done yet because we have a great feast waiting for us in the back. So let us pray to God that he would bless that meal as we enjoy it together.
- 01:13:11
- So let us pray. God in heaven, thank you so much for sending your son down as a babe.
- 01:13:18
- He deserved all royalty. He deserved all renown, but yet instead he,
- 01:13:25
- Lord, condescended all the way down to be born to poor parents.
- 01:13:33
- Lord, he lived a life despised by men, rejected, and yet he lived a life perfect in your eyes, perfect according to your standard, but yet was murdered anyways.
- 01:13:46
- Lord, we know that he did this all willingly so that we can have salvation if we place our trust in him.
- 01:13:51
- So I pray, God, that as we look to Jesus, as we see his story, as he came to be born only to die, that we would place our trust in his sacrificial work and that his work would have its way in redeeming us and changing us and causing us to live a life of hope because Jesus Christ has accomplished salvation for his people.
- 01:14:12
- And so may we look to him and reject our sin and grab hold of Jesus and praise him all our days, including this
- 01:14:19
- December, including this holiday month, Lord, because Jesus Christ is worthy. God in heaven,
- 01:14:25
- I thank you that we can enjoy a meal together as we consider what Jesus has done. May you bless the food to our body and bless the fellowship that surrounds it.
- 01:14:33
- And may your name be glorified in us tonight. Thank you, Lord.
