The term that we translate miracle in the New Testament is the word power. So it's just an expression of God's power.

Why do so many Western Christians feel like they've never actually seen one?

Jesus' Miracles as Signs of His Identity

I'm your host, Cassian Blino, and today we're going to talk about miracles, which we have talked about miracles with Lee Strobel in the case for miracles, and that was amazing. You know, what a great person to talk to about it, but today we're going to turn it on its head.

What is the purpose of miracles? What are they actually revealing? Is it God saying he's God of this world? He can do what no one else can do? Or is it something else? You know, why did Jesus heal blindness, raise people from the dead, walk on water, calm storms?

Why those miracles? Why not anything else, like making aliens appear, making things that don't exist appear? You know, if miracles are happening today, because I believe that they still do, why do so many Western Christians feel like they've never actually seen one?

I maybe have seen one, but it's not like it's a common occurrence. Today, I've brought in one of the world's leading scholars on miracles, Dr. Craig Keener. Welcome back to the show. You're going to help us understand how Jesus and Jews understood miracles, why Jesus was performing those specific miracles, and the reports of modern miracles.

It's great to be with you. Now, the copies sold, I don't get credit for that. That's my readers, but thanks. So kind. So clearly an author. So, miracles.

Why do you personally, and I know your story, you shared your book with me, Impossible Love, but do you feel like you've had a lot of experience personally with miracles that allowed you to talk extensively on this subject?

Not as much as some of the people I've interviewed, but I've had some experience with them. Yeah, but I didn't originally write the book because of that. I originally wrote the book because I was writing commentaries on the New Testament.

No! And, you know, we've got miracle stories in the New Testament, and so people say, well, the skeptics were saying those things can't be true because if those things were happening, somebody would have seen them, somebody credible.

I'm like, well, duh. We have plenty of eyewitnesses. Maybe you're just not listening in the right circles, but anyway.

Craig Keener's Personal Witness of Healing

What is the last or favorite or most memorable miracle you've personally witnessed? Boy, that's hard to narrow down.

One of the recent ones where I was close to was actually when I was in Singapore. They were having, some of us who were there as scholars, they were having us pray for people who were ill, various things, and there was this woman in a wheelchair who had, I think, broken her ankle or something.

And anyway, I was praying for her, and then I went on and prayed for some other people. And then after a while, I heard them calling my name to come up to the platform, and this woman was walking around, and she was pushing a wheelchair, and they had me get in the wheelchair, and her pushing me around.

They say, Craig Keener prayed for this woman, and she got healed. I'm like, wait, I just asked Jesus. He's the one who did it.

Wait, you healed a woman in a wheelchair? I didn't heal her. Jesus healed her. I just asked. Jesus? So she was in a wheelchair, you prayed for her, and through your prayer, Jesus healed her, and she got up?

Yeah, but I mean, somebody else could have prayed for her, too. I mean, it was Jesus who did it. But you asked for ones that I'd seen, so that was one that I saw. Were people losing their mind?

Some people. I would be losing my mind. Because that, I mean, how long was she in the wheelchair for? I don't know. She got in that wheelchair last week. I'm just kidding. That would be, I mean, I've seen, you hear about it.

But, you know, when I think of miracles that I have personally witnessed, it's one of those things where it's like, only God could have done that. Or, you know, things just working out right at the perfect timing, and it just feels like that kind of divine intervention.

Yeah, I have those a lot. And that's, you know, I feel like those are like God winks, maybe not classified as miracles, but how would you classify a miracle? You know, what, in your simplest definition, would it be?

Theologians often speak of it as special divine action, which is just a way of distinguishing it from the way God works all the time. I mean, God doesn't work all around us. You can't get much more miraculous, in a sense, than our DNA.

I mean, that's amazing. But sometimes God does something out of the ordinary, extraordinary. So we call it special divine action. Through history, the usual definition that Christians gave to miracles were not something against nature, but something above nature, that is something different from the way God usually works, something that gets our attention and generates awe.

And then a couple centuries ago, a skeptic philosopher named David Hume defined miracles as that which is a violation of natural law. And he defined natural law as that which can't be violated, and therefore said miracles can't happen, which is a way of trying to get rid of them by definition.

His argument was really bad, and philosophers have been critiquing it ever since. But yeah, his main thing was, we don't have any credible eyewitnesses for miracles. But then there was a Pew Forum survey done, I think it was 2006, where hundreds of millions of people claimed to have witnessed miracles.

Surely you can get a credible eyewitness or two among those millions.

Signs, Wonders, and the New Testament Meaning of Miracle

Yeah, I agree. And I kind of like that. It's something that defies natural law. It's something that is extraordinary. But to us, we live in 2026. So we look back and we see the healing of the blind man, the lame walking, the walking on water.

It almost feels like a magic trick. It almost feels like something beyond understanding. And that's just our definition. That's how we see it in the terms of knowing what magic is and isn't, and knowing what technology is and isn't.

But when we say the word miracle, are we using the same word that maybe a first century Jew would be saying it? No.

The term that's used in the New Testament, it's often paired with signs and wonders. So I need to explain something about those. But the term that we translate miracle in the New Testament is the word power.

So it's just an expression of God's power. But going with signs and wonders, signs are things that get your attention. So, I mean, God can heal somebody without it being dramatic. He can work through medicine.

He can work through the natural potencies we put in our body. He can work through us getting enough sleep, which is a good idea, through nutrition. You know, he can work through all sorts of things. Okay, that's a good point.

And it can still be a gift of healing. But when it's dramatic, that's a sign. That's something that gets people's attention. And we see those a lot in the gospels and acts because it's on the cutting edge of evangelism.

So it's getting people's attention for the sake of the good news of the kingdom of God, the good news of God's reign. And therefore, it's tied into Old Testament promises of when God would reign and challenge, the promises of restoration.

So I guess, how does that translate? So they, when they saw like walking on water, obviously that is a sign. It's very dramatic. It's catching attention. But where they did like magic ever even like come up in their head or how did they characterize something like that?

Hi, Cass here. I have to complain about something because I haven't been completely honest with you. Yes, I love Jesus. And I do love weird, exegetical Bible discussions. But there's this whole other part of my life that I don't really show anybody on this channel.

I mean, there were ideas of magic back then, but they weren't like normally the kind of things Jesus did. And certainly, they weren't the things that Jesus normally did. Walking on water. That way, I mean, the closest thing you probably have in the Old Testament would be parting of the sea so people could walk through the sea.

Jesus Walking on Water and Divine Identity

But also, you have like in Job chapter 9, it speaks of God treading upon the waters, and it speaks of also God being with them. And I mean, it's language used for God. God passing by is also in the same context, which is also used for God various times in the Old Testament, especially when he reveals himself to Moses.

So in Mark chapter 6, where it says, Jesus was about to pass them by walking on water. That's like language that's used in the Old Testament for God. And then when you get to him saying to the disciples, they're saying, there's a ghost.

And he's saying, no, it's I. In Greek, that's ego in me. I am, which was used, obviously, in the Old Testament. God defines himself as I am. So I mean, it is appropriate to say I am he that way. But in the context of walking on water, Jesus is revealing I'm the divine one.

I see.

So in the context of language used to describe God, that was associated with the characteristic of a God that could walk on water. And so when Jesus walked on water, it was him saying, yeah, yeah, yeah, that is the same level that I'm at.

It wasn't, I'm human doing something crazy. It's, no, no, I am that thing that's able to do that. Okay. It makes me, you kind of already mentioned it with the parting of the Red Sea. But I think a lot about Moses when he, was it Moses?

Yeah, when he showed up and he was talking to Pharaoh and they started performing these magic tricks, the sorcerer came in and they turned the rod into a snake, and then they turned the Nile into blood.

And I think of the cartoon version, because it's a work of art, Prince of Egypt. And he's like, well, how did he turn the Nile red? And he's like, oh, that's easy. You just kind of mix these spices and then they replicate it.

And so my question is, were these miracles in the ancient world, something to be expected, something that was common, something that to them was replicable and commonplace? And so it wasn't much of a shock as it would be today, because it's not like we have that kind of thing in normal practice.

Exodus Miracles and Power Encounters

The supernatural aspect wouldn't have been as much of a shock. Like people back then believed in supernatural. The question is, which supernatural? Or what we would call supernatural. So like, you've got Pharaoh's magicians who, snake magic was a big thing in Egypt.

So yeah, you've got Pharaoh's magicians who can do certain things. But finally after, you know, by the time they get to Exodus chapter 8, they're saying, oh, this is the finger of God. They can't replicate.

And certainly they can't do it to the level of the God of Israel. You've got the same thing with Elijah and the prophets of Baal. You know, they fall down the fire from heaven. And you've got, you've got this in the book of Acts with Philip and Simon the sorcerer in Acts chapter 8, verses 9 to 11.

You've got Elemas Barjezes in Acts chapter 13. You've got the seven sons of Sceva in Acts chapter 19. You've got these other people trying to do these things, but they have to recognize that the true God's power is greater.

And so it's what missiologists or specialists in mission, they call power encounters, where God shows his power greater than that of magic. In the case of Jesus, he didn't have as many people trying to do magic so much in Judea or Galilee.

And so there people would have been more like, this must be a prophet or something like that.

Interesting. So if I were a first century Jew, like watching Jesus perform these miracles that were supernatural, I mean, even if you think about like Elijah calling down Baal, what question would I immediately be asking?

Would I be saying, is this possible? Or would I be like, which God is causing this? More like the latter. Oh, see, I think today that wouldn't even be a question that people would ask.

Well, yeah. People today seem to think monotheism is one God or less.

But anyway. And are you saying that like there's still monotheism, but just they believe in a different God?

Well, what I'm saying is that a lot of people today, they've screened out the supernatural. So, you know, they subtract all the polytheism, and then they get down to one God. And then maybe we don't even believe that the one God can do anything.

Yeah. It's just, we've kind of explained everything away. And God doesn't appreciate being explained away.

Why Jesus Healed Particular Afflictions

Well, I hope I don't commit heresy then, because I kind of want an explanation coming into this next section, is why these miracles. And, you know, in the planning process of this episode, I think you did something amazing where you made a distinction between the miracles of like healing the blind, and then, you know, like the blindness, the deafness, paralysis, leprosy, raising people from the dead.

And then there's other types of miracles, you know, we'll get into authority over chaos in the physical realm. But is there something beyond the surface level of bringing somebody from the dead or healing something like a sense, like their deafness or their blindness or, you know, physical ailment?

Why those? Why do you think Jesus is focusing on healing those over like, he's not going around curing chickenpox? He's not going around getting rid of headaches, you know? So why like those specifically?

Like, what are we missing here?

But the Bible does say that he was healing every kind of sickness. So he probably was healing some of the other stuff and malaria was pervasive. So Peter's mother-in-law is sick in bed with fever and so on.

But I think the Bible focuses on those incidents that are the most dramatic, because they're like, well, this isn't just like, sometimes a fever can go away, right? But this is something that blindness doesn't usually just, wow, I can see.

So these are more dramatic. But also there, some of these are directly related to signs of the kingdom. So when you look at John the Baptist sends messengers to Jesus and says, how do we know, are you the one to come or should we look for somebody else?

And he trusts Jesus is from God. But he said that the coming one is going to baptize in the Holy Spirit and fire. I don't see any fire. So I just, you know, you're healing a few sick people and so on.

How do I know what this is really, you know, if you're really the one to come? And Jesus's response is, go tell John what you've heard and seen. He appeals to eyewitness evidence and says, the blind see, the deaf hear, the disabled walk, and dot, dot, dot.

And good news is preached to the poor. Well, the parts that I quoted actually appear in Isaiah 35 verses 5 and 6, in Isaiah 61 .1. And these were passages that John would know. These were passages in Isaiah, the context of which is the promised time of restoration, the time of God's kingdom, the time when God would reign and challenge over all the earth.

God would heal and restore these things. And Jesus is saying to John, by quoting these texts, Jesus is saying, John, I haven't restored everything yet, but these are a foretaste of a promised coming kingdom.

They're not just random. And also notice that these are benevolent signs. Like, I mean, God is capable of doing judgments. You see that with the 10 plagues in Egypt. But the first plague in Egypt was water turned to blood.

John 2 says that the first sign in Jesus' ministry was water turned to wine. Last sign in Egypt, death of the firstborn. Last sign in the gospel of John, the raising of Lazarus, raising the dead. And so this is actually even a contrast with judgment signs in the sense that these show us God's benevolent heart.

God was showing us signs of the kingdom, a foretaste of the kingdom. I don't know if I'm heading this in the right direction you wanted me to go.

That was a crazy contrast, Greg. Oh my gosh, just the wine and the blood and the death and the life. See, this is why you're here. I would have never thought about that or made that connection. I do feel like blindness comes up an awful lot.

And like, maybe it's just the most dramatic miracle. I guess. I don't know. Maybe. Is there a reason that it comes up so often?

Physical and Spiritual Blindness in Mark

It is interesting. There's a section in Mark where Jesus heals blindness, and then he heals blindness of some other people later. And that whole section in between, Jesus is dealing with disciples who are half-blind spiritually.

So many scholars do see a connection there. Because Jesus, he says to the disciples when, you know, he's multiplied fish and loaves a couple times, and they're like, oh, we forgot to bring bread with us.

And Jesus is like, are you still blind? Do you still not see? Do you still not understand? He says it like five different ways. And then right after that, he heals a blind man in two stages. So the guy first sees people like trees walking, and then Jesus finishes it.

So it's like, you guys are still half-blind. You know to follow me, but you don't really understand my mission. Peter confesses, you're the Christ. And Jesus says, that's good. The Son of Man is going to suffer and die.

Peter says, no, no, that will never happen. Peter's still half-blind. He understands Jesus is the Messiah, but he doesn't understand that the Messiah's mission is to come and die. So yeah, there's a kind of spiritual blindness that Jesus has come to heal, as well as a physical blindness.

It made so much sense as soon as you said spiritual blindness. Because I'm so focused on the physical. Wow, it's just like a lot of blind people back in the day.

I mean, it was more common back then. They didn't have the kind of treatments we have today. Again, this context makes sense.

I just take it for granted. But you're right, the spiritual blindness and kind of what that represents. I think the same would say, go for deafness. At the same time, you're just not hearing. Wow.

And disability is like people would have injuries they couldn't get treated for.

Leprosy, Social Exclusion, and Faith

Is there another similar spiritual parallel when it comes to leprosy? Or is that more of like textual? That was just like a skin condition that was super common back then, and it was just an issue. Or was it something else?

Because I know that in Deuteronomy and Leviticus, I feel like there's a lot when it comes to skin conditions.

What is the background there? Yeah, in Numbers chapter 12, it's like compared to being dead. It's like really, but it's leprosy in the Bible is different than what we call leprosy today. Leprosy today is Hansen's disease.

Leprosy in the Bible actually didn't have to be as dramatic as Hansen's disease, like in India and some other places where you have a lot of what we call leprosy today. In the Bible, though, it could include that they've actually found, I think in a burial cave near Jerusalem, they actually found DNA that showed that the person who died had leprosy in the modern sense.

But it could include any kind of skin disease, serious skin disease. I used to have eczema under my left eye. I have eczema on my hand right now. Some of my students, don't get close, I have leprosy, in the biblical sense.

But it also had social consequences where people weren't allowed to touch them, get too close to them, and so on. Although it's interesting that the guy with biblical leprosy, Mark chapter 1, he's close enough to Jesus for Jesus to reach out and touch him, even though you're supposed to stay like 50 paces apart.

You're supposed to be crying out, according to Leviticus 13, don't get close to me, I have leprosy. I'm clean, I'm clean. But he gets that close. It's like you've got so many people in the gospel of Mark who are so desperate that they violate all sorts of social protocols to get to Jesus.

They'll tear up their neighbor's roof to let their friend down. The woman with the flow of blood, Leviticus 15, she's not supposed to touch anybody. She reaches out and touches the hem of Jesus' garment.

They're so desperate, they realize Jesus is the only answer, and they won't settle for not getting close to Jesus. Yeah, and the New Testament calls that faith.

Resurrection Miracles and the Promise of New Life

Well, I think that there's so much faith when it comes to, I would say, the most extreme miracle is raising people from the dead. And I think that's a foreshadow for what happens to Jesus, obviously, spoiler alert.

But when it comes to the miracles that Jesus was participating in, and we see it in the Old Testament with Elijah and the woman's child that he raises back from the dead after laying on him, is that all—should we take it more than a foreshadow to Jesus' resurrection, or is there something else?

Obviously, it's benefiting the people, but yeah, it is also foreshadowing Jesus' resurrection and consequently our resurrection. It's a form of healing in a sense. I mean, the longest you have anybody dead before they're raised is Lazarus for four days.

So you don't have anybody like completely rot out of the way or something like that. I mean, so it's not magic tricks, but yeah, it expresses God's power and it expresses God's care. And there was a Jewish prayer at that time praising God for his power and that he's going to raise the dead.

And that'll be like even those who are completely gone, you know, the dry bones, Ezekiel 37, 1 to 14. I'm digressing too much. I'm ADHD. I'm sorry. I jump all over the place, but you're helping me. You're giving me an outline, so.

I also have ADHD, which is why we have notes. And it's so funny. I just saw something silly online, but ADHD just stands for a diva has distractions. And so you and I, Craig, have distractions. You keep mentioning Old Testament, and I think it is notable what Exodus shows in just how much God they experienced and how clearly God was talking to them.

The manna from heaven, you know, we'll get into more physical miracles. How would a Jewish audience connect Jesus of the New Testament to the miracles of Exodus in the Old Testament?

Jesus as the New Moses and the New Exodus

Yeah. Even the language of signs and wonders, not exclusively, but most often in the Old Testament, that applies back to the time of the Exodus. So there are certain periods where God displays himself most dramatically in history.

And you also have it with Elijah and Elisha. So a lot of Jesus' miracles evoked those of Elijah and Elisha, but also those of Moses. And that's significant because there were a lot of people who were expecting, well, the prophets, Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah, you know, and so on.

Micah, they prophesied a new Exodus. God will lead his people through the wilderness, bring them back to the land of promise. And people were looking forward to that. Deuteronomy 18, 15 through 18, Moses said, God will raise up a prophet like me.

So people were expecting a new Moses. You have that in the Dead Sea Scrolls. You have that in, you know, the Samaritans were expecting that. You have it throughout ancient Jewish literature. And it's interesting, you have a couple people in the first century claiming to be prophets and getting people to follow them in the wilderness.

One of them said he was going to make the walls of Jerusalem fall down, like Joshua did with Jericho. One of them said he was going to make the River Jordan part. You know, so they're trying to be like a new Moses.

They failed. But Jesus, like Moses, multiplied food in the wilderness. Jesus, sort of like Moses, on a mountain, glows with glory. The difference being that Moses glowed after he saw God's glory, whereas in the case of Mark 9, Matthew 17, and Luke 9, Jesus is the source of the glory.

So Jesus isn't just like a new Moses. Jesus is like the God whose glory Moses saw. But you have these connections where Jesus is the one who's, you know, in light of the Old Testament, people were expecting a new Moses.

They were expecting a God to come, lead his people back to the promised land. They were expecting a Davidic Messiah. They were expecting a Danielic son of man, Daniel 7. But surprise, surprise. When Jesus came, we found out these were all the same person.

Well, I could absolutely see, you know, you have Moses. It's kind of like, who you know, who you like. It's your history. You're following Mosaic law. And then, you know, the line of David. You see who David is.

You expect something similar. And then you think of the miracles back in Exodus. You know, the water flowing from the rock. And, you know, just all of Mount Sinai and the manna from heaven and, you know, the burning bush and kind of the pillars of fire.

What do we miss when we compare Jesus to that? Because obviously none of that was happening in the New Testament. But there are all of these allusions to Moses when it comes to Jesus. Yeah. And do those still exist today?

Miracles in Acts and the Present Day

You know, it feels like there was like a lot, and then it got a little bit less with Jesus. And now it's like, we barely see that today. Like it almost like tapers off. Or am I just blind? You know, do I have a spiritual blindness that I'm completely missing here?

It's okay. You could say, you could be nice.

I'll take the feedback. And different times and places, God does it differently. But it is, the tapering off, I'm not sure. But sometimes people say it tapers off in the book of Acts. But that's because, I mean, you don't expect Paul to be doing signs and wonders when he's under house arrest.

You know, he's not out with a lot of people. But, you know, on the island of Malta, in Acts chapter 27, you still got the signs and wonders. It does taper off in the sense that I think, well, I get the impression at least, everybody Jesus prayed for gets healed.

Maybe prayed for isn't the right way. Usually he just heals them. But in the book of Acts, you know, we get the highlight reel, obviously. But in Paul's letters, we see that presumably some of the people Paul prayed for didn't get healed.

So it's not like everyone, like Trophimus, I left at Malate is sick. Paul speaks of because of a bodily illness. He preached the gospel among Galatians 4. The other one was 2 Timothy 4. Epaphroditus was sick close to the point of death.

But God had mercy on him, Philippians 2. So it seems like God would often heal to get people's attention for the gospel. But it wasn't like necessarily always. And I think that's true today as well, that we see God still doing things for the honor of his name.

I have one friend from Nigeria. When I asked him when I was writing my first book of miracles, I said, have you seen any? He said, well, not very many. He sent me seven pages. But one of them was of a time when he was doing research in a village and neighbors brought their child to him who was dead and said, you're a man of God.

Can you do anything? Took the child aside for a couple hours, prayed, handed the child back to them alive. And I said, have you ever seen that before? Have you ever prayed for anybody else who was dead?

I thought maybe he just prays for everybody who's dead and gets lucky once in a while. But he said, no, I've only ever once prayed for somebody who was dead before. And that was my best friend. And he didn't come back.

So sometimes God does things for his honor. I mean, we have the hope of eternal life. We're set either way. But sometimes God does things for his honor in a special way, to get people's attention in a special way for the gospel.

But that doesn't mean it always happens. It's like Jesus said to John the Baptist, this is a foretaste of the kingdom. There's going to be a day when God's going to wipe away every tear from our eyes.

There's going to be no more sickness or death. But in the meantime, he gives us these signs as reminders of his promise of a world.
