The Freshness of Scripture and the Need for Spiritual Understanding

A long while on a message on Malachi 3. And then this good brother came in this morning and preached on it. Did a better job than I would do, so I left that round. And then I thought tonight we might finish the meeting by singing, when the trumpet of the Lord shall sound.

And this little Syrian stole that. So I'm starting off with two flat tires this tonight. One of the wonders of the Word of God is its perennial freshness. You can read the text, it doesn't do much for you, and the next time you read it, it seems to jump off the page and grab you by the throat and demand all your attention.

And I was reading today in, I'm not going to speak on it, but in the first chapter there of the Acts of the Apostles, where it says that even after he had risen from the dead, Jesus took the disciples on one side and for forty days he taught them.

We don't have any of his notes, I wish we had. We don't know a thing that he taught them. But even after he taught them and after his life of miracles, and after everything he'd done, they were still ignorant and they were still asking, are you going to launch the kingdom and are you going to restore us again in power in Israel?

And I guess in our modern language we would say that Jesus didn't get through to them. Somehow there was a blockage in their thinking and their understanding. And I think that this is very often true in our own lives.

I think a lot of the blame has to be placed on preachers, ministers, teachers, evangelists, and what have you got. Because sometimes I think we offer too much for too little. I think sometimes we try and give people a package deal and say, now you just come here, receive the Holy Ghost, that takes care of everything.

And it certainly does not. Because Peter was filled with the Holy Ghost, there's no question about that. His heart was cleansed by the blood, but his head was cleansed by the rod. He'd received a pure heart according to Acts 15, 8 and 9, but he couldn't think straight, because when the Lord let down in his presence a sheep with a lot of unseen things, he said, not me, I'm not touching that.

I was pure, he was still with the Holy Ghost, but he wasn't straight in his thinking. A little later down the road he had more trouble. And I was looking today and suggest it to you, because I'm not even going to try to preach tonight, but just pass on some thoughts, particularly to young people.

Being Filled Again and Again With the Holy Spirit

It's an interesting thing to read how many times in the Acts of the Apostles it talks about being filled. And sometimes I say to young people, can you fill what's filled? And they would of course say, no you can't fill a thing that's full, and of course you can.

You can fill a thing that's full six or seven times, without increasing it in any way, but you'll fill it. And we're told in the Acts of the Apostles they were all filled with the Holy Ghost in chapter 2 and then chapter 5.

You remember the question is put there, why has Satan filled our hearts alive to the Holy Ghost? And then we get a little bit further in the third chapter actually. It says, after the man ran down the aisle like these noisy, noisy Baptists.

Good night, there is noisy Sunday castles tonight. And this man ran through the aisle of the church leaping and praising God, and that just ain't done in decent places you know. But he did it anyhow, he was healed and he was blessed, and it says they were all amazed.

We don't get that in our churches, we're just all amused, but they were all amazed. And it says they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they were all amazed. Then it says they were all filled with wonder.

Then later in the chapter, in the epistle it says they were all filled with joy. You know so often we snatch at, now everybody trying to illustrate the wonder of being filled with the Spirit, takes hold of Peter and his back's gridden.

Oh they run poor Peter down to the ground don't they. You know Peter couldn't keep his eyes on the Lord, couldn't even walk on the water, and he fell down and made a real bad job of it. But nobody gives him credit for walking back to the boat, Jesus didn't carry him back.

At least his faith had got repaired enough to get up and walk on the water back, so before you start arguing with him, you better walk back, he did the same right because Jesus touched him, that's why he did it.

You know if the Lord really holds your hand, you can go anywhere, almost do anything. The classic example of a spiritual believer is Peter, as great as he was. Now I want to talk about him in a little while, to again help young people, but I think of that young man, that young man Stephen is a classic example.

Now I don't know how old he was, but my guess is that he was maybe under 20 years of age. And he was a very remarkable young man, he was filled with the Holy Ghost. But he was not only filled with the Holy Ghost, he was filled with wisdom, and he was filled with power.

And all those learned men couldn't even stand up to the power of the Spirit of God that was within him. He was full of faith, he was full of the Holy Ghost, he was full of wisdom, he was full of meekness, he was filled with joy.

Now again I say you can fill what call that is full. For instance, simply you could take a glass of water and fill it right to the brim, and I said to you, now that's full, can I fill it without emptying it?

And you might logically say, well of course not, well of course yes you can. Well how could you fill it without extracting what's in it and putting something else in it? Well all you have to do is take that glass of water, leave it there filled to the brim, and drop one simple drop of what?

Well coloring in it, dye, and immediately you'll see it now. It was full of water, now you fill it with color. You know this rigmarole you have heard in America, that we crack jokes about, but you make tea.

We were in a restaurant, we had a bare-morbid tea, and the lady said, hot tea? Well sure, we always throw cold tea away in England, but anyhow, in America you drink it, and you get a tea bag, and you put the tea in, and you know the argument, then you put some sugar, some lemon in to make it sour, and you put some sugar in to make it sweet, and and you stir it up, and you make it hot.

You make it hot first of course to get it, then when you've got it nice and hot, you put ice cubes in to make it cold, and then you put again lemon in to make it bitter, and then you put sugar in to make it sweet, and then you say, here's how to you, and drink it yourself.

That's ridiculous. But uh, you can fill a thing that's full. For instance, you could take this room as an example. Uh, right now it's full of light. Number one, it's full of air, otherwise you couldn't breathe.

Two minutes ago it was full of praise, and you might say it's full of people, and someone might come along with perfume, and you say, hmm that's nice, and the room is filled with perfume, and you might have to put up the temperature, and you can fill it with heat.

Now it's filled with heat, and it's filled with light, and it's filled with people, and it's filled with sound, and it's filled with perfume, and there's no confusion, they all blend perfectly. And you see lots of people come to the altar, and when they don't, suddenly they become dramatically changed, and wake up in the morning and say, goodness what's this, and say, oh it's my halo.

Uh, or uh, they turn over in bed, and say, by this is uncomfortable, what's this, and you might say, oh it's your wings darling, they start expanding after all. There's nothing dramatic about the change, the coming of the spirit, it won't change the color of your eyes, it will change, you change your disposition.

God’s Work of Making Vessels Unto Honor

And in the many things that I've seen in many parts of the world, I've watched people weaving these very expensive carpets. I've been in a gold mine, I've been in a coal mine, I've um, been in a submarine, I've been in an aircraft, five, six, seven, eight miles up, five, six miles up in the air.

I've been in many places, and I didn't like them all, but I've uh, enjoyed some. But the most fascinating thing that I have ever seen, is a potter taking a piece of shapeless, sticky clay, that has no character, and weaving out of it.

So that's what he does, he spins the thing, and he weaves out of that shapeless clay, uh, what one famous man called, a thing of beauty which is a joy forever. And yet the great work of God himself, is to take the shapeless clay of our human personality, and cleanse it, and refine it, and make it a vessel unto honour.

That's a wonderful chapter that Paul has, making vessels unto honour. And as I said this morning, if a man really finds his way of all, a man's gift will make room for him. If you have a gift of God, whether an evangelist, a teacher, a singer, or something else, if you're in the will of God, now you'll have tests, there's no question about that.

But I don't think you'll ever have to stand with your hat off. Now there are times of course, when, when folks will throw you out, and as I said last night, if some of you preachers preach what you know to preach, you'll be thrown out of the synagogue, but you won't do it, you're scared stiff.

But there are times when the Lord will test us, he tested everybody, he tested his own son, he did not spare his only begotten son, what makes you think he'll spare you? And let's remember this, that God's greatest concern isn't over a lost world, I don't believe it is.

God's greatest concern is to get the consummate glory for his only begotten son, however he gets it. Not just to redeem us, not to sanctify us, his purpose is again to get maximum praise and glory to his own son.

Because only the Father understood the cost of human redemption. The redemptive work of God in Christ could only be assessed by God himself, the God of infinite knowledge and the God of infinite power.

Trust, Obedience, and the Cost of Discipleship

But I confess too that I am fascinated with the, with the life of Peter. I'm sure that the structure, whatever height of spirituality you and I may come to eventually, depends just on one simple thing.

My old granny used to sit in the chimney corner in England and rock in a rocking chair, and I think she only knew two hymns that she'd memorized, one was Take Time to be Holy, that we sang this morning, and the other was Trust and Obey, There's No Other Way.

And if you read 50 ,000 books on theology, and you'll get a headache out of every one, you still have to come back to this simple philosophy, Trust and Obey, There's No Other Way. You can't get round it, or over it, or under it.

God has placed it there, Trust and Obey, There's No Other Way. Isn't it amazing how God called man? Here is a man filling out an income tax form, he's very busy filling in this thing, and suddenly a shadow falls over the ledger, and he looks up into the most amazing face in history, and the man just says to him, follow me.

And immediately he dropped his pen, he didn't even finish making the contract, and he followed him. Would you? Would you follow a man that you've never seen before, and maybe you've never heard before?

Would you give up a government job with a chance of a pension? Would you say to your father, dad I'm going out of business, you can give my stocks to the, to the others, but I'm going to follow this man.

Nobody knew anything about him, and yet look eventually where Peter, where Matthew landed, and where the others landed. And it wasn't really obedience there, and it's true, but it says a little later there in the Acts of the Apostles, he gives the Holy Spirit to them to obey him.

But not just because of that obedience, but because of being a sequence of obedience. I only know one way to grow in grace, or how to develop you youngsters and others in the Christian life. And it says that the Christian life is a process which precipitates you into a crisis, which is followed again by a process, which leads you to a crisis, which is followed by a process.

Life is just made up of that in the Christian life. You say I want to walk nearer to God than anybody else, then you carry a bigger cross than anybody else. You'll have a greater vision than anybody else.

You'll know more brokenness than anybody else. You'll know, and this is the hardest of all, you'll know more loneliness than anybody else. You see, God isn't promiscuous with his giving. And I suggest to you young people again that you read something a little more profound and Christy.

Why not read the new issue of the Life of David Brainerd as written by prospective father-in-law. Read it and get down to business. And read A Good Life of Wesley, read A Good Life of George Fox, the founder of the Quakers.

And you'll discover in nearly every one of these lives that these men outlined 10 commandments for themselves, or sometimes 20. And they didn't do it excitedly in emotion, they didn't totally, if you like, in the place of prayer.

And then they posted it on the wall in a bedroom or somewhere. These are the laws of my life. Now Wesley didn't copy somebody else. He found out what God wanted him, but he stayed by those things. Better not vow than make vows and so forth to fulfill those vows.

And you'll of course be tempted to say, well that guy isn't doing it anyway. And the Lord says, what is that to thee? Follow thou me. We say sometimes, well you know, I'm not dispositionally that way.

You see, somebody said to a preacher one day, which character do you like the best, Mary or Martha? And he's a pretty smart fellow. He said, I like Martha before lunch and Mary after. Well that's one way to get out of it, but we say, you see, where's Martha's disposition, active and serving?

And where is Mary? She was born that way. She wasn't born that way, she chose the better path. And we do not emphasize enough the human will in discipleship. You've got the will to do God's will. As Edwin Hatch said many years ago in this marvelous hymn, Edwin Hatch had no problems about money, no problems about a crowd.

He had what the world, what even Christians call success. But one day he said, there's no lingering atmosphere. The atmosphere is an instinct with deity. And he got alone and began to pray. And right out, voluntarily, he just prayed this, breathe on me breath of God.

And as soon as he said it, he snatched a piece of paper and a pen, and he wrote on him right through without a stop, breathe on me breath of God, fill me with life anew. And later he said, breathe on me breath of God, till I am holy thine.

Breathe on me breath of God, until with thee I will one will. Two streams coming down the side of a mountain and suddenly they become one and you can't tell the one from the other. That's how our will has to be lost in his.

Remember the old hymn, the sweet will of God, still fall me closer. Now I've heard congregations in England, when we've had thousands at conferences sing that, and get bursting into praise, and running their hours, and shouting hallelujahs to marvelous old hymns.

You see the human will, until with thee I will one will. You've got to make up your mind you're going to be a disciple. You've got to make up your mind you'll carry a cross. You've got to make up your mind you'll pray when others go pray.

You've got to make your mind you won't sacrifice when other people make indulgences. As I said the other morning, nobody has yet dared to define how much of the responsibility for our spiritual, how much of the responsibility for our spiritual development depends on God, and how much depends on me?

You say it's all in sovereign grace. I don't believe it for a minute. Otherwise you'd charge God with bankruptcy in his church today, and all those spiritual cripples being around. Some of us have failed to follow the revelation that God has given to us.

We've back down somewhere. I have to make up my will, I'm going to follow thee, I'll follow thee. It's never easy, because there are constant challenges. Now I like the epistle to Peter, and I think it to me it's more practical and helpful even than the epistle of James, and I like the very word as you start reading the epistle, Peter an apostle of Jesus Christ.

My, that's interesting isn't it? Peter made it, made it that he called him even an apostle, and he wrote this epistle. Keep that clear in your mind, an epistle is not the wife of an apostle, it's something written by an apostle, and Peter wrote this marvelous epistle, Peter an apostle of Jesus Christ.

Peter’s Transformation Through Pressure and Trial

It's an interesting thing if you youngsters haven't done it. You take a grain of sand and get a good magnifying glass and look at it, and you'll find it's got peaks on it and cavities. Now you can't do much with sand, the wind can blow it away, you can't make a building out of it, but if you put that sand under pressure, those cavities will fit in, those peaks will fit into those cavities, and it nips together, and then you can build a building.

I used to live in the city of Bath in England, and there's an abbey there, the foundation was laid in 444, and then they rebuilt the abbey, and it's more than, I don't know what it is now, how many, maybe a thousand years old or something.

A beautiful old place, and it looks as though it was only built fairly recently. Why? Because it's of this durable stone. Now sand, it would have blown away. When Jesus found Peter, he wasn't Peter. Who was he?

Simon. And the name Simon means shifty and irresponsible and undependable. Thou art Simon, thou shalt be. Oh, it was a long process. Again, every vessel unto honour, whether it was a greasy thing there in the back of the kitchen, or it was a beautiful dish that's brought and presented before a king, or some delicacy in it, every one of those vessels somewhere had to be taken out of its raw nature and purified and put in a furnace before ever.

It could be acceptable, even if it was a clay vessel. And there's no escaping it. You and I are going to go through the furnace, and you better face up to it. There was a man here last year. Was it last year when you were here, or earlier this year?

I think earlier this year. A brother McGee, wasn't he, Dr. McGee, who said one afternoon here, and everybody's hair stood straight up nearly. But he said that they've already built concentration camps in the tundra there in Canada, built by Rockefeller millions and Standard Oil millions.

And before long, if you don't bow to the state in America, you'll be shipped off there. Now I didn't say that, he said that. Now you say, it would never come to our, my country teaches the, and God's been very good.

I think God's very angry with America tonight, and I think he's very angry with England. And I don't see any reason why you and I should live in a country that violates every law God ever made, and legalizes prostitution, and legalizes abortion, and has a high court that legalizes crime, and does every devilish thing it could, while other Christians in Russia and other Christians in China are in prison tonight.

You see, all God is asking your life is to conform you to the image of his Son. And if you don't want to be conformed to the image, well don't pray any real serious prayers. Just say, Lord bless me and my wife, I've done and his wife has for and no more.

But if you really mean business with God, then challenge God, because if you do, he's sure to lead you, and better, you'll go through the phoenix somewhere. He's only be gotten funded. None of the ransomed ever knew how deep were the water's cost, and you'll find the same thing in the case of Peter.

Thou art Simon, fifty, irresponsible, thou shalt be Peter. And when we were up north a couple of years ago, somebody gave me a nice piece of petrified wood. Well if you change your actions on that, this man said to me by the way, he said, you know, maybe a million years ago, his guess, you could take that wood and break it, break it off with your finger nail.

Try it now. Well I tried it, and of course it was, it was as hard as the concrete. What had happened? It was petrified. Or, change the action, it was petrified. And the Lord says, you're Simon, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're not trustworthy, you're not dependable, you're vacillating, you're uncertain.

Oh Lord, as everybody says, I'll die. Oh man, you don't know what you're made of yet. Too enough after Pentecost, then you became as durable as a rock. Steadfast and unmovable and always a diamond in the love of God.

Then you'll see the finished work. Now I, I can listen to a man who is more than a philosopher. And I don't care how eloquently you preach, or how profoundly you seem to expose, you may be the best exegete in the world, and you may preach sermons of homiletical perfection and exegetical exactitude, but what you've all done, I'll turn up my nose, is it is an experience, because you're only a philosopher.

Nothing is real until it becomes experience. More than once I've had to bury a, a, a, a young husband, or I buried a young wife. And I said to the, to the, to the heartbroken young man there, I said, look I, I, I want to tell you something, I'm telling you that God can give you comfort, I'm quoting scriptures, but I've never passed this way.

I don't know. I can tell you a dozen people who have passed this way, but for myself, it's still a philosophy with me. I believe God would give me the required grace, but so far I haven't passed this way.

I mean what's the good of reading a book, I'm, some of you young fellows, supposing our good song leader now, if you were here next week, he's taking a job as a marriage counselor. Well I don't think he'd take much notice, he's a single man.

You don't take much notice of a person who is a single person, being a marriage counselor, really it's a philosophy. But somebody who knows and experienced and is mature in this, you listen to them. Now that's why I can listen with real, I hope, understanding to Peter.

Peter an apostle of Jesus Christ, writing to the saints that are scattered abroad in Pontus and Galatia and elsewhere, and right down to us in this very time in which we live. And he says, blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

I find the most exciting things after the Acts of the Apostles really, because of course the message again in the Acts of the Apostles was not the message of a Christ crucified, but a message of a Christ risen from the dead, exalted in all power and all authority.

And there's nothing more exciting to me if the weather gets rough and the situation looks dark, and I've heard about this and that and the other in the church right side of it, to realize again that Jesus Christ has pledged the final triumph of his church.

The world isn't going to end with a bang and a whimper, it's not going to end with the whole world being dominated by communism, it's going to be ended by Jesus Christ ruling the world. His kingdom is going to stretch from shore to shore, the kingdoms of this world, to become the kingdoms of our God and of his Christ.

It seems to me that we need to rediscover again the wonder of the risen Christ of God, that God has with him freely given us all things. There is not one thing that God has overlooked, and the powers of darkness had better look out, because I'm absolutely certain that God is going to do a new thing in the last days in which we are living.

I'm persuaded in my own mind that he's going to bypass what we call organized religion and big denominations. They've had their chance, they've run for years, they've missed the bus, and God is going to raise up men, he's going to raise up prophets.

They're going to see the most wonderful things that the world has ever seen, I'm quite sure of this. We may go through a tribulation before it, but brother, God's going to exalt his name, God is going to triumph.

I say again as I said other nights, I believe the Church of Jesus Christ, as we know it tonight, is an embarrassment to God. Jesus died for something more magnificent, more triumphant, more victorious, more lively than the thing we have.

He got us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. And this is what we have. We have an inheritance, incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away. Now there's a lot of stuff to think of, isn't there?

An inheritance incorruptible, beyond the reach of death, undefiled, beyond the reach of sin. That fadeth not away, beyond the reach of death. That's my inheritance. We've only reached a mere little tasting bit of it even now.

Oh sure, the old hymn says, the whole of Zion yields a thousand sacred sweets before we reach the heavenly fields or walk the golden streets. But brother, when we get there, what's it going to be like?

We've got an inheritance incorruptible. Nothing will ever rot it or decay it, it's incorruptible. It's beyond the reach of death, it's beyond the reach of sin, it's beyond the reach of time, it fadeth not away.

And this is what it says, it's reserved in heaven for you who are kept by the power of God. Isn't that nice? Reserved in heaven. When we lived in Ireland in an old 300 year old house, and across the fields from our house is a very lovely castle.

A young man lived in it, about 35 years of age, a young lord, an aristocrat. And when the Queen of England was crowned in what, 1952, he and his wife went to the coronation. And after that I went into his library, nearly as large as this room, magnificent library.

Oh it had some very wonderful things, these castles have, but there in the center were two chairs, and woven in the back of each chair was the royal sign, the royal crest, and beautiful letters ER, Elizabeth Rex, Elizabeth Reigns.

And then tagged on the corner, there was the name of this lord, I've forgotten his name for the moment. But there was his name, and then on the other chair, there was the name of his wife, the title of his wife, Lord Delmore.

Lord Delmore on this chair, Lady Delmore on the other. There wasn't enough room in that wonderful building that we call Westminster Abbey to get the crowd. And so they filled the aisles with chairs, and those who sat on those chairs were privileged to buy them.

The very day the Queen was crowned, I happened to fly into Chicago, and a lady came to me, and I mean in the home, and I went for supper, and she said, you know, we've had a wonderful day, we've been to England three times.

I said, how did you do it? She said, well, we've been by television, and we've seen your Queen crowned. And she's going to be crowned again tonight at 10 o 'clock, we want you to see the Queen crowned.

Now Westminster Abbey has been redecorated since then, they've repainted it, they've put millions of dollars of work and worth in it, I don't know why, and they've overlaid it with gold. And if they did it now, with a coloured camera, it would really be something.

The kings of the earth, the mummocks of the lake, oh, what a pageant, pomp and circumstance, the thing was dripping, it was oozing. And that great carriage drawn by six almost beautiful white horses, and all the other kings and lords and ladies following, and a great show on that massive organ, and then the Queen, robed, sceptered, having a crown, changing the crown, giving it a scarf, giving it a something else, putting an orb in her hand with a cross on to remind her that Jesus reigns over the world.

And then when she's gone through all the palaver, they betrothed her, took off her royal apparel, took away the jewels, took away the crown, put a peasant's garment on her, and knelt in front of her and gave her a Bible, and said, this is the greatest treasure that earth affords.

I thought that was very nice, I hope they always do that. Keep it there in front of people. But this lady said to me, if you'd been in England, would you have been at the coronation today? And I said, no, my name's Ravenhill, not Churchill.

And so I don't think I would have gotten in. I could have gone to the door and said, and the guard said, you know that big fellow with his long boots on and his croon helmet, and it's good, where are you going?

I want to see the Queen's crown. What's your name? Ravenhill. Let me look in the social register. Oh no, there's a Lord Ravencroft, and there's a Lord Ravendale, but Ravenhill. No Ravenhill. No, sir, you can't go in.

I'm coming in a minute. You see, you see there? And look down there, you see every one of these 3 ,300 seats here, they're reserve seats. And if you got in, well, you couldn't get a seat because every seat is reserved, it has a name on it.

And so he said, Mr. Ravenhill, don't you feel rather unhappy that you couldn't go to the coronation? I said, ladies, I'm going to a coronation soon that will make that coronation look like the dirty dishes in the kitchen sink.

The Resurrection and the Coming Coronation of Christ

End of coronation, everybody from Adam, the first person, because everyone who is in the grave is going to hear the voice of the Son of God. When they got excited that he raised somebody from the dead, Jesus says, hold it.

We say, cool it, cool it, boys. You think it's wonderful that I've raised a number? I'm going to raise everybody that ever lived from Adam to the last being that died just before the trumpet sounded. All the millions, like the stars of heaven from altitude, the people that build the pyramids, the Maharajas of India, and the Caliphs of Baghdad, and the kings of England, and the Zoroastrians, and the voluptuous kings of France, and all the monarchs, because it says there in the book of the Revelation, doesn't it, I saw the small and the great stand before God.

Oh brother, that thing that wrinkled your brow today, that disappointment in the church that nearly crushed you, that thing that you thought would never come, you won't even think of it in that day. As the hymn writer says, it will be worth it all when we see Jesus.

Life's size will seem so small when we see Christ. One glimpse of his dear face, all sorrow will erase, and it will be worth it all when we see Jesus. That's what it says in the Revelation, they shall see his face.

Oh, what did Isaac Watts have said, the head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory. I can hardly wait to see that. Oh, I'm longing to see Hitler bow to me and say, Jesus Christ, you're the very son of God.

I'm going to see big fat Mussolini stagger and sway and say, you are the Christ, the son of the living God. I'm going to see every king, and every ruler, every man, every woman, black or white, those will build a pyramid.

The Hittites, the Magmalekites, and Perizzites, and Baptists, and all the others that you find down there. That's going to be something, isn't it? Don't you feel ashamed when you get under the weather sometimes, when you think, oh, what a foretaste of glory divine.

A little girl in England went into a store, and the man said, I'll better serve you, you're restless, what do you want? And she said, I want some, I want some glory divine. And he said, you want what?
