Good afternoon, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and the rest of humanity living on the planet Earth, who are listening via live streaming at ironsharpensironradio .com. This is Chris Arnzen, your host of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, wishing you all a happy Tuesday on this seventh day of July 2026, and I'm absolutely thrilled to have two first-time guests on the program today.

Although this great hero from Christian history has been mentioned on the program, I don't think that I've ever conducted a full two-hour interview on the life and works of William Tyndale. And we have, for the very first time, to discuss this great man of history, the Honorable Thomas E. Martin Jr., J .D., a practicing lawyer for 50 years, a magisterial judge for 17 years, a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, and a board member and the regional representative for the USA for the Tyndale Society, where he also serves as a speaker and historical presenter.

And before I introduce my second guest, welcome for the very first time to Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, Tom Martin. Thank you, Chris. Good to be here. And we also have joining us for the very first time Dr. Marilyn Button.

And Dr. Marilyn Button is professor of languages and literature, and she's also the chair of the Department of Languages and Literature at Lincoln University here in Pennsylvania, and she's the chair of the Tyndale Society USA.

It's my honor and privilege to welcome you also for the very first time, Dr. Marilyn Button. Thank you, Chris. It's great to be here. Well, first of all, since you're the chair of the…. No, I'm not the chair.

I'm not the chair. I was the chair for 15 years, and it's a rotating position, but I'm very excited about the work that the chair is doing.

You're referring to Lincoln University, but you are the chair of the Tyndale Society. Right.

Well, that's what I was going to mention. Okay. Sorry. That's quite right. Since you are the chair of the Tyndale Society USA, perhaps it would be best if you were to give our listeners a summary of what this organization is all about, and perhaps even when it came to be in existence.

Well, the Tyndale Society came into existence in about 1998, I believe, when it became…. Well, Tom's going to talk more about this, but the Tyndale Society, so I'm going to talk about what it is. It's a community of scholars who are thrilled with the impact of William Tyndale and his work, its impact on the English language, on world culture, on all manner of disciplines.

I can talk more about that later, but we promote scholarship and we promote community. Great.

Yes. The Tyndale .org has a marvelous drop-down menu that illustrates the ways that the Tyndale Society reaches out to a wide variety of people, and we commend it to your attention.

Well, we have a history here, a tradition here on Iron Troupe and Zion Radio. Whenever we have first-time guests, we have those gifts. Guests give a brief summary of their salvation testimonies, which would include the kind of religious atmosphere in which they were raised, if any, and what kind of providential circumstances our Sovereign Lord rose up in their lives that drew them to himself and saved them.

And let's start with you, Tom Martin.

Well, I don't remember exactly when I was converted. I was raised in a Christian home, blessed by having a father and mother who loved the Lord and who always involved me and my sister in church activities.

I was talking with Marilyn before the program and remembering how, when I was about 10 years of age, I was at an evangelistic meeting, and a counselor pointed my attention to 1 John 1 which says, if we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

And I think it was then that I first had assurance of my salvation. And a little incident that happened at my local elementary school thereafter, we had little cliques that we called gangs, but they weren't like gangs today.

And there was a leader, and I remember clearly someone started to tell what obviously was a dirty story. I didn't know what a dirty story was at the time, but everybody was kind of being quiet and hushed tones and so forth.

And I knew it was something I didn't want to hear. So I got up and left, and that took a great deal of courage for a 10-year-old. So I kind of remember that as kind of a change in my life when, even though I'd been raised in a Christian home, I really took a stand for something that I thought was the right thing to do.

Praise God. And now, Marilyn Button, please let our listeners know a bit about your salvation testimony.

Well, I was raised by two members of the Greatest Generation. My father was in the intelligence service in World War II and was stationed in London where he met my mother. And so they raised us in a Christian home.

We didn't talk much about religion, but we had little cards where we read a verse of I always remember that. We called it Bible roulette. But that took a more meaningful form when my father was stationed later on in his career in Paris with the Foreign Service, where he served with the ambassador to NATO.

But anyway, my mother was a singer on the British stage, and my father was a pianist in addition to his professional career. And in Paris, they would take us to various events, such as Judy Garland and Maurice Chevalier and the Beatles.

I remember the Beatles screaming, and I couldn't imagine what they were screaming. But they also took us to a Billy Graham crusade in 1962. And I was very moved at that event, and I went forward and I got all the literature and I gave my life to Christ, technically, at that time.

And I did all that literature that he had in French, which was a wonderful blessing because it kind of solidified it in more than one ways. Well, that was a head knowledge. And then I went to college, and I skipped a grade when I was in high school, and so I was kind of a nerd.

And so I spent most of my time in college at Tufts University with a Christian fellowship. But the most important thing I can say about that is that I read the Bible. I read the Bible incessantly, and I knew it backwards and forwards.

And I'm so grateful for that foundation because I would never have gotten through life without knowing, having a personal relationship with the Lord, and having His Word be the foundation. And as a follow-up to that, at Lincoln University, I have a Bible study that I do with kids, and I call it Foundations because I want so much for the next generation to have the kind of foundation that I have had in the Word.

Wow. Let me ask, do you have any negative feedback for doing that? I'm assuming, and perhaps I'm wrong, that Lincoln University is a secular college?

Lincoln University is a state-related institution, but I'm very, very proud to say that it still holds the banner from the Gospel of John, and the words are right outside the president's office. And I was sharing that with Tom also.

If the Son will make you free, you will be free indeed. I am very, very encouraged at the Christian presence on campus. There are many people who work there who are Christians. The pastor is always serving the kids.

And when we do publications or when we do special events, they're always done to the glory of God and the legacy of Lincoln. And so the tradition of freedom at Lincoln is extraordinary. I don't want to go on too much about this, but I've always been forced to think deeply about what it means to be free.

And, of course, the school doesn't tout that line of thought. Your question was, has it been difficult, I think? What was your question exactly?

Have you had any negative feedback for doing something like that in this day and age? You know, the left always looks for every opportunity to attack Christians for publicly demonstrating their faith.

And I was just curious if there was any negative feedback for what you were doing, holding Bible studies.

Well, the Bible study actually took real shape on Zoom. We really got going then. I could talk a lot more about that. Not overtly, no. I think that when a Christian does good work, people are thankful.

We in this community are very proud of Lincoln. Lincoln is the oldest degree-granting historically black college or university in the United States. It was founded in 1856 by a Presbyterian minister in the area.

And then after President Lincoln was assassinated, the name was changed. It's a great institution, and I've served there also as an adjunct professor of pre-law. So we have a love for Lincoln. We've had several conferences there in the past few years, since after the COVID pandemic, the Tyndale Society has become kind of revived.

Lincoln also has been an opportunity to integrate the scriptures into the study of literature. The man who started the Tyndale Society was a scholar by the name of David Daniel, who says in the book we brought with us, the book indicates that the person who doesn't have the scriptures, who hasn't read the scripture, is at a deficit in the study of English literature.

And I couldn't agree more because that's my field. But I will say that it is of great concern when I have a class and a student, when we were doing the first book of Genesis, couldn't find chapter, whatever it was, because she was looking at pages and didn't know how to understand chapters in the Bible.

And so that particular student subsequently came to know Christ that semester. But if I may digress here just a minute and say during COVID, we have also at Lincoln, our teaching assistants are Fulbright scholars.

They come from all over the world. And during COVID, one of them from Venezuela was unable to return to her country. So she was all alone in what's known as the foster house. And we continued our foundation's Bible study.

And we were studying the book of Deuteronomy. And she learned that God loves the foreigner. She gave her life to Christ. She had a basic knowledge of things Christian. And she is now at the University of Kentucky standing strong.

And I praise the Lord for the way he used that isolation to her benefit.

Praise God. If anybody wants to find out more about Lincoln University, you can go to Lincoln .edu. Lincoln .edu. Well, this October 6th, during Reformation month, is the 490th anniversary of the execution of William Tyndale at the age of 42.

And yet at a relatively young age, he accomplished much for the kingdom of God. Tom, Martin, if you could tell us anything you can about the atmosphere of England when Tyndale was born and raised. What kind of religious atmosphere was that?

And what led him to a diligent study of the scriptures to the point where he knew that every common man should have these sacred words in their own language?

Sure. Let me just give a brief survey of his life. And you can interrupt me, please, if I go too long. William Tyndale was born, we believe, about 1484 in Gloucester in the West Country. Gloucester was a rich area because of wool from sheep.

And there were a lot of international traders who had come to that area. So Tyndale would have grown up knowing about foreign languages. That's not far from Wales, where he probably knew Welsh. And he knew seven or eight languages by the time of his death.

He went as a student to Oxford University and studied at Magdalen Hall, which was part of Magdalen College at the time. It later developed into what's now known as Hertford College. And if you've seen pictures of the campus of Oxford University, you may have seen that bridge between buildings, which is reminiscent of the Bridge of Sighs in Venice.

That's Hertford College today. And there is a beautiful stained glass window of Tyndale there memorializing his student days there. At Oxford, he was horrified to find that the study of theology was strictly Aristotle.

No study of scriptures, no study of theology as we think of it, but it was Aristotelian logic which was discussed. And that was partly because since the early 1400s, it had been illegal not only to translate, but to possess any portion of the Bible in English.

We know the young man who about the year 1500 was burned alive because he had in his pocket a scrap of paper on which was written the Lord's Prayer in English. It became illegal to have the Bible in English, unlike the other countries of Europe, France, Germany, Switzerland.

They had translations in manuscript form, because this was before the days of printing, of portions of the Bible. But in England, it had been outlawed because of the work of John Wycliffe, whose story we'll have to read for another day.

Tyndale went to Oxford and came back after his stay there, and perhaps the short journey to Cambridge University, where Erasmus of Rotterdam was the visiting scholar in Greek, to the household of a man by the name of Sir John Walsh and Lady Walsh.

He was a priest, had gained a priest, and had tutored their children. The story is told by John Fox in his Book of Martyrs about how one day at a dinner table, one of the local clergy made a point, we'd be better off without God's law than without the Pope's law.

Supposedly, Tyndale replied, I defy the Pope and all his laws. If God spare my life, ere many days, the common plow boy will know more scripture than thou dost. And so it was. That's probably about where he began to set his life's task as translating the Bible into English.

And of course, it was just 30 years earlier that Gutenberg had invented movable type for the printing press, had developed new inks and ways of binding books in Germany, and Tyndale decided he would go to London.

He met with the Bishop of London, a man by the name of Cuthbert Tunstall, very strange name to us, but Tunstall was the Bishop of London and he needed a bishop's permission to translate the Bible into English.

Tunstall snubbed him and wouldn't meet with him because Tunstall was under the thumb of Cardinal Wolsey, and Cardinal Wolsey was building his political power to become the next Pope. He never gained that, but that's what his plans were.

So Tyndale later writes in one of his commentaries, his introduction to one of the books he translated, I soon learned that there was nowhere in all of England for me to do the work of translating the Bible into English.

So he went from there to Germany. We don't have an exact blow by blow, but we believe he landed in Hamburg. He went to Wittenberg that was discovered in the last century or early 20th century, that there was a registration among the students at Wittenberg where Luther had just begun to publish his Reformation views.

And then he moved from there to Cologne. Cologne had printing presses and he had a translation of the New Testament and set out to print the New Testament in English in order to send it back to England.

But there was an enemy of the Gospel who had the print shop raided. And after printing about 20 chapters of the Gospel of Matthew, the printer had to stop. Tyndale was able to gather up his manuscript and flee.

And so he went upriver south to the safe Lutheran town of Worms, where Luther had had his famous confrontation with Charles V. In Worms, he found a printer who would print. The number is not exactly known.

Some people say 6 ,000 copies. Some people say 3 ,000 copies. In any event, it was a large number of copies of the New Testament. And in 1526, 500 years ago this year, the first edition of the English New Testament was printed and smuggled back into England—it was still illegal—in bales of cloth, unbound, just the leaves.

And it was distributed, and it must have been wonderful, because for the first time, people would hear the Bible read in English. It was illegal to possess the English Bible. And you can imagine where all your life you've heard the priest standing with his back to you at the front of a church, mumbling in Latin the words of the Mass.

And all of a sudden, the priest looks at the congregation, and he reads in English, Ask, and it shall be given unto you. Seek, and ye shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened unto you. The event must have been extraordinary.

It was so extraordinary, actually, that the Bishop of London, Cuthbert Tunstall, went about to buy up as many copies of the New Testament in English as he could get and publicly burned them. If you go to London today, outside of St. Paul's Cathedral, you can see a place where the copies of Tyndale's New Testament were publicly burned.

But Tyndale took it to heart. He said, well, that's providing us more money so we can print other editions. He moved from Worms to Antwerp, which was kind of the—David Daniel calls it the Silicon Valley of the day.

There were 60 printers in one street alone, and he worked on a translation of the Old Testament. Now, when he was in Worms, there was a strong rabbinic school there, and he learned Hebrew. It was impossible to learn Hebrew in England.

We only know two people in all of England at the time who could read Hebrew. They were professors at Cambridge, and they had no interest in translation. They were only interested in it as kind of like codebreakers, seeing strange symbols and trying to understand what they meant.

He learned Hebrew, and he translated the five books of Moses into English in Antwerp. Had it printed there, his five separate little books, and you could buy them, all five, or you could buy any one of the five.

For the first time, the phrase was coined, let there be light. Of course, today, we all hear, let there be light in all sorts of contexts. It's important to note that Wayne Tyndale was not only the first person to give us the English Bible, and his translation goes through history for the centuries thereafter, even today, with his exact language.

But he also created modern English as we know it. Beowulf, the classic story, was written in Old English. If you try to read that today without a translation, you'll find it incomprehensible. Middle English is represented by the Canterbury Tales, which is like English today, but hard to understand.

For many years, people didn't really understand it at all until somebody deciphered it. But modern English, most scholars agree, began about the early part of the 1500s. They usually don't give credit to William Tyndale, but this was the day when everybody went to church.

When the English Bible was read in church, they heard it, and they conformed their speech to that. Modern English that we even speak today, and Bible translations which we use today, are largely dependent upon Tyndale.

In Antwerp, he also translated the historical books of the Old Testament, Joshua through 2 Chronicles. But before he was able to have it go to print, he was captured and held in a dungeon outside of Brussels.

Damp, dark, no one speaking English for about 16 or 18 months, after which he was taken out and tied to a stake, garroted. He was strangled to death, and then his body was burned for the fact that he held to the new, quote-unquote, Lutheran doctrines of salvation by grace through faith, faith in Christ alone.

Marilyn, would you like to add to that?

Well, I think that his last words before he was strangled were, Lord, open the king of England's eyes. And within two years, apparently, about two years, the Bible was required. It was required that every parish church have a Bible in its presence so that the common people could look at it.

But I think it's also, I've been recently corrected to note that it wasn't that easy to read. You just didn't go up and read it. You had to be in the presence of a man if you were a woman, or you had to be a certain age, or only done at certain times.

So the infiltration of the English language into the populace took time. And this is a process that we're describing here.

Now, are either of you aware of—I hate to use the word mercy in the case because they did execute Tyndale, but there have been many others. Archbishop Thomas Cramner pops into my mind, who was burned alive.

And, of course, Latimer and Ridley were burned alive. Is there any reason that you know of that they spared that depth of gruesome brutality to burn Tyndale alive, and they strangled him first before they burned his body?

He was given the honor of being guarded to death rather than burned alive because he was a scholar. He was respected as a scholar. He was known to be a linguist, highly regarded for his academic ability.

And for that reason, he wasn't burned alive. But you are correct. Later, after Henry VIII died and his successor, Enred VI, died, Henry's oldest daughter, Mary, became queen. And she was a Romanist and intent on destroying this Lutheranism, which was invading England.

And she caused to be burned at the stake alive. Cramner and Ridley and Latimer at Oxford and 300 others. I'm sorry, go ahead. I was going to say, John Rogers, after Tyndale's death, committed to the press the books which Tyndale had translated from the Old Testament, the historic books, Joshua II Chronicles, as part of a complete Bible known for reasons of security as Thomas Matthew's Bible.

And John Rogers, who did that, had been the chaplain at the English house in Antwerp, was the first of the martyrs of Mary Tudor in about 1550.

Go ahead. I'd like to add that it's a remarkable parallel that we can make between Tyndale and the heroes of our revolution, in the sense that Tyndale was ultimately breaking the stranglehold on the intellect of the English people by insisting that the Bible be available to the common man.

And when he was invited to come back, that was the foundational base. That was the basis of his refusal to accept the king's gracious invitation to return. Of course, he knew he'd probably be—well, he didn't know what would happen to him.

But I just wanted to make that comparison because of the incredible iron wall that was his goal to break.

Now, are either of you aware of the reasons that Rome gave to outlaw the Scriptures in any language other than Latin? And I know that apologists today, even if they regret the lengths of brutality that the church went to, they will actually try to do damage control to the reputation of Rome by claiming that this was out of love for the truth of God and they feared that if the Scripture was in the language of every common man, that would give an open door to the further spread of heresies.

And from what I know of history, it seems obvious that it was an effort to keep the laity ignorant and dependent upon the priesthood and the magisterium. But what do you know about that? And either one of you can start.

Well, the church was incredibly corrupt in those days. Even though celibacy was the rule for the clergy, a number of the popes had children, illegitimate children. The fear was that if the common man had access to the Bible, they might try to interpret it in ways in which the church said it should not be interpreted.

And so the theory was that you were protecting the common people, the ignorant, from heresy. In fact, not just the church, but Thomas More, who was made a saint by the Roman Catholic Church later because he opposed the remarriage of Henry VIII after the divorce or annulment with Catherine, had a great controversy with Tyndale in the press.

Cuthbert Tunstall, who I mentioned previously, the Bishop of London, commissioned Thomas More, gave him permission to read Tyndale's English Bible and to respond in English. And so More wrote a book called Against Heresies.

And it's a very, very difficult book to read because it's very long and unnecessary, but it basically boils down to a disagreement with Tyndale about the translation of four words. One of the words was, Tyndale translated the word which had in Latin been understood to be church as congregation.

He also translated the word which had been translated as priest in Latin to the English word senior. He called it elders, what he eventually became. It was first called senior. He translated the word for charity in Latin to love.

And the final word was metanoia, which means repentance. In the Latin, it had been translated to do penance. And each of those four words, the change of the translation, what I would say is a clarification of the Greek in English, was anathema to Thomas More and to the church.

And so there was a strong rebuke of Tyndale for causing these heretical words to creep into the Scriptures. And that was it. Tunstall, on one occasion in a sermon, said he'd found 2 ,000 errors in Tyndale's translation.

And David Danielle says, of course he did, because Tyndale was translating from the Greek, not from the church's Latin. And because there was no printing press before the 15th century, the only copies of a Latin Bible they had were copies of copies of copies of copies.

It was when the Muslim onslaught of Constantinople occurred and priests from the East brought manuscripts in Greek to the West that the Western world began to have a Greek New Testament. And, of course, when Rutenberg first printed the Bible, it was in Latin.

It was from a manuscript of the Latin Vulgate, which Jerome had started to translate in the 5th century. But that was the excuse given by the church, that if the common people have the Bible in their own language, they will misinterpret it.

And in order to protect the people from heresy, misunderstanding it, they should not have the Bible in English.

And RJ says, In addition to the prohibition of the Scriptures being possessed by the laymen in their common languages because of fear of the spread of heresy, was there something superstitious about the Roman Catholic Church's view of the Latin language?

It seems interesting to me that the Mass was conducted in Latin until the 1960s at the conclusion of Vatican II, and even today there are some isolated congregations or parishes that conduct the Mass in Latin.

That's an interesting question. Yeah, I can recall that my older brother, as I was born in 1962, and the Vatican II concluded in 1965 when I was three, but I can remember my older brothers—we were raised Roman Catholic, by the way.

I am a Reformed Baptist now. I got saved by the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ in the 1980s. But my older brothers, who were altar boys just as I was, were from a different time, and they had to learn Latin as altar boys because the Mass was conducted in Latin.

I did not have to do that because the Mass was conducted in English by the time I was an altar boy. But do you think there is validity in that idea that there was superstition attached to the sole use of Latin?
