Reading tonight is taken from the book of Exodus chapters 7 and 8 and Yahweh said to Moses See I have made you like God to Pharaoh and Your brother

Aaron shall be your prophet You shall speak all that I command you and your brother

Aaron shall tell Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go out of his land but I will harden

Pharaoh's heart and Though I multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt Pharaoh will not listen to you

He will not let you go out of the land, but I will harden Pharaoh's heart and though I multiply my signs

He will not listen to you Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts my people the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment

The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand Against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them

Moses and Aaron did so they did just as Yahweh commanded them now Moses was 80 years old and Aaron 83 years old when they spoke to Pharaoh Then the

Lord said to Moses and Aaron when Pharaoh says to you prove yourselves by working a miracle

Then you shall say to Aaron take your staff and cast it down before Pharaoh that it may become a serpent

So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants and it became a serpent then

Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers and They the magicians of Egypt also did the same by their secret arts for each man cast down his staff and they became serpents

But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staff still Pharaoh's heart was hardened and he would not listen to them as the

Lord had said Then the Lord said to Moses Pharaoh's heart is hardened He refuses to let the people go

Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he is going out to the water stand on the bank of the

Nile to meet him and Take in your hand the staff that turned into a serpent and you shall say to him

Yeah, the Lord God the God of the Hebrews sent me to you saying let my people go that they may serve me in the wilderness

But so far you have not obeyed Thus says the Lord By this you shall know that I am the

Lord behold With the staff that is in my hand. I will strike the water that is in the

Nile and it shall turn into blood The fish in the Nile shall die the

Nile will stink and the Egyptians will grow weary of drinking water from the Nile and The Lord said to Moses say to Aaron take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt over the rivers their canals

Their ponds and all their pools of water So that they may become blood and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt even in the vessels of wood in the vessels of stone

Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants.

He lifted up the staff struck the water in the Nile and all the water in the Nile turned into blood and The fish in the

So Pharaoh's heart remained hardened and he would not listen to them as the Lord had said

I will plague all your country with frogs the Nile shall swarm with frogs that shall come up into your house and into your bedroom and on your bed and into the houses of your servants and Your people and into your ovens and your kneading bowls the frogs shall come up upon you and on your people and on all your

Servants and the Lord said to Moses say to Aaron stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers over the canals over the

Pools and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt And the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt But the magicians did the same by their secret arts and made frogs come up on the land of Egypt then

Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron said plead with the Lord to take away the frogs from me and From my people and I will let the people go to sacrifice to the

Lord Moses said to Pharaoh be pleased to command me when I am to plead for you and for your servants and for your people that the frogs be cut off from you and your houses be left only in the

Nile and He said tomorrow Moses said be it as you say so that you may know that there is no one like the

Lord our God The frogs shall go away from you and your houses and your servants and your people and They shall be left only in the

Nile so Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh and Moses cried to the Lord about the frogs as he had agreed with Pharaoh and The Lord did according to the word of Moses the frogs died out in the houses the courtyards and in the fields

They gathered them together in heaps and the land stank But when

Pharaoh saw that there was a respite he hardened his heart and would not listen to them as the

Lord had said Then the Lord said to Moses say to Aaron stretch out your hand and strike the dust of the earth

So that it may become gnats in all the land of Egypt and they did so Aaron struck out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth and there were gnats on man and beast and The dust of the earth became gnats in all the land of Egypt The magician try magicians tried by their secret arts to produce gnats, but they could not

So there were gnats on man and beast and then the magician said to Pharaoh. This is the finger of God But Pharaoh's heart was hardened and he would not listen to them as the

Lord had said Then the Lord said to Moses rise up early in the morning present yourself to Pharaoh as he goes out to the water and say to him thus says the

Lord let my people go that they May serve me or else if you will not let my people go behold

I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants and your people and into your houses and the houses of the

Egyptian shall be filled with swarms of flies and also the ground on which they stand But on that day,

I will set apart the land of Goshen where my people dwell So that no swarms of flies shall be there that you may know that I am the

Lord in the midst of the earth Thus I will put a division between my people and your people Tomorrow the sign shall happen and the

Lord did so and there came great swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh and into the servants Houses throughout all the land of Egypt and the land was ruined by the swarms of flies

Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said go sacrifice to your God within the land

But Moses said it would not be right to do so for the offerings We shall sacrifice to the Lord our

God or an abomination to the Egyptians if we sacrifice Offerings abominable to the

Egyptians before their eyes. Will they not stone us? We must go three days journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the

Lord our God as he tells us So Pharaoh said I will let you go to sacrifice to the

Lord your God in the wilderness Only you must not go very far plead for me Then Moses said behold

I am going out from you and I will plead with the Lord that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh From his servants and from his people tomorrow

Only let not Pharaoh cheat again by not letting the people go to sacrifice to the

Lord so Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord and the Lord did as Moses asked and Remove the swarms of the flies from from Pharaoh and from his servants and from his people not one remained but Pharaoh Hardened his heart this time also and did not let the people go in the name of Jesus Amen well the plagues now have begun

Most frightening words in what we just read are that in spite of God's clear

Powerful judgments pestilences that were already beginning to rock

The economy and the world of the Egyptians and to show their gods to be false gods

Still the Egyptians and Pharaoh did not repent

It's it's actually quite frightening and over and again. I point out that in the

Old Testament We see the types and the shadows But in the New Testament we see the fulfillment of these types and shadows and what they were always

Pointing to the entire time. I want you to think about this for a second the very first plague

There's so much to it What do we make of this plague the first plague of turning the

Nile into blood? I mean the Nile truly was the lifeblood of ancient

Egypt It's the lifeblood of modern -day Egypt even to this day But remember back at the beginning of Exodus What was the

Nile being used for according to the book of Exodus in the first chapter? It was being used to slaughter innocent young male

Hebrew infants They were Martyred they they died for no other reason than that.

They were born Hebrew they were born in Israel and So they were for real martyrs they they they died because of that and it's interesting that in the in the book of Revelation chapter 16 these plagues make a reappearance and I want you to hear from Revelation 16 how

Water and seas and rivers being turned to blood what it points to Revelation 16 is the chapter where you get the seven bowls of God's wrath

These are the bowl judgments of God says I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels go

Pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth and harmful painful sores

Came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshipped its image and by the way, these sores and boils will make a

Reappearance will make their first appearance for real in the the book of Exodus in the in the weeks ahead second angel poured out his bowl into the sea and it became like the blood of a corpse and Every living thing died that was in the sea the third angel poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water and they became blood and I heard the angel in charge of the waters say

Just are you Oh Holy One who is and who was?

For you brought these judgments For they have shed the blood of the Saints and the prophets and you have given them blood to drink.

It is what they deserve Hmm So note that the book of Revelation chapter 16 verse 6

Helps us to understand this first of the plagues the turning of the

Nile into blood then the Egyptians have shed the blood of Holy innocent children of Israel Murdered these young baby boys how many of them lost their lives?

We know from the archaeological evidence from this time period from the city of Avarice that the number of women far outnumbered men as a result of this act of murder on the part of the

Egyptians and so God turning the Nile into blood is a type and shadow of the bold judgment from Revelation 16

Where the seas and the rivers and the bodies of water are turned into blood and It's because they have shed the blood of the

Saints the prophets and have given them blood to drink It's Frightening when you think about it and you'll note that it doesn't take much for God to take the entire earth and Bring it to its knees in his judgment

How many weeks have we've been dealing with this coronavirus thing? It seems like forever and Yet just a month ago a month ago month and a half ago.

We were enjoying a great economy we were enjoying all you know, all the benefits of You know our financial world just chugging along doing fine and in just a few short weeks the entire world

Has been shut up and The most frightening words the most frightening words in all of this were that the

Egyptians that Pharaoh Hardened his heart would not repent.

Let me continue from the from Revelation So then I heard the altar saying yes,

Lord God the Almighty True and just are your judgments. So the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the

Sun It was allowed to scorch the people with fire they were scorched by the fierce heat and this is a judgment of God coming and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues and They did not repent and give him glory

The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast and its kingdom was plunged into darkness

This darkness, by the way will show up in the plagues of Egypt as well So people nod their tongues in anguish they cursed the

God of heaven for their pain and for their sores and They did not repent of their deeds and Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the

Great River the Euphrates and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the king from the east and I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the

Mouth of the beast out of the mouth of the false prophet three unclean spirits like frogs

They are demonic spirits performing signs who go abroad to the kings of the whole world

To assemble them for battle on the great day of God Almighty So when you consider then what's going on here in the types and shadows in the book of Exodus, what are we looking at?

We're looking at a preview of the end of the world of God's judgment against humanity and the most frightening thing kind of a similar

Parallel if you would Pharaoh wouldn't repent Pharaoh wouldn't relent Pharaoh lied

Pharaoh cheated and as soon as there was respite from God's plagues

He went right back to the status quo Same with the people in the time of the book of Revelation at least the time that it's pointing to So the

Lord said to Moses Pharaoh's hearts hardened He refuses to let the people go so go to Pharaoh in the morning as he's going out to the water stand on the

But this wasn't a magic trick. This was a judgment of God So Pharaoh's heart remained hardened and he would not listen to them as Yahweh had said

Pharaoh turned and went into his house and he did not even take this into heart and all the

Egyptians dug along the Nile for water For they could not drink the water of the Nile, you know brothers and sisters

Dying as a martyr does not save you your blood cannot and I would remind you that We are saved by the greatest act of evil in all of humanity

The one who was truly wholly innocent He bled and died and suffered in our place and his blood was spilled

His blood came pouring out of his riven side After he had died on the cross and it's his blood that saves us our blood cannot save us but you're gonna note here that when

God is moving in mighty acts of judgment and by his power is

Causing calamities and disasters on the earth. He is doing so so that we would heal

His wrath against our own sin not their sin Not them and over those people over there

But our own sin, these are days that call for us to repent and to not harden our hearts

We have seen a pestilence work its way throughout the globe and there is no end in sight

Each day each day. I wake up and I look at the numbers globally of the of the new cases

That are reported we before we wake up tomorrow there will be over a half a million people around the globe who are infected by the coronavirus half a million and how many of them will end up in the grave and The reality is is each and every one of us has earned the right to join those who have you know

Fallen ill by the coronavirus and none of us deserves to live because of our own sin

These are times that call for repentance When God pours out his final judgments on the earth

It's sad and tragic that in the midst of all of these judgments and calamities

People rather than repent and call out to God for mercy will instead curse the

God who caused them pain curse the God who sent on them disease and pestilence and death and Even takes all of the oceans turns them to blood takes all of the streams of water turns them to blood

But we remember this That on those days that we are able permitted by God's grace

To take of the Lord's Supper that God works a miracle not in our judgment, but works a miracle for our salvation

Because what Christ says is most certainly true on those days when we have the Lord's Supper He it says when

Christ on the night that he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it gave it to the

Disciples and said take eat This is my body which is given for you for the forgiveness of sins

And then he says take drink this is the blood of the new covenant shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins and So the most amazing miracle happens not one of judgment

But one of forgiveness and mercy the very body and blood of Jesus Christ, which suffered on the cross

Who suffered on the cross so that we can be forgiven of our rebellion forgiven of our trespasses?

he takes Ordinary bread and wine and miraculously gives us his body and blood broken and shed for us

For the forgiveness of our sins It's the same miracle, but it works in reverse rather than working for our judgment

We who Christ through his mighty spirit Has the

Holy Spirit who's worked repentance in us through the preaching and the proclamation of the gospel Because it's

God's kindness that leads us to repentance that same Holy Spirit and that same

22:24

Jesus then Feeds us with his body and blood So that we can be forgiven and pardoned rather than face judgment because he's worked in us true repentance

It is appropriate then that the world economy has collapsed that the pandemic has circled the globe that the numbers are getting worse by the day and some of us are even gonna have to Shelter in place for how many weeks we do not know

But make no doubt about it they do not be deceived This is all calling us to repentance and that is the word for Lent anyway to repent so let us consider our own sin consider the mercy and grace of Christ and Let us not be foolish like Pharaoh or foolish like the world when those bold judgments are finally poured out

Let us not curse God But instead recognize that he is right in his justice right in his wrath and call out to him in Forgiveness call out to him and plead for his mercy and his grace

Because that's really what this is all about It's sad and tragic that Pharaoh Didn't repent didn't receive

God's mercy and forgiveness and didn't come and join Israel in the wilderness and sacrifice to the one true

Because even Jesus bled and died for him, it's so sad and tragic so take heart brothers and sisters

Note then that these acts of judgment these are a foretaste of the fact that God is delivering us from the dominion of darkness and Bringing us into a world where there is no sin.

There is no wrath. There is no judgment. There are no plagues There is no disease.

There's no coronavirus There is no poverty or death but only a world without end and we haven't earned this is all given to us as a gift because of God's great love and His mercy because he has sent his

Passover lamb Jesus Christ whose blood The path causes the true

Passover to happen the Passover of God's wrath Against sin so that rather than receiving what we have deserved and earned we instead receive life and peace
