Hey guys, Colin here, and welcome back to the channel where the Bible and critical thinking meet to give you real
00:05
Christian commentary about the things that matter. Thanks so much for watching, let's get into the video. So a couple years ago,
00:12
John MacArthur was asked what he thought about Beth Moore in just a few words. His words now live in infamy, as he told
00:19
Beth Moore to, quote, go home. And in response, there were dozens of big -name writers and big -name pastors in evangelical who were effectively calling
00:28
John MacArthur an old, angry, mean, sexist Calvinist who always has to ruin their party and rain on the feminist parade.
00:35
So the first thing I want to say about this is, thank you, John, we're all very proud of you, and keep up the good work.
00:40
The next thing I would like to do, before we refute Beth Moore's comments about this whole situation, and we will, is give a brief biblical defense of John's comments in the first place.
00:49
Like I said, John told Beth Moore to go home because she often preaches to both men and women, and is a professional
00:56
Bible teacher and expositor. This is simply unbiblical. First Timothy 2 .12 says, quote,
01:01
I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man. End quote. Therefore, when
01:07
Beth Moore teaches both men and women, and she does so very regularly, she is breaking the sovereign command of God for His people.
01:14
When John MacArthur tells her to stop this sinful behavior, he is not being mean, he's doing exactly what he should do.
01:20
It is people like Russell Moore who encourage Beth in her sinful teaching that are truly being unloving.
01:26
Encouraging someone in their sin is the opposite of biblical compassion. But John didn't just say stop teaching.
01:32
He said the words go home, and surely that level of sarcasm and flippantness would make this unbiblical on his part, right?
01:39
Wrong. Titus 2 .5 says that the older women in the church should teach the younger women to be, quote, workers at home.
01:46
And that phrase literally means that they should make it their first priority to be domestic home keepers.
01:52
Of course, biblically, women are still allowed to exit their homes. The Proverbs 31 woman did just that. But the
01:58
Bible also makes it very clear that women should be more attentive to their domestic concerns than to any and all concerns outside the home.
02:06
This may sound offensive to you, but it's what the Bible says, and John MacArthur knows that. So when John MacArthur says go home, he's not speaking out of turn.
02:14
In fact, he's giving Beth some great biblical advice. The word go seems to refer to Beth leaving her unbiblical teaching position.
02:22
And the word home seems to refer to the fact that she should probably attend to her domestic concerns instead of spending much of her time in unbiblical teaching positions, like we've already covered.
02:31
The passages I have quoted for you demonstrate that John MacArthur's comment is entirely biblical, regardless of how many feminist so -called evangelicals get offended.
02:40
Now, let's get into what you've been waiting for. Beth Moore's comments about John MacArthur. In early
02:45
February, Beth Moore started a Twitter thread that goes something like this, quote, I am baffled how often professing believers in Christ, often leaders, feel no need whatsoever to apologize, publicly or privately, or clear up misinformation they spread.
03:00
It seems that if you're a watchdog for a church, you get to bite at will. You're somehow above the ethics of Jesus, end quote.
03:07
At first glance, it's unclear what she's referring to, but the rest of the thread makes it very obvious. She continues saying, quote, slander, cyber -stalking, and smearing people's reputations are sins.
03:17
If you don't have conviction of sin, it's not because your wrongs are all right with God. It's because something is awry inside of you, end quote.
03:24
Again, it's still unclear who's being referred to in the rant. But the next part of the thread tells us everything we need to know.
03:31
She continues saying this, quote, I'm going to tell y 'all a story. After a certain public mockery at a pastor's conference,
03:39
I was literally heartsick for the ones who had done it. I thought how miserable they must be for having ridiculed a sister in Christ publicly like that.
03:48
I knew what I was going to say when they contacted me because it would have been completely sincere. I was going to say
03:53
I knew what it was like to let your mouth get away from you, and I forgive you without hesitation. But that contact never came.
04:00
It baffled me. It made me sad. Because I believed them to be people of spiritual integrity, even if I didn't see eye to eye with them.
04:07
That they felt no need to apologize was more worrisome to me than the ridicule. Y 'all, this isn't a game.
04:13
These things matter to the Lord. We are followers of Jesus. Not one of us is exempt from the conviction of sin and the responsibility to repent, end quote.
04:22
Now, I know that was a lot to take in, but it's important to understand the context. We know that she's referring to John MacArthur here because she says, quote, after a public mockery at a certain pastor's conference.
04:33
There's really nothing else she could be referring to. So we're going to go through this statement piece by piece and compare it to Scripture as well as what
04:40
John MacArthur said. First, she says, slander, cyberstalking, and smearing people's reputations are sins.
04:47
So let's recognize this first. Nothing that was done to Beth by John MacArthur was slander, cyberstalking, or smearing her reputation unbiblically.
04:55
In order for it to be slander, John would have had to lie about Beth, and he did not. She does teach both men and women.
05:01
The Bible does tell her not to do that. That's all true, and it should be said for the sake of protecting the body of Christ from her false teaching and her bad example.
05:09
Now, it is perhaps the case that John MacArthur smeared her reputation to a certain degree.
05:15
But he was not being unbiblical when he did that. John is a Christian man who believes the Bible. When you preach as a woman to men and women regularly, you are teaching falsehood about the nature of femininity.
05:25
You are setting a bad example to the young women of the church, and you are breaking God's law for His people.
05:31
Will all of these things have a positive or negative effect on the church? Should church leaders call these things out or not?
05:37
Obviously, the effects will be negative on the church, and obviously that means church leaders should call it out.
05:42
Now, if you combine all of this with the fact that Beth Moore has also partnered with false teachers like Joyce Meyer, and that she continuously spreads concerning teaching about her supposed direct revelations from God, John's comment becomes even more reasonable.
05:57
Romans 16, 17 says, I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught.
06:06
Avoid them. If you participate in public false teaching, as Beth Moore does, and then a good man of God calls you out publicly, as John MacArthur did, any smearing of your reputation, within biblical limits of course, is a result of your unrepentant false teaching and is entirely valid.
06:23
By Beth Moore's own standard, the Apostle Paul himself is smearing her reputation when he says that women should not be teaching in 1
06:30
Timothy 2, 12. There's no getting around that. Is Paul smearing her reputation? No. She's disobeying what he wrote.
06:36
Again, when you are breaking God's law, and when you are teaching falsely by occupying an unbiblical role, the person who calls you out for your sin is not in the wrong.
06:46
You are in the wrong. The next thing Beth says is, quote, After a certain public mockery at a pastor's conference,
06:52
I was literally heart -sick for the ones who had done it. I thought, how miserable they must be for having ridiculed a sister in Christ publicly like that.
07:00
End quote. Again, Beth, it may have been mockery on John's part, but it was mocking your false teaching.
07:06
The Apostle Paul mocks false teaching regularly in his letters. In Galatians 5, 12, Paul says, quote,
07:12
I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves. End quote. He's saying that the false teachers in the
07:17
Galatian church should cut some things off of themselves that usually would not be cut off, if you catch my drift.
07:23
Was Paul smearing their reputations? Well, yeah, to a certain degree, yes. Was he mocking them? Oh, you bet he was.
07:29
But was Paul being unbiblical as the Holy Spirit literally inspired him to write this? No, absolutely not, and it's unbiblical and sinful to suggest that.
07:38
In the same way, when John mocks Beth Moore's false teaching and promotion of unbiblical feminism in the church,
07:44
John is doing precisely what he should be doing. He does not owe Beth an apology. Beth owes an apology to the people she's deceiving.
07:51
This whole tweet is so backwards. It's incredible. Beth goes on, though, saying, quote, I was going to say that I knew what it was like to let your mouth get away from you, and I forgive you without hesitation.
08:01
But that contact never came. It baffled me and made me sad, because I believed them to be people of spiritual integrity even if I did not see eye to eye with them.
08:09
That they felt no need to apologize was more worrisome than the ridicule. End quote. So you see,
08:15
Beth Moore was going to graciously forgive John MacArthur. But what Beth is missing here is that you don't have to forgive things that aren't sins.
08:23
MacArthur does not need to grovel and ask for forgiveness for calling out Beth Moore's false teaching. Ephesians 5 .11
08:29
says, quote, Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. End quote.
08:35
To say that women can formally teach men is an unfruitful work of darkness. Why? Because it breaks the command of God for His church.
08:43
It encourages people to act in a way that God has explicitly commanded them not to. That is a work of darkness.
08:49
So John MacArthur should not feel sorry for asking Beth Moore to do what the Bible says. Beth should feel sorry for disobeying what the
08:56
Bible says and encouraging other people to do the same. Do you guys see how backwards this is? She implies that John had let his mouth get away from him.
09:04
No. Beth has let her mouth get away from her by disobeying God's Word and teaching men and women.
09:10
She is promoting unbiblical feminist doctrine in the church, and that is an affront to God's creative decree for His image -bearers, men and women.
09:18
John MacArthur didn't do anything wrong. In fact, Beth should be thanking John for having the gall to say what other people won't.
09:25
But in any case, let me leave you with some important observations. Notice that there is not a shred of Biblical argumentation from Beth Moore here.
09:33
She talks about some Biblical concept, sure, but she does not deal with the heart of John's Biblical argument at all.
09:39
There's no strong logical or moral defense of her teaching either. It's all just personal, emotional, and feelings -centered stuff.
09:47
Ironically, this further demonstrates why Beth Moore is unqualified and commanded in Scripture not to teach in the first place.
09:53
And unfortunately, most evangelicals think that Beth Moore is right just because her feelings are hurt. Many assume that you cannot be
09:59
Christ -like if you hurt someone else's feelings, and therefore, in an argument, the person who gets the most offended must be correct.
10:06
This is the way most Christians think about theological disagreements, and it's really bad. John MacArthur has broken the eleventh commandment of Thou shalt be nice.
10:15
Apologize to Beth and promise us, John, that you'll never come after this poor, innocent, hurt woman ever again.
10:21
She's crying. Can't you see what you're doing to her? That's the sentiment here. But that's all it is. It's sentiment.
10:26
We need to stop designing our beliefs and our theology based on the temporary emotions of people who disagree with us.
10:33
I mean, listen to the content here. Let me read you a few quotes from the thread so you can see what I'm saying. Beth says that her opponents, quote, feel no need to apologize, that they're slandering and smearing her.
10:45
Do you hear the argument here? I was feeling so sad after John's comments. I was feeling so passionate about this issue.
10:52
So why doesn't John MacArthur feel the need to apologize? It's all feelings. And the reason, by the way, that John doesn't apologize is because he thinks with his head, not his emotions.
11:02
That's why John's teaching is clear, biblical, truthful, and solid, and Beth's teaching is confusing, emotional, strange, and unbiblical.
11:09
They're coming from two different sources. But the stream of emotions just keeps on flowing in this message.
11:15
Beth says that John had, quote, publicly mocked her, that she felt, quote, literally heartsick for him, and that she couldn't stop thinking about how, quote, miserable
11:24
John must have felt for hurting his sister in Christ like that. See the pattern here? Beth knew what she was going to say to John.
11:31
She said that she was going to forgive him with open arms, and that, quote, it would be completely sincere.
11:37
And then she says, quote, it baffled me and made me sad. The entire thread is an emotional rant.
11:44
There is not a single, solitary, biblical reason that you should take Beth's side over John's.
11:49
Every biblical argument is in John's favor, again, because John does theology with his head, not his feelings.
11:55
And the only thing Beth has in her corner is, I'm sad, you hurt my feelings, and I can't believe you haven't apologized to me yet.
12:03
And most Christians are going to eat this stuff up like crazy because they want to be seen as compassionate.
12:08
Now, I'm not saying that Beth's feelings don't matter, I'm saying that her feelings don't matter specifically with reference to the issue at hand.
12:15
Beth Moore's feelings of being offended do not make John MacArthur wrong. Beth Moore being offended does not make her right, and it does not negate the command of Scripture.
12:25
If you read Beth's comments here, and shed a little tear as you feel yourself welling up some anger against John MacArthur for being such a meanie, you're falling into the trap.
12:34
It's manipulating your emotions. What John did was right. Beth is a false teacher who simply through the act of her teaching, not even just the content of it, is smuggling an unbiblical worldview into Christianity.
12:45
She's muddying the waters of doctrine. Biblically, John was right, and biblically, Beth was wrong.
12:51
And Beth's feelings happen to be hurt. All three of those statements are true, and do not contradict each other.
12:56
And they do not change the outcome of the situation, or what we should do in the Church, based on Scripture. So the moral of the story is, reject the unbiblical teaching and example of Beth Moore, no matter how upset she gets.
13:08
Let's keep calling her to repentance, and let's also keep supporting our brother John MacArthur. We must return to what the
13:14
Bible says about human sexuality. Ephesians 5 .24 says, Now, as the Church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
13:24
And 1 Timothy 2 .12 says, So keep secular feminism out of the
13:33
Church. Keep women out of the pulpit. And keep men at the head of the household. If any of those previous statements offended you,
13:39
I love you, but you're wrong. And you should take this up with God, because He's the one who inspired it. And please, pray for Beth Moore, that she would repent of this and turn to the truth of God's Word.
