It's time for another edition of Fighting for the
00:19
Fave, Monday, April 1st, 2013. Gotta tell you, this is the program that almost didn't happen.
00:29
Oh man, my laptop is behaving very badly.
00:35
I've been having problems with it for about a week. And I am not a newbie when it comes to computer problems.
00:43
This one has me in a kerfuffle. I think it might be time for a new laptop.
00:53
Thank you for tuning in or listening to Fighting for the Fave. My name is Chris Roseborough. I am your servant in Jesus Christ.
00:59
And this is the program that dishes up a daily dose of biblical discernment. The goal of which, help you to think biblically, help you to think critically, help you compare what people are saying in the name of God to the
01:10
Word of God. Sadly, there is no shortage of crazy things being said out there. We take the time to do the comparative work.
01:17
And often time when you're doing biblical comparison, one of the things I've been pointing out lately, especially as we've been working our way through the
01:26
History Channel mini -series, The Bauble, is it's not necessarily what's said, it's what's missing that is the most important thing.
01:38
And in fact, what we're going to be doing today, first hour, we're going to be working through, I'm not going to, let's just put it this way,
01:44
I'm going to spend the first hour, maybe a little bit longer, depending on if I wax eloquent or not, working through last night's final installment of the
01:53
History Channel mini -series, The Bauble. Let's just put it this way.
01:59
There wasn't any big theological super wincing problem in The Bauble.
02:06
In fact, it was more along the lines of, well, that was missing and whoa, they left that out and oh my, what did they do with that?
02:15
It became kind of a total episode of what did they not put into it and what did they put in its place, which actually tells you much about the theology.
02:28
For instance, if you really think that something is precious, that something is important, that something is central to Christianity or your relationship with your wife or whatever, those are the things you go to first.
02:43
And if you don't talk about things, well, they're not very important to you. And so using the movie metaphor,
02:50
I mean when they're out there filming, well, actually when I was growing up, I don't think they do this anymore.
02:55
When I was growing up, they actually would film things with film. That's why it was called filming.
03:03
Yeah, I know. There's a whole bunch of verbs out there. It makes you wonder if those are even the right things, verbs to use anymore.
03:11
But I don't think they use film, traditional film very often anymore. Oftentimes the cameras that they're recording with, not filming with because there's no film in it, but the things that they're filming, see, there you go again, that the cameras, it's all digital, and so it stores the data digitally in HD and then they take it into a computer.
03:31
But back in the day when it came to editing film, there was stuff that they would say would end up on the cutting room floor.
03:41
And why? Why would it end up on the cutting room floor? Well, if you've ever watched a DVD that has the director's cuts, they have the scenes that didn't make it into the theatrical presentation that made it to movie theaters.
03:58
What you will oftentimes find if you ever do the nerdy thing, like I've been prone to do from time to time because I'm a nerd, is that you watch some of those deleted scenes and you go, yeah, there was a good reason why that was deleted because it wasn't any good.
04:14
And so you sit there and you realize that there's some wisdom behind these so -called deleted scenes.
04:21
Well, think of it this way. When we're dealing with the History Channel miniseries The Bauble, the final installment, the last two hours of this thing, and the first hour, just real quick,
04:34
I have very little to say about it because for the most part, the first hour was just a theatrical depiction of Christ's passion, his suffering, his scourging, his trial, having the crown of thorns pressed into his head, him having to carry his cross, him going to Golgotha, being nailed to the cross, and then suffering and dying.
04:57
And the first hour I have no qualms with and I'm going to actually pick on in this first hour for the most part.
05:06
A couple of things toward the end, but when we get into hour number two where we start with the post -resurrection theology of this thing, there's some stuff that's just flat -out confusing and there's some stuff that just flat -out is inadequately portrayed.
05:25
And then going back with what I've been talking about, there's some very important pieces of Christian doctrine and theology that ended up on the cutting room floor of the video editors for the
05:39
History Channel miniseries The Babel. Now, I'm being generous. I mean, they may not – let's just put it this way.
05:44
It may not even be on the cutting room floor, whatever the digital cutting room floor is. It may not have ever made it into the script because they don't understand how important it is.
05:56
And so one of the things that really is obvious to me is that the theological advisors for the
06:03
History Channel miniseries The Babel don't know what – they don't know what the core message of Christianity is.
06:11
And as a result of it, they didn't think it worthy to actually stick into the post -resurrection stories that make up the
06:19
Bible. And so you watch this thing and it's like, oh, wow. And some of these omissions, they're not insignificant.
06:28
They're major and of utmost significance. And so one of the questions
06:33
I would ask is who exactly is the Jesus of the Babel?
06:39
I'm not sure. I don't know if he's divine, if he's a –
06:45
I don't know. Is he more along the lines of the god of the Aryans? Is he more along the god of Mormonism?
06:53
I'm not sure. The Christology in this thing is a mess and there's no actual proclamation where there should have been one where Jesus is called
07:04
God. And so he sends people out to change the world.
07:10
And so there's some serious omissions, and that's where the real thing needs to be.
07:15
The battle needs to be fought and the critique needs to be made, and that's what I'll be doing today. And then obviously there's some stuff you just sit there and go, what are they even saying?
07:27
So what we'll do is we'll spend the rest of this hour looking at the final installment of the
07:32
History Channel miniseries, The Babel, and I am so glad. I am so happy. I do not have to watch another episode of that thing.
07:44
Oh, yeah. It's a mess. And it is now in – once I'm done with today's episode of Fighting for the
07:52
Faith, except for the emails that might come trickling in, there's nothing left. I don't have to revisit this thing.
07:59
And I guarantee you that in the future, if I ever find myself in front of a television flipping channels and I see scenes from The Babel, I'll just change the channel.
08:15
And I'll just leave it at that. And what we'll do here is on our YouTube channel is we'll put together one long playlist of all of the segments that we've done in critiquing this and make that available as kind of a standalone thing.
08:31
So if people have questions about The Babel or concerns or things of that nature, they can reference that very long work.
08:41
So if anybody – if you know anybody who wants to invite you over for a
08:46
Bible study and it turns out to be a Babel study, then you'll be armed to basically say, let's put the
08:54
DVDs away and let's open up the real Bible. The book is so much better than the movie adaptation.
09:05
And you'll notice the book doesn't omit all the important theological bits. So that's kind of where we're going to go today.
09:13
And then in hour number two, kind of ease into this week, here's what we're going to do this week. Every day except for Wednesday, Wednesday will be our light edition of Fighting for the
09:22
Faith. What we will do during the sermon review time, there will be nothing but good, good
09:28
Easter sermons during this first week. Now, that's to kind of prepare you.
09:34
So after listening to this week's good Easter sermons, and I'll tell you right up front what it is that we're looking for in good
09:40
Easter sermons. Sermons that stick to a text that has to do with Christ's resurrection. It doesn't even have to be a gospel text.
09:47
You could take a look at 1 Corinthians 15, a legitimate biblical text. And there's even
09:54
Old Testament texts that you can go to that reference Christ's resurrection. If a pastor is going to preach from that, totally great with us.
10:00
So the sermon has to be from a biblical text that touches on Christ's resurrection. We're not looking for some abstraction of, you know, of resurrection, talking about, you know,
10:11
Jesus resurrecting your dreams or some such nonsense as that. No, it has to do with Christ's bodily resurrection from the grave.
10:20
And it may or may not touch on the fact how that then impacts our future bodily resurrection from the grave.
10:27
And the pastor needs to be focused on Christ and not himself. So, you know, those are the ideas what we're looking for.
10:34
So we're going to feature those types of sermons all this week. While we're doing that, we'll be sifting our way through the submissions that we're already beginning to receive from you, the listeners of Fighting for the
10:45
Faith, for basically this year's Worst Easter Sermon of the
10:50
Year contest. And already, I think I've got one, possibly two contestants lined up, and it's only the day after Easter.
10:59
But man, there's some rotten Easter sermonage out there that people are more than happy to share with us.
11:08
So if you want to submit somebody to be considered or a sermon to be considered for this year's
11:14
Worst Easter Sermon of the Year contest, which will happen next week, the whole week will be dedicated to nothing but bad
11:22
Easter sermons that you will then vote on at the end of the week. Email me at TalkBackAtFightingForTheFaith .com
11:28
and make sure in the subject header you put Worst Easter Sermon Contestant. You know, something to alert me to the fact that what you're doing is sending me a link to a sermon that you want me to review.
11:39
And we do review every single submission. So keep that in mind. All right. So with all of that,
11:45
I think it's probably best if we dive into the program proper. And since this is our last installment of the
11:52
History Channel miniseries, The Bauble, here's our Bauble update music. It's only in Baubles that I can change the world.
12:06
Yeah, change the world, man. That's what Jesus wants us to do. Just go out and change the world.
12:15
Make sure to say something kind about Jesus when you're out there, you know, changing the world. That's the important part.
12:25
All right. That's Eric Clapton from his hit single Change the
12:30
World. OK, so this is our final installment of the History Channel miniseries, The Bauble.
12:35
And what we're going to do is just kind of walk back through the last bits.
12:43
And I mean, the last bits of Christ's death. Well, not death, but, you know, it's post death right at the point of the resurrection.
12:50
And as I've pointed out, in order to understand the bad theology in this two hour segment of the
12:56
Bauble, you got to look for what's missing. And since you can't see it, let me tell you one of the important features that's missing, absolutely missing regarding Jesus's burial.
13:12
OK, now, what I found interesting is, is that they had Nicodemus actually come to claim the body of Jesus.
13:20
And and Joseph of Arimathea, I think, was with him, but they never really recognized him as being present.
13:27
So I'm assuming that the guy who was silent with Nicodemus happened to be Joseph of Arimathea, which would be kind of historically important, if you know what
13:34
I mean. But I thought that was an interesting thing that they did. But here's what they did. They buried Jesus and they showed a scene where Mary and Nicodemus and the gang were caring for and anointing his body with oils and spices and preparing his body for burial.
13:50
And it was a nice touching little scene. Obviously, it's not recorded in the Bible as to the details of how it happened.
13:56
But we know that that's exactly what happened. So they they went ahead and put some details around that and then they closed the tomb.
14:04
And you're thinking, OK, well, you know, up to this point, it's you know, there's not much to quibble with with the the
14:11
Bible. But then you notice something missing. And this is important because it comes in later in the
14:19
Bible. And the thing that's missing, well, that would be, you know,
14:24
Caiaphas's insistence that the Romans seal the tomb and guard it because they had heard
14:32
Jesus say that he was going to raise again from the dead. That was totally missing.
14:38
In fact, that detail wasn't even hinted at. And there wasn't a single Roman soldier to be found anywhere near Jesus's tomb.
14:49
Which is actually really important. The reason why it's important is because that then plays into historically how we know whether or not
15:00
Jesus actually rose from the grave. But this will come into play later when Caiaphas is really upset with the disciples for healing a beggar and making it so that he can walk and then preaching about Jesus.
15:14
And the way Caiaphas comes off, no joke, it's it's as if he's completely oblivious to the fact that Jesus had risen from the grave.
15:24
OK, so where we pick up today's audio bytes from the Bible is
15:30
Regina. Regina, the 13th female apostle that nobody else knew about. Apparently, I think she's from the
15:36
Gnostic Gospels. And she comes running, she was like the first one at the tomb.
15:41
You're thinking, well, wasn't Mary? Yeah, I understand Mary Magdalene was supposed to be. But since Regina is the person that we're referring to here,
15:49
I refuse to call her Mary Magdalene in honor of our true biblical Christian sister,
15:54
Mary Magdalene. Regina, the two of them really don't historically look alike at all.
16:00
And so I refuse to insult our sister in Christ by calling this character
16:07
Mary Magdalene. Instead, I continue to refer to her as Regina. So she's the first one at the tomb.
16:12
She comes back and announces that Jesus is alive. And, well, listen carefully.
16:20
I'll point out kind of the important phrase that is, well, underwhelming to say the least.
16:26
So here's Regina announcing that Jesus is alive. Peter, everyone, the tomb is open.
16:39
He's alive. I saw him. That's not possible. I saw him.
16:45
Mary, maybe it was someone else. You think I'm mad? Peter, see the tomb for yourself.
17:00
So, Peter and John head off to the tomb. No sign that the Roman soldiers ever were there.
17:18
Now, do you believe me? But he's gone.
17:39
He's back. Now, this is supposed to be an exciting thing. He's back.
17:46
Okay, now, there's something really underwhelming about this, okay? And this kind of plays out in the later depictions regarding what has happened here.
17:55
Well, the church that I attend, and I also serve, on Easter Sunday, the pastor is prone to say things like this.
18:05
He is risen. And then people would shout back, he's risen indeed. Alleluia.
18:13
Okay, well, as you're going to see, there's a lot of confusion as to how they discuss this particular event, the resurrection.
18:20
And I'll kind of play that for you as we go. So, now the announcement is, oh, he's back.
18:26
So, I mean, on Sunday morning, do you get up and shout, he's back, he's back indeed?
18:33
No, there's something screwy with this language.
18:39
I think it's a lot stronger than, he's back. You know, you get what
18:46
I'm saying. Well, we continue. So, they run back, and they're going to end up having an impromptu
18:52
Lord's Supper because of what's going on here. And then Jesus is going to appear in their midst, and Thomas is going to have his little doubting episode while all this is going on.
19:03
Just listen in. A cup and some wine.
19:23
What happened? His body, his blood, and their life.
19:49
Okay, so apparently the news, well, the empty tomb has prompted
19:54
Peter to hold an impromptu Lord's Supper. And so he's reciting the words he heard,
20:00
I'm the way, the truth, and the life, omitting the important bits like, and nobody comes to the
20:05
Father except for through me. That would be pretty important theology there. And while he's saying this, presto, blammo, well,
20:13
Jesus appears. And that sound, that's
20:21
Jesus coming back. And then
20:32
Thomas says, no way, uh -uh, uh -uh. So he's not believing it. No, this isn't real.
20:56
So Jesus approaches Thomas and decides to have a little, you know, some words with him to kind of undo his skepticism and prove that, oh, yeah, this is for sure real.
21:13
Stop doubting. Nice long pause for dramatic effect.
21:35
Thomas, stop doubting. Pause, pause, pause. Drama continues. Pause, pause.
21:48
Okay, so he's proven himself to Thomas. And what comes out of Thomas' mouth?
21:56
Well, listen in and then we'll have to do the comparative work because what's missing is super important. It's mucho importante.
22:04
It is you. Yeah, that's it.
22:11
So Thomas breaks down and, it is you. Yeah, listen again. If you're underwhelmed, you should be.
22:17
Hang on. It is you. Because you see me, you believe.
22:26
So Jesus says, because you see me, you believe. Believe what? That it's you?
22:33
He's back? Huh. Okay, now if you have your
22:39
Bible, flip on over to the Gospel of John, chapter 20. The Gospel of John.
22:45
Chapter 20. And what we're going to do is we're going to read John's account of the resurrection.
22:53
Okay, because this is where a lot of the, well, edited bits here from this week's installments of the
23:01
Bible, that's where they're from. And, well, the reason why I'm underwhelmed is because there's some really important theology that has ended up on the cutting room floor.
23:13
Stuff that I think that viewers of the Bible, who think that they're watching the
23:18
Bible, really should know. Because this is really important Christology and, well, stuff regarding the resurrection.
23:26
So we'll start at verse 1. John, chapter 20, verse 1. Now, on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early.
23:33
Notice it was Mary Magdalene and not Regina. And while it was still dark and the tomb, that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
23:41
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the
23:48
Lord out of the tomb and we don't know where they have laid him. So Peter went out with the other disciple and they were going toward the tomb.
23:57
Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
24:02
That's John's polite way of saying, yeah, I beat Peter to the tomb. So both of them were running, we got that part.
24:08
And stooping in and looking, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
24:14
Then Simon Peter came following him and went into the tomb and he saw the linen cloths lying there. And the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a place by itself.
24:27
And then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in and saw and believed.
24:33
For as yet they did not understand the scripture that he must rise from the dead. And then the disciples went back to their homes.
24:40
Now notice the explanation is not, he's back. It's that he had to rise from the dead.
24:47
Okay. You know, he's saying he's back. Sounds like, oh yeah, you know, that Jesus guy, you know, he likes to travel a lot.
24:54
And, you know, for the past couple of days, he's been vacationing in Bermuda. You know, anyway, verse 11, but Mary stood weeping outside the tomb.
25:06
And as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain.
25:15
One at the head, one at the feet. Now, why didn't we get the ninja angels?
25:21
That would have made this even better. But, you know, I think they're working with a different theology here.
25:27
So, okay, we got the two ninja angels. Joke. They're at the one at the head and one at the foot where Jesus was.
25:32
So they said to her, woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, they have taken away my Lord.
25:38
I do not know where they have laid him. So having said this, she turned around and saw
25:43
Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. What's the reason for this, by the way?
25:50
You'll see that she doesn't really turn fully. The text will explain it to you. Plus, she's been weeping. I don't know if you've ever noticed this.
25:57
Not that I ever weep because, you know, I'm a guy and we're not allowed to. But if you've ever spent some time weeping, it's a little difficult to see.
26:05
And the reason why is because tears have a way of, well, messing with the lenses of your eyes and just kind of making it, in general, difficult to see.
26:13
You know what I'm saying? So anyway, so she said, woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?
26:19
This is Jesus saying this. Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him and I will take him away.
26:28
Jesus said to her, Mary. She turned and said to him in Aramaic, Rabboni, which means teacher.
26:39
Jesus said to her, Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them,
26:45
I am ascending to my father and your father, to my God and to your God. So Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples,
26:52
I have seen the Lord and that he had said these things to her. Now on the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the
27:05
Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
27:13
And then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you, as the
27:18
Father has sent me, even so I am sending you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,
27:23
Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.
27:31
Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him,
27:38
We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the hands and the marks of the nails, and place my finger into the marks of the nails, and place my hand into his side,
27:47
I will never believe. Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them.
27:57
Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your fingers here and see my hands, and put your hand and place it in my side.
28:09
Do not disbelieve, but believe. Thomas answered him.
28:14
Now here's the important part that was omitted. Let me read it to you in Greek first. Thomas answered him saying, ὁ κύριος μου, καὶ ὁ Θεός μου, which translated means,
28:30
My Lord and my God. Right here with Thomas' confession that he believes, he's not just saying,
28:43
Oh, it's you. I believe you're back. No. Thomas, here in John 20, verse 28, confesses
28:55
Jesus Christ to be none other than his Lord and his
29:00
God. This is vital, important theology that found its way to the cutting room floor of the folks who were responsible for producing the
29:14
Bible. I mean the Bible. And so let me back this up again. And here's Thomas' great confession from the
29:23
Bible. And listen in and see if you notice just how underwhelming this really is.
29:36
That's right. He said, It is you. And then Jesus says, Because you see me, you believe.
29:44
Because you see me, you believe. You believe what? Well, when we read it back from the actual biblical
29:49
Bible, sorry for the redundancy. So let me go back. Jesus says, Do not disbelieve, but believe.
29:56
Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God. And Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me?
30:03
Blessed are those who have not seen and have yet believed. Believed what?
30:09
That Jesus Christ is both God and Lord. Not that he's back or,
30:16
Hey, it's you. No, it's, Hey, you're my Lord and my God. That's what's being proclaimed here in the
30:26
Bible. But in the miniseries, The Bible, the great aha moment is, Oh, hey, you know, it is you.
30:35
That's a neat trick that you did, Jesus. And you're back. I'm just like,
30:41
What? What? What? What is going on in this miniseries that they would omit?
30:48
One of the most important, vital, critical, theological statements regarding Jesus Christ in all of Scripture, where Thomas confesses
30:58
Jesus to be, Well, that's not important to the people who produce the
31:06
Bible. Well, they just think that the important thing is, is that he finally recognized, Hey, that's Jesus. But see, the thing is, is that think of it this way, which plays to a larger crowd.
31:18
Thomas saying, Hey, it is you, Jesus. And then the big aha moment is to say,
31:24
Yeah, that's right. Blessed are you who believe without seeing that, Hey, it's me.
31:31
Or is that the kind of statement that plays to a larger audience? Or the statement that says,
31:37
Jesus is actually the God who created you, and he is your Lord. You see, there's a lot of people, if you put
31:44
Thomas' real statement in there, are going to go, Oh, whoa, did Thomas just say that Jesus is
31:51
God? Yeah, he just did. And Jesus didn't rebuke him for it. Jesus says he's blessed for believing it.
32:01
But that didn't make it into, well, the Bible. And that's not the only thing that didn't make it in there.
32:08
There's some other important stuff, well, that ended up on the cutting room floor. I will fast forward now to the day of Pentecost, at least as it's portrayed in the
32:18
Bible. And rather than the disciples being told to wait, they're told by Jesus at the point of his ascension to keep asking for the
32:30
Holy Spirit. But Jesus tells them to go into Jerusalem and wait. This is the details we get from the
32:35
Gospel of Luke. Go into Jerusalem and wait. We get this from the book of Acts as well. And so what happens is we pick up the disciples on the day of Pentecost, and Thomas is being very impatient, very, very, very impatient.
32:47
The reason why he's impatient is because the Holy Spirit hasn't shown up, and he's been asking for him every day like Jesus told him to.
32:54
But, well, that little detail is not actually in the Bible. And the thing that Jesus asked the disciples to do was wait.
33:01
That's what the Bible says, but not the Bible. So here's the Bible version of this. And there was, well, let me put it this way.
33:08
There was one good thing in their depiction of Pentecost, one. But we'll get to that in a second.
33:15
Here we go. Yeah, that's Thomas going, when will it come, the
33:20
Holy Spirit? It, it, not he. Because, well, the
33:26
Bible actually teaches the Holy Spirit is a he. So now Thomas is saying, when will it come, the
33:31
Holy Spirit? When will it, not he, but it. That's bad theology right there. I don't care who you are.
33:38
Jesus said all we have to do is ask. I have been asking. Yeah, he's been asking for the Holy Spirit, the great it.
33:45
Every day. The Holy Spirit will come. And that's Peter saying the
33:50
Holy Spirit will come. The time is right. Right. I think we should pray together.
33:57
So they're going to have a prayer around the table. Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed be your name.
34:10
Now, this is something I like. I like the fact that they're portraying the disciples as praying the Lord's Prayer as they were taught to pray by Jesus.
34:17
I think this is a good touch, not a bad one. Your kingdom come.
34:25
Your will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Now, I've got to say this. I'm just glad that they didn't end it off with a
34:31
Hail Mary full of grace. That would have been awkward. Give us this day our daily bread.
34:38
And forgive us our trespasses. As we forgive those who trespass against us. Now, that sound that you hear is the arrival of the
34:45
Holy Spirit. As a wind. No tongues of fire are present.
34:51
Apparently, they didn't have the budget to show that. They had the budget to show, well, you know, the entire earth was flooded, which
34:58
I think is fine. But they don't have the budget to show that the Holy Spirit shows up with tongues of fire. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
35:23
So, everybody outside, I mean, the disciples and Regina, are in an upper room, praying the
35:31
Lord's Prayer. This wind starts to whip up, and even the people outside are noticing that the wind has kicked up.
35:36
Even Caiaphas, the high priest, has noticed that the wind has kicked up. Now, what you're hearing there, that would be the
35:57
Apostle John, all of a sudden declaring the wonders of Christ in Koine Greek. And then you've got
36:08
Matthew speaking in some other language. And this is
36:24
Regina now, speaking in Latin. I'm just going to pause right there and kind of tell you what's missing here.
36:42
What's awkward about it is the Day of Pentecost is, for the most part, portrayed as, well, the disciples are up in an upper room.
36:49
The Holy Spirit comes in like a big windstorm. And then the disciples, while still in the upper room, all of a sudden are able to speak in other languages.
37:01
But there's nobody else in the room with them to hear them speaking in these other languages.
37:07
But apparently the way they portrayed it is their voices are carrying out the windows, and so the people who are within earshot of their windows are hearing the wonders of Jesus being proclaimed to them in other languages.
37:20
Yeah, and well, then there's something really important that goes missing.
37:27
Number one, the disciples, yes, they were speaking in other languages, which, by the way, I think is a great way to depict it, because that's exactly what happened.
37:35
You know, the modern -day Pentecostals would have you believing that on the Day of Pentecost, the disciples were barking like dogs and babbling in unknown languages.
37:45
Nothing could be further from the truth. So I'm glad that they depicted this as actually speaking in known tongues.
37:51
But what's missing, well, let's continue. ... So the disciples are all kind of looking at each other stunned, like, what just happened?
38:36
How can we speak those languages?
38:47
The Holy Spirit, He is with us. Okay, so how can we speak the
38:54
Holy Spirit's with us? And so they're all marveling. They all have a good laugh, and that's the end of the scene.
39:06
Notice anything missing? You know, like Peter's great
39:11
Pentecost sermon, where the gospel is proclaimed? Yeah, that was, like, well, totally
39:21
AWOL. In fact, what we'll do, we'll take a quick break, and when we come back, we'll take a look at the biblical account of the
39:26
Day of Pentecost to see exactly what was omitted from the Babel's telling of the story, because I think that was an important detail, where we would have really heard the biblical gospel, but we didn't.

46:50
All right, continuing with this week's critique of the History Channel miniseries, the Bible, which by the way, like I've said,
46:57
I'm very excited about the fact that this is the last installment. Let's go back and take a look at the important, well, parts of the day of Pentecost that were omitted.
47:09
In the History Channel's depiction of the day of Pentecost, the disciples are in an upper room.
47:15
Thomas is impatient and the reason he's impatient is because Jesus said that, you know, keep asking for the
47:21
Holy Spirit and he'll give it. So he's been asking for it and ain't no Holy Spirit showed up. So he's not happy about the fact the
47:27
Holy Spirit hasn't showed up. And so then all of a sudden there's a big rushing wind. The Holy Spirit shows up and the disciples stay in an upper room.
47:35
They speak in other languages and afterwards they go, whoa, wow, that was cool. How can we do that?
47:41
And Peter deduces, hey, that was the Holy Spirit that gave us that power. End of story.
47:48
Well, just like with Thomas coming to faith or believing that Jesus really rose from the grave, he wasn't saying, oh, yeah, that's you.
47:58
Well, that's you, Jesus. Wow. He wasn't saying that. He was saying you're my Lord and my God. That got omitted.
48:04
Well, there's important bits that got omitted in the Pentecost story as well. Now, real quick,
48:10
I had told you that Jesus didn't say to them, as was depicted in the History Channel edition, that, you know, that Jesus said keep asking for the
48:18
Holy Spirit. So Thomas keeps asking, all right, Jesus, I want the Holy Spirit. Give me the Holy Spirit. Come on, Jesus, give me the Holy Spirit. Give me the Holy Spirit.
48:24
And he's really impatient because he's been asking for days, and Jesus hasn't sent the Holy Spirit. That's not what
48:29
Jesus said to do. Luke 24, verse 45, then he opened their minds so they can understand the
48:38
Scriptures. And he said to them, Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations beginning from Jerusalem.
48:50
You are witnesses of these things, and behold, I'm sending the promise of my Father upon you, but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.
48:59
So Jesus basically says, hey, go into the city and wait, just wait, okay?
49:07
Chapter 2, verse 1 of Acts now is where we pick up the story. This is after Christ's ascension.
49:13
It's 50 days after his resurrection. So when the day of Pentecost arrived, they, the disciples, were all together in one place.
49:20
And suddenly there came from heaven a sound of a mighty rushing wind. No problem there. And it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
49:28
And divided tongues as a fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
49:33
That was omitted. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
49:40
The miniseries does depict that. And then here's what happens. And now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
49:49
And at this sound the multitude came together and they were bewildered because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
49:55
And they were amazed and astonished saying, are not all these who are speaking
50:01
Galileans? And how is it that we hear each of us in his own native language?
50:07
Parthenians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome.
50:19
So both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.
50:26
And all were amazed and perplexed saying to one another, what does this mean? But others mocking said, well, they're filled with new wine.
50:33
So obviously, the way the story goes, the disciples didn't just continue to sit around the table there.
50:41
They took these miraculous abilities to proclaim the wonders of God in other languages and made sure to go out and let everybody hear these wonders of God in their own languages.
50:54
And the crowd recognized them as Galileans going, how is it those Galileans are able to do that?
51:01
Because Galileans aren't exactly known for being the sharpest pencils in the pencil box.
51:06
So now, the other part they totally omitted, and which would have been perfect for them to put in here because the gospel would have been preached.
51:16
But Peter standing with the eleven lifted up his voice and addressed the men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem.
51:22
Let this be known to you and give ear to my words for these people are not drunk as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day, but this is what was uttered through the prophet
51:32
Joel. And in these last days, it shall be declares the Lord that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy and your young men shall see visions, old men dream dreams.
51:43
Even on my male servants and female servants in those days, I will pour out my spirit and they shall prophesy.
51:49
And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
51:55
The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood. This happened when Jesus was crucified before the day of the
52:02
Lord comes the great and mighty magnificent day and it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the
52:08
Lord will be saved. Great sermon. So that was the big miracle, by the way, of Pentecost.
52:16
The big miracle was not the speaking in tongues. It was the sermon. It was the sermon that was the big miracle, right?
52:24
So Peter continues, men of Israel, hear these words, Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst.
52:34
As you yourselves know, this Jesus delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God.
52:39
You crucified him, killed him by the hands of lawless men. And God has raised him up, loosing the pangs of death because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
52:49
For David says concerning him, I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken.
52:57
Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced. My flesh also will dwell in hope for you will not abandon my soul to Hades or let your
53:05
Holy One see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life and you will make me full of gladness in your presence.
53:13
Oh, this is a great sermon. Why did it get omitted? Because the theological advisors for the
53:21
History Channel miniseries, The Bible, in their theology, which is false theology, mistakenly think that the big deal of Pentecost was that they spoke in other languages.
53:32
No, the big deal is that Peter preached the gospel. And thousands were brought to repentant faith and trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins.
53:42
We continue with this wonderful sermon that was omitted. Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch
53:50
David that he both died and was buried in his tombs with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.
54:08
This Jesus God has raised up and of this we are all eyewitnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God and having received from the
54:16
Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
54:21
For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool.
54:30
So let all of the house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this
54:36
Jesus whom you crucified. Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles,
54:44
Brothers, what shall we do? And Peter said to them, Repent. Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the
54:56
Holy Spirit, for the promise is for you, and it is for your children, and all who are far off, and everyone whom the
55:03
Lord God calls to himself. Great stuff! Do you think that the reason why they omitted that is because, well, it maybe had just too clear of a gospel message in it?
55:16
Because that's what made it to the cutting room floor. The only thing that was important on Pentecost was apparently that the disciples, in the privacy of an upper room and a large windstorm, had the miraculous ability to speak in other languages, and that was their sign that, hey, the
55:34
Holy Spirit's now here. Again, it's what's missing that's kind of the important part in this week's installment of the
55:44
History Channel miniseries. Now, this then makes me come to another quote from, well, this week's
55:52
Bible that just has me shaking my head, and this has to do with the explanation as to, well, what happened to Jesus?
55:59
Now, keep in mind, I mean, they did portray Jesus dying. Although they never showed him raising from the dead, the implication was that he's back, so I'm assuming that he rose from the grave.
56:12
But listen to this little bit of theological information from one of the disciples preaching about Jesus post -Pentecost now in the
56:21
Bible. Do you think he is healed by our power? Now, that's
56:26
Peter. He's just healed the beggar. This is found in Acts 3.
56:32
We'll take a look at it. And he's addressing the crowd. Do you think that this man was healed by our power? Let me back this up. Here we go.
56:39
Do you think he is healed by our power? It is through Jesus he did not die.
56:47
It is through Jesus he did not die. What?
56:56
He didn't? Well, then what was the whole point of that Roman soldier sticking that lance into Jesus' side?
57:04
He didn't die? Yeah, again, listen again. It is through Jesus he did not die.
57:12
He is still with us. It is his power that made this man walk. Okay, so Jesus' power is the one that made this man walk, and Jesus didn't die.
57:25
What is going on? So, did he swoon? Is that what they were showing
57:31
Jesus doing on the cross? I'm a little confused. Why would Peter say that Jesus didn't die?
57:37
Remember, it was Peter who said, Oh, he's back. What exactly happened to him?
57:43
You know, this is one of the things in this week's installment of the Bible where you have conflicting statements about what exactly happened to Jesus, and here
57:53
Peter is saying he didn't die. Well, let's continue with how the miniseries handles this particular event and see, well, again, what's missing.
58:04
Jesus did this. Jesus did this. Jesus. So everyone's excited because Jesus is the one who healed this beggar guy.
58:13
Jesus did this. Jesus. And, of course, the high priests are going to hear this and they're not going to be happy about it. Jesus did this.
58:20
Jesus did this. What are they saying?
58:29
They're shouting that wretched man's name again. They say he cured the beggar.
58:36
Bring the ringleaders to me and that lying beggar. How many have they turned today?
58:56
I think 5 ,000. So the question was how many are attending, like, you know, listening to the disciples.
59:03
5 ,000 people are showing up to listen to the disciples. That's the report from Malchus, the servant of the high priest.
59:09
5 ,000. 5 ,000.
59:16
Tell me, why did you think it would be acceptable to preach in the name of a dead heretic?
59:27
Jesus isn't dead. He lives. Okay, now, so this is
59:33
Peter saying to the high priest, Jesus isn't dead. He lives. Now remember earlier in today's episode of Fighting for the
59:40
Faith, I told you that something important was missing at Jesus' tomb and that would be the regiment of soldiers that were posted there at the request of, well, the temple officials.
59:55
Okay, so here we've got Peter saying, hey, Jesus isn't dead. He's alive. Okay, and the high priest, rather than, well, he looks shocked at the news.
01:00:06
Let's just put it this way. When he shouldn't have been shocked at all because, well, he had already heard the news about that from the soldiers who he ended up having to pay off to basically say, listen, here's some money.
01:00:21
Just say they stole the body. Okay, but the way they portrayed this now in the History Channel miniseries of Bible, Caiaphas looks like this just came out of nowhere.
01:00:31
I mean, this is news. What? He was executed.
01:00:37
He is dead. See, there you go. He can't possibly be alive. Right. Yeah, notice there's some really important information missing here and then on top of it, you had
01:00:47
Peter earlier saying, oh, Jesus didn't die. Okay. This man walks today only through the power of Jesus Christ.
01:01:06
Really? He has been lame since birth.
01:01:21
Yes, I see. You are not allowed to speak of this beggar or your dead
01:01:31
Messiah from this moment on. This is the truth.
01:01:38
We have a duty to speak of. Duty? Duty! I have a duty.
01:01:45
Now, this sounds all brave and everything. Oh, this is the truth and we have a duty to say this.
01:01:51
But then again, the real story has so much more of a theological edge to it.
01:01:57
So here we've got some abstract thing. So Peter just said that, well,
01:02:03
Jesus didn't die. And then Caiaphas is totally caught off guard with this news that this guy that they executed is apparently alive.
01:02:12
And then Peter bravely says, well, it's the truth and we have a duty to the truth. I mean, it all sounds brave and everything.
01:02:18
We'll take a look at the details in a minute here to find out what's missing because what's missing is rather important.
01:02:25
A duty to our temple, to our nation, to our...
01:02:33
I also have the law. I have the power. Here, you will be silent.
01:02:49
You will be silenced. Take them away. Come on!
01:02:56
Now, real quick, before I get to the biblical story, we'll take a look at Acts chapter 3 and 4.
01:03:02
Take a look at what's omitted because, I mean, the way that was portrayed, I mean, it's such a great moment of apostolic bravery, right?
01:03:10
Well, when you take a look at what's omitted, you'll realize, yeah, that was hardly brave compared to what really happened.
01:03:16
Let me tell you real quick what happens after this scene. After this scene, we then cut to the preaching of the first Christian martyr,
01:03:23
Stephen. Well, who knew he actually happened to be Irish? I know it's horrible to say it that way, but apparently
01:03:32
Stephen was actually St. Patrick. That's all I got to say, but during his great speech proclaiming
01:03:39
Christ with the Saul of Tarsus on hand to mock and counter everything he's saying,
01:03:47
Stephen then makes this statement that, again, what are they doing with Jesus' death?
01:03:54
Because statements like this don't jive with what they actually portrayed. Listen in. Jesus is alive.
01:04:00
They tried to kill him, but they failed. Jesus is alive. They tried to kill him, but they failed.
01:04:11
No, I saw what happened in hour number one, and it really looked like they succeeded at killing
01:04:17
Jesus. So you have Peter saying that Jesus did not die. You have Stephen saying they tried to kill
01:04:22
Jesus, but they failed. And you've got these statements that just contradict each other because then there's other statements made by other disciples that say that Jesus rose from the grave, but then you've got the underwhelming statement, oh, he's back.
01:04:38
And so let's just put it this way. The theology regarding Jesus' resurrection in the
01:04:45
History Channel miniseries, the Bible is all over the map.
01:04:51
It's so bad that you can't make heads or tails of it.
01:04:56
Now, I wanted to show you what was missing from the story of Peter and John before the high priest
01:05:03
Caiaphas. Let's take a look at Acts 3. Let's read it in context so we keep the whole story, and we'll look for the parts that were omitted because there's some important stuff in here.
01:05:13
Again, this is kind of a story of what's missing. There's some stuff that's missing, really important stuff that's missing.
01:05:20
It's as if they had no clue that what they were really dealing with was theological diamonds, and they said, ah, those diamonds, who needs those?
01:05:27
Here's a lump of coal, yeah. Anyway, Acts 3, verse 1,
01:05:32
Then Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour, and a man lame from birth being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the beautiful gate, to ask alms of those entering the temple.
01:05:46
Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, now notice here, in the History Channel miniseries, a depiction of this, by the way,
01:05:54
Regina is first on the scene, but she's not mentioned here at all. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.
01:06:01
Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, Look at us. And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them, but Peter said,
01:06:09
I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give you in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
01:06:16
Rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles became strong, and leaping up he stood and began to walk, and entering the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising
01:06:29
God. And all of the people saw him. Now I'm going to point something else out here. The guy they picked to play this lame guy looked like he already had one foot in the grave already, and there was no leaping, there was no praising
01:06:43
God going on. In fact, it was kind of underwhelming. I know, again, it's the little details that are missing that tell the story about what's going wrong with this theology.
01:06:54
Okay, so they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to them. And while he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called
01:07:03
Solomon's, and when Peter saw it, he addressed the people, Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk?
01:07:14
The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant
01:07:19
Jesus whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate when he had decided to release him, but you denied the
01:07:26
Holy and the Righteous One, asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the author of life.
01:07:34
Yeah, those parts of this sermon, this explanation when Peter preached, those parts didn't make it.
01:07:41
The part where you killed the author of life? Yeah, that got cut out. And you killed the author of life whom
01:07:47
God raised from the dead. Now, here, the real apostle Peter is saying that God raised Jesus from the dead.
01:07:53
He never made statements to the effect of Jesus did not die, or as Stephen said, they tried to kill him, but they didn't succeed.
01:08:03
No, here, he's saying these people killed the author of life and that God raised
01:08:09
Jesus from the dead. See, the way the History Channel miniseries is telling the story, they can't line up with the
01:08:16
Bible because there's some kind of a weird, funky, off theology regarding the resurrection that's rattling around inside this thing that's really hard to get a radar fix on because they don't speak coherently and they don't speak, well, consistently regarding what happened to Jesus when he was raised from the grave.
01:08:36
And so we continue. So you killed the author of life whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses, and by faith in his name has made this man strong, whom you see and know.
01:08:48
And the faith that is through Jesus has given the man perfect health in the presence of you all. And now, brothers,
01:08:54
I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your rulers. But what God foretold by the mouth of the prophets that his
01:09:01
Christ should suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent, therefore, and turn back that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the
01:09:12
Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, the Christ, appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which
01:09:21
God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. Moses said, The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.
01:09:28
You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.
01:09:38
That God omitted, too. And all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel to those who came after him also proclaim these days,
01:09:46
You are the sons of the prophets in the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
01:09:54
God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.
01:10:04
Whew! Man, that sermon's almost better than Acts 2. Notice law and gospel, sin and grace, repentance and the forgiveness of sins.
01:10:14
Major theme there in the sermon from Acts chapter 3. And turning from your wickedness.
01:10:20
And anyone who doesn't believe will be destroyed. That message never made it into the Bible, at least
01:10:26
I can't remember a single time where they told anybody that. So again, it's what's missing.
01:10:32
So we continue with the story, Acts chapter 4. And here's what it says. And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the
01:10:40
Sadducees came upon them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
01:10:48
Resurrection from the... See, they were annoyed because they were preaching the resurrection from the dead. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.
01:10:58
But many of those who had heard the word believed and the number of men came to about 5 ,000.
01:11:04
On the next day, the rulers and the elders and the scribes gathered together in Jerusalem with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John Alexander and all who were of the high priestly family.
01:11:15
And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, By what power or by what name did you do this?
01:11:22
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom
01:11:41
God raised from the dead, by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
01:12:04
That got X'd out of the miniseries The Bible too, didn't it? I don't recall
01:12:10
Peter saying that salvation is in no one else and there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
01:12:22
The way the miniseries The Bible handled it, the disciples, they knew that Jesus was really alive and they had a duty to the truth, whatever truth is, some abstract concept of truth.
01:12:37
But Peter himself said Jesus didn't die and Stephen said they tried to kill him but they didn't succeed.
01:12:43
So I don't know what happened to Jesus exactly. I thought they portrayed him as actually being killed but he came back, but I'm not sure if he ever left by the way they're talking about it.
01:12:54
So we continue. So verse 13, Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they were uneducated men, common men, they were astonished and they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
01:13:06
But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, saying,
01:13:16
What shall we do with these men? For that notable sign has been performed through them as evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
01:13:23
We cannot deny it. But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.
01:13:32
So they, notice, don't speak in this name. So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
01:13:40
But Peter and John answered them, Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge.
01:13:50
For we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.
01:13:55
And then they had further threatened them. They let them go, finding no way to punish them because of the people.
01:14:01
For all were praising God for what had happened. For the man on whom the sign of healing was performed was more than 40 years old.
01:14:09
Makes me feel old, right? Yeah, I'm older than 40, but anyway. So notice here that Peter's great big bold statement had nothing to do with some abstract duty to the truth, but had to do with the fact that he's going to listen to God rather than men.
01:14:25
And Peter, in the real account, he proclaims that there's no other name given by which men must be saved than in Jesus Christ.
01:14:34
That got omitted. Jesus, you know, Thomas saying, my Lord and my
01:14:39
God, that got omitted. And Jesus' resurrection is described as, well, he's back, he's back, but Jesus did not die.
01:14:48
They tried to kill him, but they didn't succeed. And again, so it's just one story after another after another that just makes you go, what is going on in this story?
01:15:01
Now, a quick note here, a quick note, one that I, you know, because I've already covered the baptism of Paul to some degree in the
01:15:11
Bible, I just want to make a quick note here and circle back and point something out here that I didn't really highlight the first time through.
01:15:20
Listen to the baptismal formula for the apostle Paul and notice if you notice anything missing.
01:15:26
Listen in. Goliath baptized you,
01:15:32
Paul, in the name of Jesus Christ. For he has chosen you to change the world in his name.
01:15:40
So Paul apparently was baptized not in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but in the name of Jesus Christ.
01:15:48
And then he was called to change the world, whatever that means. It just makes me wonder, because what famous modalist was one of the theological advisors for the
01:16:00
Bible? That would be T .D. Jakes. And do you know that modalists only baptize in the name of Jesus and do not baptize in the name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?
01:16:13
It's true. It's absolutely true. That's how that works. Now, I'm going to fast forward a little bit.
01:16:20
You know, I just point that out and I just wonder, hmm, I wonder if that was like a little nod to T .D.
01:16:26
Jakes. You know, not a Trinitarian baptismal formula, but a, well, modalist baptismal formula, because then later they show
01:16:33
Peter at the centurion's house, and he's baptizing everybody in the name of the
01:16:41
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So you've got both kind of running around in the History Channel miniseries as a depiction of what's going on.
01:16:47
It makes you go, well, that's just weird. Now, here's the last thing
01:16:54
I want to point out, the last thing, and then we'll take our break and we'll come back. We're going to listen to two very good Easter sermons, one from Pastor Samuel Schultheis of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hacienda Heights, California, and the second from Pastor Jeremy Rohde of Faith Lutheran Church in Capistrano Beach, California.
01:17:10
I picked them both because we just listened to their Good Friday sermons on Friday, and I thought it'd be fun to let them do the resolve, if you would.
01:17:22
But anyway, when we fast forward into the story now regarding Paul, Paul has a monologue in the
01:17:32
Bible. And in this monologue, Paul doesn't talk about the great thing that he would, which really was the core central tenet of his theology, salvation by grace alone through faith alone by Christ's work alone.
01:17:46
Yeah, no, that's not the center here. And they show Paul trying to mix in with Christians and they don't trust him because he had been killing him.
01:17:55
And so Paul's way of, his only great theological monologue is him trying to convince other
01:18:03
Christians that he's a Christian by turning 1
01:18:08
Corinthians 13 into a speech that will basically help people trust him.
01:18:14
Yeah, here it is. Listen in. Though I knew what God wanted, as you are certain now, but then
01:18:24
Jesus came to me, not in righteous anger or in judgment, but in love.
01:18:41
Without love, we are nothing. Love is patient.
01:18:49
Love is kind. It is not jealous. It does not boast.
01:18:55
It is not proud. It keeps no records of wrongs.
01:19:01
It rejoices with the truth. It bears all things.
01:19:09
It believes all things. It hopes all things. It endures all things.
01:19:19
When everything else disappears, faith, hope, and love remain.
01:19:26
But the greatest of these is love.
01:19:33
Now, granted, that's just straight out of 1 Corinthians 13. But that's the only thing, the only theological statement that we get from the
01:19:42
Apostle Paul in the Bible. No mention of the
01:19:48
Judaizing heresy, the great theological core of the message of justification by grace through faith from the book of Romans or the book of Galatians.
01:20:01
Yeah, none of that. I mean, it's just love. Yeah, love, yeah, love, love, love, love, love.
01:20:08
So, again, so what ended up on the cutting room floor? What got omitted? The great central teaching of Christianity itself.
01:20:17
Justification by grace alone, through faith alone, by Christ's work alone. Now, I could go on and I could nitpick this thing apart, but I think you get what was really wrong with this week's installment of the
01:20:30
Bible. It's not necessarily what was said, although there were a couple of statements. I mean, I still have no clue what to do with the statement,
01:20:37
Jesus did not die. That was Peter saying. I have no clue what to make of the statement that Stephen made that they tried to kill
01:20:44
Jesus, but they didn't succeed. You know, aside from those couple of statements,
01:20:50
I mean, for the most part, I mean, yeah, there was stuff that was biblical. Yes, there were some additional scenes and some data that really doesn't show up anywhere else in the
01:20:59
Bible. But, again, the big story is not what was said.
01:21:05
The big story is what wasn't said. And if you don't know what wasn't said, then you can't possibly begin to discern what was truly wrong with this week's installment, thankfully the final installment of the
01:21:22
History Channel miniseries, The Bible. So what's the long and the short of it? This miniseries is 10 hours long.
01:21:30
Trust me when I tell you this. You have better things to do with those 10 hours of your life than sit and try to do a
01:21:39
Bible study based on any of this or waste your time watching it. I've gone through this all for you.
01:21:45
You'll have the resource up on YouTube for posterity's sake. As a critique, do
01:21:51
I recommend it? No. Do I strongly advise against it? Yes. This is bad theology from beginning to end.
01:21:59
And whoever put this thing together and whoever their theological advisors are, they have no clue what the core message of Christianity is and they have no clue what the core message of the entire
01:22:12
Bible is. Because as Jesus Christ himself said to the Jews, you diligently search the
01:22:18
Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life. And yet they are the very Scriptures that testify about me.
01:22:25
The Scriptures are about Jesus. And whoever put this movie together and their herd of theological advisors, whoever they were, they are utterly clueless about that fact and clueless about what the
01:22:40
Gospel is and clueless what the central message of Christianity is. And that's why it was missing.
01:22:47
Because if they knew it and believed it, confessed it and taught it, it would have been front and center for all of us to see from beginning to end.
01:22:55
Instead, from beginning to end, it was omitted. It was missing. And the reason it was missing is because they didn't even know that it should be there.
01:23:03
That tells you what's wrong with the Bible. All right. We're up on our second break.
01:23:09
When we come back, we got two very good Easter sermons for you. This will help set the stage for next week, the comparative work.
01:23:17
This is what Easter sermons are supposed to sound like from Pastor Rhody and from Pastor Scholtheis. Stay tuned.
