Modest is hottest. Ever heard that one before? Yeah, it rhymes, and that's about it. The slogan tends to imply that what a man can't see will really get his mind racing, ladies, and if that's the intended effect, we've missed the whole point of modesty.
It also implies that being hot is what's important when our heart's desire should be to glorify God. Instead of going down a list of don'ts, perhaps what we need in our theology is an appreciation of human beauty, the way
God meant for us to enjoy it. Now generally when we talk about modesty, women tend to be the target, but men, this is for you too.
Even guys can behave immodestly. In Genesis 127, God made man in his own likeness, male and female.
He created them, and he looked over everything that he had made and behold, it was very good.
All of it, all the parts of a man are very good. All the parts of a woman are very good. Satan didn't sneak into the garden and start sticking stuff on them that God didn't design.
God made them a certain way for a reason, and it wasn't for them to be ashamed of their bodies. But here's what we need to remember.
There are parts of a man that only his wife gets to see and enjoy. There are parts of a woman that only her husband gets to see and enjoy.
This is how scriptures like Song of Solomon help to shape a theology of beauty. We then become better worshipers of God when we enjoy what he has created in the right way for his glory.
We treat certain parts of the body with greater modesty, not because we're ashamed, but because we honor the
Lord. We are wonderfully made, as all of God's works are wonderful. We know this very well when we understand the text.
