- 00:00
- Jesus Christ, He's our all -in -all, isn't He? And we're talking about that Jesus Christ is the discerner of hearts, the discerner of hearts.
- 00:13
- This is a powerful truth that's found all through the Word of God, but specifically here in the fourth
- 00:20
- Gospel, in John's Gospel. So please turn with me, if you have your Bibles, and open your
- 00:25
- Bibles with me to the Gospel of John, the Gospel of John, chapter 2. In today's message,
- 00:35
- I'm going to conclude this wonderful chapter, not only conclude the sermon, but conclude this chapter.
- 00:45
- And God willing, we'll begin in chapter 3, which really, this is a follow -up, if you look at it in context, it goes right into chapter 3, where we meet a man of the
- 00:59
- Pharisees by the name of Nicodemus. He obviously had to be there at the feast of Passover, and as he went to the temple, and he probably witnessed, more than likely, seeing
- 01:13
- Jesus cleanse the temple. So we will embark on that wonderful chapter,
- 01:21
- Lord willing, next Lord's Day. But the text that's before us today is very hard searching, beloved.
- 01:27
- As I was studying this, I could not help but be very convicted and search my own self.
- 01:33
- As David cried out, search me, O Lord. Try me, test me, and see if there be any wicked way in me.
- 01:40
- That should be the cry of all of our hearts. Because our heart, we really don't know ourselves, we really don't know our sin as God sees it.
- 01:50
- And that's why we have the Word of God. Actually, R .C. Sproul said this, the gospel is only good news when we understand the bad news.
- 02:02
- Let me say that again, the gospel is only good news when we understand the bad news.
- 02:09
- So many times you hear a lot about the love of God, but very seldom do you hear about God's wrath,
- 02:16
- God's holy righteousness, His justice. He's holy, holy, holy.
- 02:22
- Even in heaven right now, the church triumphant sings and praises
- 02:29
- God before the thrice holy God. And they praise
- 02:35
- Him and say, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty. It's not mercy, mercy, mercy.
- 02:41
- Even though God's merciful, it's not love, love, love, even though God is loving. God is all those great things, but everything about God and all of His attributes,
- 02:51
- His love, His mercy, His grace, His kindness, His patience, it's all holy, isn't it?
- 02:58
- It's holy love, it's holy justice, it's holy mercy. So keep that in mind as we look at our text today, because it being so heart -searching for every one of us, and especially to this preacher,
- 03:15
- I'll just stand amazed when I went through these scriptures and I said, Lord, search me out.
- 03:22
- But God always wants to search us out by His Holy Spirit through the Word of God to expose our sin so that the sin can be dealt with, you see.
- 03:31
- That the remedy would be applied. And the remedy is the gospel. That's the remedy.
- 03:38
- But we must present the bad news in order to understand truly what the good news is.
- 03:46
- So, the verses before us we're looking at speaks of God being all knowing that Jesus Christ is
- 03:53
- God, the second person of the Trinity, and that's already been established, hasn't it? In chapter 1.
- 03:59
- That Jesus Christ is deity. And He came and was tabernacled among us.
- 04:07
- The Word, the Word, the Logos, became flesh and dwelt among us, pitched
- 04:14
- His tent with us, and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten
- 04:19
- Father, full of grace and truth. And now, that's in chapter 1, verse 14.
- 04:24
- And now here we come, we went through all of chapter 1, and now pretty much all the way to chapter 2.
- 04:32
- We have seen Jesus, all focused on Jesus. It's all about Christ, isn't it?
- 04:38
- It's Christ and Christ alone. So, as we come to this text, Jesus is the discerner of all hearts, of all people.
- 04:45
- He knows all men. He knows our motives. He knows all the intents of the hearts.
- 04:53
- He searches us out. So, chapter 2, let's look at three verses.
- 04:59
- Verse 23 to verse 25, hear the word of the living
- 05:06
- God. Now, when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which
- 05:14
- He did. But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
- 05:31
- May God richly bless the reading of His word from the hearing of our ears to our hearts this morning.
- 05:39
- Please bow with me in a moment of prayer as we seek the Lord's face and His blessing within this hour of worship.
- 05:49
- Our Father in heaven, holy is Your name, glorious is
- 05:56
- Your name, but above all, Your name is holy. And Lord, we thank You for Your goodness. Your goodness is holy.
- 06:05
- So good and kind You are, but yet just so powerful, all -knowing, all -powerful, ever -present.
- 06:16
- Lord, help us within this hour to take our focus on any of our problems that may come to our minds, and may our minds be wholly seeking
- 06:32
- Your face. Lord, we thank You for Your word this morning. Your word alone is truth.
- 06:39
- And Lord, we pray that by Your Holy Spirit that You will sanctify us through and through, through and through by Your words.
- 06:48
- Transform us, cleanse us, make us, break us. In the end, Lord, I pray that You use us for Your honor and for Your glory.
- 06:58
- And we would ask this in Jesus' name, the name that is above all names, Amen and Amen.
- 07:06
- This is a very short and powerful verse that's before us, a very brief passage, and it's packed full of powerful truths, life -changing truths.
- 07:20
- Actually, Hebrews chapter 4, verse 11 through 13 says this about the written word, concerns
- 07:28
- God's written word. Jesus is the living word, but you cannot separate the two.
- 07:35
- The written word says this, the writer of Hebrews, let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
- 07:50
- And then he says this statement about the word of God, for the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two -edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow.
- 08:04
- And notice what he says here, and is a discerner, a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
- 08:13
- And there's no creature hidden from His sight. So sobering, isn't it? There's no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.
- 08:29
- So in short, what he's saying is the word of God discovers our true condition. We don't know our true condition, no one knows our true condition, and we think somehow there's inherent good within us, but when you start reading the
- 08:42
- Bible, it's very clear that men are totally depraved. Actually, when
- 08:47
- Martin Luther speaks of this verse here, the great reformer, he said this, the
- 08:56
- Bible is alive, it speaks to me, it has feet, it runs after me, it has hands, it lays a hold of me.
- 09:08
- And how true that is, amen. The word of God is actually, if you notice the text, the writer of Hebrews says, it is even sharper.
- 09:18
- A two -edged sword is sharp, but think about what he's saying here. It is sharper, it's even sharper than a two -edged sword.
- 09:26
- It is a two -edged sword, but it's even sharper. While the word of God can give great comfort to us, and it does, and our hardships, and our trials, and afflictions, and all that we go through, great comfort.
- 09:41
- There's no other greater place that we can go than to the word of God, than to know that God gives great comfort.
- 09:51
- Psalm 23, the Lord is my shepherd, all that I want, I shall not want.
- 09:58
- No greater place to go than Psalm 23, just six verses packed with great comfort, especially when one's at their death, and they're on their deathbed.
- 10:10
- We've been there, it brings comfort and nourishment to our souls, doesn't it? But, it's to those who believe, and also, but also there's another side of it, it's a two -edged sword.
- 10:22
- It may bring comfort and nourishment to our souls, but it's also a tool of judgment and execution for those who have not committed themselves to the
- 10:32
- Lord Jesus Christ. And again, you always have those two sides of the word of God.
- 10:40
- One Puritan said it this way, it comforts the afflicted, but it afflicts the comfortable. It has a razor sharp, two -edged sword.
- 10:52
- Scripture says it's sharper. In other words, it cuts, it exposes our shallow beliefs, and even our false intentions and motives, and I'm so aren't you glad it does, because it literally, that's how much
- 11:06
- God really loves us. He warns us, and He wants to cut a good surgeon, a good doctor, when he is trying to remove something, a cancer, so to speak, he will operate and cut to the core, and to get and remove the cancer, or whatever it may be, that is diseasing the body.
- 11:29
- A good doctor will do that, and then after it's done, the operation, the surgeon, after the sword, and the cutting, and the knife, and then there's the sewing up, and the healing process.
- 11:42
- And that's the way the Word of God is. It also pierces, it pierces, as actually as it cuts, it pierces to the division of soul and spirit, and it says of the joints and the marrow.
- 11:54
- In other words, it's a discerner of the thoughts and the intents of the very heart.
- 12:00
- Think of that. There's nothing else as powerful as the Word of God that can cut to the very core of our hearts, to our tensions, to our intentions, our motives, our very thoughts.
- 12:17
- And each of us is judged not only by the Word of God, but Jesus said this in John 12, 48, even though the written
- 12:24
- Word judges us, and it will judge us on the last day as we stand before Him.
- 12:30
- Jesus said this about the judgment. He who rejects me and does not receive my words has that which judges him.
- 12:38
- The word which I have spoken will judge him in the last day. Notice what he says.
- 12:44
- Will judge him. We will all stand one on one. Just no one else will be there on the judgment day as you stand before God to give an account before the
- 12:58
- Creator and the Savior. Judgment is actually, the Father has passed,
- 13:05
- Jesus has appointed Jesus to be the judge of judges. He will judge the entire human race, folks.
- 13:11
- All the way from Adam to the very last person that will ever be born, whenever that will be in the future.
- 13:19
- That's incredible. That's billions of people. Think of that. And He's going to call them all up on the resurrection day.
- 13:28
- And many that are lost, and there will be more than lost because Jesus made it very clear that many will go into the broad road of destruction.
- 13:36
- Many. But very few will go enter into the straight and narrow gate. That's very sobering. But that's the words of Jesus.
- 13:44
- So God's Word judges us, doesn't it? And that's a very sobering thing. As I set this before you, as I was examining my own heart,
- 13:51
- I said, Lord, You know the feeling as well as I do. We have all fallen so short, more than just fallen short with mistakes, but we have sinned against the
- 14:00
- Lord. But it's so wonderful because as you see this, and the backdrop, that God's wrath abides on such sinful human beings as us that deliberately disobey and hate
- 14:14
- God with a hatred. And a lot of people say, What do you know? I don't hate God. Well, they haven't really searched their heart.
- 14:20
- Naturally, we are born with an endemic nature that has a rebellion against God. I've used this illustration so many times.
- 14:27
- But as children are born into this world, as precious and sweet looking they are with angelic faces, within their heart is a seed of rebellion, folks.
- 14:37
- Think of that. You never teach that. I've had five children, and some of them are here today.
- 14:44
- Three of them are here today. My boys are not here. But that's why parents are given the great responsibility and the privilege to train up a child in the way that they should go, to teach them.
- 14:56
- And that goes, that we must teach them the word of God, the truth. We never teach them to follow their own hearts and inclinations because that will lead them right into hell on a wayward way.
- 15:06
- But my illustration is this. You never have to teach a child to say no. Even the little ones.
- 15:13
- You know parents, what I'm talking about, that's had children. It comes naturally. No. That's when you have to start getting out the little rod and okay, you've got to teach them.
- 15:27
- You don't say no to your daddy and your mommy. It's a natural inclination. So we're all born naturally, conceived with that Adamic nature.
- 15:39
- This is why Jesus is the unique person because born of a virgin, He did not carry with Him the
- 15:45
- Adamic nature. He did not have that Adamic nature. It was separate. He was conceived of the
- 15:51
- Holy Spirit in the womb of the virgin. So Jesus one day will judge all the world.
- 15:59
- And Himself, He's the judge of judges and the King of kings and the Lord of lords. And the scripture says every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is
- 16:07
- Lord to the glory of God the Father. That's going to happen. So we're all going to be accountable to the living and the written word of God who is its author.
- 16:21
- Turn with me very quickly. Let's look at something in John chapter 6 as we just turn a few pages down.
- 16:27
- We're heading through the book of the gospel. John's incredibly powerful. But I'd like for you to see this situation here that happened in John 6.
- 16:39
- Look at me in just a few verses. Chapter 6.
- 16:47
- Look at the beginning of verse 60. And I want you to see that this is a day that many disciples turned away from the
- 16:53
- Lord and started to fall away. Verse 60 says,
- 17:00
- Therefore many, notice that many of His disciples when they heard this, and what they heard, basically
- 17:07
- Jesus was saying that whoever eats my flesh in verse 54 and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day.
- 17:16
- For my flesh is food indeed, my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him.
- 17:25
- As the living Father sent me, I live because of the Father. So he who feeds on me will live because of me.
- 17:32
- And this is the bread which came down from heaven not as your father ate the manna and are dead.
- 17:38
- He who eats this bread will live forever. Very powerful. And then he says, and notice what he says, many of the disciples when they heard this said, this is a hard saying.
- 17:47
- Who can understand it? And then when Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, now you notice that He knew.
- 17:58
- He knew their intentions. He knew their motives. And they complained about this and He said to them, does this offend you?
- 18:06
- Notice the question that the Lord gives to them. Does this offend you? He knew it offended them.
- 18:11
- He knew the answer was yes. Of course it offended them. Did Jesus compromise with them?
- 18:21
- Notice the questions He asked. And then again He asked another question. What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before?
- 18:29
- Ascend to the throne. And then He says this powerful statement. It is the
- 18:35
- Spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are
- 18:40
- Spirit and they are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.
- 18:46
- Notice these are the so -called disciples following Him. They really did not have the true belief.
- 18:52
- But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning. No, here it is. The omniscience of Christ.
- 18:58
- He knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe and who would betray
- 19:05
- Him. And He said, Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.
- 19:12
- A powerful statement as we have been looking at this morning on the doctrines of grace. This is actually an icebreaker of laying the foundation.
- 19:21
- He was talking about the sovereignty of God. And here it is. One of those great verses. Jesus said,
- 19:28
- Therefore I have said to you that no one, no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.
- 19:36
- Sovereignty of God and salvation. And notice this in verse 66. From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.
- 19:47
- Then Jesus said to the twelve, the core group, Do you also want to go away?
- 19:54
- Wow. Listen to that question. But, aren't you glad of that but?
- 20:02
- But Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go?
- 20:08
- Where are we going to go? To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
- 20:16
- You know what Peter is actually saying? You are our only hope. This is the way it must be when we come to Jesus Christ.
- 20:23
- And as the Father would grant that and His sovereignty, that we would see Jesus as our only hope, folks.
- 20:30
- Not just the best hope, but the only hope. Lord, to whom shall we go?
- 20:38
- You have the words of eternal life. And also we have come to believe and know that You are the
- 20:43
- Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the Living God. And Jesus answered them,
- 20:50
- Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is the devil?
- 20:58
- And He spoke, verse 71, of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray
- 21:05
- Him, being one of the twelve. One of His very handpicked apostles.
- 21:14
- It's amazing. But that text gives great insight on Jesus is the discerner of our hearts.
- 21:24
- Now, as we look at our text, these great truths, we keep in mind verse 23, back to John 2.
- 21:32
- Look at verse 23. Now, when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, and the
- 21:37
- Scripture tells us, many believed in His name when they saw the signs, the miracles, in other words, which
- 21:43
- He did. They were following Him for the wrong intentions, the wrong motives, the wrong reasons.
- 21:50
- So, we know, during His stay there in Jerusalem, we looked at this, last Lord's Day, He performed a number of miracles which are not recorded in the
- 21:58
- Scripture, because there are so many of them that He did. And John actually says at the end of the book, if they were recorded, the books could not contain them.
- 22:07
- So, He did other miracles there in Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover. So, John says, many believed in His name, many believed, but for the wrong reasons, of course.
- 22:19
- This belief, this faith, so -called beliefs, this so -called faith was a shallow, superficial faith.
- 22:26
- It was really not a living, dynamic faith that God grants to those who truly believe and love the
- 22:35
- Lord Jesus Christ. It is a faith that they follow Jesus just for the benefits, just for the supernatural, just for the miraculous, the spectacular.
- 22:45
- It was not a saving faith. And it's very obvious here that it's not a saving faith, because verse 24, but Jesus says this, but Jesus did not commit
- 22:56
- Himself to them because He knew all men. That's the reason why He did not commit
- 23:01
- Himself to them. Though they believed in Jesus, Jesus did not believe in them. He had no faith in their superficial faith.
- 23:09
- Many believed in Jesus, verse 28, but Jesus did not commit Himself to them. These were unsaved believers.
- 23:18
- They had a false profession. They had a false faith because they were believing for the wrong reasons, the wrong motives, and they were not following the
- 23:26
- Lord Jesus Christ out of a love and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 23:32
- Now, although many claimed to believe, there was always a claim, Jesus knew that mere intellectual knowledge about God proves nothing.
- 23:43
- Why? Why? Well, as we looked at last week, again, from James chapter 2, verse 19, the
- 23:52
- Bible even says, James says, you believe that there's one God, you do well.
- 23:58
- It's almost like He's saying, big deal. Even the demons believe and they tremble.
- 24:05
- Wow. What a powerful verse. Isn't that so revealing? Isn't that so revealing?
- 24:11
- Even the fallen angels, and actually, if you think of it, the demons that here are among us, they're real aliens, if you want to really look at an alien.
- 24:20
- They're fallen angelic beings that's come to this world. And I have, a lot of people have asked me questions about this, about in the supernatural realm, and the people that believe in the spooks and superstitious and all this, and people that they've seen from the past and stuff.
- 24:39
- Did you know demons can actually make themselves look and appear as people?
- 24:49
- Scripture even says, an angel of light, they appear as an angel of light.
- 24:56
- They appear as an angel of light. And Paul even made it clear that even if an angel from heaven, not a false angel, but a fallen angel, even if an angel came from heaven were to preach any other gospel, let him be accursed.
- 25:13
- Wow. So we're not to put our faith, even if an angelic being were to come and preach another gospel, and that's actually how the cults have come into play and come into being, is because of angelic beings coming to them, and the people that saw this believed and were deceived.
- 25:36
- The demons believe. What is he saying? In other words, what he's saying, it's not enough for us to be orthodox about God, just to know about God.
- 25:46
- We must know God personally. We must know God intimately. And greater than that, just not knowing
- 25:54
- God should be our, that is the focal point, because Jesus is, that they may know, he prays in John 17, that they may know thee, the only true
- 26:03
- God in Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. But also at the judgment day, many will stand before him and confess,
- 26:10
- Lord, Lord, did not we do these things, these miracles and these prophecies, I prophesied in your name, we did miracles in your name, and we cast out demons in your name.
- 26:19
- And then Jesus will have a profession to give to them. I never knew you.
- 26:25
- Depart from me, you workers of iniquity. I believe that is the most tragic words found in the scriptures.
- 26:32
- It's the words we do not want to hear after we pass out of this life into eternity. We want to hear, well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the
- 26:42
- Lord. So really, knowing God is first and foremost, but does
- 26:47
- Jesus know us? Does God know us? And I'm not talking about just know about us, because he knows everything about us.
- 26:53
- I'm talking about intimacy. Does he know you? Are you known of him?
- 27:03
- Really, in the last, that's all that's going to matter. Does he know you and do you know him?
- 27:10
- It's not enough, folks, to be orthodox, and actually Thomas Watson said this, the light of the truth just becomes a torch to light people to hell.
- 27:20
- That's scary. That's terrifying. It's tragic because I know people today, as I'm speaking to you from this pulpit, that are actually deceived in their own sins and think that they're going to heaven, but they're on their way to hell.
- 27:36
- Because, well, who made you the judge? Pastor? I'm not the judge. The scripture says, you know them by their fruits,
- 27:44
- Jesus said. In other words, and that's what the book of James is all about. It's not enough just to acknowledge that there's a
- 27:50
- God. The demons know that there's a God. They even know about the theology and all about God much more than us.
- 27:58
- And Tozer said, he says, actually the devil's a greater theologian than any of us, and he's a devil still.
- 28:06
- It's not enough just to know about God. Again, even the fallen angels that were cast out of heaven know about the truth of God.
- 28:14
- They know about Christ. They know about the Holy Spirit. And tragically, they are on their way to perdition.
- 28:21
- There are many people, even within the evangelical circles and within our circles in which we know, that think that they're on their way to heaven and yet they're on their way to eternal damnation and hell because of deception.
- 28:36
- But the Bible wants to expose by the love and tell us how we can search ourselves, how we can test the spirits to see whether they're of God, to examine ourselves to see if we're in the faith, how we can come to know the truth and the truth will make you free.
- 28:57
- This is so important. Well, many, many professing
- 29:02
- Christians know all about these great truths and yet in their sins and serving sin and Satan.
- 29:12
- Well, Pastor, that sounds like an oxymoron. It sounds like an apparent contradiction, doesn't it? But it does to us, but not to God.
- 29:19
- So, as I read in Hebrews chapter 4, anybody can deceive others and put on a good front on the outside, but what about the inside?
- 29:29
- That's where it really matters, doesn't it? Our heart. And the word of God deals with the heart more than anything.
- 29:38
- It deals with the heart, the mind, the soul, but the heart is the issue. God knows the hearts of all men.
- 29:47
- Jesus is the discerner of all hearts. He searches the hearts. Listen to these scriptures that I bring before you.
- 29:56
- Jeremiah chapter 17, verse 9 and 10. The heart is deceitful above all things and is desperately wicked.
- 30:04
- Who can know it? Listen to that question. Who can know it? Yeah, but some people say,
- 30:10
- I thought I was really a good person. I hear somebody, he had such a good heart. No, the
- 30:16
- Bible says actually the heart is deceitful above all things.
- 30:24
- Listen to that. And desperately wicked. Wicked. Even on the outside, people that do good deeds do it sometimes for wrong motives and a lot of times for wrong motives, but that they may be seen a man or that they may get some accolade, they don't do it for the glory of God, do they?
- 30:46
- Beloved, I'm telling you, we need to think again. And this is what deceived people say about us.
- 30:51
- So men interpret the definition of what goodness is and righteousness is, but what about God's interpretation of goodness and righteousness?
- 31:00
- What good is? That reminds me of the story of the rich young ruler that comes to Jesus and he said, good master, good master.
- 31:10
- And he comes to Jesus and actually if you think of it, Jesus was good, but Jesus immediately caught his flattering while he was trying to flatter
- 31:21
- Jesus about goodness and he said, why call us, Jesus responds, why call us good? There's only one good and that's
- 31:27
- God. So he was actually pointing him to the Father and then he gives him the truth. Then he walks away and scripture says, as he walked away and denied what
- 31:38
- Jesus told him that what he must do to have eternal life, he didn't like it because it basically was the cost of discipleship and Jesus looked at him and loved him.
- 31:50
- But you know, think of what the text here says. Who can know it? Verse 10,
- 31:58
- God himself answers his own question through the prophet. Listen to what he says. In verse 10,
- 32:04
- I the Lord, Yahweh, search the heart. I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.
- 32:13
- So by the Lord, the Yahweh, the actions are weighed. 1 Samuel 2 3
- 32:22
- Listen to this. Talk no more so very proudly. Let no arrogance come from your mouth for the
- 32:29
- Lord, Yahweh, is the God of knowledge and by him actions are weighed. Listen to Job 10 13 -16.
- 32:38
- Job 10 13 -16 And these things you have hidden in your heart. I know that this was with you.
- 32:46
- If I sin, if I sin, then you mark me and will not acquit me of my iniquity.
- 32:54
- If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I cannot lift up my head.
- 33:01
- I am full of disgrace. See my misery. And if my head is exalted, you hunt me like a fierce lion.
- 33:10
- And again, you show yourself awesome against me in the light of God's presence.
- 33:17
- Psalm 1 1 6 The whole introduction psalm to the whole book of all the 150 psalms of the
- 33:26
- Psalter. The Lord, Yahweh, knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
- 33:34
- Psalm 69 5 O God, you know my foolishness and my sins are not hidden from you.
- 33:40
- Psalm 90 verse 8 You have set your iniquities before you. And listen to this.
- 33:46
- Our secret sins in the light of your countenance. And all sin, see get this, all sin is clear in view before the face of God.
- 33:57
- Nothing escapes the eye of God. Psalm 139 1 -6 as we all know that wonderful chapter.
- 34:04
- He says this, O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up.
- 34:10
- You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.
- 34:17
- And there is not a word on my tongue. But behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You have hedged me behind and before and laid your hand upon me.
- 34:27
- Such knowledge is too wonderful for me. It is high. I cannot attain it.
- 34:34
- It just goes right into, David goes right into worship of the greatness of the knowledge. All knowledge, all knowing, searching, beaming eye of God that tries him.
- 34:46
- And he goes right into worship. Such knowledge is too wonderful. I cannot attain it.
- 34:53
- Listen to Proverbs 5 -21 As Solomon says to the spirit, For the ways of man are before the eyes of the
- 35:01
- Lord. And he ponders or observes, weighs all his paths.
- 35:08
- Ecclesiastes chapter 12 That last chapter and the last verses of that book of wisdom in chapter 12 verse 13 -14
- 35:18
- Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter. Fear God and keep His commandments. For this is man's all.
- 35:24
- For God will bring every work into judgment including every secret thing whether good or evil.
- 35:33
- Now if we don't know the Lord and don't know the Lord Jesus Christ that could be a terrifying thing folks.
- 35:39
- And actually it is. The scripture says in Hebrews, the writer of Hebrews says it's a terrifying, terrifying, a fearful thing to fall in the hands of the living
- 35:49
- God. It should be terrifying. Jeremiah 16 -17
- 36:00
- The prophet says as God speaks through him, For my eyes are on all their ways and they are not hidden from my eyes.
- 36:11
- So many other scriptures. Daniel has a list of them. The prophets speak of the all -knowing presence and omniscience of God.
- 36:21
- Hosea chapter 7 verse 2 They do not consider their hearts that I remember all their wickedness.
- 36:28
- Now their own deeds have surrounded them. They are before my face. Nothing escapes the eye of God.
- 36:38
- Luke chapter 12 You can turn there with me if you like but the first three verses, this is
- 36:45
- Jesus actually warning the disciples and those around him beware of the hypocrisy of the eleven of the
- 36:54
- Pharisees. It says in verse 1, In the meantime, when an innumerable multitude of people had gathered together so that they trampled one another.
- 37:01
- Such a great crowd there. And he began to say to his disciples first of all, to his disciples,
- 37:08
- Beware of the eleven of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. Play acting. Everything that they did was externalism.
- 37:19
- Wrong motives as well. They prayed for wrong motives. They prayed not to please God or to be seen of God in the secret place but they prayed to be seen of men.
- 37:28
- The accolades of men that they would have the praises of men. Jesus says, For there is nothing covered in verse 2
- 37:34
- Nothing covered that will not be revealed. Nothing hidden that will not be known. Verse 3,
- 37:41
- Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light and whatever you have spoken in the ear in the inner room will be proclaimed on the housetops.
- 37:52
- It will be revealed in the last days. And Jesus goes on to say this and speaking about this,
- 38:00
- Jesus teaches on the fear of God in verse 4, But I say to you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more than that they can do.
- 38:11
- But I show you whom you should fear. Fear him who after he has killed has the power to cast into hell.
- 38:19
- Yes, I say to you, fear him. And then he gives a great comfort right after that.
- 38:26
- He says, Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins and not one of them is forgotten before God?
- 38:33
- In other words, he teaches the healthy fear of God that God knows all things and fear
- 38:40
- God first of all then he says that God cares for you.
- 38:45
- He loves you with a great care. Because he gives an illustration and think of this, this is incredible but the all knowing of God is the very hairs of your head are numbered are all numbered.
- 38:57
- Do not fear, therefore you are of more value than many sparrows. Do you know what Jesus is actually saying?
- 39:03
- When you truly fear God and see the heavenly father for who he is, he who knows the most about you loves you the most as well.
- 39:13
- Isn't that great consolation? It should not be a terrifying thing if we know
- 39:19
- God as our father and we are adopted as children of God into his kingdom and he knows us and loves us but he has a great care for us.
- 39:28
- And Peter says, that's why you can cast all your care on him before he cares for you.
- 39:35
- The great care of God that you mean something to him and he loves you even though you are depraved and even though people are outside of his kingdom
- 39:45
- God has a great love. The capacity of his love is enormous and it's a holy love by the way.
- 39:54
- And I like to put the holy on it because there is nothing like it that can be even compared to his love on this world.
- 40:05
- You could go on and on with these verses. There are so many verses that speak of this. 1
- 40:12
- Corinthians 4, 5 Therefore judge nothing before the time until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the motives of the heart.
- 40:23
- Then each one's praise will come from God. Isn't that great? So Jesus is really looking at our inner motives, our inner thoughts, our attitudes which
- 40:35
- God himself can only know. And at the judgment seat of Jesus Christ where believers will be judged according to our works whether they be good or bad that's what the
- 40:44
- Bible says. He's just not going to judge us of our outward service which is part of it but he's going to judge us to our inward devotion.
- 40:54
- Why we did it. Did we serve in order that we loved
- 40:59
- God and loved people and loved our neighbor the first and great command. And there will be many that day on the judgment day that this is what
- 41:10
- Paul speaks of in chapter 3 that many when the fire of God's judgment will be put to the test of all the works that we have done as believers the fire will burn everything above the ground which is wood, hay and stubble and will be ashes but everything that is precious gold, silver which is under the ground which is not seen but is seen before the eye of God those are the ones that God will point out as a great, great reward because they did it unto
- 41:43
- God because of love of God. I hear Paul Washer say this all the time and I'm thinking wow,
- 41:51
- I know where he's going on this because he speaks of the glory of God and doing all to the glory of God and he's basing that upon 1
- 41:58
- Corinthians 10 31 therefore whatever you eat or drink and whatever you do do all to the glory of God even if it's drinking a drink of water as Paul Washer says give a cup of water in the
- 42:14
- Lord's name those little things matter to God well
- 42:19
- Jesus knows everything about us doesn't he? He's the all knowing Christ He knows all men
- 42:24
- He knows our intents of our hearts our thoughts our deeds, our motives whether it be good or bad done in light done in darkness whether it be out in the open whether it be in secret
- 42:34
- He knows there's nothing that escapes the all seeing eye of God whether it be seen in public or secretly
- 42:40
- God knows and Jesus Christ knew all men therefore He did not need anyone to testify concerning men because He knew what was in man
- 42:50
- He knew what was in man because He knew the true state of man and every heart as we looked at previously
- 42:58
- He saw Nathaniel Bartholomew at the heart of an honest true seeker of God He saw that this man had no guile that doesn't mean he was perfect but He knew his intent his heart
- 43:11
- He knew he was a seeker after God and Jesus met him and brought him in as a disciple isn't that wonderful?
- 43:19
- a mere outward attraction of the miraculous and spectacular would not do folks genuine authentic real saving faith goes far far beyond just the spectacular doesn't it?
- 43:32
- actually the same Greek word with believe is at the end there commit
- 43:38
- Jesus did not commit or believe in them it's the same word at the beginning so this gives us an excellent picture of what saving faith actually looks like and you see this defined in Ephesians chapter 2 don't you?
- 43:54
- let me read Ephesians 2 isn't it a great chapter there? you could go with me there great great chapter let me read a few verses look at verse 1 all the way to verse 13 and you
- 44:08
- He made alive only God can make alive only the word of God can make alive but actually that's what the scripture says that we are brought into the kingdom by the living word of God He said you are made alive who were dead in trespasses and sins in which you once walked according to the course of this world according to the prince and the power of the air the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience among whom you also we all once conducted ourselves in the lust of our flesh fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind and were by nature children of wrath just as the others but God the gospel
- 44:47
- Martin Lloyd Jones says you could put these two words as the entire gospel but God, God intervened in His sovereignty but God who is rich in mercy because of His great love with which
- 45:02
- He loved us even when we were dead in trespasses made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved and has raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus that in the ages to come
- 45:17
- He might show His exceeding riches of His grace and His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus and then
- 45:23
- He says this for by grace you have been saved through faith faith is that gift of God, this is what
- 45:29
- He's talking about through faith that not of yourselves it is the gift of God not of works lest anyone should boast for we are
- 45:40
- His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them there's the practical application there's the obedience, there's the sanctification after regeneration when there's justification, sanctification always follows beloved always you cannot separate the two even though they are different in a kind so there you have what salvation is all about great salvation that God the
- 46:13
- Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit was all involved in in the redemption as in creation it is a
- 46:19
- Trinitarian work but God's greatest work was done in redemption
- 46:26
- William Tyndale said this about law and gospel Tyndale was a great man of God translated the word of God into English the law and the gospel are two keys the law is the key which shutteth up men under condemnation and the gospel is the key which opens the door and lets them out.
- 46:47
- Isn't that great? Wonderful. The law discovers our disease, Luther said, and the gospel applies the remedy by faith in Jesus Christ so it's important that we understand clearly the bad news in order to understand the good news as R .C.
- 47:02
- says in one verse, Romans 6 23 tells us this there's two absolutes in this verse for the wages of sin sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our
- 47:17
- Lord there you have the whole gospel two absolutes in one verse the first absolute is spiritual death spiritual death is the paycheck for every man's slavery to sin second, eternal life is the free sovereign gift of God to undeserving sinners who repent and believe the gospel.
- 47:41
- There you have those two great absolutes I like what
- 47:46
- Pastor MacArthur says if anyone anyone will accept a
- 47:51
- Jesus that will give you all you want that's not a hard sell how about the
- 47:59
- Jesus who takes everything from you he said try that what about Job, you see a man that feared
- 48:07
- God, what an example he feared God, there was no one like him on the face of the earth at that time he feared
- 48:16
- God and you know the story in chapter 1 he didn't know what was going on in the heavenlies but we have that revelation and he was stripped of everything folks, he was stripped of he lost all ten children at once he lost all of his possession he lost all his children he lost all of his servants he lost everything that he actually had because God permitted
- 48:38
- Satan to get at him and God says you only can go so far that shows you the sovereignty of God and even
- 48:45
- Satan says you have a hedge about him, so God hedged him and God dropped the hedge but what
- 48:50
- I'm saying is God knew that Job would pass the test and there was lessons for Job even at the end because of his friends that supposedly came to him and as Pharisees did, at the first week they were okay, they didn't open their mouth right, in his grief they sat down with him they grieved with him but when they started opening their mouth and they said great things really they said truths about God but it wasn't really a consolation to Job and Job struggled with that and at the end, when
- 49:27
- Job prayed for his friends God turned everything around and he passed the test isn't that wonderful but Job was a
- 49:34
- God fearing man but think of it, God stripped him but yet, what did he do after he got stripped and look at verse 1 he falls to his face, he shaves his head which was a custom in that day and he says the
- 49:45
- Lord gives and the Lord takes away blessed be the name of the Lord he worships and folks
- 49:51
- I know how hard that must be when we lose those who are nearest to us and we love so much and those that we are brothers and sisters and even babies that God takes and we don't know the reasons we don't know but we know that God is good and that's what
- 50:09
- Job, Job didn't understand what was going on but he fell to his face and he worshipped the Lord and he loved
- 50:16
- Him because God knew his heart his heart you know when
- 50:27
- God takes everything from us we love Him we love
- 50:32
- Him the law it's summarized the law says be righteous the verdict says no one can be righteous the gospel says
- 50:45
- Jesus is our righteousness isn't that wonderful we can't be good enough if we could, we'd have to be perfect to earn our way to heaven and by the way, that's exactly what
- 50:59
- Jesus did He earned the way to heaven for you and me
- 51:06
- He is the perfect son of God He committed no sin, every thought every intent, everything in His heart
- 51:13
- He fulfilled the law perfectly He upheld it to its finest detail and no one else could do this
- 51:22
- I love what John Bunyan put, he put it like this in a poem and it's so simple even a child can understand, he said run
- 51:29
- John run, we're familiar with that aren't we run John run but listen to what he says the law commands but gives neither feet nor hands better news the gospel brings it bids me fly and it gives me wings the law commands but gives neither feet nor hands better news the gospel brings it bids me fly and gives me wings so the message of the gospel is all summed up that Jesus Christ is the one that paid the ultimate price for salvation, we had nothing to do with that just like you have nothing to do with Adam falling, but Jesus turned everything around He reverses the curse that's upon all of humanity
- 52:23
- He's the last Adam, you got the first Adam, only those representatives in the whole entire human race you're dead in sin or you're freed from sin in Christ, you're dead in sin in Adam, you're freed from sin in Jesus Christ Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe sin had left the crimson stain,
- 52:44
- He washed it white as snow, Jesus paid it all, He paid the price and the
- 52:51
- Bible actually says that we are to repent and believe the gospel, Mark 1 14 15 says this, now after John the
- 52:59
- Baptist was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee preaching the gospel the kingdom of God and saying the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand repent and believe the gospel the first thing we see here is the time is fulfilled think of that, this is the arrival of the
- 53:16
- King Himself, Jesus the Messiah, the fullness of time had come, Galatians 4 4, for when the fullness of time had come,
- 53:24
- God sent forth His Son born of a woman, born under the law what did He do? what did
- 53:29
- He do? He did this to redeem those, to buy them back to redeem those who were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons, there is redemption in God's timetable and His sovereignty
- 53:42
- He sent forth His one and only Son for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life, that word perish
- 53:54
- He takes away the sting of death of spiritual death and eternity where people go those who refuse to come to Jesus Christ they harden their hearts and they end up going into a separation abyss and hell eternal where there is a punishment forever that the wrath of God is upon them forever and ever and folks this is what
- 54:23
- Jesus took when He died on the cross He took that sin, He took that punishment now we see this in Romans 8 -3 for what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh
- 54:36
- God did, God did it by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh on account of sin
- 54:44
- He condemned sin in the flesh that the righteous requirements of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the
- 54:54
- Spirit so the kingdom of God has come the time is fulfilled and it's still here second, not only is the time fulfilled and the kingdom has come the kingdom of God is at hand this is why
- 55:14
- Jesus said in Matthew 6 -33 seek first, seek first above everything seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and God will take care of all the rest of our needs won't
- 55:25
- He don't worry about that, that's secondary God loves you, He loves His children Jesus gave an illustration, you never see a sparrow fall unless the
- 55:34
- Father notices it and that's why He says even the hairs of your head are numbered because He cares about you seek
- 55:40
- God's kingdom first and His righteousness, God's kingdom is God's sovereign rule over the sphere of salvation and the only way to come into the kingdom is by being born again, the second birth and that's actually where the text takes us in John chapter 3 where we meet
- 55:55
- Nicodemus and Jesus says to him verily, verily, truly, truly I say unto you, unless one is born again born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God third is, not only the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand the command of the charge from the
- 56:11
- Lord Jesus Christ is repent and believe the gospel that's what's really important we better make sure that we repent we turn away from our sins we turn from sin and we turn toward God and that is found actually in Acts 20
- 56:29
- Acts 20 a very familiar verse you see it Paul is speaking to the elders there and notice what he says verse 20 how
- 56:42
- I kept nothing back verse 20, a helper but proclaimed to you and taught you publicly and from house to house testifying to the
- 56:52
- Jews and also the Greeks repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ now faith is the key,
- 56:58
- Acts 16 31, basically says believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved and you and your household but what does it mean to believe, this is everything folks because as we're looking at later on in chapter 3,
- 57:10
- John 3 36, he who Jesus speaks of, John the Baptist made this statement,
- 57:16
- John the Apostle records it, he who believes in the Son has eternal life but he who does not believe the
- 57:21
- Son will not see life but the wrath of God abides on him I'm telling you folks, this is everything it's absolutely critical that we know
- 57:31
- God and that we believe, I have a saving faith and Jesus is willing and he's able to save to the uttermost to those who come to him 2
- 57:42
- Corinthians 5 21 for he who had made him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in him, as the old
- 57:51
- Puritan defined it the righteousness of God is that righteousness which God's righteousness requires him to require that is an infinitely holy
- 58:01
- God can require of man nothing less than the perfect righteousness but as man cannot attain this by himself
- 58:08
- God himself provides it for him through faith in Jesus Christ alone whereas another one
- 58:17
- Puritan said the righteousness of God is the sum total of all God's, God commands demands, approves and himself provides through Jesus Christ God demands it but he's provided it all in Christ I'd like to close with a wonderful story that was told by a man by the name of Paul Luther that was actually the son of Martin Luther and as you well know we we mention
- 58:45
- Martin Luther at times here he was only a mere man but God used this man he didn't reform the church actually if he had his way he wouldn't reform the church but God saw fit to reform the church the word of God reformed the church and brought the church back on its track and you know what did it?
- 59:05
- Scripture the scriptures and now I want you to hear what Paul Luther says about Martin Luther he said there was a set of medieval stairs leading up to Pilate's house in Jerusalem once tried upon the
- 59:20
- Lord and for this reason they were called the the holy stairs it was the customs for pilgrims like Luther to ascend to these steps as a monk on his knees praying as they went upward at certain intervals and they were stains said to have been caused by the bleeding wounds of Jesus Christ the worshipper would bend over and kiss these steps praying a long time as they ascended painfully to the next step the next step ascending upward thinking that they were earning their way to heaven remission of years of punishment and purgatory was promised to all who would perform this pious exercise and Luther began as others had but as he ascended the staircase the words of the text came forcefully in his mind as he studied the book of Romans in Wittenberg and it came from that wonderful text in Romans 1 verse 17 the just shall live by faith and that kept coming to him as he was ascending up to those stairs they seemed to echo over and over again the just shall live by faith the just shall live by faith growing louder and louder with each repetition the just shall live by faith but as the time of his life as you well know
- 01:00:37
- Luther was not living by faith at that time he was living by fear folks all he could see was the frown of God the old superstitions doctrines and biblical theology wrestled within him and by fear said
- 01:00:53
- Luther by faith said Saint Paul by fear said the Galastic fathers of medieval
- 01:00:59
- Catholicism by faith said the scriptures by fear said those who agonized beside him on the staircase by faith said
- 01:01:09
- God the father from the scriptures at last Luther arose in amazement from the steps upon which he had dragged himself and shuddered at his superstitious folly now he realized that God had saved him by the righteousness of Christ received by faith alone in the person and works of Jesus Christ he was to exercise that faith receive that righteousness and live by trusting
- 01:01:34
- God slowly he turned on Pilate's staircase and returned to the bottom and he went back to Wittenberg Germany where he preached and in time as Paul Luther his son wrote he says he took verse 17 of chapter 1 the just shall live by faith and he put
- 01:01:56
- Sola alone as the foundation of his doctrine of all that he believed justification by faith alone folks that's in the person of Jesus Christ of what he is and who he is and what he did this was the real beginning of the reformation and for the reformation of Luther necessarily preceded the reformation of Christendom end quote of Paul Luther beloved as the old hymn says rock of ages cleft for me let me hide myself in thee notice the verse not the labor of my hands can fulfill the laws demands could my zeal no longer know could my tears forever flow all for sin could not atone thou must say and thou alone
- 01:02:57
- Christ saves and he saves now he saves to the uttermost he's willing and he's able folks are you wholly trusting in Jesus for your salvation are you trusting in Jesus alone for your salvation nothing else not 99 .9
- 01:03:19
- % it must be 100 % because at the judgment it's in Christ or outside of Christ nothing else is going to do but I'm here to tell you according to the word of God the blood of Jesus Christ washes away from all sin and Christ there's justification before God and you can count on it because Jesus says it is finished it's paid in full have you repented of your sin have you believed the gospel
- 01:03:56
- I'm talking about you because it's you alone that's going to stand before God that knows everything about us in our little speck of time here on this earth compared to eternity and God's going to weigh everything into balance and we're going to stand before him will it be depart from me
- 01:04:17
- I never knew you or will it be well done good and faithful servant enter into the joy of the
- 01:04:23
- Lord you must come and get peace with God on that and it's only in through Jesus Christ have you believed the gospel have you repented have you turned from your sin and have you laid hold of Christ or should
- 01:04:46
- I say has Christ laid hold of you trust in him today for today is the day of salvation don't put it off don't put this off it's too critical receive him come to him because Jesus said come unto me all you labor and heavy laden
- 01:05:03
