Recently a friend asked if I would make a series of videos to aid in family worship. This is the SIXTH VIDEO in that series, looking at Moses. This can be used to prepare a time of family worship or to be shown during family worship. If you like this video and want me to continue, please leave a comment below.

Hey guys, it's Keith, and welcome back to our family worship series. As I've mentioned in previous videos, this can be used in one of two ways.
00:08
Either you as a parent can take this video and use it to prepare for family worship, or you can simply play this video during family worship and walk along with it along with your family.
00:18
Now last week in our family worship service, we looked at the life of Abraham and the way that the
00:24
New Testament points back to him to explain certain theological truths. We noted that Abraham's promise included the gospel.
00:32
We also noted that Abraham was an example of justification by faith, and that he also exemplified how faith that justifies will never be alone, but will always be accompanied by good works.
00:45
The memory verse from last week was Ephesians 2, verses 8 -10.
00:50
How many of you can remember that verse and quote it? Take an opportunity to pause the video, go around and see how many remember it, and then spend a few minutes discussing the relationship between grace, faith, and works.
01:09
Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone, and that faith produces good works.
01:15
We make a huge mistake when we get that out of order, and we make our salvation by our works.
01:20
Now one of the ways people often get confused about the relationship between faith and works is when they read the law.
01:26
Often they think the law was intended to save. But the Bible tells us that the law can't save.
01:32
It actually shows us our need for salvation. And that leads us to this week's important biblical figure, the great lawgiver of Israel, Moses.
01:42
Moses was born at a time where there was great persecution of the Israelites by the Egyptians.
01:47
At the end of Genesis, the descendants of Israel had moved to Egypt. And over a period of 400 years, they had become enslaved to the
01:56
Egyptians. Now the stories about Moses are too many to be included in one short video. But here's a good way to think about Moses' life.
02:04
Moses lived 120 years. Deuteronomy 34, verse 7 says, Moses was 120 years old when he died.
02:12
His eyes were undimmed and his vigor unabated. So his 120 years can be broken down into three 40 -year periods.
02:21
The first 40 years of Moses' life were spent in the house of Pharaoh, where he had been found and adopted by the daughter of the
02:29
Pharaoh. The next 40 years of his life he spent as an exile in the land of Midian.
02:34
And the last 40 years of his life was spent leading the Israelites out of their bondage in Egypt.
02:40
That was called the Exodus, which is where we get the name of the second book of the Bible, which is called
02:45
Exodus. Of all the things Moses was famous for, the Ten Commandments certainly are the foremost among them.
02:52
There's even a movie called The Ten Commandments, which is about the life of Moses. The New Testament says in John 1, 17,
03:00
For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
03:06
Let's stop right there because that is a great memory verse. John 1, 17 is this week's memory verse.
03:12
Also, I want to take an opportunity as we pause the video to have everyone go around the room and see how many of the
03:19
Ten Commandments you can remember. Here's a fun video my fellow pastor and I made where we went out and asked people how many of the
03:30
Ten Commandments they could remember. If you name all
03:42
Ten Commandments, I'll give you this. You can buy you a funnel cake or a caramel apple if you want. I will give this to you if you will name all
03:49
Ten Commandments. Do you know the Ten Commandments? I don't know them fully.
03:56
Ten dollars. It's real. All ten. Okay. And that will reimburse. Is this your husband?
04:02
Yeah. It'll reimburse you for the tea you bought. No, thanks. All right.
04:11
You can't steal. All right. You can't kill. Yeah. Don't worship false idols or false gods.
04:18
That's number two. I don't even think I know one. Sure you know one.
04:25
You may not steal. Okay. You may not speak bad over other people. That's not one of them.
04:32
You shouldn't do that, but that's not one of them. You want to steal?
04:37
All right, there's one. They don't have to be in order. Yes, and not vote for Biden.
04:46
That's not vote for Biden. Oh, my bad. Hold on now.
04:51
I've got some more. Obey your mother and your father. Yep. Oh, man, we're getting there. Let's see here.
04:57
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife.
05:06
That's the same. Is it? Yes. That's what I killed. There you go. That could have been the first one.
05:12
My bad. The commandments that God gave to Israel teach us some very important theological truths.
05:20
One, they teach us about the moral character of God. Two, they affirm our unrighteousness.
05:27
And three, they show us our need for a Savior. The Apostle Paul says in Galatians 3, verse 24,
05:34
Therefore the law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ so that we may be justified by faith.
05:43
The law also included ceremonies, which pointed us to the work of Jesus. Every sacrifice of the
05:49
Old Covenant law pointed to the work of Christ. Every feast that Israel was commanded to hold pointed to Jesus.
05:56
The elements of the tabernacle, including the priesthood, all pointed to Christ. We call these things types of Christ.
06:04
Paul also calls them shadows. A shadow is something that is cast by something else.
06:11
Like when a person walks with a light behind them, there's going to be a shadow that goes before them.
06:16
Well, Jesus was preceded by a shadow in the Old Testament that pointed to him.
06:22
Colossians 2, verse 16 says, One of the clearest types in the
06:42
Old Testament is the Passover lamb. God commanded Pharaoh to release the people of Israel from their bondage.
06:49
Pharaoh refused, so God sent a series of plagues on Egypt. The last one was the worst, because it included the death of the firstborn from every household.
07:01
But God provided protection for the Israelites. God told them that if they killed a lamb and put its blood on the door of their house, he would pass over that house, and the firstborn child would be saved.
07:13
And that's where we get the word Passover. Well, in the New Testament, Jesus is actually called our
07:20
Passover lamb, because when we believe in him, his blood covers our sins, and the judgment of God is able to pass over us.
07:29
1 Corinthians 5, 7. The story of the
07:42
Passover lamb, along with many other important stories, is contained in the Pentateuch, which is the first five books of the
07:50
Bible. Pentateuch means the five scrolls. These five books were all written by Moses, and they lay the groundwork for everything else that would come in the
07:59
Bible, including the life of Jesus. Now, I hope you found this short video on the life of Moses to be helpful.
08:06
Don't forget to practice your memory verse this week, which was John 1, 17. For the law was given through Moses.
08:12
Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Next time, we're going to continue our family worship study by looking at King David.
