As Christians we are comforted and we are comforting, at least that's the way that it should be.
00:07
In 2 Corinthians in chapter 1 the Apostle Paul, having greeted the saints there, says,
00:13
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
00:31
For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
00:38
I don't know what may be the particular tribulations that you are suffering as a
00:44
Christian. Perhaps you're living in a home with people who don't know and don't love the
00:51
Lord God as he's made himself known to us in the Lord Jesus Christ. Perhaps there are some particular pressures or persecutions to some extent that you face.
01:01
Perhaps there are trials from neighbours or colleagues or friends who despise and disdain the fact that you are seeking still to follow the
01:11
Lord Jesus Christ. Perhaps it's the griefs of your own soul as you strive against sin.
01:18
Perhaps it's a more natural tribulation we might say and there are distinct sufferings and sorrows that make your life as a
01:27
Christian particularly hard and I'm emphasising here the fact that it's as a
01:33
Christian. This is I think at least a little more typically than just having a hard time of it which is true of everybody in the world and the reason why
01:45
I'm emphasising the distinctively Christian nature of the tribulations is because that's mirrored in the distinctively
01:52
Christian nature of the comforts. Paul here is blessing the God and Father of our
01:59
Lord Jesus Christ, God viewed in Christ, God mediated to us in mercy and in grace, the
02:06
Father of mercies and God of all comfort. These are sweet titles for the
02:12
God who knows us and who we know, the God that we serve, who loves us and is beloved by us and it's this
02:21
God, the Father of mercies and the God of all comforts, who comforts us in all our tribulations.
02:28
God draws near to us to bless us in the midst of all such sorrows and sufferings.
02:35
God comforts us, he consoles us, he pours in balm to our souls, he lifts up our spirits, he draws us near to him.
02:46
When we call out to the Lord God he is very quick to show this kindness to us, he is disposed always to do this good toward us.
02:57
But says the Apostle Paul, it's not just that Christians are comforted people, they are also comforting people.
03:06
One of the reasons why God shows these mercies toward us is that we may then, as it were, pass them on to others, that we then may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
03:23
Now one of the things that I think is particularly sweet about this is that it means
03:28
I don't necessarily need to suffer precisely the same tribulation as another
03:35
Christian in order to comfort them because Paul doesn't say you have to suffer precisely as they have suffered, you need to go through precisely the same trial that they have experienced.
03:47
What he says is that you can comfort them with the comfort with which you have been comforted, that you can communicate to them the same consolations, the same joys, the same truths that have lifted your soul in your trials with a measure of confidence that although they may not be going through precisely the same experience, they may know precisely the same comforts or consolations from the
04:19
Father of mercies and the God of all comforts. So if you are suffering trials and tribulations today as a
04:27
Christian, then you go to the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort and you call upon him and you look to him for the lifting of your soul and the strengthening of your hand and when he's done that for you, don't forget to look for others who may also be facing similar difficulties and take those same comforts and pass them on to them for the glory of God and the good of souls.
