00:14
Welcome to another installment of Fighting for the Faith. My name is Chris Roseboro. I am your servant in Jesus Christ, and this is the channel that compares what people are saying in the name of God to the
00:25
Word of God. So we're going to talk about what prayer is and what prayer isn't.
00:31
And in this episode, we're going to be listening to Terri Savelle Foy. My apologies. It does sound like she ingests high amounts of helium.
00:40
That's her voice. It is what it is. But what we're going to be doing is we're going to be looking at a video that she put out where she is instructing people to follow along and say affirmations, and that by doing so that they would be able to attract money to themselves.
01:00
This is the New Age practice known as the Law of Attraction. It's not a biblical practice at all, and worse, it's not even prayer.
01:09
So if you've been taught that praying is about decreeing and declaring or speaking positive affirmations or positive confessions over your life and that that would then result in good results coming to you, that ain't prayer.
01:28
That isn't what the Scripture teaches at all. And we'll even talk about, in fact, most of this episode is going to be about talking about what does the
01:36
Bible teach regarding prayer. So let's whirl up the desktop, and that's a photo
01:42
I recently took of that big Aurora that we had, and let's take this out as our web browser.
01:52
So you'll note the name of the video put out by Terry Savelle Foy is Christian Affirmations for Financial Success with Scriptures Attract Money.
02:05
This is the New Age practice known as the Law of Attraction. This is nowhere taught in Scripture. You will see nothing like this in any book of the
02:13
Bible. There is no single character in the Scriptures that does affirmations or things like this.
02:20
And Jesus nowhere taught us to do these affirmations for the purpose of attracting money.
02:27
So you're going to note that Terry Savelle Foy, daughter of the deceased now, Jerry Savelle.
02:33
Yeah, that's right. He died of, looks like a heart attack or something. And she's still teaching his heresies, and she's now the main cheerleader, person in her family out there teaching the nonsense known as the
02:50
Word of Faith heresy. But I want you to listen to just a portion of this and see if this makes any biblical sense to you at all.
03:00
So here's Terry Savelle Foy. Finance declarations. I declare in the name of Jesus, I am blessed with an abundance of prosperity.
03:10
I declare in the name of Jesus, I am blessed with an abundance of prosperity. Where's that taught in the
03:17
Bible? Nowhere. Did Jesus ever teach this? No. Did any of his apostles teach this?
03:23
No. And I don't like the... I'm going to see. Hang on a second here. I'm going to see if I can turn down the brightness of my screen because I'm getting like a pink hue on my face.
03:36
Yuck. Okay. I'm enjoying a debt -free life. All of my needs are met.
03:45
So you're going to note here, the person who is making these affirmations, they aren't presently enjoying a debt -free life.
03:53
So what are they doing? They're, by these declarations and these affirmations, there's, I am enjoying a debt free life.
03:59
I am going to create that reality through these affirmations. By my faith, I trust that I am now...
04:06
So debt is just a, you know, it's not a reality at all in my life because I'm presently enjoying a debt -free life.
04:14
What? And how, where in scripture does it say, if you say things like this, that you're going to attract money to yourself?
04:21
I live to give. I am blessed to be a blessing. What's with the new age soaking music in the background?
04:31
I receive the abundance God has for me. I am a tither and a giver.
04:40
That's a big part of the Word of Faith, Harris. You've got to be a tither. I am enriched in everything I do. My personal income is increasing.
04:52
My savings account is increasing. I am a wise steward with my finances.
05:00
I can be trusted with great wealth because I am a giver. I can be trusted with great wealth because I'm a giver.
05:06
So you sit there and you meditate, you soak on this stuff, and here's the thing. You do this, you ain't praying.
05:13
If you're in financial duress, this ain't going to help you. This is just nonsensical, delusional nonsense, and based in the new age concept known as the law of attraction, which the
05:24
Bible doesn't teach anywhere. So what does the Bible teach regarding prayer?
05:30
So we're going to just do a little bit of a study here. So Philippians chapter four, good place to go.
05:37
Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I will say rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.
05:44
The Lord is at hand. Now, watch where this goes. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
06:00
Now, you're going to note here, this is a completely different paradigm taught in scripture regarding prayer than what
06:07
Terri Savelle Foy is doing. She's doing declarations and positive affirmations and all this kind of nonsense, which again, you cannot find a single example of that anywhere in the scripture.
06:17
Instead, you're going to note here, we are told specifically as Christians to by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
06:28
So this is a quick word study, if you would. So the word there for prayer is prosuche.
06:35
And notice, it's a petition addressed to a deity. A petition addressed to a deity.
06:42
That's what prayer is. So you'll note that by that definition, we can't pray to the
06:48
Virgin Mary, can we? No, we can't because she's not a deity. Why would I petition the
06:54
Virgin Mary? She's a creature like me, a sinful one at that, when she was alive.
07:00
So who do I bring my petitions to? God. So note, do not be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer.
07:10
These are petitions to God. And supplication, another next word here, deesis, here in the
07:17
Greek. What is a supplication? An urgent request to meet a need exclusively addressed to God.
07:25
So a supplication is a type of prayer that you have in an urgent need.
07:30
So have any of you been part of a church where somebody was in a car accident or maybe somebody got ill all of a sudden and unexpectedly.
07:37
And so they found themselves in the emergency room and then they were admitted in the hospital, right? And so what happens is everybody, the prayer chain at the church goes off the hook.
07:47
Everyone jumps in and prayers, requests for prayers are going through emails, text messages, and everyone's stopping what they're doing to pray in that urgent moment for the person who's in need.
07:59
That's a supplication. And you're going to know, it's an urgent what? Request.
08:08
When you pray, you are asking God for things.
08:14
You're not decreeing, you're not declaring, you're not making positive confessions of yourself.
08:19
In fact, I would note, anybody who's been deceived into believing that prayer is the thing that Paterius of Velfoy was doing in that video, they've been so deceived by the devil that the devil now has cut off communication between them and God.
08:35
Always and again, you think of those scary movies, right? You know, scary movie. You got some axe murderer who's going to kill a bunch of teenagers, right?
08:43
And they're off in a cabin in the woods. What's the first thing the axe murderer does? He cuts the phone line. Nowadays, people have cell phones.
08:50
So, you know, what's the axe murderer do? Make sure that they don't have cell service, right?
08:57
Because the idea then is if they're able to communicate, they're able to get help. And the axe murderer wants to murder them without them having the ability to get help, right?
09:05
That's the point. And so I would note, false teachers and false doctrine, especially rank heretical stuff, always and again, they change the doctrine of prayer and the goal of the devil is to cut off all communication between you and God.
09:21
And once that communication is cut off, you think you're talking to God when in fact you're not.
09:26
But all you're doing is saying, I decree and declare over myself wealth and prosperity and all these kinds of things.
09:32
And you're not asking God for nothing. Note that in prayer, we ask
09:39
God for things. So that's a great text to go to. And then
09:44
I would note a little known fact is that in Ephesians chapter six, the portion of scripture that has to do with spiritual warfare and the armor of God.
09:56
Once you're armored up, what are you commanded to do? Okay, so watch what it says.
10:02
Therefore, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, having done all to stand firm, stand firm.
10:08
Therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness as the shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
10:17
In all circumstances, take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish the flaming darts of the evil one and take up the helmet of salvation, the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.
10:27
So you're armored up. You got all your armor on. What do you do now? Pray.
10:35
Praying at all times in the spirit with all prayer, petitions and supplications, urgent requests to that end, to keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints and also for me that words may be given to me in opening my mouth.
10:52
Don't tell me about spiritual warfare if you don't even understand that your job as a
10:57
Christian is to ask God for things, for yourself and for others.
11:03
That's what prayer is. And then I would note the scriptures themselves teach us great ways in which to pray.
11:09
I would note that the prosperity folks need to learn how to pray this one from Proverbs chapter 30.
11:16
Two things I ask of you, Lord, deny them not to me before I die. Remove far from me falsehood and lying and give me neither poverty nor riches.
11:27
Feed me with the food that is needful for me lest I be full and deny you and say, who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my
11:36
God. That's a great little prayer. I think we should add that one into our mix. But let me show you something here.
11:41
This is one of my prize possessions. And this is a gift that I received when
11:46
I graduated from high school. And you sit there, what is it? That is a
11:53
Bible, not the complete Bible. So back in the day, we didn't have cell phones.
11:58
So when I graduated in 1986, that shows you how old I am, that I received this as a gift.
12:07
And what is it? It's a New American Standard, New Testament. And it has in it the entire
12:14
New Testament as well as the Psalms and the Proverbs. And one of the things that I remember when
12:21
I got this going, why would anyone want a Bible that is incomplete? I would note that in the past, soldiers when they would travel, when they would be deployed and stuff like this, this was about the only size
12:32
Bible they can bring. And no, they don't stop bullets. But why would somebody, if the only thing they could have as far as the
12:39
Scripture would be the New Testament and then the Psalms and the Proverbs? The answer is actually quite simple. Obviously, the
12:46
New Testament is where we're going to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the good news that our sins are forgiven for the sake of what
12:53
Christ has done for us and His vicarious life and death on the cross for us and His resurrection from the grave.
13:00
But the Psalter, the Psalms, have always been, for all
13:05
Christians of all eras, has been the prayer book of the saints. If you want to learn how to pray, you learn by praying the prayers that are in the
13:16
Psalms. The Psalms are not just flowery languages and poems and things like this.
13:22
Roses are red and violets are blue and I love you Jesus and now can
13:27
I go to the zoo? I'm not good at verses and things like that but you get the idea. No, the
13:32
Psalter has always been the prayer book of the Bible itself. So, you want to learn how to pray?
13:39
Start praying the Psalms. So, let me give you an example. I'll walk you through what would be considered to be some good
13:47
Psalms to pray. Do you feel like God is not there? Do you feel like He's not listening to you?
13:53
Your needs, your requests to God are going unanswered. Well, Psalm 13 kind of comes to mind.
14:00
How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
14:06
How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
14:14
Consider and answer me, O Yahweh, my God. Light up my eyes lest I sleep the sleep of death.
14:21
Lest my enemy say I have prevailed over him. Lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
14:27
But, I have trusted in your steadfast love. My heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
14:32
I will sing to Yahweh because He has dealt bountifully with me. That's a great, great psalm.
14:40
And you'll know it's a prayer and you can make these words your own. Now, I can hear some of you going, you can't pray pre -written prayers.
14:48
That's vain repetition. No, it is not. In fact, let's take a look at this text, shall we?
14:55
You'll note that the concept of vain repetition is not about praying pre -written prayers at all.
15:03
How do I know? Because of Matthew chapter 6. So let me show you this. I'm going to open this up in the
15:08
King James. We're going to, so we'll open this up in the King James Bible and I have to make this bigger.
15:14
In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus warns against praying like the hypocrites.
15:20
And listen to what he says. So, when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets that they may be seen of men.
15:33
Verily, I say unto you, they have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy father which is in secret and thy father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
15:50
But when ye pray, do not, use not vain repetitions as the heathens do for they think that they shall be heard for they are much speaking.
16:01
Be ye not therefore like unto them for your father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask of him.
16:09
So, note here, vain repetitions, that's where Christ mentions it.
16:15
And what then is his solution to those who pray like the heathen in vain repetitions?
16:22
So, after this manner Jesus says, therefore pray you. Our father which art in heaven hallowed be thy name.
16:28
So, Jesus gives us a word for word prayer that we can pray and it is the antidote to the vain repetitions here.
16:37
So, the idea then is that part of your prayers daily should include word for word the
16:46
Lord's prayer. That's not sinful or vain repetition at all according to Matthew 6.
16:52
It's the solution to vain repetition. It's the antidote to the problem of vain repetition.
16:58
So, when you pray don't heap up empty phrases. Instead, pray like this. Our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name.
17:05
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.
17:19
For thine is the kingdom the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. This should be part of your daily prayers.
17:27
And you'll note these are petitions. In fact, in the
17:33
Greek, these are imperatives of entreaty, which means basically these are urgent petitions being brought up to God.
17:42
So we're praying, your kingdom come, your will be done and we're asking God for these things. Let me give you some more of the
17:48
Psalms then. Have you sinned grievously? Have you recognized that your sin is horrible and you need
17:59
God to forgive you? May I suggest praying Psalm 51. Have mercy on me,
18:04
O God. According to your steadfast love, according to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions.
18:11
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgression and my sin is ever before me.
18:19
Against you and you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight so that you may be justified in your words, blameless in your judgment.
18:27
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being and you teach me wisdom and secret heart.
18:38
So purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.
18:44
Let me hear joy and gladness let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all of my iniquities.
18:54
Create in me a clean heart O God and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence and take not your holy spirit from me.
19:03
Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.
19:10
It goes on but you get the idea. The Psalter was always designed to be a prayer book.
19:16
There are great prayers in there. Let me give you another one. Are you struggling to understand
19:21
God's word? Do you really want to know it? To know it well enough to be able to say it correctly to others and assure you are not deceived?
19:33
There is a wonderful prayer in Psalm 119 starting at verse 33. Teach me your way forward.
19:51
Lead me in the path of your commandments for I delight in it. Incline my heart to your testimonies and not to selfish gain.
20:01
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things and give me life in your ways.
20:07
Confirm to your servant your promise that you may be feared. Turn away the reproach that I dread for your rules are good.
20:16
Behold, I long for your precepts and in your righteousness. Give me life. Yes, you should be praying these things.
20:24
And you're going to know when you see the Psalms as a prayer book and you start working your way through it regularly.
20:32
These prayers then become your own. You learn how to pray by praying back to God.
20:38
Let me give you another one. Oh God, from my youth, you have taught me and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.
20:49
So even to old age and gray hairs, oh God, do not forsake me until I proclaim your might to another generation.
20:57
Are you struggling to want to share the gospel or feel uncomfortable when you have the opportunity to share the greatness of God and the mighty works that he has done in Christ?
21:08
Well, this is a good prayer for you. Even so to my old age, oh God, do not forsake me until I proclaim your might to another generation and your power to all those who come.
21:19
Your righteousness, oh God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things, oh
21:25
God, who is like you? You who have made me see many troubles and calamities, you will revive me again from the depths of the earth, you will bring me up again.
21:36
You will increase my greatness and comfort me again.
21:43
I will also praise you with the heart for your faithfulness, oh my God, I will sing praises to you with the lyre, oh holy one of Israel.
21:51
Beautiful prayer. So you get the idea here. There is so much to this.
21:57
The one thing you can see consistently throughout the Psalms is exactly what the
22:02
New Testament teaches. Prayer is the humble asking of God for the things that you need.
22:09
It has nothing to do with declarations or nonsense like we've heard Terry Saville say.
22:39
inspired ideas that produce millions of dollars. Just absolute nonsense.
22:47
And what does this do? You're not talking to God. You're not asking for anything. Are you struggling in your life?
22:55
Are you having a difficult time making ends meet? Don't do this.
23:02
Instead, humbly ask God for the things you need. He'll answer you because God cares for his children.
23:09
Don't let this type of stuff cut you off from communicating with God and asking for the things that you need.
23:15
Because that's exactly what this is. This is a counterfeit form of prayer that cuts you off from communicating to God.
23:22
And as a result of it, it harms those who follow it. So hopefully you found this helpful.
23:27
