- This is a ministry of striving for eternity. One of the most common logical fallacies that you see when having any kind of discussion with people, whether it be politics, religion, or anything that people feel very strongly about, is what is called the straw man argument.
- 01:30
- What is the straw man argument? A straw man argument is basically when somebody gives a definition that's not actually the real definition, but one that can easily be knocked over.
- 01:42
- This is a very effective way to try to argue with people who don't recognize logical fallacies or apply critical thinking.
- 01:50
- Why? Well, basically because what they do is they will give a definition, attack that definition, and if you don't recognize that they did a bait -and -switch and gave you a different definition, well, you think they actually argued their case, when in fact, they argued nothing at all.
- 02:08
- They argued against something that doesn't exist, a definition that's not accurate to what the actual definition is.
- 02:16
- This straw man argument is used in an attempt to convince people that someone has an answer to something when they really don't.
- 02:26
- And when people have to rely on a straw man argument, well, if you're debating with them, you know you just won.
- 02:33
- Why? Because they can't be honest enough to deal with what the real definition is.
- 02:39
- So, recognize a straw man argument when you see it and call it out for what it is.
