Alright, we're live at Fightland Feast, wait for it, wait for it, there it is, yeah welcome back to Deadman Walking Podcast, yeah that was
00:20
Jason's riff there that he made up on the fly at 1 o 'clock in the morning in the studio. I've been trying to get a new intro done, you know why not try 10 to 20 different ones.
00:29
Testing them out, you know, until one of our esteemed guests here, maybe they'll vote on it, Doug can tell us, but yeah we're live at Fightland Feast in Rapid City, South Dakota, we are on day one, we have with us
00:41
Pastor Doug Wilson and his trusty sidekick, producer, filmmaker, writer, extraordinaire
00:49
Joseph, how are you sir? I'm good, how are you? So we have him on just for a little bit here and we wanted to talk a little bit about Ride Sally Ride, now if you guys have been listening to the podcast for any amount of time you know that we were in Nashville, we had
01:01
Pastor Doug on and we just touched on the book, but we have an announcement to make here and I think it's public, but we wanted to bring it to our listeners as well,
01:10
I think we have a movie in the works, don't we Pastor Doug? Yes, it is public, there's a movie in the works.
01:16
And who's creating that movie? I think it's the other gentleman that's sitting to your right, correct? Joseph Granda has just finished the first draft, rough draft of the screenplay from the book.
01:26
Yeah, and I know you touched on this a little bit in your talk that you just got off stage talking about almost how when you submitted that book or when you've submitted some of your other books, they said it's too crazy, too out of this world and then life imitates art.
01:42
Right. And that's kind of where we are on Ride Sally Ride. Can you give a little overview for the listeners of what Ride Sally Ride is about and what the movie is going to focus on?
01:49
I can give you the basic setup. The book is set 20 or 30 years in the future, the
01:56
United States is hanging by a thread, the red state, blue state thing is really inflamed, so the traditional map is largely a fiction.
02:10
The country is all but gone. And in that state, Colorado is a blue, blue, blue state and a young man in that setup winds up through a series of circumstances, he works at a recycling center, he compacts his neighbor's sex doll.
02:30
Okay. And it wasn't by accident, he does it on purpose, but what happens, and this is all in the first chapter or so, there's a woke prosecutor there who, because the sex doll was identified as his wife by the man who owned it, he charges my protagonist with first degree murder.
02:51
So because he collected a doll that was identified as a wife.
02:57
And so that's the central driving insanity and then everything else cascades down from there.
03:05
And what a premise. When you're saying that, obviously it sounds like a phenomenal book, it sounds like a phenomenal movie too.
03:12
Yeah. So, Joseph, how did you get attracted to this project and where do you think you're going to take it in the movie format?
03:20
Well, I've read a fair amount of Doug's books and as I like to tell people, last year we got quarantined, my wife and I, and we came out
03:29
Calvinist, watching - That'll do it. Yeah. Yeah. It's great.
03:36
You must have had extra time to spend with the Lord. Is that how you became Reformed? Okay. That's copy written now. I don't want to see it on your t -shirts or anything.
03:44
So I read the book and I was like just, and then
03:49
I read it again, my wife was like, are you reading that book again? I'm like, oh no, it's reading me this time. And I was actually in the process of, and listen,
04:01
I just show up and go where God wants me to go and I thought, well, I'm going to write
04:07
Doug Wilson. So I wrote to everybody I could up in Moscow, like I said, and I got on and did a pitch over Zoom with him and Aaron Wrench and then
04:18
I went up there and broke bread and I think they just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy or some willy nilly nut job.
04:24
Wanted to make sure he didn't have three heads and drool. Right. Because I live in Colorado. Right. You never know.
04:30
It was red when I got there though, let's be clear. Right, right. I got there. There you go. So what's our timeline looking like for a film?
04:37
Well, you know, I think what's important in filmmaking is that the most important thing is story.
04:43
The story has to be the foundation of it. It's got to be right. There's no writing, there's only rewriting, especially in a screenplay.
04:51
I've worked on movies where, you know, things, it's a collaborative event and people come up with ideas and you rewrite it right on set.
04:59
I would say the right scenario would be the spring of 22 with,
05:05
I'd love to see it released just before the midterms to drive people crazy in a loving way, of course.
05:13
That's important. Now, I do find it funny that, Doug, you said you set this 20 to 30 years out, but even what you talked about today here at the
05:21
Fight Laugh Feast Rally in South Dakota, you were talking about, like we said, reality imitating art in one of your previous books,
05:28
Evangelifish, that you said kind of got some comments back, rejection letters, nope, too sensational, not set in reality, and then, boy, we have some stuff happen within the
05:37
Christian world that imitates that. Are we going to beat the 20 to 30 year mark when we see someone prosecuted for something similar to this?
05:45
I think we might be heading in that trajectory. It might happen in the next few years. Yeah, it's kind of crazy because within the year of the book being published,
05:53
I had people sending me articles of men announcing their marriage to their sex doll.
06:00
At least a couple of stories were, okay, they're saying that they're married, this is a wedding and everything, and so, okay, if they're married, what follows?
06:09
What follows? Well, what follows is basically what
06:15
I want to do is push the envelope while it's still pushable. Right, yeah.
06:20
Fifteen years ago, I clicked on the TV, and there was actually a guy pushing a sex doll in a wheelchair down the road, and my buddy was like, where does this guy live?
06:32
And it turned out, this guy was from my hometown, and I was like, I've never seen this guy around, but we're not that far off from this actually happening, from this actual story, you know?
06:43
Let me unfortunately confirm for you all, in writing, I did some research.
06:52
Right. Yikes. That's good. Yeah, boy. I mean, let's start at $3 ,000 for these things, because I just wanted to see, well, what is its ability?
07:03
You know? And yeah, you can get them to talk, and you can buy interchangeable heads, and it's really kind of a build -your -own -woman.
07:11
It's really quite disgusting in an oddly humorous way to me. But yeah, that's where it's going.
07:18
Yeah, and I don't want to give away the book, but I think also too, even your fiction, Doug, it points to a certain, you're trying to make a point, and one that is obviously from a biblical world view, the depravity of man, all these things.
07:34
Even the fiction is pointing towards the absurdity, and you know, like I was saying when I was reading
07:39
Evangelifish, there's some things in there where you'll just, you'll kind of write something in there to make that thinker, or the reader think, you know?
07:46
And it reflects kind of what you were saying just today as well. I mean, you said, when we enter into worship, and we're spinning around like sprinklers, okay, and for any of those that don't get the reference, go watch the live stream of his talk, what do you expect is going to happen on earth?
08:02
And we had Pastor Toby on here just earlier today talking about, yeah, we're the leaders, right? The church is the leader of the culture, and yet we've allowed the culture to do so poorly, the culture's in disarray, and we go throw up our hands and say, why is this?
08:18
And it's really, we're kind of introspecting, correct, is what you were saying, like, what do you expect if we're not correctly and biblically leading from the pulpit?
08:26
Well, guys, we appreciate you listening. We appreciate both you guys coming on. I would definitely say for all of our listeners, go check out
08:33
Doug's works. You can find a lot of them on Canon Press. That's a free plug to Canon, too, because I do pay for that app, because it's well worth it.
08:40
Joseph also has a film. Okay. Tell us a little bit about that before we get on. I actually have a film that has nothing to do with sex dolls in it.
08:48
Oh, then we don't want to hear about it. Just to make a point about both the novel and the movie,
08:55
I know there is these strange relationships with synthetic humans, not humans, but synthetic dolls, is that in the heart of this book and the movie is a real love story between an actual young, godly, masculine man and a smart, young, feminine woman that ultimately comes to God.
09:21
So what it's really about, it's a love story in the mix of this insane world. But yeah,
09:27
I have a movie out right now that you can stream a lot of places, most especially on Amazon Prime.
09:32
Not that I want to give money to Jeff Bezos, but it's called The Healing Garden.
09:38
The Healing Garden. So you can watch it with your kids, your grandkids, and not have to worry about it. Awesome. Joe, we appreciate you guys coming on.
09:45
I know Jason and I do. And guys, make sure you go check out their work. Make sure you check out the book and the movie coming in, hopefully 2022.
09:52
