So the overview of the week for this Sunday is the fifth book of Moses, the book of Deuteronomy.
This is the final book that makes up the Pentateuch, which means five books.
Genesis through Deuteronomy is also referred to as the Torah, or the books of the law.
Now the word Deuteronomy basically means the second law. So what this book is, it's the law of God restated.
Chapters one through 30 consist of three speeches delivered by Moses to the children of Israel on the plains of Moab shortly before they entered into the promised land.
Moses also prophesied about the coming of the Messiah in chapter 18, verse 15, when he said, the
Lord, your God, speaking to the Israelites, the Lord, your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from the midst from your brethren, him you shall hear.
And when Jesus came nearly 1500 years later, fulfilling the law, which spoke of him,
Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy more than any other book. Deuteronomy ends with a transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua, and then the death of Moses on Mount Nebo.
And the interesting thing about that, God was the one who buried him. The final chapter of Deuteronomy says this, so Moses, the servant of the
Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab.
