- 00:13
- Welcome back to Dated by God's Word. This is Andy Cain, and today we're looking at Psalm 119, verse 26.
- 00:19
- He says, I have recounted my ways, and you have answered me. Teach me your statutes.
- 00:24
- And there's a great cross -reference over in Psalm 25, verse 4 and 5. It says, Make me know your paths,
- 00:30
- O Yahweh. Teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the
- 00:37
- God of my salvation, and you I hope all the day. The final authority for the Christian, the thing that we find as our foundational understanding of who
- 00:48
- God is, and how we are to be rightly related to Him, is the Word of God. Unfortunate for many that are in the
- 00:54
- Roman Catholic Church, they see it as the Pope, and the bishops, and cardinals, and tradition, and all these things in addition to Scripture.
- 01:02
- And they say Peter was the first Pope, and all these different things. And the problem is, Jesus held people accountable to Scripture, and what the
- 01:09
- Scripture said. And that is the final authority for the Christian, and for the church. We do not answer to a man.
- 01:15
- We do not answer to a cardinal, or a bishop, or any other organizational body. We answer to Jesus Christ, and to His Word.
- 01:23
- Now, it does not mean we don't have elders, and elders, pastors, bishops are all interchangeable terms for the same office.
- 01:30
- So we will have those roles in place to oversee, to make sure things are running properly.
- 01:38
- And the goal of the elders is to ensure that the church is functioning under the submission of the Word of God. Any Pope, any man on his own that would see himself as having equal authority to Scripture could twist
- 01:50
- Scripture to meet his own needs, and we see this in many places today. And so that's why
- 01:55
- David here, the psalmist, he's repented, he wants to be taught the Word of God. Traditions, in and of themselves, aren't necessarily evil or wrong, but if they ever find themselves in contradiction to Scripture, we are to go with Scripture, and not tradition.
- 02:10
- That's why he says, teach me your statutes, teach me your path, teach me your Word. That is what we want to apply.
- 02:16
- My prayer for you is that that is what you want to apply to your life, and I hope you have a wonderful day.
