- 00:10
 - Sin is breaking the law of God. If God says do not lie and you lie, then you've broken
 - 00:16
 - His law and sinned. When you sin, you offend God because it is His law that you've broken.
 - 00:22
 - Also, the reason God says to not lie and to not cheat, etc., is because these laws reflect the moral purity of God's character, of His very nature.
 - 00:33
 - Therefore, the law is a reflection of the character of God. It is wrong to lie because God cannot lie.
 - 00:40
 - It is wrong to steal because God cannot steal. The moral law is not arbitrary.
 - 00:47
 - It is based on God's holiness. It's based on His character. The law, then, is a standard of moral purity.
 - 00:53
 - The Old Testament contains the law of God. It is a perfect standard because it is God's standard. When we fail to keep the law, we sin.
 - 01:01
 - When we sin, we offend God. This offense against God results in a judgment. Laws are laws because they have penalties.
 - 01:08
 - There is no law without a penalty. Therefore, breaking God's law brings judgment, which is separation from God.
 - 01:15
 - It says in Isaiah 59, 2, But your sins have made a separation between you and your
 - 01:21
 - God. And Romans 6, 23 says, The wages of sin is death. So to sin, to break
 - 01:28
 - God's law, results in judgment. The judgment is known as damnation, which is the righteous judgment of God upon the sinner.
 - 01:36
 - If God did not judge the sinner, then He is not upholding His holiness and He would be allowing sinners to go unpunished.
 - 01:43
 - Of course, Jesus came to take our place and to die in our place and take our sins.
 - 01:49
 - 1 Peter 2 .24 says, He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross.
 - 01:55
 - He paid for our sins in His body on the cross. Jesus took the judgment of death upon Himself and He died.
 - 02:03
 - This further means that anyone who trusts in what Jesus did on the cross will have his sins removed. He will be saved from God's future judgment.
 - 02:12
 - So replying to the question, what is sin, is best answered by saying that it is breaking God's law.
 - 02:18
 - All people have sinned. Therefore, all people are under God's judgment, except for those who have trusted in God's provision to escape that judgment.
