God's Olive Tree of Redemption
2 views
As we follow the Apostle's case in Romans 11:5ff, we find the disposition of God's true people as Paul uses the comparative phrase "in this way" and connects the 7000 that were spared in Israel to a remnant that now exists "according to God’s gracious choice." This remnant obtained that which Israel did not, which leaves us with the question, "what of Israel?" It is here that Paul offers the analogy of the Olive Tree and how natural branches, (Israel), are broken off and wild branches, (Gentiles), are grafted in.

- I'm rich Pearson. This is let the scriptures speak. I'm coming to you recording this on September 11th the afternoon of September 11th and Like so many of you.
- 00:26
- I'm devastated by the news of our brother Charlie Kirk and his assassination.
- 00:34
- I feel numb so much of what? Has gone on in our nation so much of what has been going on that Charlie was fighting the good fight for I'm just devastated
- 00:47
- But we must move forward as for his assassin
- 00:55
- I pray that It will be found quickly. I Pray that swift justice will come upon him and I pray that God will be
- 01:06
- Swift in The prosecution swift in the
- 01:18
- Exposing of the truth of what's happened here and all who had a hand in it
- 01:24
- I pray that the Lord would expose those who Cultivated this
- 01:31
- It's terrible thing. I I like so many others who are saying
- 01:37
- You know, we learn of the leftists and they're saying that oh Gee, this should never happen.
- 01:43
- I don't believe them And I believe they believe this I believe that they behind closed doors are rejoicing because they're evil as one commentator said you cannot call us
- 01:56
- Nazis for more than a decade and think that that will not have this kind of An impact on our society
- 02:09
- And With that let's move on to our study here on that somber note in the last episode we began our study of Romans chapter 11 and in verse 1
- 02:23
- Paul asked the big question has God rejected his people and That is met with a statement of strong negation strong denial
- 02:35
- Along with a reminder of Paul's own Jewish credentials as an example
- 02:41
- But Paul then begins to describe for us who his people really are and As he unpacks that he appeals to Elijah's complaint before Yahweh in first Kings 19
- 02:56
- As he cries out to God. I'm the only one left Israel the sons of Israel have done this and the sons of Israel have done that and I'm the only one left and yet God responds to this and Paul refers to this as the divine response in verse 4 and that response if we go back and look at the
- 03:22
- Context of first Kings 19 we find a response of judgment God orders judgment upon the people the sons of Israel And he does this by first having him ordering the anointing of an enemy king
- 03:40
- Hazel in Ammon who will wage war against Israel and kill many many many people and then he orders the anointing of a military general king over Israel in replacement of that Ahab and Jezebel Jehu and that military coup will kill many people and then he orders the anointing of a new prophet
- 04:08
- Elisha and Elisha he says will kill many people and then
- 04:15
- This is where we learn of those who've been spared those who are spared by Yahweh Yahweh is the one who spares the seven thousand men that he retains for himself
- 04:28
- He retains them for himself and Paul's point Paul's Application in all of this is to ascribe to us
- 04:38
- Explain to us who are God's people his true people his true people are like the seven thousand the remnant and he explains that in The present day
- 04:56
- There is this remnant and this remnant is so by his gracious choice so What we see here that it's not by works.
- 05:09
- He explains but it's by his gracious choice and That leaves us with the question so then what of Israel how are we to discern all of this?
- 05:20
- well, let's let's come back to that thought here in a minute as We consider
- 05:25
- God's he's going to to describe for us an olive tree scenario and that olive tree will have branches
- 05:32
- Broken off and branches grafted in and we're going to unpack that here as we move forward here
- 05:39
- But I call this God's olive tree of redemption of redemptive history There are two natural categories in the olive tree two natural categories
- 05:51
- The Romans 9 6 & 7 describes as the children of the seed or the natural children the sons the ethnic children and that is first the
- 06:06
- Israelites and Second the Gentiles. These are the children of the seed they are their ancestry progeny by progeny here
- 06:19
- Their end both of them is the same remember something that if we describe the if we talk about the
- 06:25
- Israelites and the Gentiles we are describing all mankind on the face of the planet all
- 06:32
- Mankind there's Israel and then there's everybody else. Those are your two categories These are the children of the seed and their end is the same and that end is judgment and destruction
- 06:42
- The same as we see in first Kings 19 second Kings and in Chronicles We see these all these things being brought about and it is told to us that Yahweh is the one who is bringing it about But they failed because works was their vehicle and I'll read more into that here in a little bit
- 07:04
- Now we have another category and that is the spiritual category There's only really
- 07:09
- I said I have it at plural But there's only one category and that is the category of the children of the promise
- 07:15
- We see this in Romans chapter 9 verse 8 there yes Israelites and Gentiles and it is from these two ethnic groups that we have the children of the promise the children of the promise are
- 07:30
- The true people of God These are the ones that are referred to as his people and as we go through Romans chapter 11
- 07:38
- This is how it unfolds and we see this with clarity So their end too is the same and that end is eternal life by faith in Jesus Christ So let's take a closer.
- 07:52
- Look has God rejected his people? No and back to Romans 11 in Verse 5 it says in this way then this so it's got all of what happened in first Kings and we went through all of That the last episode then we have the 7 ,000 in this way then at the present time
- 08:12
- Remnant according to God's gracious choice has also come to be
- 08:18
- In this way first Kings 19 as I said presently though, let's break this down Presently now fast forward to now a remnant has come to be
- 08:29
- How did that remnant come to be look at the text? We see it right right there.
- 08:35
- Okay The vehicle by which this remnant comes to be is
- 08:42
- God's gracious choice if You do not have God's gracious choice
- 08:48
- There is no remnant You see it. So if you break it down then work it backwards no gracious choice
- 08:57
- There is no remnant See in it. Okay, so let's move forward
- 09:04
- It is no longer by works, but if it is by grace it is no longer of works. Otherwise grace is no longer grace
- 09:11
- So let's discuss this a second. Now. There is information is already in evidence in Paul's narrative here as he's
- 09:18
- Unfolding his case think of the book of Romans in many ways like a curriculum We're going subject by subject by subject and each of those subject is connected
- 09:28
- So as it unfolds and we get to verses 30 through 32 in Romans 9 there is a conclusion here
- 09:36
- There is a conclusion here. Let me read that into your hearing for the moment What shall we say that Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness laid hold of righteousness?
- 09:47
- Which is laid hold of righteousness even the righteousness which is by faith but Israel Pursuing a law of righteousness did not attain that law.
- 10:00
- Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works
- 10:07
- So we see here the juxtaposition of the Gentiles achieving something that was never intended for them according to Israel and They achieved it by faith
- 10:22
- But Israel the thing that was intended for them did not attain it
- 10:29
- They did not achieve it Because they did not pursue it by faith but as though as Though it were by works
- 10:41
- So you have two classes here the ethnic working and those graced the grace by faith
- 10:49
- Groups see the two groups Gentiles grace and faith Israel ethnic working
- 10:58
- You in the very beginning or appealing to Abraham appealing to all these things Jesus even interacts with them
- 11:04
- So don't don't appeal with your father Abraham I'm able to anyway
- 11:10
- Let's continue on here because I can get really off and left field here If I'm not careful, we have only so much time what then what
- 11:18
- Israel is seeking it has not obtained Keep that in mind here that right here in the same way.
- 11:26
- I'm putting these things here for you for a reason Okay, so what then what Israel is seeking it has not obtained sound familiar
- 11:33
- Yeah, we just read that back in Romans 9 30 through 32 But the chosen obtained it and the rest were hardened now keep in mind something here in this context the
- 11:43
- Correlation is between Israel and Israel. The Gentiles are not yet in view so Paul's discussion at the moment has to do with The people of Israel and the people of God that come out of Israel So the correlation the two groups of you are the chosen and the hardened you see it there the chosen chosen and the hardened
- 12:11
- The correlation has to do with what he's covered there in referring to the 7 ,000 the 7 ,000 are parallel Comparable to those chosen and graced
- 12:30
- The rest that were hardened are comparable to those in first Kings 19 that were purged
- 12:37
- Now you may say to me. Hey, wait a minute rich Paul only refers to the 7 ,000 here.
- 12:44
- He doesn't refer to anyone else and So this idea that you're bringing into the equation into the discussion of those who were purged back in first Kings and second
- 12:56
- Kings and Chronicles Doesn't apply here Well, I asked this question then as we look at the text look at it
- 13:06
- The chosen obtained it We've already seen the parallel reference to the 7 ,000 with reference to the chosen
- 13:17
- They're the ones that obtained it But in Paul's reference if we're just gonna stick with the text of Paul here as the context that he has in mind here
- 13:27
- Who are the hardened? It's not in there but if you do allow him to bookend as We started with Elijah's complaint and we ended with the 7 ,000 and 15 16 and 17 fill in the middle we see his overall point and that is the hardened are
- 13:51
- Comparable to those who were purged in Israel through war through militant overthrow and through prophetic judgment
- 14:00
- Those three things took place and that's the whole parallel being made here Okay, so let's continue on because this is review here.
- 14:09
- So, how are they hardened? the vehicle by which God hardens them is stupor
- 14:16
- Stupor and we're going to see this in the Old Testament here in a moment in Deuteronomy 29 verse 4 if you want to get
- 14:23
- Get started on that Stupor is the means and God is the one who took the action.
- 14:30
- He's the giver See it God gave them
- 14:36
- God took an action by giving them what a spirit of stupor eyes to see not
- 14:44
- Ears to hear not down to this very day See it That's the reference
- 14:50
- Paul is citing in Deuter from Deuteronomy 29 verse 4 Let's go take a look and Moses summoned them and back starting verse 2.
- 15:00
- This is the covenant at Moab Okay, the covenant Moab listen very carefully because it describes for us the situation that Moses faced on the ground and that situation is dire
- 15:13
- So Moses summons all of Israel and he says to them you have seen all that Yahweh did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all of his servants and all his land
- 15:28
- The great trials which your eyes have seen those great signs and wonders
- 15:35
- Consider this with their own eyes. He says You saw this You walk through You you walk through the that water
- 15:47
- You walk through the sea on dry land That doesn't just happen and You saw
- 15:56
- Pharaoh's armies behind you drowned in that sea After you get through they come in and they are drowned.
- 16:05
- You saw all these things with your own eyes So the question here is you would think that they would believe
- 16:14
- But if we go back and look not so much. Okay, but he continues on So we break this down further and I want you to consider this thought here
- 16:24
- I don't want to miss this stop and consider verse 18 from Romans chapter 1 verse 18 through 20 and As as I've got this up here
- 16:36
- I want you to consider this in light of what I'm about to read For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress that the truth in unrighteousness
- 16:51
- Because that which God that which is known about God is evident within them
- 16:58
- For God made it evident to them for since the creation of the world his invisible attributes
- 17:04
- Both his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen being on being understood
- 17:12
- Through what has been made so that they They are without excuse see it
- 17:21
- They were without excuse Let's continue on Yet to this day
- 17:29
- Yahweh, this is Moses speaking to that. We may call them the sons of Israel the sons of Israel Yet to this day
- 17:39
- Yahweh has not given you a heart to know nor eyes to see
- 17:46
- Nor ears to hear Why can't they know? Why can't they see why can't they hear?
- 17:54
- Because he didn't give it to them See it That's the clear case that Moses is making to them the
- 18:04
- I call these things fact statements This is just undeniable. It just it's it's straightforward.
- 18:12
- It is without ambiguity and And that is what Paul is appealing to here, but let's continue on back to Romans 11 beginning of verse 9
- 18:25
- We've got a spirit of stupor on the table already in evidence and now
- 18:30
- David says let their table become a snare and a trap and a stumbling block and a retribution to them
- 18:37
- Let their eyes be darkened to see not and bend their backs forever Paul is again making a connection remind.
- 18:46
- I want to remind you this we're in the context of Israel Versus real
- 18:52
- Israel, we would put Moses in the real Israel category I would hope he would be considered a believer right and there were many believers in Israel and those believers
- 19:02
- Theoretically are leading the nation but then the masses are unbelievers
- 19:09
- So there's that correlation and we talked about Romans 9 6 & 8 all of that children of promise are considered as seed, but let's continue on Let's go back
- 19:22
- Psalm 69 verse 22 through 24 That's the quotation that that Paul is putting into evidence
- 19:31
- So he's putting all these things on the table think of these pieces of evidence that he's putting on the table he's piling them up and he's entering them into evidence before the
- 19:41
- Divine court if you will before the eternal court May their table before them become a snare and when they are in peace may it become a trap sound
- 19:51
- Interesting doesn't this is one of David's imprecatory prayers against his enemies
- 19:56
- Saul's army is pursuing him They're chasing him and he is praying before God that God will have vengeance against them
- 20:06
- That's what's going on here. And Paul is entering this into evidence against the sons of Israel may their eyes darken so that they cannot see and Make their loins quake continually.
- 20:20
- Let them be so afraid that they shake Pour out your indignation on them and may your burning anger
- 20:28
- Overtake them so the imprecatory prayers Paul is using the same categories
- 20:34
- What are those categories who's who here David would be the parallel to the child of promise and Saul's army
- 20:42
- That's right. The Israel not Israel Israel, okay
- 20:47
- So all of these things are entered into evidence here by the Apostle back to the text
- 20:55
- So then what of Israel? Well something to think about as we move forward.
- 21:00
- I want to want you to consider this Just a little review here for you to take a moment here what it sought it does not have
- 21:10
- The chosen do the rest were hardened Deuteronomy 29 for tells us of the source the spirit of stupor and what that looks like Psalms 69 22 through 23 that they be snared they are snared they're trapped
- 21:30
- Stumbling block is before them retribution is before them. They're darkened eyes not to be able to see and Their their backs are bent forever
- 21:43
- Back to verse 11 now in chapter 11 Romans 11. I say that did they stumble as So as to fall
- 21:54
- Good question First of all, we need to ask what does he mean by fall?
- 22:01
- Well as he's using it here It means a collapse a failure ruin did they
- 22:08
- Stumble so as to go into complete ruin. Well as you've noticed here Elijah thought so Elijah thought so he thought he was the only one left that they that the nation of Israel had fallen completely
- 22:25
- He was the only one left all of Israel has turned to Baal and they have forsaken
- 22:31
- Yahweh you see it But here we go again there is that statement of strong negation may it never be
- 22:40
- May Genoita let it have no Genesis Remember the 7 ,000
- 22:46
- Israel stumbled Israel Stumbled but Israel was saved so believing
- 22:55
- Israel is separated out They are the ones who are saved who are spared
- 23:03
- Let's move on I say then okay we but by their transgression
- 23:10
- Salvation has come to the Gentiles So that stumbling has consequences to Israel and God turned to the
- 23:19
- Gentiles Salvation is taken to the Gentiles here and in Acts chapter 10 and in chapter 28 verse 28 of Acts You can look at each of those individually it is stated bluntly
- 23:34
- Salvation has come to the Gentiles to make them jealous to make Israel jealous
- 23:40
- Now we need to talk about jealousy for a second because Paul assigns God's motive in the jealousy
- 23:48
- God's motive here Stated plainly is salvation has come to the
- 23:54
- Gentiles to make the the Jews Israel jealous now if their transgression is riches for the world and Their failure is riches to the
- 24:07
- Gentiles How much more will their fullness? Be let's break that down here.
- 24:14
- Let's go back and take a look at this. Okay? If their transgressions is riches for the world
- 24:19
- So his his analogy here is that adoption and salvation relationship with God that faith
- 24:26
- Relationship is the true wealth of Israel see it that's the riches of Israel and It's now been
- 24:35
- Transferred over into the account of the Gentiles has been transferred over to the Gentiles.
- 24:41
- So it it's to make them jealous the true wealth of Israel has now been given to the
- 24:48
- Gentiles and their failure. It's been given away Their failure is now riches wealth for the
- 24:58
- Gentiles How much more will their fullness be?
- 25:04
- It's been given away to pagans that's the way in which the Israelite would have to see this
- 25:09
- It's been given away to pagans and now they will prosper under the hand of Yahweh So salvation the true wealth of Israel has been given away from but now a warning
- 25:23
- What of the Gentiles we asked before what of Israel will now what of the Gentiles but I am speaking to you who are
- 25:29
- Gentiles I Read my notes here a second. Yep. We all know these things.
- 25:35
- Okay I'm speaking you to you who are Gentiles in as much then as I am an apostle to Gentiles.
- 25:44
- I Magnify my ministry if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen so he's explaining his motive as an apollo's apostle to the
- 25:56
- Gentiles that Part of his motive is that as he ministers to them as he preaches to them as he evangelizes them
- 26:08
- That it will cultivate jealousy in his own countrymen Now there's two two results two potential results in that jealousy
- 26:18
- There's two sides to it number one that it was there would be a vehicle by which to drive them to repentance
- 26:25
- That's what he wants he wants to see his people come to repentance so the first Vehicle of jealousy the first vehicle that jealousy represents is to drive
- 26:38
- Israel to repentance But the second vehicle the second side of that is a vehicle by which to drive them to bitterness
- 26:47
- Consider that as we go on so if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and Save some of them.
- 26:57
- He recognizes that jealousy isn't going to get all of them Okay, but jealousy here is in fact depicted by the
- 27:05
- Apostle as an evangelistic tool It just is in order to save some
- 27:13
- For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world
- 27:20
- Offering some perspective here What will their acceptance be? But life from the dead
- 27:28
- So his desire is that his countrymen and express this in in Romans chapter 9 the beginning of Romans 9
- 27:35
- That was his motivation his overall point there if their rejection
- 27:41
- Results in the reconciliation of the rest of the world and when we talk about the world, I know So many preachers, it's it's everybody every man woman child that ever lived every
- 27:52
- Nate everybody The problem is is that the juxtaposition here as we've laid out you've got the two ethnic groups
- 28:00
- You've got Israel and then you've got the Gentiles. So that category of Gentiles Underneath it is all the nations the people the ethnic groups of all the nations
- 28:13
- So as we break that down we see that It's it's a it's a ethnic thing.
- 28:20
- Not a every man woman and child thing. So the idea here is that Reconciliation of the world all other nations can now be
- 28:30
- Evangelized and brought into the family of God into the promise the group the people of the promise if you will the adoption and the result of their reconciliation they're coming back into Yahweh's fold if you will is life from the dead
- 28:51
- So that tells us where they are right now unconverted they're dead And what will they have if they convert life?
- 28:59
- Eternal life. Okay, laid that all out. Okay, and If the first piece of dough is holy
- 29:13
- Want to talk about this? I know there's a long pause there. We all hate dead air So what is the representative here in this analogy?
- 29:22
- We had two analogies coming up first is the dough analogy and then we have the tree analogy remember
- 29:27
- I've talked about God's olive tree of redemptive history The analogy context of the analogy is that the first piece of dough is chosen thus the lump
- 29:41
- The train of thought is built on God's gracious choice with me So if the first piece of dough is holy the lump is also
- 29:50
- So there's the source and there's the lump It's it's not a
- 29:57
- Thorough analogy, but you get the idea But he's going to get more specific now and if the root is holy now, we transition to the olive tree analogy
- 30:08
- Okay, the root is chosen if the root is holy the branches are too so the
- 30:17
- The holy tree the the flourishing tree if you will as it grows its branches are
- 30:23
- Naturally a part of it. And so the root is chosen and so is the branch but But if some of the branches were broken off and you
- 30:38
- Gentile is remember something I'm speaking right there. Sorry. I'm speaking to you
- 30:44
- Gentiles. That's our context but if some of the branches were broken off and you being a wild olive were grafted in among them and Became a partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree
- 31:01
- Do not boast against the branches We'll think about that a second here. Let's let's walk this back.
- 31:08
- Just a second. Some of the branches are broken off Unholy branches of unbelieving
- 31:16
- Israel, that's what's Reference here have been broken off. Okay wild olive branches
- 31:29
- You Gentiles? Have been grafted in among them You've been mercied
- 31:36
- You've been grafted into the Holy Root And now you are a partaker
- 31:43
- Yeah, and now you are a partaker with them of the rich Richness of the olive tree the rich root of the olive tree.
- 31:52
- So what do we have here? We have wild branches who've been mercied they've been grafted into the
- 31:58
- Holy Root and now they become part of the tree and they flourish and Now they become part of the tree and they flourish
- 32:11
- But do not boast against the branches So there's there's two kinds of branches in view here
- 32:19
- There's the branches the the natural branches that are still there Don't brag about yourself to them and then there's the ones that have been broken off Don't brag to them
- 32:36
- This is nothing to brag about is his point But if you do brag
- 32:44
- But if you do boast against them Remember that it is not you who supports the root but the root
- 32:51
- Supports you you are dependent on the root. This is an admonition to Be humble your place in this tree is by grace
- 33:06
- Through faith and that is a faith that was gifted to you That is and that is a calling you you don't you're you're not a resident here
- 33:18
- Not a natural resident. You don't necessarily belong here. So We recognize that it is the root who support it is is not you the supports the root
- 33:32
- Roots supports you you don't get to bragging. So let's explain this word picture that he's put together here.
- 33:39
- I Described this again is God's olive tree of redemption Romans 9 4 & 5 depicts six categories six
- 33:49
- Six items that belong to Israel the adoption as sons the glory of the covenants the giving of the law temple service and process promises the fathers and The Christ according to the flesh all those things the
- 34:08
- Paul Paul tells us belong to Israel national Israel So as we look at the branches and the fruit there is two kinds of branches in that tree
- 34:24
- Okay the natural believing Israel and the grafted believing
- 34:32
- Gentiles So believing Israel belongs on that tree
- 34:38
- Unbelieving Israel does not belong in that tree. Sorry about that. And so they've been broken off Believing Gentiles have now been grafted in and are flourishing
- 34:50
- So what is the basis of the existence of the tree if we were to give the tree the name a name?
- 34:59
- eschatologically, there is a number of different groups that want to lay hold of this tree and That's this that or the other thing, but the true name of the tree is faith
- 35:11
- They want to put the label Israel on it. Okay, but if you follow Paul's argument here the tree is
- 35:21
- Because of faith The tree is because of belief
- 35:27
- That's the analogy of it you are here because of faith and Belief and That's the whole point of it all and you've been grafted in They are here because of faith and belief
- 35:44
- They got here first Don't you get to brag it? now
- 35:49
- I will say and I want to Let's see here at some point in time.
- 35:56
- I'm gonna introduce this thought but let's let's put a pin in that for a second And keep rolling here And I'm not entirely sure how long
- 36:04
- I've been going but probably about 35 minutes from what I can tell Double check my time here.
- 36:12
- All right, let's keep going You will say that Branches were broken off Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in Wait a minute
- 36:26
- You will say and this is Paul's Paul likes to use a literary device as of the rhetorical skeptic
- 36:33
- You will say to me then we see this in Romans 9 and we see it again here.
- 36:38
- You will say then You wild branch living on the olive tree
- 36:46
- Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in They're out.
- 36:51
- I'm in. What do you want? I'm now one of the kids of the king
- 36:58
- Let's eat drink Mary. Let's eat drink and be merry let's have a party and Those branches on the ground those broken off branches.
- 37:08
- Well Let's despise them Well, you may say that branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in well quite right
- 37:18
- They were broken off for their unbelief, but you
- 37:27
- You stand your standing is by faith You're here by faith
- 37:38
- Not because of your fancy works not because of your fancy clothes
- 37:43
- Not because of your wealth not because of anything that you've done he reminds us how we got here that God took that stony heart and He gave us a heart
- 38:02
- So that we might know He took our eyes and he gave us Spiritual eyes so that we might see he gave us spiritual ears so that we might hear and he gave us faith and So you stand in this position your standing is by faith and that is a gift of God according to Ephesians 2 8 through 10
- 38:25
- But he created you for this purpose So don't be haughty
- 38:31
- Don't be arrogant but fear You should fear
- 38:38
- You need to recognize that you need to be afraid of your fleshly
- 38:44
- Inclinations to brag and to boast and to be haughty now
- 38:52
- There is an entire group of people right now in our day. That is running around drawing disciples after itself
- 39:03
- And that is in the movement of Christian nationalism Christian nationalism in many ways and we'll get much more deep and deeper into this
- 39:13
- When we get to chapter 13 and we'll unpack their misinterpretation their misunderstanding of Romans 13 their
- 39:22
- Misapplication, but here we are here at this point
- 39:29
- Many Many within the Christian nationalist movement are Racially divisive
- 39:37
- They fit what's being described here. They fit it to a tee. They brag about their standing they
- 39:45
- They besmirch Jews They criticize them.
- 39:51
- They talk down about them They're haughty They are haughty and they should be
- 39:58
- Repentant not haughty. They should be looking at these passages and they should fear just exact this this was meant for them and the attitude that they have
- 40:09
- I Watch clips from Joel Webben. I Watch clips from I can't even
- 40:19
- Bear to watch Cory Mahler But it's like guys.
- 40:25
- Did you did you take scissors to Romans 11?
- 40:32
- Did you cut this out of your Bibles? Because this warning is for you
- 40:41
- This warning is for me, too I'm not I shouldn't be looking down on you, but I shouldn't be looking down on anyone for their ethnic background their ethnic history
- 40:53
- I I need to be reminded of how it is. I stand
- 40:59
- Where I stand how it is that I'm part of that olive tree how it is that I've been grafted in It's not of anything
- 41:08
- I did It's not by works. It's not by anything
- 41:14
- Okay So don't be haughty but fear for if God did not spare them
- 41:24
- He won't spare you either See it If you don't you need to stop and you need to take
- 41:31
- Stock here. You need to take spiritual inventory you see your view in the
- 41:39
- Christian nationalist movement is You want to take all these other?
- 41:46
- Ways of thinking and all these other world views in our world and you want to bring them to heal
- 41:53
- And what you don't realize is this is this is saying God will bring you to heal Because when it comes to all of these groups when it comes to the fate of Israel The conclusion how it will unfold what
- 42:08
- God is doing with all of these different people groups around the world Is what
- 42:14
- God's doing not you? Not you You aren't the one in charge he is and so as you arrogantly sit in your comfy chair with your fancy suit and you look at the camera and you
- 42:33
- Talk about how? Superior you are and how we need to bring back all these
- 42:40
- Ideas of a Christian Prince and rule with an iron fist over the world. I Don't see any of that in the
- 42:48
- New Testament anywhere and Yet if we think about it what it is that you want to bring back what you seek to bring back is what we find in first Kings 19
- 43:01
- You seek to engage in a purge a purge that has not been ordered by God See it you see you're not
- 43:12
- Elijah You're not the only one left even though you seem to think you are
- 43:20
- Pardon me. I don't have a cough button over here You aren't the other only one left Just because even though you think you are
- 43:29
- God didn't spare the natural branches and Christian nationalists
- 43:36
- Hear me. He won't spare you either Not if you keep going down this road you will expose yourselves as being fleshly as Following after the deeds of the flesh and having no fruit of the
- 43:52
- Spirit No understanding of the New Testament message no understanding what it means to be a kingdom minister
- 44:02
- Evangelizing calling a lost and dying world unto Christ Through repentance faith belief
- 44:13
- But ultimately God's sovereign grace be being bestowed upon them and That he chooses them you seem to have completely lost sight of this and For you,
- 44:30
- I am deeply troubled Deeply troubled that you sit in the very chair of the one who's being described here
- 44:39
- Sit in the very seat That is truly sad because you should know better So let's move forward
- 44:48
- I've said my piece he won't spare you either guys he won't and we're seeing it in so many as your your spirit of stupor
- 45:00
- Exposes itself more and more and more and more and you daily
- 45:07
- Let it be known What's truly going on inside you that which is dying to get out of you
- 45:16
- You just can't stand the fact that you a year ago or two years ago wanted to say these things out loud
- 45:22
- But you couldn't and now you've gotten to the point where you are so bold you will you're haughty
- 45:30
- You're haughty Let's continue on verse 22 and we will find a place here to to pause here soon
- 45:40
- Behold that the kindness and Severity of God you are no different from them.
- 45:49
- You need to behold it It is the kindness That brought me here.
- 45:55
- It is the kindness of God that drew me to repentance It is the kindness of God that granted me mercy that shows me.
- 46:05
- I Didn't deserve it. I wasn't looking for it and Yet suddenly
- 46:11
- I had that desire for him that unquenchable thirst for the things of God To those who fell to the branches that fell
- 46:27
- Severity, what's the co -relation? branches that fall Correlation in Paul's discussion of this are to the purged in first Kings 19 those to be purged
- 46:41
- But to you 7 ,000 God's kindness and we never must lose sight
- 46:50
- Of what it says in Romans 2 for that the kindness of God is what leads us to repentance
- 46:56
- It is the kindness of God He leads us to repentance through his kindness and Romans 3 9
- 47:03
- Paul asked the question Are we better than they know we're not? There's so much loaded in here
- 47:12
- We have Elisha Elijah Elisha Elisha Hazel Jehu wore the 7 ,000 we have
- 47:21
- God's mercy and kindness and we have God's hardening behold the kindness and severity of God To those who fell his severity but to you his kindness if you continue in his kindness if You continue in his kindness
- 47:48
- If you don't Otherwise you will also be cut off.
- 47:58
- I advise you to go to 2nd Corinthians 13 5 Test yourself see if you're actually in the faith
- 48:08
- Take this passage seriously You are no better than they I'm no better than they
- 48:15
- I needed God's kindness. I needed God's mercy and I need to live accordingly as I Interact with the world around me that yes
- 48:30
- In these people need Christ, they don't need they don't need a
- 48:37
- Christian Prince to rule over them with an iron fist. They don't need They don't need the sacralism
- 48:49
- Sacralists would probably burn me at the stake. Anyway, give me my third baptism their posers
- 48:55
- Posers actors on a stage acting out the works righteousness Just like Israel did
- 49:05
- Trying to reimpose a law that they think will somehow impress God Romans 930
- 49:13
- Explains that situation doesn't it? They didn't impress
- 49:18
- God Because it didn't do it by faith. The sacralist didn't do it by faith.
- 49:25
- Don't tell me they did They were actors Going back falling back into the same vomit that Israel had fallen into Think on that.
- 49:40
- All right. I'm sorry great sermons sermons over here Let's find a place to put a pin in this and they also if they do not continue in their
- 49:49
- Unbelief will be grafted right back in. That's the thing you guys overlook is That there's a hope of evangelism a
- 50:00
- Hope of repentance If they don't continue in their unbelief
- 50:05
- God will graft them back in Because God is able to graft them in again.
- 50:12
- He's able to do all of this and Yet you guys are so impatient with God.
- 50:18
- You want to just take things into your own hands? You want to take things into your own hands
- 50:24
- Because he's just not doing it fast enough And there's no solution.
- 50:30
- There's there's no hope. They're only the Iron -fisted tyranny that you seek over People that were trying to evangelize or if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree and Were grafted contrary to the nature nature into a cultivated olive tree
- 50:56
- How much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree
- 51:05
- God's able to save them God's able to save Anyone he so chooses to say and for all of you if you don't know
- 51:17
- God in a personal way if you haven't come to know Jesus Christ as your Savior your
- 51:23
- Lord and Savior and you don't know what to do. I tell you cry to God for mercy
- 51:31
- Cry to God for mercy and he will hear you. He will hear you well folks,
- 51:42
- I Hope to be able to do another episode next week I do these as best
- 51:48
- I can as as I can find time as you can see by these Slides that I put up here it takes a lot of work to put all this together so that it maps out just right and The points that I'm trying to make over here as we follow along with the text.
- 52:06
- I can keep track of them and and and follow the logic follow the case that the
- 52:15
- Apostle is making and so with that we will Conclude our study for today.
- 52:21
- We'll pick up with I believe verse 25 next week. Of course, I will obviously have to perform a
- 52:29
- Some level of a review here, but I've spoken much more
- 52:36
- Interacted with the text much more in this episode and I hope to be able to do that more in the future But again when there are times when we do these heavy -duty look backs it and it requires a lot of reading
- 52:47
- That's gonna be the bulk of that show, but that's really important that we do that, right? Oh, and by the way, you may notice personal note here
- 52:56
- You ever have a situation like I did a couple of three days ago Where it just occurred to me that the glasses that I've been wearing for the last year and a half
- 53:06
- Suddenly seemed a little blurry. I don't know why just a little bit blurry They had changed my prescription the last time around and I thought hmm.
- 53:15
- I wonder Have my eyes gotten worse or did they go back to where they were in the previous prescription?
- 53:22
- Well, guess what clear as a bell. Here's my old glasses and so I'm not that fond of how they look on me, but they're clear
- 53:32
- I can see clearly and so that's that's what's going on there, but you may also notice a few changes to the
- 53:40
- Way the which the lens is working on the camera here I've made some changes there as well.
- 53:45
- I just have to keep tinkering with things James will tell you I can't leave things well enough alone But I just want to get it right.
