Did Jesus Proclaim to Spirits Imprisoned in Hell?

We read in 1 Peter 3, 18 -20, For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey when

God's patience waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared. Now there are some who take this sentence to mean that Jesus descended into hell, but as we've examined before that's a false teaching.

While on the cross Jesus told the thief next to him, today you will be with me in paradise. His last words were, it is finished.

The work of atonement was done. He had no reason to descend into hell. Though his body died, his spirit did not, which

Peter states here. So what does it mean that he proclaimed to the spirits in prison? The best understanding comes from Jesus' account of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16.

The rich man who cared for no one but himself died and went to a place of torment, while Lazarus, when he died, was carried by angels to Abraham's side.

From there the rich man was able to look across whatever chasm it was that separated them, and Abraham proclaimed to him why he was there.

In the same way, Jesus, when he died, ascended into paradise. And like Abraham and the rich man,

Jesus testified to the souls in torment that because they would not listen to the prophets, for those in the time of Noah, that would have been

Noah himself, then they also would not have believed in Jesus. All who believe in Jesus Christ will have eternal life.
