Well, we're going to try a little experiment this morning. It might flop and I will take full credit for it. But if it does well, I'll also take the credit. But what I'm going to do is as we go into our lesson this morning I have a few three men who as we share from as you share comments or questions.
Or if I have you read verses. What I want to do is give you a mic so it can pick up your voice. So online when you listen to the lesson, there's not long pauses of silence, so we'll give it a try and see what happens.
Okay. Today's lesson the Holy Spirit. Reconcili, sorry sanctification and you Talking about sanctification. We talk a lot here about Justification and I wanted to highlight a little bit on sanctification.
We believe of course in the triune God. One God in three persons father son and Holy Spirit had an interesting interesting conversation with a customer of mine at work who was trying to Quote unquote witness to my co-worker and I realized where he was coming from.
So I wanted to set the record straight so I asked him at one point. I said do you believe who is Jesus talking to when he was praying? Was he talking to the father was he talking to himself who was he talking to when he said on the cross my god my God, why have you forsaken me?
And then we got into talking about the Holy Spirit if he was truly a person and. So this person does not believe in the Trinity. So we got an interesting conversation with that. So this morning I want to look at the Holy Spirit his role in our sanctification.
In our role in that whole process, but let me start by asking a simple question. Somebody comes to you and asks you explain to me or define for me in one sentence Sanctification, what would you say to them and I have raise your hand and I'll get the mics to you.
What is sanctification? Everyone's being sanctified. So nobody wants to answer Bob. Very good becoming more and more like Jesus Christ. Very good. Somebody else nobody else. Okay, well the term sanctification.
Then the Greek ayahs mos Comes from the same word that the term Holy Spirit is from it means to be made holy literally ayahs is holy. So it's literally the work of the Holy Spirit the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit.
That he works in our lives to make us holy by conforming us to the likeness of Jesus Christ. But there's also some role that we play in the process of sanctification. There let me ask you this see if you know this there are four direct commands in Scripture that relate to our Responsibility towards the third member of the Trinity the Holy Spirit.
Four commands that tell us what we are to do in response to the Holy Spirit. Can any of you name any of them don't if you know them all four don't write on them off. If you're be if you were in my IBS class, you're excluded from answering this now.
Four commands one at a time. Yes, Erickson. Do not greet grieve. Not the Holy Spirit. Do you know the reference? Can you tell me the Testament just kidding? It's in Ephesians could very good grieve. Not the Holy Spirit.
Very good Erickson anybody else. Gary's got one right here. Thanks, Eric. Walk in the spirit. Very good. Walk in the spirit Galatians 516. Grieve not the spirit walk in the spirit. There are two more Pray in the spirit.
Yeah, that's in Ephesians It relates to the Holy Spirit directly that the Holy Spirit is mentioned. How about in Ephesians also grieve not the Holy Spirit, but be what. Oh Be filled with us the Holy Spirit elder per deep.
Thank you Ephesians 518 and there's one more do not Quench or put out the spirits fire. Okay first Thessalonians 519 so there are four four commands as It relates to our response to the third member of the Trinity the Holy Spirit.
So with two of them from a positive light Walk in the spirit Galatians 516 and be filled with the spirit. Those are from a positive standpoint and from a negative standpoint do not grieve the spirit and also that's Ephesians 430 and Do not quench the Holy Spirit or do not put out the spirits fire first Thessalonians 519.
You guys can rest if you want. Eric sitting down. So that's good. So when we have some more participation, we'll have some people read verses. And if you have questions at any point as always feel free to raise your hand or any comments.
I want us to look at each of them. We'll probably not be able to cover all of them today each of those four commands and unpack What those mean for us in our daily Christian living as we are continually being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
So we'll continue it next week, but let's turn to Galatians 5 and we'll start walking by the Spirit. Galatians chapter 5. But before I get into the details of this particular one, I just want to give you some Presuppositional principles before we get into these Four commands as it relates to our response to the Holy Spirit the third member of the Trinity.
For overarching principles that relates to all of these commands. The first one is this. In salvation, we are passive recipients of the work of the Spirit. But in sanctification we are active participants in Salvation.
I'll repeat we are passive recipients of the work of the Holy Spirit. But in salvation, we are active in sanctification rather we are active participants for example in salvation. How are we passive recipients when Jesus for instance told Nicodemus you must be born again.
He specified that clearly as being born of the Spirit, right? That's why the Apostle John said in John 1 13 those who are born not of the will of man nor flesh. But born of God, it's a work of the Holy Spirit.
That's Regeneration, we are passive recipients of the work of the Spirit in regeneration. We are also passive recipients when it comes to effectual calling that's the inner call of the Spirit of God not the external call of the preacher the evangelist who Invites people to come to Christ to trust and put their faith in Christ and repent and turn to him as Lord and Savior.
This is the inner call of the Holy Spirit. That takes a dead person who is not only unable to come to Christ But unwilling to come to Christ and makes them willing that's completely a work of the Holy Spirit.
Have nothing to do with it. Passive recipients the indwelling of the Holy Spirit when he regenerates. One of the blessings of Salvation when he regenerates us as he comes and indwells us. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Baptizing work of the Holy Spirit. He baptizes us. He identifies us with the body of Christ. So we are members of the body and the ceiling of the spirit which will get into a little more detail when we discuss in Ephesians 4 not grieving the Holy Spirit all those are Things that the Holy Spirit does in his ministry to us and we have passive recipients of them.
But in sanctification as he works in us to make us more holy like Jesus Christ. We are active participants and obviously just the fact that these four passages of scripture. We're going to look at our imperatives their commands, which brings me to the second overarching principle.
So the first one was that we are passive recipients in salvation of the work of the Spirit, but in sanctification. We are active participants. Number two. General principle that covers all these commands as in any other command in scripture.
Disobeying and this command would be a sin. That's basically what sin is as God commands us to do or not do something. It is sin, but the great thing about commands in scripture is our motivation for them is out of love.
If you love me, Jesus said you are what? Keep my commandments. 1st John 5 3 his commandments are not burdensome. So the viewer parents understand when you ask your children to do something, you know, huh?
I Don't really relate to that because my children always do what I tell them to do. So this these are commands in scripture positive commands negative commands and to obey them or to disobey them would be sin.
Third. These commands do not occur in a vacuum. Walked by the Spirit be filled with the Spirit. Do not grieve the Spirit do not quench or put out the Spirit's fire. They don't occur in a vacuum and as we will see as we get into the details.
But it happens to be true of all of them. They affect other members in the body of Christ. They don't happen in a vacuum and. Fourthly, this is interesting, especially in our day and age number four overarching principle.
There is no step-by-step process. So if you want me to tell you walk by the Spirit step number one do this. Step number two do this. Step number three do this. None of these passages do that. But instead what you will see they do is they simply state.
When you do walk by the Spirit or are filled with the Spirit they show us the manifestation of those things. How will you know if you're walking by the Spirit? How will you know if you're filled with the Spirit or how will you know when you're grieving the Spirit and we see the manifestations?
Of those Specific commands. Okay, any questions or comments on those four overarching principles? Okay. Got a mic there. Thanks Eric Erickson.
Mm-hmm. That's fine. Yes, yes.
Yes. That's a good question. Come back next week or maybe in July. No. That's a great question. Colossians 2 7 is the passage. You want to answer that Bruce? Go ahead. You got a mic right there. Yes. Yeah.
Definitely it you can also reference it with 2nd Corinthians 5 where it says for we walk not by sight but by faith. Another good one is Galatians and we can get into it more. I do want it, but I want to answer your question look into the more details of that later on but I Mean you listen to the Apostle Paul Galatians 2 20 right classic.
I have been crucified with Christ and I Paul I no longer live. Okay, you just told me Paul that you no longer live because you've been crucified with Christ in the very same verse the next sentence. But the life I live.
He says the life I live I live by faith in the Son of God who gave himself up for me. So on the one hand he's been crucified with Christ. He no longer lives, but the life he lives now as a Christian. He lives how by faith the same way we receive Christ by faith.
Biblical faith not just a mental ascent to a set of facts, but biblical faith. We are to continue to walk in him by faith. Yes, so, of course, we know that a person won't even receive Christ by faith won't turn to Christ as Lord and Savior.
Unless of the work the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. So as we receive him by faith. We are to continue to walk by faith in Christ. Exactly. All right. Galatians 5 who would like to read verse 16 for us.
This is the first command and I raise your hand and we'll get a mic to you. Well right there. Thanks Brian. Thank you. So there's the command walk by the Spirit. It's an imperative. To walk by the Spirit why.
Because then you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Give you a little overview of this passage. Hopefully we'll get into the second one. But if not, we'll cover the rest next week because this is the loaded section.
I want to unpack this for you a little bit typical Pauline epistle. Most of Paul's letters are split in half. He has a doctrinal section in the practical section in Galatians. The break is really interesting chapter 1 through chapter 2 verse 14.
Of course, we know the chapters are not inspired. But if you go from beginning of the book to chapter 2 verse 14 is the personal section. He talks about his testimony and how God had called him to the ministry.
And then he talks about we read in there about his personal rebuke of Peter. So there's a lot of personal material in there from chapter 1 to chapter 2 14 from chapter 2 verse 15 on is the doctrinal Section it reads a lot like Romans as pastor.
Mike's been taking us through the book of Romans justification by faith alone not by works of the law from chapter 2 15. Through chapter the end of chapter 4 and then beginning in chapter 5. Where Erickson just read our verse?
Chapters 5 and chapter 6 is the practical section of the book. So I want you to note it's very interesting that this command to walk by the Spirit of God is Not in the doctrinal section. It's in the practical section of the book.
Actually, that's why he begins in chapter 5 for freedom Christ has set us free stand firm. Therefore the therefore is a should be a clue to you that he's basing it on everything. He has just taught doctrinally in the previous couple of chapters.
But let's see. Where does he introduce the Holy Spirit now? You know the thrust of the book of Galatians just to make sure we see it in in the flow of the book. If I chapter 1 right or an angel from heaven Paul includes himself should come and preach to you a different gospel.
Let him be what a cursed anathema very strong word. So Paul is presenting them to them the gospel talking about justification by faith. But then he brings the Holy Spirit into the picture. So if I could have somebody read the first time he mentions the Holy Spirit is in chapter 3 so if you would turn to chapter 3 Galatians is interesting because I you read you read Paul's letters and the tone he uses in certain letters.
I we've been doing well, we finished Philippians with a college and career group and his tone there is so gentle and so pastoral. I Long with for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. Not quite.
So with this book. Notice how he addresses him if I could have somebody read the first three verses of chapter 3 and we'll get you a mic. Right there. Thanks, Eric. Thank you. Excellent. So notice what he said.
Well twice. He calls them foolish. And why does he call him foolish? Did you receive verse to the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? That's his argument from chapter 2 that we are justified not right by works of the law.
But by faith in Christ alone and now he brings the Holy Spirit into the picture. You didn't begin that way. Why are you are you so foolish? You're now being perfected by the flesh rather than the Spirit.
Then he continues let's jump to chapter 4. Second time he highlights the Holy Spirit chapter 4. Verses 5 and 6 if I can have somebody read that this is the second time he Fred right here. Thanks that Brian.
I appreciate it verses 5 and 6. Thank you. Sounds like Romans 8 no sent the spirit of his son into our hearts. We cry out Abba Father. So now we jump this just to show you where the Holy Spirit Paul mentions him and then he gets into chapter 5 here and he gets into the direct command that we mentioned that Will read for us in chapter 5 verse 16.
That's the big picture of Galatians. Now. Let me show you this this command. Where is it found in chapter 5? I want you to notice as we said earlier That these commands all four of them as it relates to our response to the Holy Spirit are not in a vacuum.
And Notice how they're not in a vacuum. I'll have a couple of people read the beginning of this section of chapter 5 somebody if they can read verse 13 of chapter 5 and then verse 15 verse 13 and 15 of chapter 5.
Gary. Thank you. Thank you. And then at the end of the chapter verse 26 verse 26 chapter 5 verse 26 and then chapter 6 verse 2. Chapter 5 26 and chapter 6 verse 2. Brian, thanks. Bruce got that. Thank you.
Thank you. So verse 16 is found in between those it's like those are bookends to this particular section of Scripture. Notice how many times Paul mentions one another? Five times verse 13 once verse 15 twice verse 26 once chapter 6 verse 2 once.
One another one another one another. Over and over again, and this is the context of which he's talking about the command to walk by the Spirit. The conclusion then is obvious. The command to walk by the Spirit cannot be done in a vacuum like any of the other commands as it relates to the Spirit.
But it affects one another. It affects one another. So as the command in verse 16 is to walk by the Spirit and we will not gratify the desires of the flesh and then he lists from verse 19 through 21 the desires of the flesh and.
Then from verse 22 on he lists the fruit of the Spirit. In other words. They are in total contrast because he says in verse 22, but in contrast to the desires of flesh. This these this is the fruit of the Spirit.
So is Paul here proposing there are two types of Christians two groups of Christians are there three classes of humanity. They're unbelievers and then two types of believers. Maybe the believers who are characterized by the deeds or the desires of the flesh.
We can label us carnal and those who are characterized by the fruit of the Spirit. We may label as Spiritual or mature Christians. Is that what Paul is saying here? If somebody could read with me at the end of the list of the desires of the flesh, what does he say?
Verse 21 if somebody can read chapter 5 verse 21. Go ahead Brian. You can use your mic. Thank you. So he's given the command to these Galatian Believers and he says I want you to walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
But he says at the end of the desires of the flesh, I warned you as Brian read that those who do such things the operative term is do it's the idea of continual practice if You were to come with me, for example Flying in a helicopter.
I don't have a helicopter. But if I did I now would to take you and I take you over a forest. That is labeled a Christian forest a forest that has been regenerated by the Spirit of God complete work of salvation.
You would see abundance of fruit. You would see trees that were full of color. Then when I would land our helicopter and we'd walk through that forest. We'd see some rotten wood there. The sin that still prevails until glory now if you were to come with me in my helicopter and We fly over a force that has not been regenerated by the Spirit of God.
The big picture is you would see dead trees no life because there is no life. There hasn't been regeneration. So what Paul is saying here to the believers? I want you to walk by the Spirit. So that you will not gratify the desires of the flesh and this is the list of the desires can a believer Manifest these in life.
Yes, that's what he commands walk by the Spirit. But then he gives us a warning at the end, but if this is your continual practice Then don't deceive yourself. You will not inherit the kingdom of God.
This is consistent with the rest of the New Testament. For example, the Apostle John At the very beginning of his first epistle says that if you say you have no sin you are a liar and the truth is not in you and Yet in chapter 3 John says that The one who has the seat of God does not keep on sinning.
There has been a Change wrought by the Spirit of God. Now, how do we know that you are walking or we are walking by the Spirit of God? What's the manifestation of it? Let's read if somebody can read actually we just Gary read it earlier Verse 15 I'll just reiterate it but if you bite and devour one another watch out that you're not consumed by one another, but I Say walk by the Spirit.
So the bud has given us a direct contrast to what he just said. How do I know first of all, I'll give you three manifestations. How do you know that you're walking by the Spirit? Well when you're not biting and devouring one another and when you're not consumed by one another I don't care how charismatic a church is.
But if there's biting and devouring conception of one another they are not walking by the Holy Spirit. To walk by the Holy Spirit is not to manifest what Paul talked about in verse 15. He's contrasting what he just said by introducing verse 16 with the word, but Secondly, what's another way obviously that we know we are walking by the Spirit.
I'll open this up for questions. So the first manifestation is in contrast to verse 15. We're not biting and devouring one another. That's how we know we're walking by the Spirit. How else will you know you're walking by the Spirit based on this passage?
Any thoughts or comments? We have a hand there Gary. Thanks, Eric. Very good not fulfilled the lust of the flesh. It's right. There's a cause and effect relationship. It's causal walk by the Spirit. You will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
But instead what will we manifest? If we're not fulfilling the lust of the flesh what will be manifest in our lives. Fruit of the Spirit exactly love joy. Peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness and self-control.
Those are the fruit of the Spirit. Thoroughly, let me give you a third one, which is interesting because it's in within the same section. Even though we said the chapters are broken up. Look at chapter 6 verse 1.
We haven't read that verse particularly if somebody can read that for me Chapter 6 verse 1. Thanks, Eric. Thank you caught in transgression restore him in a spirit of gentleness, this is parallel to Christ's words in Matthew 18 on church discipline the point of all of that is to restoration.
If your brother sins, what do you do talk to somebody else about him? Tell him let's pray for him. No, you go to your brother. You go to your brother and you talk to him or your sister and and if he listens Jesus says you've won him over in Matthew and this is the point Paul is making is to restore somebody not to excommunicate them.
So a manifestation of walking by the Spirit. Yes is not devouring one another and biting one another. It's not Demonstrating the desires of the flesh but the fruit of the Spirit rather but it's also being consistent in church.
Discipline to restore those in the spirit of gentleness. That's the whole point of it. That's walking by the Spirit. Remember the Spirit of God is the one who has placed us into the body of Christ. 1st Corinthians 12 13 the classic passage chapter 12 of 1st Corinthians talks about spiritual gifts and how the I can't say to the foot I don't need you.
No, we all need each other and it says in verse 13 there that by the Spirit of God We have all been baptized into one body. It's not talking about believers baptism. It's talking about how the Spirit has identified us in Regenerating us.
He's placed us into the body of Christ. And so we are members one of another. So when we bite or devour one another when we don't try to restore one another we know. We're not walking by the Spirit Bruce.
Go ahead. Yes. Exactly. Yes, excellent. Yes, it's not workspace on the law. I'm very good which picks up as Good point. Bruce picks up from Paul's argument from chapter 2 justified by Faith not by the law.
Have you been perfected by the Spirit now? You're being you've been saved by the Spirit of God now you're being perfected by the flesh. Any other comments or questions on that? Okay, so that's how you know, you're walking by the Spirit.
These things will be manifest in your life. It's not done in a vacuum. Okay, we have time for maybe one more. Let's look at a Ephesians. Ephesians chapter 5. Verse 18, this is the one that elder Pradeep mentioned.
I believe be filled with the Spirit. Command it's an imperative again. It's addressed to us. We are to walk by the Spirit and We are to be filled with the Spirit. Some have somebody read verse 18, please who would like to read that and then I'll ask you based upon verse 18.
What does it mean based upon the scripture? What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit? Yes. Thank you. So anyone what so do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.
It's making a comparison there. So what would it mean to be filled with the Spirit based on the scripture? Brian to be controlled by the Spirit very simply. When you're drunk with wine, you've lost control.
And of course somebody who's charismatic a pentecostal will say, you know, if you're filled with the Spirit It's losing control and gyrating and doing a bunch of other things. That's not what Paul is saying here when you're drunk with wine.
You have no control the the wine is controlling you. So in in comparison to be filled with the Spirit is to be under his control. Does that mean I have to wait for a second work of grace is the spirits work at regeneration not enough?
Do I have to experience a second blessing of some sort? Absolutely, not. Peter says that God has given us everything second. Peter 1 3 pertaining to life and godliness. It's interesting that in as Paul does commonly in Ephesians and we know from chapter 1 Verses 3 to 14 in the original Greek.
It's one sentence. From verses 3 to 14 of chapter 1 and he does the same thing here in chapter 5 verse 18 through 21 is one sentence in the original verse 18 through 21 one sentence. So how do I know I'm?
Being filled with the Spirit based upon these verses that are really one sentence together. How do I know I'm being filled with the Spirit? How do I know I'm under his control? From verse 19 through 21 that'll give us a clue.
What are some manifestations of being filled with the Spirit based upon the text? The way we address each other pastor Bob said verse 19 the way we address again watch address one another. How do we address one another excellent?
Is there a hand there Erickson? Okay, so we've got two do we have three a third one on that one going once going twice. No pastor Steve good. So the way we address one another notice. It's not in a vacuum.
I'm filled in the Spirit. I'll stay at home and listen to somebody on TV on Sunday, it's not in a vacuum. How do we address one another in Psalms hymns and spiritual songs? What's another evidence that we have filled with the Spirit also in verse 19?
Being thankful to God. Thankfulness. Very good verse 20 giving. Thanks sometimes right Bob. Just sometimes not always always. How can you do that always. I mean this sounds? Impossible. What is God asking of us the Holy Spirit giving?
Thanks always excellent. Another one is from verse 19 again making melody to the Lord with your heart. Joy. Make a melody to the Lord with your heart full of joy, and what's the last one verse 21? There's no no word in our culture.
Submission submitting to One another of course we can look at Hebrews 13 17 submitting to the local body of elders and leaders in the church, but submission because submission is not What we would do normally?
Only as we're filled by the Spirit the Spirit is Controlling us will be willing to submit to one another so it's not a step-by-step process. Step one do this step to do this. How do I know I'm under the Spirits control the way?
I address my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Am I thankful even in difficult circumstances. Am I joyful making melody in my heart to the Lord. Am I willing to submit? That's a work of the Spirit of God.
Let me give you one more go ahead. Question we got a question. Thank you Eric. Mm-hmm, so was I. Yeah, I could surprise you. Well submit submission in Scripture obviously is first and foremost to the Lord Jesus Christ because today.
Right well, I'm gonna get to. Well, I'm getting there I'm getting there it begins all always because the net very next verse. After we have to always take it in context submit to one another then it describes Husbands and wives wives submit to your own husbands as to the Lord.
So when we submit first and foremost is as unto the Lord then submission within the body happens. Hebrews 13 verse 17 Obey your leaders and submit to what their authority it says so the leaders the pastors and the elders that God has Set for his local body we are to submit so if I don't agree with something That the leadership has said or done if it's unbiblical of course if we come out and say you know We don't believe in the triune God basic Non-negotiables of our faith we believe salvation by works not by faith.
Then I would say you know if the if you're in a church that they believe in Those things that are not basic to our Christian tenets, then there might be something to consider to leave. But if it's something in terms of polity and stuff like that if a person doesn't agree.
They can go and approach the leadership and talk to them about it. But they will ultimately need to be willing to submit to that submit. Mm-hmm mm-hmm. Yes, yeah, it's not. Yeah, it's not it's if I can I If I can interject when submission again always goes as to the Lord.
So are we not willing to submit to the Lord because he is more than gracious. More than generous to us as our as our Lord and Savior so submission first because it's always the way I submit to one another.
Or to my or the wife submitting to the husband or the church submitting to the leadership is Always how we submit to the Lord and the Lord is always gracious and generous and loving towards his children.
So that's the way we that's the attitude. We were supposed to have it's not blind submission as I said. If there's an issue that somebody would have that wants to bring it before the leadership. They're welcome to do that.
It's not blind submission if there was like I said I've no people in other churches who are just submitting because they've been there. But the church for example does not believe in the Trinity for example or believes in a workspace salvation.
Well, then that person needs has the right to approach the leadership in a right manner in private and talk to them say, you know. From what I see in Scripture and what we are teaching here. It's not consistent and so I can't continue to submit to that if it's not consistent with Scripture.
Well, let's let's move on. Those are some some some good comments. Submitted to left and right. Uh, there you go. How practical can you get there? Let me do this as we close. This is very very interesting.
Stay in Ephesians 5 well, some of you stay in Ephesians 5 and. And then some of you if you want. Let's say this site stays in Ephesians 5 and I'm gonna have you all over this side turns to Colossians chapter 3.
Okay turns to Colossians chapter 3 and we'll finish with this and then next week we'll get into the the other two commands. Of our response to the Holy Spirit. So again, we're still looking about being filled with the Spirit.
We address one another with Psalms hymns Thanksgiving joy submission to one another and then this last one we'll see as we compare these two parallel passages okay, so five I'm gonna have the. This side is in Ephesians.
Rather than having the guys run around. I'm just gonna have the Colossians group read from Colossians. But Ephesians 519 as we saw it talks about Psalms Hymns and spiritual song. Can somebody read Colossians 316 on this side?
Who's got collage pastor Dave? Thank you. So we see the same thing as in Ephesians 518. Then in 520 it talks about his brother Bob mentioned giving thanks Thanksgiving verse 17 somebody reverse 17 and Colossians 3.
Thank you Thanksgiving then Ephesians 5 verses 22 on wives submit to your husbands as to the Lord husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her from chapter 5 of Ephesians verse 22 to verse 33 the end of the chapter.
It's about husband-wife relationship and then Colossians chapter 3 those of you are in Colossians. If you look at verse 18 to 19, right? That's about husband and wife right there chapter 6. Verses 1 to 3 the Ephesians group.
I'll just ask you without reading just you can read it yourself. What is he what kind of relationship is he talking about there Paul chapter 6 1 to 3? Parent child. Colossians chapter 3 verse 20 parent child, yes parent child chapter 6 verse 4 of Ephesians.
Fathers do not exasperate your children. It's addressing the fathers chapter 3 verse 21 of Colossians. Who is he addressing their? Fathers. Well, you guys are good. You're sharp. Chapter 6 of Ephesians verses 5 to 9.
He's addressing slave master relations, right? Colossians chapter 3 verse 21 actually into chapter 4 verse 1. You will see he is also addressing slave master relations. So there's a direct parallel between all of this and what does each section begin with?
Well, obviously in our current passage, we're looking at chapter 5 verse 18 begins with be filled with the Spirit. What does Colossians chapter 3 begin with. Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly.
Who's the author of Scripture? The Spirit of God. So a fourth manifestation or a fifth. I don't know where we on the list of being filled with the Spirit is being filled with the Word of God. A Spirit filled Christian is a word filled Christian.
The two go hand in hand. Okay, any last comments or questions on walking by the Spirit or being filled with the Spirit. Yes, pastor Bob. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Thank you for that word. Hebrews 10 14. Well, let me close in a word of prayer.
Thank you father for The Holy Spirit. We thank you that he is a real person. That we are have directives in Scripture and how to respond to him to walk by the Spirit to be filled with the Spirit and the way we know is from The evidences that we see that the Spirit of God produces in our lives.
And we thank you that even though those might not always appear as pastor Bob mentioned that you are still at work. You are who the one who has perfected us. You are still in the process of sanctifying us making us holy and we thank you for that.
We want to give you all the glory for your work in our lives in Christ's name. Amen.
