- 00:20
- Hey, good evening. This is truth in love. I'm so thankful that You are joining me to share
- 00:27
- God's Word together to talk about things going on in the world I'm not the I'm not the expert.
- 00:33
- I'm not the go -to person I see things and just like you I want to have a conversation about it And I'd love for you to have that conversation with me
- 00:41
- Tonight I'm going to talk about things that I've been seeing in the world just to have a conversation about it Like I said, I'm not the expert.
- 00:47
- I'm not the go -to person just want to have a conversation Tonight if I can pray for you, I'd love to be able to do that Just let me know.
- 00:54
- All you have to do is type me. You don't have to tell me what's going on I'd love to be able to pray for you if you're so inclined.
- 01:01
- I would appreciate it. You would if you would heart On whatever you're you're watching on if you would give a hard comment.
- 01:10
- Let me know that you're watching so that we can use this platform to Reach our community and and share the
- 01:19
- Word of God together and share Jesus with one another I get truth in love from Ephesians chapter 4 verse 15
- 01:25
- Paul tells us but speaking of the truth in love We are to grow up in all aspects into him. Who is the head even
- 01:31
- Christ? So that's been my goal is to speak truth speak truth and love and We want to grow up in Christ.
- 01:41
- Hey Deontay. I hope you're doing well Looking forward to our time together in a couple weeks where we have another question and answer panel if you
- 01:53
- If you'll keep that in mind mark your calendar, we're going to have another question and answer panel Discussion and I'm so looking forward to it.
- 02:01
- It's gonna be a great time with brothers in Christ as we get started
- 02:06
- I want to I wanted to go back to our discussion Saturday with Dan and Just bring out one more thing
- 02:16
- It was probably clear and and I know we discussed it thoroughly But I just wanted to reiterate one thing about our discussion.
- 02:24
- We talked about what does it mean to abide in Christ? What does that look like?
- 02:30
- Because what we're doing is we're following along a program My pastor is putting together called multiply pastor
- 02:37
- Tommy Hullett. He's putting this program together And what he's doing he's taking Matthew 28 where we usually talk about that's that's the go -to verses for the
- 02:47
- Great Commission and and so he's he's taking that and he is he's taking a very important part of it where Jesus says teach them to observe all that I've commanded and then the question therefore is what is
- 03:04
- Jesus commanded and That's what he's looking at and and that's what we're following following his program.
- 03:10
- What are the commands? What are the teachings of Jesus and we want to talk about what what they mean?
- 03:15
- What do they look like from a biblical standpoint? The one that we talked about Saturday was abide what does it mean to abide in Christ and just one one last thing that I wanted to say about that was when we
- 03:30
- When we think about what the word abide means one thing that comes to mind that I would assume would be a common understanding or One way that we would look at abide
- 03:46
- Would be that we are We are enjoying the fellowship of Jesus.
- 03:54
- We are sitting at his feet. We are spending time with him For example like in our personal
- 04:00
- Bible study we spend time Looking at God's Word studying God's Word meditating on God's Word.
- 04:07
- We'll spend time in prayer We will go to church. We will sing worship songs.
- 04:12
- We'll do that at church. We'll do that in the car wherever that may be Maybe we view abide as in that time that we spend with Jesus whether it be in his word or when prayer or in song
- 04:26
- We're having a discussion with someone else Where iron is sharpening iron and we're having a discussion about Scripture and what it means
- 04:34
- But I think that's that's sometimes what we can think of when we think of the word abide abiding in Christ is spending time with him and In physically in the physical world spending time with him happens in those places but what we need to understand from Scripture when it comes to abide and abiding in Christ and Jesus in John 15 gives that example of Of the vine and the branches the branch is attached to the vine to the source where it gets its nutrients and and spending time the branch spending time with the vine is
- 05:17
- Being attached to the vine so when we think about abiding in Christ what we do in the physical world spending time with Jesus and and the
- 05:26
- Sunday school answer is Read your Bible pray go to church sing worship do those things
- 05:34
- There's a detachment there where we we spend time with We live like a dualistic life.
- 05:42
- We we spend time with Jesus Doing those things but then we have other areas of our life and that's where I wanted to make sure that there was no confusion because in the example that Jesus gives in John 15 when he's
- 05:56
- Talking about abiding in him The branch is attached to the vine.
- 06:02
- So we are to be attached abiding in Christ When we're reading his word praying going to church singing worshiping
- 06:12
- But when we are at home, we are attached to Christ when we are at work
- 06:17
- We are attached to Christ when we are at play entertainment
- 06:23
- Wherever we are 24 -7 if we are a branch and We are abiding in Christ.
- 06:30
- We are attached to him wherever we go and we need to release this this misconception of a body in Christ and thinking about that Sunday school answer where we
- 06:43
- Read God's Word pray sing worship go to church and then we have other areas of our life
- 06:49
- We are attached to Jesus everywhere we go and whatever we do. And so I just wanted to make that clarification
- 06:56
- If you're if you're joining me Like I said at the beginning if I can pray for you at the end love to be able to do that Um, all you have to do is type me
- 07:05
- I'll see that and i'd love to be able to pray for you Um, give us a heart only the only reason
- 07:11
- I say this is so that we can um We can
- 07:17
- Use the The method that these social media platforms have have put together to to expand our reach, um, not because i'm anyone special to listen to but so that We can spend time together in fellowship and and look at God's Word and we can share
- 07:35
- Jesus. Um, With with as many people in our community as possible. We want to reach our community
- 07:41
- We want to share Jesus. We want to expand his kingdom And um, let everyone know how
- 07:48
- Important Jesus is that he is he's the king of kings. He is reigning as king And he's gonna he's going to continue to reign until all of his enemies are put under his feet and that last enemy is going to be death and so Share comment.
- 08:04
- Let me know that you're watching. I really appreciate it. Um before we jump into scripture
- 08:10
- I wanted to look at one thing from what's going on in the world I was going to talk about it last week, but I was unable to And so i'm going to touch on it tonight
- 08:20
- I was watching. Um This is going to be something Similar to what we're going to touch on in the in the question and answer panel
- 08:30
- So I hope you'll join us for that. And so this is just just a little taste and um, of course the other guys
- 08:36
- They they may not all see things the way that I do But i'm just going to share some some things that that i've seen um,
- 08:44
- I was watching Or I caught a glimpse of uh a court hearing not too long ago
- 08:53
- And I listened to the judge as he Was giving instructions to the jury before they left the courtroom to do their deliberation
- 09:06
- And I was listening to his Um spiel that he gives them the instructions that he gives them
- 09:12
- Before they before they left now. I want to say this on the forefront. Um, i'm not in I'm, not in law enforcement.
- 09:20
- I'm not in law. I'm not Um, i've not been to law school Um, I i'm not familiar with this setting at all
- 09:29
- But what happened was I I listened to this one judge as he gave instruction
- 09:34
- And the words that he was saying Made my ears perk up and made me want to um
- 09:42
- What he was saying what sounded familiar to um some spiritual, uh religious type conversations that we're having and and Ideologies that are in the world today that um
- 09:58
- That are infiltrating our whole society. Uh, you want to talk about systemic? Um, i'm learning more about this all the time i'm learning about what these words mean systemic doesn't mean systematic systemic means um, it's it's infiltrating
- 10:14
- Every part of the whole that's what systemic means and and this ideology the though it accuses
- 10:23
- Another ideology of doing the same thing. This ideology is infiltrating
- 10:30
- Systemically our society and um And when
- 10:35
- I heard his his speech his instructions to the jury It made me think about this ideology this conversation this this ideology that is infiltrating our society
- 10:48
- Like crazy and it's an important conversation that we as christians need to have And like I said, we're going to discuss it further in our q a panel coming up.
- 10:57
- May 13th at 8 30 I hope you can join us for that. Um So the disclaimer is
- 11:04
- I'm, i'm not an expert in law. I'm not familiar with other Other times where judges give instruction.
- 11:13
- This may be a cookie cutter type instruction List that all judges give to juries.
- 11:20
- I'm, not sure I don't know. All I know is that when I heard this It made my ears perk up and want to listen because it sounds so familiar.
- 11:30
- So um Let me read to you the notes that I took down from His speech and then i'll explain what i'm talking about and why it made my ears perk up and um
- 11:41
- Why I think it's relevant for this conversation This is this is some of the things that that he said the judge said to the jury before they went out for deliberation
- 11:49
- He said I will give you the laws So he's going to give them the laws the information they need to to determine, uh the verdict uh, he said
- 11:58
- Your notes that you took He said notes are not binding um on conclusions
- 12:05
- But just an aid he said use your memory and recollection Don't use your notes. They're not binding use your memory and recollection
- 12:13
- We all and this is where it starts to get good. He said we all have feelings fears assumptions perceptions and stereotypes
- 12:24
- Some biases we are aware and some we are not Implicit unconscious biases
- 12:31
- We look at others and um And filter what they say through our own personal experiences and backgrounds we often tend to um to filter people or um favor, excuse me favor people who are like ourselves or had
- 12:53
- Life experiences like ours And then he gave an example of some of those biases that we have um, some people think that males should
- 13:03
- Be the ones with careers and females should be the ones. Um Supporting and raising the family
- 13:10
- You must reflect carefully about evidence think carefully about decisions.
- 13:15
- You're making Examine it for biases reconsider your first impressions of people if people in this case, um
- 13:26
- Are different. Um Are from different backgrounds um
- 13:32
- Rich poor More or less educated older younger gender gender identity race religion sexual orientation
- 13:41
- Would you view them and the evidence the same way? Listen to one another he said help each other to avoid bias
- 13:50
- And then there's one i'm going to leave to the end. He said resist jumping to conclusions based on personal likes and dislikes
- 13:58
- Generalizations gut feelings prejudices prejudices sympathy stereotypes and unconscious biases make decisions based solely on evidence now, that's that's the um
- 14:14
- That's the command here make decisions based solely on evidence But then take all this other stuff into consideration
- 14:21
- Must discuss together and carefully consider their views so Here's a couple things that struck me about this this instruction from a judge to the jurors before they go into liberation the
- 14:38
- They obviously spent a lot of time prior to the case prior to the hearing selecting the jury
- 14:49
- And part of that process the the goal is you are supposed to find people that you are confident will be objective
- 14:58
- Will be Unbiased will be able to look at the evidence and make a decision based solely on the evidence
- 15:04
- And not based on bias and not and be able to look at it objectively That's the whole goal on the forefront of selecting a jury
- 15:16
- So Why go through this whole spiel of instruction? telling them
- 15:23
- Not to be biased but look solely at the evidence Here's the last one.
- 15:28
- Here's the last um this kind of come earlier in his in his speech instructions But I left this one out because this is this is kind of the hinge of where we're going with this
- 15:39
- He said listen to different perspectives It may better help identify these hidden biases um
- 15:47
- May have on discerning or decision making listen to different perspectives
- 15:53
- It may better help identify hidden biases In your decision making
- 16:00
- So we've got to listen to other people So that we can identify our biases, but I thought
- 16:11
- I was you chose me because I was an An unbiased objective person but now
- 16:20
- I have to Before I look at the evidence. I have to listen to Someone else's opinion about what my biases are.
- 16:29
- I've got to listen to their views to uncover what my biases are It just doesn't make sense to me now.
- 16:36
- I completely understand Where where this um information is coming from we do want jurors to be unbiased.
- 16:44
- We want them to look at evidence Objectively But this was to have been done before Why are we telling objective unbiased people that they need to be
- 16:59
- Objective and unbiased because we've already made that decision about these people because um
- 17:05
- And like I said, I don't know if this is new This was unique to this judge or this is a cookie cutter type thing this is similar to what other judges say i'm sure some of it probably is but But How it relates to the conversation that's going on the ideology that is infiltrating the world right now is this um
- 17:27
- You need someone else To tell you who you are what your biases are you yourself cannot make an objective unbiased decision
- 17:38
- You you just can't do it. You must have someone else to tell you what your biases are
- 17:46
- And and that's what they are that their their truth now becomes your reality
- 17:53
- You you have to listen to them They they can't be wrong. You you have to listen to them and um
- 18:00
- And that's that's what made my ears perk up about this. Um People who are supposed to be objective and unbiased already.
- 18:08
- Um, he had to reiterate reiterate to them um to to listen now
- 18:14
- And this doesn't make sense it's kind of contradictory he's like you must You must make this this decision solely based on the evidence but before you look at the evidence you've got to discuss together
- 18:29
- Other people's views And let other people tell you what your views Should be and and what your biases are.
- 18:38
- Um Now i'm i'm probably taking Uh A little bit out of context
- 18:46
- But it and it it maybe was not his intention But this is the intention of this ideology that's out here in the world, um, and it's
- 18:57
- It's infiltrating our schools. It's in our schools right now this woke movement
- 19:04
- This critical theory that's being taught it is being taught as just as evolution is being taught as um
- 19:13
- Reality as as um true science, um instead of a theory
- 19:20
- Um, this is being taught as This this is the gospel truth this critical theory or critical race theory or this woke movement
- 19:28
- It is being taught it's in our schools and you you cannot be critical of it
- 19:34
- Um, i'm not going to go look at the article but the the article the other thing that I mentioned in the in the heading was
- 19:43
- A week or so ago, there was a teacher at a private school and and they got Suspended from from teaching because outside of school,
- 19:51
- I think it may have been on social media They criticized their school because their school was teaching
- 19:58
- This woke movement this critical critical theory this critical race theory And and this teacher objected to it now i'm not going to get into whether That teacher was right or wrong for criticizing publicly on social media their school
- 20:17
- Maybe they shouldn't have done that. My point was to bring out the fact that This is in our schools
- 20:26
- This is in our schools this is in our local schools if you're in my community
- 20:31
- This is in our local schools I have heard firsthand about it It is being taught as the gospel truth that um this ideology of This woke movement this critical race theory critical theory about about other things and What they are doing is
- 20:55
- Telling you what you must believe and you can't be critical critical about it They're telling you who you are
- 21:02
- What kind of person you are what your position in society is? And you can't argue with it
- 21:10
- Now in this ideology, there's no reconciliation. There's no winner. There's no good outcome.
- 21:16
- There's really no goal to it um That has a positive outcome it's it's all about power and and um
- 21:25
- And it stems its foundation is marxism where um It's a power struggle and you have oppressed versus oppressors
- 21:34
- And there's a group in society that are the oppressors and there's a group that are the oppressed
- 21:39
- And it's it's about power and the only um, the only objective is to switch that power
- 21:46
- You one group has to relinquish it so the other other group can be the ones that are in power and um
- 21:54
- And you are you are racist because they tell you you're racist and the and the other group
- 22:00
- They they can't in this ideology. They can't be racist. Only the oppressors
- 22:05
- Are the ones who are racist it is? It is totally against scripture And it's totally against the bible totally against god totally against christianity
- 22:14
- And it's it's totally against the way um god Has us to um to live our lives.
- 22:22
- It's totally against the um The kingdom of god and what jesus is doing and what jesus did um jesus brings reconciled true reconciliation
- 22:34
- Those that were far off those that were not my people are now my people And and they are one we are one body in christ and we could go on and on about that Uh, but those are things that are going on in the world.
- 22:45
- This is important conversation that we must have and be aware of because this ideology they are wanting to Make this ideology
- 22:58
- Systemic where it infiltrates every part of the whole and be the truth be the gospel that that rules our society in our world where We really need the gospel
- 23:13
- We need the gospel of jesus christ So we'll set that aside and we will talk more about those types of things in the question and answer panel
- 23:21
- And i'll have far greater experts than myself trying to answer those questions for us um
- 23:27
- So let's look at if you have your bibles and you want to join me for a few minutes We're going to continue in matthew matthew chapter 3.
- 23:34
- We're going to look at uh verses 13 through 17 and um What I want what
- 23:40
- I want to do there is is go back just a few verses to to lead up to verses 13 through 17 to give us the um the mindset the position the um
- 23:56
- To kind of show us where john the baptist was prior to Jesus coming to be baptized and the situation
- 24:05
- And and things that were going on with john at in his Baptism ministry there.
- 24:11
- So we're in john chapter 3. We're going to start in in verses Uh 7 through 7 through 10, that's where we're going to start
- 24:24
- Um God's word says but when he saw this was john when he saw many of the pharisees and sadducees coming for baptism
- 24:33
- He said to them you brood of vipers Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
- 24:40
- Therefore bring forth fruit in keeping with repentance And do not suppose that you can say to yourselves.
- 24:46
- We have abraham for our father For I say to you that god is able from these stones to raise up children to abraham now previously in in previous videos we talked about how
- 25:01
- People were were leaving leaving jerusalem coming out into the wilderness and we we see um
- 25:08
- The picture here john the baptist was in the wilderness We see all these um undertones of Israel and the wilderness and then coming out of egypt and uh, what was going on there?
- 25:25
- But they were leaving coming out of jerusalem To to find john the baptist and be baptized by john the baptist hear his message be baptized for repentance and uh and so also came the sadducees and and pharisees and Notice john's interaction with them um
- 25:47
- He he knows who they are. He knows their position. He knows what they're teaching and Just like their forefathers
- 25:55
- The pharisees and sadducees are continuing to lead the nation of israel. God's people away from god himself
- 26:03
- And he he asked them who warned you to flee the wrath of come to come He calls them a brood of vipers.
- 26:09
- Are you family of snakes? And this is his interaction with um these leaders these rulers of israel and then you have um verse 9 where he says
- 26:25
- Don't suppose or don't say that god is able. Um Excuse me. He says don't suppose that you can say to yourselves.
- 26:32
- We have abraham for our father So they were going to they were going to call on their heritage their lineage.
- 26:38
- Um to um to be or to uh
- 26:45
- Their lineage was going to um make their standing with god. Um, right
- 26:53
- Uh, they were going to use that as their um their their source of um
- 26:59
- Righteousness was their their lineage because we have this lineage. We have a right relationship with god and we're um
- 27:06
- We're going through hosea in in our church, um pastors are are preaching through hosea and when when we were looking at hosea chapter 4 verse 15, it's this made made me think of The attitude that they have here, uh where they want to they want to um pull from um this religion, uh and their heritage and use it um probably in a blaspheming way um
- 27:42
- To to say they have a right relationship with god. Um Um in hosea the nation is being condemned because of their um spiritual adultery
- 27:55
- Their idolatry they're worshiping other gods and and they are being confronted with that.
- 28:00
- Um and in verse 15, um He says though you israel.
- 28:07
- So a lot of this is going to israel Um, it goes to both kingdoms, but most of it is going to israel
- 28:13
- Um because they're they're the main players here in this in this scenario He says though you israel play the harlot.
- 28:20
- Do not let judah become guilty Also, do not go to gilgal or grow up to beth haven and Don't go up there and take the oath as the lord lives
- 28:32
- So they they use this oath to um As as a type of religious, um
- 28:43
- Confidence That as the as the lord lives just just as certain as he is alive
- 28:51
- He is um, he is going to bless this endeavor. He he blesses where we are We're still in good and right standing with god so we can we can swear by this oath as the lord lives.
- 29:04
- They they are Living however, they wanted to live But they were holding they they were using these um
- 29:13
- The these oaths they were in here in matthew they're using their lineage
- 29:19
- As a type of um Security blanket that they thought
- 29:25
- They thought it made them right and kept them right with god When the bible said that their hearts were were far from him
- 29:33
- And then you go to um verses 10 11 and 12
- 29:39
- Uh And the axe is already laid At the root of the trees every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire as for me
- 29:51
- I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me He is mightier than I and I am not fit to remove his sandals
- 30:01
- He will baptize you with the holy spirit and fire and his winnowing fork
- 30:07
- Is in his hand and he will thoroughly clear his threshing floor And he will gather his wheat into the barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire and what i'm wanting to do here in this introduction is to To put us in the shoes of john the baptist to to remember where he is what's going on in the situation and to remember uh
- 30:33
- By what we're reading The information that john is sharing is based on things that he knows
- 30:43
- Um, he knows this information about jesus. Um, he is he's saying to them that there there's one that is coming
- 30:49
- That is mightier than I this is a piece of information That he knows about the messiah about the one to come
- 30:58
- That he is mightier than I So he knows about the pharisees knows about the sadducees and he knows about this messiah
- 31:05
- And this messiah is greater than him and he knows something else about the messiah he knows that Um, he is going to baptize with the holy spirit and with fire and he's going to to um, gather up the chaff
- 31:19
- And and throw it into an unquenchable fire So he knows about the he knows about the grace and he knows about the wrath.
- 31:28
- He knows about the judgment that is to come uh through This messiah and we can look back at isaiah chapter 30, uh, 24 through 28 and and we can see
- 31:41
- Uh where this this winnowing fork and this dividing of the wheat and the chaff and the burning
- 31:46
- Um, but if we if we read the context here We can put ourselves in the mind of john the baptist
- 31:54
- When he's he's preaching this message And the knowledge that he has about this messiah to come
- 31:59
- About his grace and about his wrath. He's going to bring uh baptize with the holy spirit
- 32:05
- But he's also going to bring uh, he's going to baptize with fire. He's going to bring judgment He's going to throw the chaff into unquenchable fire.
- 32:13
- Isaiah 30 verses 24 through 28 says Also the oxen and the donkeys
- 32:20
- Which work the ground will eat salted fodder which has been winnowed
- 32:25
- With shovel and fork and on every lofty mountain and on every high hill there will be streams
- 32:31
- Running with water on that day of the great slaughter when the towers fall
- 32:38
- And the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter
- 32:43
- Like the light of the seven days on the day the lord binds up The fracture of his people and heals the bruise
- 32:51
- Of he has inflicted behold the name of the lord comes from a remote place
- 32:57
- The name of the lord comes from a remote place. Remember we talked about Jesus fulfilling a prophecy coming from nazareth.
- 33:04
- Um a no -name place Burning is his anger and dense is his smoke
- 33:11
- His lips are filled with indignation and his tongue is like a consuming fire
- 33:17
- Verse 28 and his breath is like an overflowing torrent which reaches to the neck
- 33:22
- To shake the nations back and forth in a sieve And to put in the jaws of the peoples the bridle which leads to ruin
- 33:34
- John the baptist knew about the messiah. He knew about his his grace
- 33:40
- His baptism of the holy spirit his forgiveness His position that he is mightier than him and that his his judgment as well his wrath to come
- 33:50
- So now we that leads us to to our verses verses 13 through 17 and let me read that for us
- 33:58
- Matthew chapter 3 verses 13 through 17. It says then jesus arrived from galilee at the jordan coming to john to be baptized by him
- 34:06
- But john tried to prevent him saying I have need to be baptized by you
- 34:12
- And do you come to me? But jesus answering said to him permitted at this time
- 34:18
- For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness Then he permitted him and after being baptized jesus went up immediately
- 34:27
- From the water and behold the heavens were opened and he saw the spirit of god descending as a dove And coming upon him and behold a voice out of the heavens saying this is my beloved son in whom
- 34:39
- I am well pleased so After john's message ends in this section in matthew
- 34:49
- Matthew then has jesus arriving from galilee at the jordan coming to john to be baptized
- 34:57
- Now remember we just talked about Where john was the knowledge that john had the messages that john preached how he communicated
- 35:08
- Um his interaction with the crowd with the pharisees and sadducees We we've got that context and we can remember all that information
- 35:17
- As jesus approaches as jesus comes to john because jesus is coming to be baptized by him now john when he
- 35:27
- When he interacted with the pharisees and sadducees remember what he called them you you family of snakes you brood of vipers
- 35:34
- Who warned you from the wrath to come? So he he knew their position he knew
- 35:41
- He knew what they um, they were doing to the nation of israel. He knew their religion.
- 35:47
- He knew everything that About the pharisees and sadducees, but he has a different interaction with jesus
- 36:00
- Why does he have a different interaction with jesus? Because of his knowledge which we just talked about in verse 11
- 36:08
- Because of his knowledge of the messiah to come of this jesus He says he who is coming after me is mightier than I and I am not fit to remove his sandal john realized his position before this messiah that it was a
- 36:26
- It put him in a position of humility. He humbled himself and when jesus come to be baptized when this messiah come to be baptized by him john
- 36:36
- Wanted to forbid it because he knew that jesus was mightier than him He didn't have the same.
- 36:43
- Um interaction with jesus as he did the pharisees and sadducees He knew jesus as the messiah the anointed king the true king of israel had come
- 36:58
- And he saw it as inappropriate To be baptized for for him to baptize the king when
- 37:09
- Jesus's position is above that of john the baptist john the baptist Knew that he needed to be baptized into him
- 37:19
- Not the other way around so john's whole Conversation his whole interaction with jesus was totally different than it was with with anyone else because he knew
- 37:31
- The word of god because he knew scripture. He had this knowledge of who the messiah was
- 37:37
- He was mightier than him. He was in a greater position. He's the king
- 37:43
- He's the anointed king the messiah that was to come and here he has come to be baptized
- 37:50
- But then in verse 15 jesus answered him he said permitted at this time For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness
- 38:01
- Now to understand that a little bit better, uh, we want to flip over to john. Um, this can mean different things we could do um
- 38:12
- A deep study on this and try to figure out all the things that it could mean
- 38:17
- But there's one thing that we know for sure that it means That when jesus says we we must fulfill all righteousness the word of god came to john the baptist
- 38:29
- And so the word of god must be fulfilled. And so when the word of god is fulfilled
- 38:37
- All righteousness is being fulfilled It is coming to pass. And so what was that interaction?
- 38:44
- What was that word of god that come to john the baptist if you look in john chapter 1 verses 27 through 34
- 38:50
- This was it Starting in verse 27. It is he who comes after me the thong of husendo.
- 38:56
- I'm not worthy to untie These things took place in bethany beyond the jordan where john was baptizing
- 39:03
- The next day he saw jesus coming to him and said behold the lamb of god who takes away the sin of the world
- 39:11
- John even knew his purpose Verse 30 this is he on behalf of whom
- 39:16
- I said after me comes a man who is higher rank Who is who has a higher rank than I for he existed before me
- 39:28
- And I did not recognize him but in order that he might be manifested to israel
- 39:35
- I came baptizing in water So god had sent him to be baptizing in water
- 39:43
- So that this messiah The one that existed before him eternally existed that ranks higher than john the baptist
- 39:53
- John the baptist is obedient to be going and be baptizing with water So that The messiah can be manifested or be shown to israel verse 32
- 40:05
- And john bore witness saying I have beheld the spirit descending as a dove out of heaven and he remained upon him
- 40:13
- And I did not recognize him, but he who sent me Which is god god sent him he who sent me to be to baptize in water said to me
- 40:23
- He upon whom you see the spirit descending and remaining upon him This is the one who baptizes in the holy spirit
- 40:31
- And I have seen it and I have seen and I have borne witness that this is the son of god
- 40:39
- So he bears witness that the word of god was fulfilled here in his presence what god said
- 40:47
- Came to pass it came true So therefore all righteousness was fulfilled
- 40:52
- When john baptized jesus The heavens were opened up a voice was heard the holy spirit came and descended upon him as a dove and remained and the voice said
- 41:05
- This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased so a couple questions that that come to my mind as I as i'm looking at this we
- 41:16
- We saw where john the baptist was We we learned from um what we read we we learned from his message the information that he knew
- 41:29
- He he knew he knew of god's word he knew the prophecy he knew about this messiah to come he knew of this messiah's position his rank
- 41:41
- He knew what his purpose was what he was going to do. He knew this information about the messiah to come
- 41:47
- He knew the word of god he knew what to be looking for that god would identify this messiah to him
- 41:53
- And he bore witness of it And we know his response to the crowd and to the pharisees and to the sadducees those who who were
- 42:02
- Who were proclaiming things that were untrue that were leading, uh, their people the people of israel away from god and and what they
- 42:12
- What they relied upon as their religion as their source of security Instead of this messiah to come
- 42:20
- He he knew all these things and so I was wondering what questions, um, should
- 42:26
- I be asking so First question is what is our response to who jesus is?
- 42:33
- First When we read from john when we read from the rest of the gospel about who jesus is
- 42:40
- Who he was what he did what his purpose was how he fulfilled all the prophecies.
- 42:46
- He's he fulfilled his purpose He's still fulfilling his purpose. He's going to fulfill the rest of the prophecies
- 42:54
- He's the king when we learn and we understand more of who jesus is
- 43:00
- What is our response to jesus? What is our going to what's going to be our response to jesus is it one of recognizing his position
- 43:09
- That he is king and that we submit to him We come to him in submission
- 43:16
- With repentance and faith trusting in him alone Not just for salvation
- 43:22
- But for his kingdom work and what he's doing And the other question was what is our um, what is our call to sinners?
- 43:32
- john the baptist here was um very straightforward, uh with his truth
- 43:39
- Knowing who they were what their teachings were. He called them a brood of vipers. He went after these these false teachers
- 43:46
- And um, he called them out We we may not always be in a position we can be ready to do that But we may not always be in a position to do that and it may not be the appropriate time to do that But it's always the appropriate time to speak truth and we can speak truth and love and we don't need to shy away from Helping people to see and understand that just like we are
- 44:14
- They are sinners as well And without christ without submitting to the king coming to him in repentance and faith
- 44:24
- They will be part of those who are in this chap who have been separated
- 44:29
- And will be burned up in unquenchable fire. That's the truth of god's word. That's the truth of john's message
- 44:36
- That's the truth of jesus and who he is So we want to come to jesus with humility
- 44:42
- And we want to serve him and we want to come to interact with others with the truth
- 44:51
- Because in an eternity in unquenchable fire It's not where we want our fellow image bearers
- 45:02
- To spend their eternity We want them to be submissive to the king as well
- 45:09
- And live for him And be in his kingdom the last thing that I want to touch on before we leave is um
- 45:17
- Is in verse 17 And this is something that i'm growing in right now This is something that i'm learning more and more about and i'm hoping that it's going to continue to grow
- 45:27
- And and help me to understand who who god is who jesus is And and the story and the picture of the whole bible
- 45:36
- And what god has been doing from the beginning and what he's done and what he's going to continue to do
- 45:41
- Because there's a big picture here and that's a consistent picture There's a consistent picture that is painted in scripture and it is beautiful And I hope to share with you more and more about it if if the lord allows and I know dan and I this coming saturday
- 45:59
- When we talk about there's going to be a time change we're going to be Together at 12 30 if the lord allows 12 30 this saturday, um
- 46:08
- Around lunchtime not in not at night at at in midday
- 46:14
- And we're going to be talking about the eschatology of hope God redeeming the culture and what that looks like Um being a part of this new heavens and new earth and um
- 46:29
- This this that I want to touch on right here is just a Small minute fraction of that bigger picture.
- 46:37
- It relates to that subject that we're going to talk about saturday But it is it is part of that thread of this greater tapestry and And this is part of studying god's word
- 46:50
- Look at the words that are used and and Be thinking about where these other words are used in the bible where these other
- 47:00
- Phrases and concepts are used and how it fits in with the greater picture
- 47:06
- Um How is it used elsewhere in scripture so that we know how to interpret it here all those questions that we can ask um looking and studying god's word
- 47:17
- But look at verse 17 He says and behold a voice out of heaven out of the heavens saying this is my beloved son
- 47:27
- In whom I am well pleased now If you've been a bible Student if you've been a christian for a while if you've been in church if you've been in sunday school, you're familiar um with the bible and this language, um of Jesus being called god's son
- 47:47
- You're familiar with that language. It's it's not always completely Understandable what that is what all that exactly that means
- 47:58
- But we are familiar with that terminology with that language that jesus is the son of god
- 48:04
- But you know that language is used elsewhere in scripture if you look in luke chapter 3 verse 38
- 48:14
- Adam the first man Luke tells us in his genealogy And he goes all the way back to adam and he says he calls adam the son of god
- 48:28
- Adam Adam is the first one to be called the the son of god and and why is that? Because god created him.
- 48:35
- He created him in his image. He was the he was the preeminent man He was the only man but he was the preeminent man.
- 48:41
- Adam was to have been the the priest of of the temple The garden of eden was was the temple at that time where eden was the temple the garden was the earth and and he had a mandate to To protect to guard subdue to keep it
- 49:00
- And to expand it his his mandate was not just for The garden sometimes we have that imagery in our mind that the garden and eden and the garden was
- 49:14
- Just this um Certain it had this certain acreage and that's where they lived and that's what he was
- 49:23
- In charge of tending and and taking care of Subduing and keeping and that's where all the animals were but the mandate was
- 49:33
- To expand it to all the earth so adam's creation mandate adam's mandate was to um take god's garden
- 49:44
- And expand it into the whole earth to subdue the whole earth to make the whole earth god's garden
- 49:52
- That was the mandate and of course, we know what happened adam's fall
- 49:58
- Sent a curse to all mankind and to all the earth And then we have someone else
- 50:05
- Whom god calls his son in hosea 11 God says that um, he he he raised him
- 50:14
- He he was there when he was a child and he called him his son And and who was that if you go to exodus chapter 4 verse 22 and you learn that who he's talking about is israel
- 50:25
- God called israel. He told moses to to go to pharaoh and say that israel is my son
- 50:34
- And so israel was his son and and israel the people Now had this mandate
- 50:41
- That they were the the temple The temple was even and and the if you look at the temple and and how it um,
- 50:51
- Um portrayed the garden You had the inner court you had the outer court and you had and and then it keeps going their mandate
- 51:03
- And and hopefully we're going to touch on this more as I take more notes about it
- 51:09
- Israel's mandate from god was exactly the same as adam's That he was they were to go and multiply and fill the earth and and subdue it and all the nations would be blessed because of him this was a a global mandate
- 51:28
- They weren't supposed to stay here They were to be you know given this land as as the new garden as the new temple, but then they were to expand it
- 51:38
- But as we've seen in isaiah as we've seen in hosea and all the other prophets Israel failed
- 51:48
- And now we have In matthew chapter 3 verse 17. God said this is my beloved son in with whom
- 51:56
- I am well pleased and this son the greater adam
- 52:02
- The son of god the son of man the king of kings and lord of lords jesus christ
- 52:07
- Did not fail And he will never fail He succeeded in pleasing god.
- 52:16
- He said in whom I am well pleased God was always pleased with his son jesus christ
- 52:26
- From all of his life his death burial and resurrection Jesus succeeded jesus didn't fail
- 52:36
- And now the mandate is to go into all the world And preach the gospel
- 52:43
- Making disciples teaching them all that i've commanded you lo. I am with you always even to the end of the age
- 52:49
- And then you have an axe. Um Go to jerusalem judea and the uttermost parts uttermost parts of the earth
- 52:57
- The mandate is the same from adam to israel to jesus We are the temple of god and we are his dwelling place and we are to Multiply and fill the earth with his disciples
- 53:11
- Teaching the nations to observe all that he has commanded him. We are to Subdue the earth keep it and guard it
- 53:21
- And let the nations know that jesus is king. He is the king of kings and so My question to you is
- 53:31
- How are you going to respond to jesus? I would encourage you to submit to him come to him in humility submit to him as king
- 53:42
- Come to him in repentance and faith trust in him For your life and for your soul
- 53:48
- Come to him for salvation come to him for life And be a part of his kingdom and his movement and what he's doing and this mandate to to fill the earth to subdue the earth
- 54:03
- And share his name To everyone that we can Come to him if you've not come to him and if you've come to him if you if you've submitted to king jesus
- 54:16
- Then share that with others If I can pray for you let me know i'd love to be able to do that All you have to do is type me i'm going to go ahead and pray for us.
- 54:25

- 54:51
- Thank you for this time that you've given us to spend together to look at your word Thank you for jesus the son of god
- 54:58
- Who never failed? That completely and utterly pleased you and thank you for Allowing us to be found in him through repenting of our sins and trusting in him
- 55:16
- That you see him when you see us and and not anything that And not see us for who we are or any efforts that we tried to do.
- 55:29
- We're so thankful that jesus came to make things right and to And to be fulfilling this mandate so that your glory will be all over the globe
- 55:43
- And that this will be your Your kingdom your garden Again The way it was intended to be and we look forward to the day when it's all completed
- 55:58
- And there's no more tears. There's no more sorrow. There's no more fear. There's no more anxiety
- 56:06
- And so we bless your holy name And we worship you and praise you And we pray all these things in jesus name.
- 56:13
- Amen Thank you for watching. I really appreciate it Um, I hope you have a good evening
- 56:18
- Remember that jesus is king go live in that victory and let's continue to go out there and proclaim the gospel
