Bro. Otis Fisher
How many of you remember when you were a child. Of going for a Sunday afternoon drive times were slower then. More peaceful. How many of you remember Pulling a wishbone with your friend. Well, the first one got you.
Romans chapter 6. I guess I have taught the book of Romans. Just to teach this chapter, but then I could say that about all of them. But in this chapter in this chapter every place you see the word sin.
I Want you to read it sin nature. Or the sin nature. Yes. Yes, I did and I'll tell you again. All right, verse 1. What shall we say then. Shall we continue in the sin nature that grace may abound? Throughout this chapter The Apostle proves that they who imagined that free righteousness is given us by him apart from newness of life shamefully rend Christ asunder.
God forbid. How shall we That are dead to sin nature live any longer therein. We have the word dead. Dead now, is it a perfect or imperfect verb? Joy, all right. What does perfect verb mean? It's what?
Alright done one time forever. What is the verb? Live. Dennis perfect or imperfect. Imperfect is right now an imperfect verb. What does that mean? Dennis not exactly. Greg tell us what does the imperfect verb mean?
All right, something that goes on and on and on and on and on forever. So we were dead perfect and we live imperfect dead one time forever. To the old sin nature. We keep trying to resurrect it. But we can't the real you the born-again you.
That part of you is dead to the sin nature. It is dead to the sin nature. Meaning that the connection is broken. And you live forever. He says God forbid or perish the thought. When we're born again, our spirits are put in control of our bodies and minds.
Now, I know a lot of us don't act like it sometimes the spiritual dimension. We've. We fellowship with God and our conscience of God Through Jesus Christ. And in the third verse he says no you not or you you know this.
I Want you to be aware that you know this. That so many of us or all of us That were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death now. David is there water in this baptism? No. No water here at all.
Turn to first Corinthians 12 13 and 1st Peter 3 21. David I want you to go to 1st Corinthians 12 13. Greg go to 1st Peter 321 and Read those two verses to us. Now. How many spirits are there? One one spirit and all we.
Meaning who David, right? Every born-again believer has been made and he didn't do it. He was made to drink Into the spirit the one spirit now first Peter 321. All right. If We had not been placed into his death. We could not be in the resurrection of his body.
Now this baptism saves us from inward questionings. We had a man this week. Want to know about baptism and he wanted to be baptized and rightly so. But it will save you and me not our life. Not from everlasting damnation, but it will give you a good conscience toward God.
Provides us with a good clear conscience before the peace of God. Now, why is this Dennis? Why does that clear up your conscience towards the Heavenly Father? All right. Let me find out now David. What is it you are demonstrating when you were baptized.
Alright, what is it that you are proving? You're proving. That you believe he did it all yes. Right. All right. You're making a statement to the world. Sure. You make a statement that you believe it and you belong to him and he is real.
He has resurrected. Now in Exodus 21 6 we're going to go into the doulos connection. Just a little bit David. Turn to Exodus 21 6 for me, please and read that. Isn't it wonderful how we have all of the spiritual truths?
Acted out in the Old Testament. They were acted out first before we realized that we have the spiritual truth. But tell me in your own words David what happened here? Well What does the term bond servant mean?
All right. Now that's important that you take note of that. A slave can become a bond slave. This is one that is never free unless his master dies or he dies one of the other in the physical in the book of Romans chapter 1 verse 1 Paul says Paul a servant of Jesus Christ called an apostle separated unto the gospel of God and He means that he was a bond slave of Satan before this.
You're a bond slave of somebody of Satan or the Lord and he is now a bond slave or servant of Jesus. The Greek word is d-o-u-l-o-s Doulos. Remember that so it follows that any bond servant to be loosed from Satan.
There has to be a death in The physical the relationship could be broken if one of them died. So the same thing now in the spiritual. Paul was a bond slave of Satan. We all were at one time. Never the seed of Satan.
You were a servant of Satan and it's here in verse 3 that Paul tells us about the death That set us free. Every Christian has to start and does start His walk with Christ his conscious walk with Christ in the death of Christ on the cross.
I Say Christ, I mean Jesus Christ. In the death of Jesus on the cross We were placed Spiritually and there is the death. That breaks the bond servant relationship to Satan. You see how important it is that he told us all of this.
Now if you have questions, please stop me and ask because I can't see much. And I may miss a hand. So we will understand what baptism means. You've heard it from me any number of times. And rather than ask you to explain it. Let me give it to you again.
If you don't have it write it down. This is the long legal definition of baptism the placing of a person or a thing from one environment into another environment and Doing it in such a way that it changes the state of the person or thing in relation to his previous environment it means being placed in to now.
Joy. Explain the word baptized in your own terms. Don't don't repeat my definition. All right, Dennis. All right Dennis you all right Greg all right different. In what way? All right, Russell. All right Brandon what does baptize me?
All right. Very good Fred but All right, you all missed the changing of the state of the person. An example is the horseshoe. The blacksmith gets it hot in the fire and with tongs he drops it into water.
That didn't change the shape or the Looks of the horseshoe, but it did change the state of the horseshoe. Internally now. But that's right now. You. When you were baptized into Christ, what what does the into part mean?
David means something else more. All right Into carries with it the meaning that you are not in you were placed in to We came in to The church this morning from outside placed in to Jesus Christ on the cross at what point at his death.
You were placed in to him at his death. Joy why is the why is it important that we understand we were placed in to him at his death? Why did we have to die Dennis? David we had to die to break that connection that you were under to Satan a Servant of Satan a bondservant and nobody could could ever get out of that unless so one of them died.
Well, Satan's not going to die. So you had to die. Do you understand? I? Want you all to know this frontwards and backwards and sideways. Now Let's go on a little bit. Therefore verse 4 therefore Meaning because of We are buried With him by baptism into death.
That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also Should walk in newness of life. We're buried with him Dennis why? Being Buried with him. Buried. Well, that's true.
We will Joy. What do you what what kind of things do you bury? Dead things if we died we're buried because we're dead and That was by baptism. You're put under the water. You're dead. You don't see him anymore.
The same as putting in a grave. You don't see them anymore. Now is that buried? Past or present past. Is it passive or active David? Passive done by somebody else. The passive voice. Let me give you an example.
The boy was hit by the ball. The boy receives the action. It was passive. He got hit. Now the last part of that verse. That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also Should walk in newness of life.
Well, let me take the other verse with it for we. For if we have been planted in the likeness of his death We shall also in the likeness of his resurrection be in the likeness of his resurrection now.
Brian or what's your boy's name? Yes Brandon I was close. Brandon what things do you plant? Yes, exactly. So So it was no accident that they changed the verb. That like as Christ was raised up from the dead now, we have to be there.
We have to be dead. We were buried By the glory of the father. He didn't do it. The father did the glory of the father. Even so We should walk in newness of life. We are you bury the old flesh. Dominated nature in baptism and the new creature is free from sin.
You come out of that grave with no hint of sin. Did you ever wonder why? At the moment of your salvation you feel so good. Had you ever thought about it? Why is that? David sense of relief of freedom.
What it really is you haven't had time to sin yet and you feel so good and You have all of this feelings and now is that necessary? It sure is nice. Sure. Sure. That's right. But I believe it'll never be like it is that first time the very first second.
Now it may not last long. Because you begin to sin, but it's great. For we have been planted. And you Brandon says you plant what you want to grow. The word planted together is assume photos planted together born together of joint origin.
Grown together united with like Siamese twins we grow up together. Had you ever thought why? You were able to be saved at the age you were. Some it's in later life some 20 some teenagers some at 5 some at 8.
Why is that that you can see Christ Jesus at that age. David. Well when. Why were you saved at the age you were? Well, how is it that the same Jesus can come to you at 20 years of age and to KK at 5. Fred all right.
No, no. Yes, all right, I'm looking for a word don't see it. Therefore We're buried with him in baptism. That like as Christ is raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in newness of life the word also and together.
For we have been planted In the likeness of death we shall also in the likeness of his resurrection the word also. Is what makes it possible For KK to see Jesus or for Fred to see Jesus To also the little word also.
We don't have words in English. But it it means that He is a Siamese twin of you when he comes to you, he is at your age and You have grown up with him now some. This has got to be an individual thing it can't be a universal growing up because everybody is a different age.
Joy you saw him as Someone that you could look to when at whatever age you were. My own was 13. I didn't think about it then but but I Could understand who he was. Do you see what I'm trying to say the word also?
It it it brings you to where Christ is and He comes. Jesus comes to where you are a child a Teenager a young man an old man or an ancient man like Fred and I therefore We were buried with him by baptism into death.
That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also Should walk in newness of life. We also will walk should walk. Can walk in newness of life? For if we have been planted and this is the Siamese twin thing In the likeness of his death we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.
It'll be just like Christ. Only Christ is as you were at that age. Knowing this that our old man is crucified with him that the body of the sin nature might be destroyed. Destroyed what does destroy mean Dennis?
All right, you severed from separated from discharged from loose from anyone. That henceforth. We should not serve the sin nature henceforth. No longer. Because the sin nature does not have dominion over your soul.
He did until what took place. Joy. All right. Guitar go. Which means this is the word destroy means to be put out of business. Now this should read in the past tense. Yes, yes. Yes, that's right. Absolutely in the likeness of his resurrection you were just like Jesus Christ.
Now we understand this has to be spiritually only not physical. But spiritually we are as Jesus Christ was when he come out of the grave. Forever and it's because of verse 7 for he that is. Is dead is freed from sin.
If you're dead you're free from sin. Were you free from sin before you entered into his death David? No. But during the process of his death burial and resurrection. You have come out of the grave free of that.
Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. And Greg. We believe that we shall also live with him. How much assurance do you have that you shall live with Jesus Christ as much as possible in this life.
Are we to live in such a way that our Lord can use us? Dennis Russell are we to live in such a way that the Lord can use us? Yes. Well, you're you're changing my question David are we to live in such a way that the Lord can use us?
That's right. We cannot live in such a way a good way that Christ can use us now to Verify what you were thinking. That's what we should do and he will use us whether we're living that way or not. That's the amazing thing.
Yes, that's what we should be. Sure. That that's all true. Absolutely, but the point I'm making is are we to live in such a way. We can't live in such a way. We ourself. I can't today say I'm going to be a Christian and go out and live like Christian.
I can look back yesterday and say did I live like a Christian not in ourselves? Verse 9 knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more. Death have no more dominion over him. What does dominion mean joy?
All right. Russell what were the two deaths that Jesus died on the cross? That's right. Now Christ didn't die. Jesus died. Christ is the office That he held in heaven. But Jesus the body the man is what died.
He died twice. It's easy to see the physical death if we turn to John 19 30. David go over to that, please. It is finished. What is it? That was finished David. That's right. Our salvation was secure now.
It took me a long time before I saw this. He bowed his head and gave up the ghost. That means he died. But look at how he died Dennis. He bowed his head then he died. He had control over his life now if he had if he had Died with his head up.
That would have been the death of of a human being. But not this he bowed his head then he died. So it's important that we look at the little phrases the small words. Now, let's go to Genesis 2 17 and Matthew 27 46.
Greg will you go to Matthew 27 46, please? Well our times up we got to stop hold that and we'll get to that next week. Stop with nine. We'll take nine again next week. All right. Is there any questions?
Well good. Means you understand everything. Russell dismisses, please.
