Isaiah 9 .6 says, For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder.
And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Now we know this to be a prophecy about Jesus made 700 years before he was born. So, oneness,
Unitarians, Modalists, and others who reject the doctrine of the Trinity like to use this verse to argue that Jesus, the
Son of God, is also God the Father. It says right there, He is the Son who shall be called a
Father. But this verse is not saying Jesus is both the Father and the Son. All of these titles in Isaiah 9 .6
are descriptors of a sovereign monarch. Wonderful Counselor means his wisdom will surpass them all.
Every other king will be beholden to his supreme counsel. Mighty God means he is the great conqueror.
Pagans thought of their kings as gods, but Jesus is the true and only God, and he will be victorious against his foes.
Everlasting Father means he is the king who abides forever. A king is the federal head over his kingdom, hence being called a father.
Jesus will be the head over his kingdom forever, as said in verse 7. So again, this is not calling him
God the Father. It means he is the eternal king. Prince of Peace means that he is the rightful heir of his throne, the throne of David.
And in ascending to the throne, he will be the author of peace between God and man. Nowhere does
Jesus call himself the Father. He says he is one with the Father, John 10 .30, but that is not the same as saying he is the
Father. We worship one God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, all of whom were distinctly observed by many at Jesus' baptism.
As 1 John 4 .14 says, we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his
