Live from the historic parsonage of the 19th century gospel minister George Norcross in downtown
00:10
Carwile, Pennsylvania, it's Iron Sharpens Iron. This is a radio platform in which pastors,
00:23
Christian scholars, and theologians address the burning issues facing the church and the world today.
00:31
Proverbs chapter 27 verse 17 tells us, Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
00:38
Matthew Henry said that in this passage, we are cautioned to take heed with whom we converse and directed to have in view in conversation, to make one another wiser and better.
00:50
It is our hope that this goal will be accomplished over the next two hours, and we hope to hear from you, the listener, with your own questions, and now here's your host,
01:00
Chris Arnzen. Good afternoon,
01:10
Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Lake City, Florida, and the rest of humanity living on the planet
01:15
Earth who are listening via live streaming at IronSharpensIronRadio .com. This is
01:21
Chris Arnzen, your host of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, wishing you all a happy Thursday on this 21st day of November 2019, and I am absolutely thrilled, and that's an understatement, because for the next two days, today and tomorrow, we have on the program
01:38
Jeff Thomas. Reverend Jeff Thomas is one of my favorite guests to interview, and he's also one of my favorite preachers and authors.
01:48
He, beginning in 1965, served for over 50 years as pastor of Alfred Place Baptist Church of Aberystwyth, Wales, and today, we are going to be discussing one of his latest books,
02:04
Brownlow North, The All -Around Evangelist, and then tomorrow, we're going to be discussing
02:10
How Can I Please God in Everything, another book that has been recently brought into print, both books published by Reformation Heritage Books, the wonderful publishing ministry founded by Dr.
02:22
Joel Beakey of Puritan Reform Theological Seminary. We're also going to be announcing Sermon Audio's The Foundations Conference, where our guest,
02:31
Reverend Jeff Thomas, will be on the speaking roster, but it's my honor and privilege to welcome you back to Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, Reverend Jeff Thomas.
02:40
Hi, good to speak to you again, Chris. Oh, it is such a joy for me, and we very rarely have a guest on for two days in a row, and I'm so excited that we have you, of all people, on for two days in a row.
02:55
And you have something in your resume that very few pastors can say, that you were at a church, one single congregation, for over 50 years.
03:06
Before we go on to our subject at hand, why don't you tell our listeners about Alfred Place Baptist Church of Aberystwyth, Wales, and am
03:13
I pronouncing it correctly, because I think from the way that you instructed me years ago, Aberystwyth, I remember the way that you phonetically spelled it out or sounded it out,
03:24
I should say, and I think I've been pronouncing it correctly, haven't I? You're doing a great job.
03:34
Aberystwyth, I say, Aberystwyth, and then you got it. It's a lovely town. It's a resort.
03:39
It's a town of 20 ,000 people, 10 ,000 of whom are students. The first university in Wales was set up there, 1870 -ish, because it was halfway between the
03:55
North and the South, and the divisions that every country has between the North and the South, we have in Wales as well.
04:01
So the National Library and the first university was set up in this little seaside town, and it's bilingual.
04:09
We have a sister congregation in the Welsh language, and then my congregation was in the
04:15
English language. And I understand, if I am correct in my memory, that now that you have retired, your grandson is now pastoring there?
04:26
He is, and in the house where we raised the three daughters, he's moved into that house when
04:32
I left three years ago, and he is now raising three little boys there.
04:38
He's a wonderful fellow, and the congregation is growing, and it's drawing numbers of students along to it.
04:49
And his younger brother, he is also now in his last year at Aberystwyth University, and he is studying film, but he wants to work with InterVarsity next year, and he wants to be a child of the book as well.
05:06
Amen. Well, praise God for that. By the way, if anybody wants to investigate more about Alfred Place Baptist Church, if you happen to either live in Aberystwyth, Wales, or you're vacationing there, or you have family, friends, and loved ones near there, the website is alfredplacechurch .org
05:26
.uk. That's alfredplacechurch .org .uk, and hopefully
05:32
I'll remember to repeat that later on. Well, you know, instead of stealing the thunder from a person who has already submitted a question for you,
05:43
I'm going to read a question right away from a listener, because it really helps us set up the interview, a person who
05:51
I have actually interviewed on this program who is an author himself, Dewey Roberts, who is the pastor of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Destin, Florida.
06:02
In Destin. I know him very well, my dear friend. Oh, wow. I didn't know that. Okay. Well, he asks, when you asked
06:09
Jeffrey how he became interested in writing a biography of Brownlow North, and what is
06:15
North's chief relevance to 21st century preachers? Well, that's very good, isn't it?
06:24
Fundamental questions like that. Well, I'd never heard of him until there was a reprint by the
06:32
Banner of Truth 60 years ago. The reprint was brought out in a very attractive paperback with a new typeface.
06:45
You know now how we have to do that, to make things helpful to the reader, and so I read it with delight.
06:55
And then there were two books. I once said to Ernest Riesinger, what was the first Banner of Truth book that you ever read?
07:02
And he said, oh, I read The Rich Man and Lazarus by Brownlow North, and that struck me.
07:10
I was very impressed and convicted by that book. And so the Banner brought out those sermons, which
07:18
Brownlow North preached in the great 1859 revival that went on the world, Wales, Scotland, but Ireland especially was affected.
07:26
And Brownlow North preached the thousands in the open air, the story of the rich man who went to hell and the poor beggar who was straight within Christ and he went to heaven.
07:41
And so I read those sermons and thought, well, that is what evangelistic preaching is like.
07:47
And so being introduced to this figure and finding his life so fascinating and admiring so much his character and personality and achievements, those are the ways,
08:07
Gary Roberts, those are the ways, if you are listening, and I'm sure you are, that I was introduced to this wonderful Presbyterian evangelist.
08:17
Well, thank you so much, Dewey. And since Jeff Thomas thinks so highly of you,
08:23
I'll also give your church a free plug here. If you live in Destin, Florida or plan to visit there or have family, friends, and loved ones there, their website is
08:32
CornerstonePCADestin .org, Cornerstone P -C -A for Presbyterian Church in America, Destin, D -E -S -T -I -N .org.
08:42
Thanks a lot, Dewey, and we look forward to not only having you return as a guest, but also we look forward to hearing from you with questions for other guests on Iron Trip and Zion Radio.
08:51
So this is actually the first time I am hearing about Brown Low North myself.
08:58
The subtitle is quite interesting. Can you explain exactly what you mean by the all -around evangelist?
09:06
Well, it's the means that he used for sharing the message of the good news of Jesus Christ with men and women.
09:22
He did so geographically by traveling around the
09:28
British Isles, visiting London and Wales and the Midlands and north of England and all parts of Scotland.
09:36
He did it by writing more and more. J .C .Ryle
09:42
called his essays tracts, and so, too, the same printer published
09:53
Brown Low North's sermons, calling them tracts. And he used literature, and he also then spoke in the open air and in buildings, went to universities to speak to the students.
10:14
And he was tireless in that work, but he was a human being of great attractiveness.
10:23
He would write his letters and correspond and help people during the morning, and then in the afternoon, then he would meet with his family, and he loved to play chess.
10:35
He would go fishing with the three surviving sons of his, and then he would read devotions in the evenings, and then he would be preaching.
10:51
So, all around, as a personality, as a vigorous promoter of the good news of Jesus Christ, he served the cause of the gospel very well.
11:10
Now, can you tell us, first of all, and if you said it, please forgive me if I missed it, but what era did
11:17
Brown Low North live in? And if you also could tell us, from the beginning, what kind of a religious atmosphere, if any, he was raised in, and any kind of providential circumstances you may be aware of, that the
11:30
Lord used to draw him to himself and save Brown Low North. Yes, I'd love to do that.
11:37
He was born in 1810, just a couple of years before some of the more famous Scotsmen like Robert Marion Bechene was born two years later,
11:47
Horatius Bonner, he was born the same year.
11:53
He was born in London. His father was a pastor, and Charles Augustus North, and his wife,
12:06
Brown Low North's mother, Rachel, they were born, he was born in Chelsea.
12:12
His grandfather, Brown Low North, was a bishop in the Church of England, and his grandfather's brother was the
12:19
Prime Minister under George III. He was Lord North. So this is an extraordinary, distinguished family, and he went to school in Eton, where now, of course,
12:33
William, who was following his father one day to become the
12:38
King of England, and his brother Harry, those two boys, they went to Eton as well, but he was not academically interested at all.
12:53
He was rebellious, and at 19, his father died, and he was sent to study at Corfu in a theological college, but he was wild -spirited and soon returned home.
13:08
He learned nothing and ignored the tutor that was sent to train him.
13:14
He enjoyed dancing, he enjoyed horse riding, he enjoyed the company of women, and one winter he proposed to no fewer than 19 girls, all of whom accepted his offer of marriage.
13:45
What happened was he went to Galway on the west coast of Ireland, and he lived quite a while there, and he met a preacher's daughter,
13:53
Grace Coffey, and at 18 years of age, he married her, and by the time he was 21, he had two sons to care for.
14:01
He had four sons, one of whom died in infancy, and he was very happily married.
14:07
She was a beautiful and godly girl, and they were inseparable, so there was never adultery in his life.
14:19
He had an income from a post that his grandfather, the Bishop of Winchester, created for him.
14:26
He was a registrar in the diocese, and he took that position quite seriously, but he wasn't serious in other things.
14:36
He had a salary, he couldn't keep up with his interest in horses and riding, and he became a gambler.
14:47
He lost much money. He had to escape to Beroin to get away from those demanding money and debts that he owed them, and it was fruitless as an escapade, and he enlisted in the
15:00
Portuguese army for a while, and that was another debacle, and at 25 he returned home.
15:07
His life was going nowhere. His family covered his debts, so he said,
15:13
I'll go to Scotland. I'll go to my brother's -in -law, and I'll shoot grouse, and he fell in love with Scotland, and there he remained for the rest of his life, virtually becoming a naturalized
15:26
Scot. What he did then, the next four years, he spent the summers shooting, and the winters in the large house in Aberdeen, he raced horses and won many of the races, and then in the summers, he walked across the moors of Scotland with his gun, and his motto was, every day and all day, and one season at Glenbucket, he shot 770 brace of grouse in six weeks.
15:59
250 grouse a week he shot. And then the emptiness of his life, it convicted him, and his conscience would trouble him, and the teaching of his mother, and her prayers, and her example, that couldn't be eradicated from his mind.
16:19
And he had Christian friends who prayed for his conversion. One day he spoke to a
16:25
Christian lady, the Duchess of Gordon, he said to her, what should a man do who's often prayed to God and never been answered?
16:33
And she looked straight back at him, and she said, he ask and receive not, because he ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
16:45
And those few words from the epistle of James had a mighty impact on him.
16:53
But then he would shake off that impact, and he would love to read, and then the call of shooting and fishing came over him.
17:05
But he went to Oxford, to Magdalene Hall in Oxford, and he studied there for several years, and thought weekly about becoming a vicar.
17:17
He was interviewed by the bishop, but he was casual and uncertain about his sense of call.
17:24
And the bishop finally said to him, if I were in your position, and you were in my position, would you ordain me?
17:34
I wouldn't, my lord. I wouldn't, he said. And so then back for another 10 years, fishing and hunting,
17:46
I never apprehended Christ, he said. I never accepted him as my sin bearer and my righteousness.
17:55
I was like a man who swept and garnished his house and drove out the demon who had lived but hadn't filled the house with the presence of the
18:04
Son of God. So that was his life, and he drifted back.
18:11
At 35 years of age, he was still walking the moors of Scotland around Inverness.
18:18
You know, for three years, he shot grouse in the summer, unloaded racehorses in the winter.
18:24
His children got married when he was 40, settled in a large house near Inverness, and there he continued without God.
18:35
He hated blasphemy. He couldn't stay in a room if a man was taking the name of Christ in vain.
18:43
He says, for 44 years of my life, my object was to pass time pleasantly.
18:49
As long as the day was spent agreeably, I was satisfied. I don't believe I ever did any real good to a human being.
18:58
I rented moors and fisheries. I shot. And then I would give an odd five shillings when a woman lost her cow, and I would give them a party at Christmas time.
19:09
That's all I did. And I thought I was living a good life, but his friends never stopped praying for him.
19:18
His aunt earnestly interceded for his salvation, and one day she heard a sermon on the text, let me die the death of the righteous.
19:29
And he came to her mind. So she scribbled down notes on the sermon, and she sent it to him, and he wrote back to her.
19:36
And he said, Dear Auntie, if you're going to die the death of the righteous, you must live the life of the righteous.
19:43
And I'm not prepared for that yet. And he continued like that till 1854, when he was 45 years of age, and then illness came upon him.
19:58
And he went to see his cousin Blackwell, who was a beautiful man, a minister, a preacher who spoke to him earnestly and convicted him of his sin and of his need of Christ.
20:16
And so in November 1854, he says this, Please God, in the month of November, one night when
20:25
I was sitting playing at cards to make me concerned about my soul, the instrument used was the sensation of sudden illness, which led me to think that I was going to die.
20:36
I said to my son, I'm a dead man. Take me upstairs. As soon as this was done, I threw myself down on the bed.
20:42
My first thought was now, what were my 44 years of following the devices of my own heart profiting?
20:50
In a few minutes, I shall be in hell. What good will all these things do me for which
20:56
I have sold my soul? And at that moment, I felt constrained to pray.
21:02
But it was nearly the prayer of a coward, a cry for mercy. I wasn't sorry for what
21:07
I'd done, but I was afraid of the punishment of my sin. And there was something trying to prevent me putting myself on my knees to call for mercy.
21:17
A maidservant came in to make the fire and light it. And although I didn't believe at that time,
21:24
I had 10 more minutes to live. And there was no hope for me but in the mercy of God.
21:29
And if I didn't seek that mercy, I couldn't expect to have it. Yet there was this woman there.
21:36
And I was waiting till she left the room, but she had no intention of leaving the room. Until she got the fire going.
21:43
And so by the grace of God, I knelt down before that girl.
21:49
It was a turning point in my life. I believe if I'd had that, at that time resisted the
21:56
Holy Ghost, I would have resisted him once too often.
22:02
But by God's grace, I was not prevented. I did pray. And though I am not what
22:08
I should be. I am not the man I was.
22:14
I mention this because I believe that every man has in his life a turning point. I believe that the sin against the
22:22
Holy Ghost is grieving the Spirit once too often. Wow.
22:28
So that was the time of his conversion. And the next day, he told the servant girl that God had heard his prayer.
22:39
He told his wife and children. He sat at his desk with pen and paper and wrote to everybody.
22:48
Friends, family. And told them all, I've become a Christian. He was quiet and gentle.
22:55
That evening at eight o 'clock, he joined the family in family worship. He himself read a portion of scripture, made a few comments on it.
23:04
No hysteria. He prayed then, finding in God his pardon and peace.
23:12
And during the months that followed, he was often in prayer. Stretch out on a rug with his mouth near the thin carpet, humbling himself before God.
23:22
Stopped smoking his cigars instantly. He was addicted to nicotine. Couldn't play billions again.
23:28
For months, he read nothing but the Bible. Not even the newspaper. The Crimean War was taking place.
23:34
He had no interest. The struggle, even greater than the Crimean War, was taking place in his own soul.
23:44
His friends couldn't believe it because they knew what a wild man he had been.
23:50
But he wrote in the margin of the Bible concerning Saul of Tarsus' conversion.
23:57
Doubted by the early church, he wrote these words. So it was. It was wrong no more. And no wonder.
24:03
And yet for all that, he does believe that the Lord has spoken to him.
24:09
To him be the gratitude and the glory. And then the words of Festus to Paul in Acts 26, that I believe you're mad.
24:21
And Bromwell wrote in the margin, Christians in all ages have been called mad.
24:27
But who was the most mad? Paul or King Festus? So he started to go to church and he started to travel and settle down in one congregation.
24:44
He had enormous fiery darts thrown to him in those early weeks.
24:52
He felt under great conviction and so unworthy and so afraid.
25:04
But he put his trust in Jesus and looked to Jesus again and found his comfort there in the
25:18
Savior. He said aloud to himself, you think by your reason or your deep thinking that you can find out
25:26
God or know Christ better than the Bible can teach you to know him? If you can't, then why are you perplexing your brain with worse than useless speculation?
25:38
Why aren't you learning from scripture and holding on to what you've got? You must either make a
25:44
God and religion for yourself and stand and fall entirely and eternally on the
25:51
God you've made. Or you must take the religion of Jesus Christ as revealed to you in his word.
25:59
You can't take a little of God's teaching and a little of your own. You can't believe on the
26:05
Lord Jesus Christ and the wisdom of your own heart at the same time. Choose then, choose now, choose forever by which you will stand or fall.
26:17
And he put his hand on the open Bible and he said, God helping me, I will stand or fall by the
26:24
Lord Jesus Christ. I will put my trust in his truth and in his teaching as I find it in the written word of God.
26:34
Doing that, as sure as the Lord Jesus Christ is the truth, I must be forgiven and saved.
26:42
And so he submitted his intellect like a child to the teaching of God's word.
26:49
Praise God. Now, how old was Bramlow at that time? He was 45. Wow, he came to faith late in life.
26:57
He did come late in life and he lived for 20 years and he filled those 20 years with wonderful service of the
27:06
Lord. Well, I'm going to read one question for you before we go to our first break. And by the way,
27:12
I forgot to tell Dewey Roberts. Dewey, I forgot to tell you the good news that you have won a free copy of the book that we are discussing,
27:21
Bramlow North, The All -Around Evangelist, compliments of our friends at Reformation Heritage Books.
27:29
So make sure we have the best mailing address that you want me to use for cvbbs .com,
27:35
Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service, to ship this book out to you at no charge to you or to us.
27:42
The question that we have right now is from Harrison in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
27:49
Harrison says, that was a deeply moving reading and it reminded me, and I think it should remind all of us fellow
27:56
Calvinists about the fact that we should not shy away from biblical terms like the term choosing life or death, etc.
28:07
Of course, we know as Reformed Christians that only God can enable us to choose rightly and be saved by giving us a new heart and filling us with the
28:17
Holy Spirit and bringing us to a rebirth. But at the same time, it seems to me that many
28:24
Calvinists shy away from the words that Bramlow North used. Do you agree with this assessment?
28:32
Well, I wouldn't say many. I would say some.
28:40
Confused and muddled in that. But I think most of us have a
28:47
Bible mind and we know that the
28:53
Word of God comes, as Joshua says to the people, choose ye this day whom you will serve.
29:00
Amen. But as for me and my house, I will serve the Lord. We want people to come to a decision.
29:07
We want them to make a commitment of their bodies as living sacrifices to God, their minds to become the minds of Christ, to take this
29:21
Savior as their own personal Savior. We want our young people and we want old people to make a choice like that, don't we?
29:32
Amen. And we have to go to our first break right now. If anyone else would like to join us, our email address is chrisarnsen at gmail .com,
29:40
C -H -R -I -S -A -R -N -Z -E -N at gmail .com. And please give us at least your first name, your city and state, and your country of residence if you live outside the

USA and only remain anonymous if your question involves a personal and private matter. And Harrison in Mechanicsburg, give us your full mailing address because you have also won a free copy of Bramlow North, the all -around evangelist by our guest today,

Hi, I'm Stephan Lindblad, Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at IRBS Theological Seminary in Mansfield, Texas.
33:25
I accepted this call to teach at the seminary because I'm firmly convinced that the people of God in the churches of our
33:34
Lord Jesus Christ need to be firmly grounded in the truth of Holy Scripture. I'm excited to be teaching such subjects as the nature of theology and the doctrine of Scripture and even the doctrine of the person and work of Jesus Christ.
33:49
Our churches and our people need to be well grounded in these truths. Indeed, future ministers of the gospel need to understand these truths in order to proclaim them to all of God's people.

35:35
Iron Sharpens Iron Radio on the air. Pastors, are your pew bibles tattered and falling apart?

Consider restocking your pews with the NASB, and tell the publishers you heard about them from Chris Arnzen on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio.

I'm James White of Alpha Omega Ministries, and my friend Chris Arnzen and I are excited to be attending another
36:13
G3 conference together in Atlanta, Georgia, Thursday, January 16th through Saturday, January 18th, on a theme that is vitally important to all of us,
36:22
Worship Matters. I'll be on the speaking lineup with Eric Thomas, Joel Beakey, Paul Washer, Steve Lawson, Phil Johnson, Tom Askell, Votie Balcom, and the world -renowned preacher, teacher, and author,
36:33
John MacArthur. A fascinating new addition to the roster is Kosti Hinn, nephew of the notorious false teacher,
36:40
Benny Hinn. Kosti has repented of the word -faith heresies of his youth, and is now a Reformed Baptist pastor and cessationist in California.
36:48
Come join me and Chris Arnzen at G3 2020, January 16th through the 18th, in Atlanta, by registering at g3conference .com,
36:58
that's g3conference .com. See you there. As host of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, I frequently get requests from listeners for church recommendations.
37:19
A church I've been strongly recommending as far back as the 1980s is Grace Covenant Baptist Church in Flemington, New Jersey, pastored by Alan Dunn.
37:29
Grace Covenant Baptist Church believes it's God's prerogative to determine how he shall be worshiped and how he shall be represented in the world.
37:37
They believe churches need to turn to the Bible to discover what to include in worship and how to worship
37:43
God in spirit and truth. Grace Covenant Baptist Church endeavors to maintain a
37:48
God -centered focus. Reading, preaching, and hearing the Word of God, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, baptism, and communion are the scriptural elements of their corporate worship, performed with faith, joy, and sobriety.

38:28
Tell Pastor Dunn that you heard about Grace Covenant Baptist Church on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio. Welcome back.
38:45
This is Chris Arnzen, if you just tuned us in. Our guest today for the full two hours is
38:50
Jeff Thomas, who, beginning in 1965, served for over 50 years as pastor of Alfred Place Baptist Church in Aberystwyth, Wales.
38:59
And he is now retired from pastoral ministry but serving God's people as an itinerant evangelist and an author.
39:08
And I'm so glad that he has dedicated two days to be on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio today and tomorrow.
39:13
Today we are discussing his new book, a biography, Brown Law North, The All -Around
39:18
Evangelist. And tomorrow, God willing, we'll have him back to discuss How Can I Please God and Everything, two books published by Reformation Heritage Books.
39:27
And we have a listener question. And I'm not sure if this listener is joking when he says this.
39:36
I don't know if he knows you personally. But his name, he's actually been a guest on this program before.
39:42
His name is Brad Zell, and he is the Minister of Outreach at the Bible Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, North Carolina.
39:50
And he says, Chris, please ask Brother Thomas to sing Jesus, Lover of My Soul to my favorite tune,
39:57
Aberystwyth. Do you have any idea what he's talking about? Do you sing this song, and do you know the melody,
40:04
Aberystwyth? Oh, of course. Of course, I've known it since a child.
40:10
And there's a plaque on the Congregational Church just down the road from Alfred Place that says it was in this church, first of all, a hundred years ago, that the tune
40:24
Aberystwyth was played, you know, Jesus, lover of my soul.
40:31
Let me to thy bosom fly. That's the tune, and it's a wonderful minor key to wonderful, wonderful words of the writer.
40:46
So, yes, that's great. I'm very familiar with that melody, but I didn't know it was called
40:54
Aberystwyth. And I know the hymn as well. Yes, that's right. Well, thank you,
41:00
Brad. And if you give me your full mailing address, Brad, you've also won a free copy of the book that we are discussing today,
41:07
Brownlow North, The All -Around Evangelists. And we have another question from a listener, and a very faithful listener, and also a very generous supporter, financially, of Iron Trap Design Radio, also from North Carolina.
41:24
We've got two North Carolinians in a row here. His name is Grady, and he is from Asheboro, North Carolina.
41:32
And I have to enlarge his email because the text is very tiny. Okay, he says, thanks again,
41:38
Chris, for bringing Dr. Thomas back to your show. Dr. Thomas, besides his sermons, did
41:43
Reverend North have any other works published, such as commentaries or memoirs? Well, there are the two works.
41:55
We'll go with This Man, the question that was asked when
42:02
Jacob was searching for a bride, and that's a lovely evangelistic book.
42:13
And then The Rich Man and Lazarus. Sometimes those titles are changed, but those are the two most well -known books.
42:22
I've discovered now a wealth of other books and tracts that he has written, and I would love to bring out a companion volume to this biography, the selected works of Raoul North.
42:43
And he's got sermons, for example, on the
42:50
Gadarene demoniac, and they are great. And then a series of sermons on the exodus from Egypt and the testings and trials and doubts and restorations of Israel on their way to the
43:09
Promised Land. And that's very helpful and relevant. And so, yeah,
43:14
I'm going to have a go, and maybe somebody in my church here will help and will be prepared to type these out for me, and we'll put them on a disc, and we'll see if Reformation Heritage Books will be interested in bringing out a companion volume.
43:33
If this one sells well, people will be interested to know more about this wonderful evangelist.
43:39
Praise God. And, by the way, Grady, make sure we have your full mailing address so we can mail you out a free copy of the book that we are discussing, compliments of our friends at Reformation Heritage Books, and also compliments of our friends at Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service, cvbbs .com,
43:56
who will be shipping it out to you at no cost to you or to Iron Trip and Zion Radio. We have
44:02
Susan Margaret in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, who said,
44:07
I heard you describing the rebellious life of Brown Low North before he was saved, but I found it interesting that even while an unregenerate sinner, he still could not tolerate blasphemy.
44:20
Can you explain that further? Is there any other details in his life that you are aware of that would make him sensitive to blasphemy and so opposed to it, even though he was still enslaved to the darkness of his sin?
44:33
Yes, that is fascinating. That's the wonder of a mother who never stopped praying and was a wonderful example to him, and how she treasured the name of her
44:49
Savior, and every casual reference to Christ or people lacing their speeches with a reference to, oh my
45:01
God, to make them seem funnier people than they are, that would be an arrow in his heart.
45:11
There was an earlier grace there convicting him and enlightening him, so adultery was something he could never think of, or theft, carnal sins like that, but he just lived for the pleasure of sport, the huge idol of our day, and his sport was shooting, and his sport was riding, and his sport was fishing, and he lived for those things.
45:50
And on Sundays, he, never taking the name of the
45:57
Lord in vain, he and a company of his friends would go off riding with their guns, passing people on their way to full churches where the blessing of God was being poured out, and he would just ride past them without a thought for them on his way to get a brace of gross from some will or other.
46:22
That was the tension. The good that he should be doing, he wasn't doing, and the evil that he should not have been doing, he did, and he was a wretched man, and he came under great conviction at the time, and when he first became a
46:44
Christian, Satan's darts struck him, and he had whispers, there's no
46:49
God, there's no God. It sounded in meetings, he'd bow down, kneel down to pray, there's no
46:55
God. He'd walk in the garden, there's no God, and then he would have to, almost losing his reason, say aloud,
47:03
God is, God is there, he is a God, and then the whispers would start again, there's no
47:09
God, there's no God. His anchor verse, which he would cast himself upon, were the words, him that cometh to me,
47:18
I will in no wise cast out, and he never quoted any other verse as frequently in his preaching or in his private counseling to anxious men and women, more often than not the assurance that the
47:35
Lord doesn't cast out those, if their faith is as thin as a spider's thread, if it is lodged in Christ, he will preserve that thread, and it will take us across the lake of fire, and take us across the bottomless pit, and it will put us down, fatherless before him, with exceeding joy, in the great day.
47:58
Amen. If you could, I'd like you to spend a few minutes just describing his entrance into the ministry, and where he begins evangelizing, and you were talking about how
48:10
Ireland in particular seemed to be very receptive to his messages, could you just speak for a few minutes uninterrupted about that?
48:19
He started off with truck distribution, and with great hesitation, it would make him look ridiculous, people would laugh at him, but he saw an old woman, and he cautiously took a truck out of her pocket and gave it to her, and then another old woman, and he offered to her, she said, thank you, and then the test came, and a policeman came walking along the road, and he offered one to him, and the policeman said, thank you,
48:50
Mr. Knorr, so for 14 years he carried a supply of trucks in his pocket, and only one occasion did an atheist refuse to take one, and then secondly, then he started to visit the sick people in the congregation, the free church of Eldin, where he was a member, and he would sit with them in their poor bedridden quarters, and he would pay for gas to warm their wounds, and he would take some oranges, and he would pee with them, and sit with them, and he would pray with them, and they loved him to visit them, and then thirdly, he started to develop evangelistic visiting, there's that woman in the porter's lodge, go and speak to her, he felt, the flesh said, oh no, no, keep what you've got to yourself, but the spirit gave him no rest, he went to the woman, read the bible to her, told her what the lord had done, then the spirit said, there's a washerwoman in the town, go to her, and read, and pray with her, and he read, and prayed with her, and then a young woman said, can you come to my father, and speak to him, he's such a bad man, and he went to him, and talked to him, and the man was convicted, and then the man said, will you come back,
50:22
I have some friends who would like to hear you, and 60 men gathered there, and the meetings increased in size, and he was speaking every night, one evening, 200 people turned up in a barn to hear him, they were straight preaching, he went to London to visit his mother, and one
50:45
Sunday, he called to a young Scotsman, and the Scotsman said, I'm preaching in the street, will you come with me, yes,
50:53
I'll come with you, he said, they went to King's Cross together, and the man preached, he wasn't much of a preacher, and he was having no impact, and then some of the people said, let's show that fat man who the dark eye is, and he stood on a street corner near King's Cross, and he began to preach, and immediately people stopped, and they gathered, and they were riveted, and when he was tired, they said, go on, don't stop, and then finally on a
51:24
Sunday, that preacher was ill, they had no one, and they came to him, and they said, will you preach for us, well,
51:31
I won't take the first part of the service, if you will take that, I'll preach, and people were greatly helped, and another church heard about it, and so he just very naturally drifted into preaching more and more, and crowds and crowds came to hear him, and then of course, the free church had their general assembly with all the great men then that had come out under charmers,
52:07
Cunningham, and Bannerman, and Rabbi Duncan, and they all loved him, and they all loved to listen to him, and they set him apart officially, and though he had not trained in their college, he had gone to Oxford, and he had studied in Oxford, and that was acceptable to them, and he was set apart as the church's evangelist, and from then, of course, many, many doors were opened to him, and he spent the rest of his life preaching the gospel.
52:43
Amen, and by the way, brother, I don't know if you changed anything in how you were recording, or not recording, but whatever kind of a phone device you're using, but it's much better.
52:53
I mean, your quality and your crispness and clearness has improved, so keep doing whatever you just did.
53:01
Very good. Yes, I haven't done anything different, so maybe the line under the
53:07
Atlantic is better. Well, we have to go to our midway break right now, and please be patient, folks, because this is our longer than normal break, because Grace Life Radio, 90 .1
53:19
FM in Lake City, Florida, requires of us to take a longer break in the middle of the show, which they air twice a day, by the way, in pre -recorded format.
53:28
They have to, by FCC regulations, localize Iron Trip and Zion Radio to Lake City, Florida, so they air their own public service announcements and other local matters while we air our globally heard commercials, so please use this time wisely.
53:43
We ask of you to write down the information provided by our advertisers so that you can more frequently and successfully patronize them, and remember, folks, we need our advertisers to exist, so I know that some of you complain about the number of ads that we air, but these are necessary in order for Iron Trip and Zion Radio to exist, so please try to patronize them as often as you can, but also write down questions for Jeff Thomas and send them to chrisarnson at gmail .com.
54:09
chrisarnson at gmail .com. Don't go away, God willing, we'll be right back after these messages from our sponsors, and by the way, send your mailing address if you haven't already to get the free book,

forward slash podcast. Hi, this is
55:45
John Sampson, pastor of King's Church in Peoria, Arizona. Taking a moment of your day to talk about Chris Arnson and the
55:53
Iron Sharpens Iron podcast. I consider Chris a true friend and a man of high integrity. He's a skilled interviewer who's not afraid to ask the big penetrating questions, while always defending the key doctrines of the
56:05
Christian faith. I've always been happy to point people to this podcast knowing it's one of the very few safe places on the internet where folk won't be led astray.
56:13
I believe this podcast needs to be heard far and wide. This is a day of great spiritual compromise, and yet God has raised
56:20
Chris up for just such a time, and knowing this, it's up to us as members of the body of Christ to stand with such a ministry in prayer and in finances.
56:30
I'm pleased to do so, and would like to ask you to prayerfully consider joining me in supporting
56:35
Iron Sharpens Iron financially. Would you consider sending either a one -time gift, or even becoming a regular monthly partner with this ministry?
56:44
I know it would be a huge encouragement to Chris if you would. All the details can be found at ironsharpensironradio .com

57:01
I'm so grateful to our sovereign God that while manning an exhibitor's booth for Iron Sharpens Iron, a major Bible conference,
57:07
I providentially met Pastor Andrew Smith of Christ Reformed Community Church just south of Jacksonville, Florida, right off I -95 in St.
57:16
Johns County. Andrew is certainly the kind of pastor that is a perfect match for my radio show, and has already proven to be an ideal guest.
57:25
Christ Reformed Community Church shares my conviction that God is both creator and sustainer of the universe.
57:32
He rules and reigns providentially over our lives. He directs not only the historical events of the world, but also the personal events of individuals.
57:42
I agree with Christ Reformed Community Church that the very purpose of the church is to make disciples, that we are tasked with the responsibility to evangelize locally, nationally, and globally, and that we are to equip the saints for the work of service.
57:57
Unlike the man -centered, seeker -sensitive movement, they do not gauge the success of biblical discipleship by how many people are in a church, but by the faithful ministry of God's Word and Gospel.

I'm Pastor Andrew Smith, and I'd like to urge you to consider joining Christ Reformed Community Church of St.
58:40
John's, Florida, in financially supporting Iron Sharpens Iron Radio. Got to tell you, for my money,
58:54
Chris Arnzen's radio program is just the best. Iron criticizing it.
59:02
I think that's what it's called. This is Todd Friel of Wretched Radio and TV, with Phil Johnson of Grace to You, inviting everybody to come to the
59:11
G3 conference, which has almost instantly become one of the best conferences in the country. And it is.
59:17
It's a great conference. I love it. And Chris Arnzen was there last year. He's been there, I think, every year.
59:22
It's great to see him there. You and I actually did some recordings in the lobby at that place, which was a highlight for me.
59:28
Tons of great speakers. And no matter where you are in the building, you will hear Chris Arnzen's laugh.
59:35
And that's worth the price of admission alone. If you would like to join Phil, me, Chris, and a cavalcade of great preachers, so it should be a cavalcade of great preachers, and me, g3conference .com,
59:48

01:00:05

It's such a joy to witness and experience fellowship with people of God, like the dear saints at Hope Reformed Baptist Church in Corham, who have an intensely passionate desire to continue digging deeper and deeper into the unfathomable riches of Christ in His Holy Word, and to enthusiastically proclaim
01:00:49
Christ Jesus the King and His doctrines of sovereign grace in Suffolk County, Long Island, and beyond.

I have a great love for getting Bibles and other documents vital to my ministry rebound to preserve and ensure their longevity.
01:06:21
And besides that, they feel so good. I'm so delighted I discovered Post -Tenebrous Lux Bible rebinding.
01:06:28
No radio ad will be long enough to sing their praises sufficiently, but I'll give it a shot. Jeffrey Rice of Post -Tenebrous
01:06:34
Lux is a remarkably gifted craftsman and artisan. All his work is done by hand, from the cutting, to the pleating of corners, to the perimeter stitching.
01:06:44
Jeffrey uses the finest in buttery soft imported leathers in a wide variety of gorgeous colors, like the turquoise goat skin tanned in Italy used for my

I want to tell you about a man I have personally known for many years. His name is Dan Buttafuoco.
01:07:51
Dan is a personal injury and medical malpractice lawyer, but not the type that typically comes to mind.
01:07:57
Dan cares about people and is a theologian himself. Recently, he wrote a book titled
01:08:03
Consider the Evidence for the Bible. Ravi Zacharias wrote the foreword.
01:08:08
Dan also has a master's degree in theology. Dan handles serious injury and medical malpractice cases in all 50 states.
01:08:16
He represents many Christians in serious injury matters all over the country. Dan is an exceptional trial lawyer.
01:08:24
He wrote the test for the National Board of Trial Advocacy, and currently his firm has over 100 cases that have settled for $1 million or more and in approximately 10 different states.
01:08:37
In Illinois, his lawyers had the fourth largest settlement in the state's history. In New York, his case involving a paralyzed police officer made the front page of the
01:08:47
Law Journal. If you have a serious personal injury or medical malpractice claim in any state,
01:08:53
I recommend that you call Dan. Consultations are free. There is no fee unless you win.

Gary Kimbrell, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Laurel, Mississippi. God tells us in James 1 -27 that pure and undefiled religion is a visit to fatherless and widows in their affliction.
01:09:32
In the providence of God, three years ago, I discovered a poor small church outside Lusaka, Zambia, in a township called
01:09:37
Kabanana, who are taking care of 24 orphans. I found them just at the time when they had lost all their funding.
01:09:43
What was I to do? Could I just say, God bless you and walk away? The situation of the children set heavily upon me.
01:09:49
As I was praying concerning this need, it came to me, I trust from the Lord, to tell the orphans' plight to a broader audience.
01:09:54
The entire need for their clothing, food, education, and some medical services is $73 per month per child.
01:10:01
If just 50 of us would give $35 a month, we could meet the need. Bethlehem Baptist Church will pay the fee to get the funds there, so if you give a dollar, a dollar will get to the orphans.
01:10:10
In this season of hope and giving, will you consider giving hope to 24 orphans? Please send your gift of any amount to Bethlehem Baptist Church, 838
01:10:18
Reed Road, Laurel, Mississippi 39443, or donate through our website bbclaurel .com.
01:10:26
Again, the address is Bethlehem Baptist Church, 838 Reed Road, Laurel, Mississippi 39443, or bbclaurel .com.

Solid Ground Christian Books is honored to be a weekly sponsor of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio. And Mike Gaydosh, the owner of Solid Ground Christian Books, happens to be a mutual friend of my guest today,
01:11:47
Jeff Thomas, and he was my guest yesterday on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, Mike Gaydosh that is, and he was relating a very moving story of how powerfully one of Jeff Thomas' sermons affected him and many other pastors at a
01:12:01
Banner of Truth conference here in Pennsylvania a number of years ago. And I'm sure you fondly remember our brother
01:12:08
Mike Gaydosh? I certainly do. On that sermon, there was some blessing that was more than usual upon us all.
01:12:19
Oh wow, you even remember the sermon. Oh yeah. Well, Mike Gaydosh is a very important supporter financially of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio.
01:12:28
So please folks, every time you purchase a book from Solid Ground Christian Books, you are helping to further ensure a longer future for Iron Sharpens Iron Radio because of the fact that they are a very key sponsor.
01:12:41
And so please remember, with all the gift -giving needs that you have with the holidays coming up, always remember solid -ground -books .com,
01:12:49
solid -ground -books .com, and always remember to mention Chris Arns and Iron Sharpens Iron Radio. Before I return to Jeff Thomas, I just have a couple of announcements to make as far as special events that are coming up.
01:13:00
One of them featuring Jeff Thomas, and that one is the Foundations Conference in New York City.
01:13:06
That's going to be held Thursday and Friday, December 19th and 20th right in Manhattan. And I can't think of a better place in the universe to be spending a part of the
01:13:14
Christmas season than in New York City. And certainly December 19th and 20th is certainly right in the heart of that season.
01:13:21
This is for men in ministry leadership only. So because of the fact that they have a very small venue, you can only seat less than 200 people, they have to restrict attendance to men in ministry leadership.
01:13:32
So if that includes you, you should join me, God willing, on December 19th and 20th, that's
01:13:39
Thursday and Friday, in New York City. And the speakers include the aforementioned Jeff Thomas and also
01:13:45
Dr. Stephen J. Lawson and Paul Washer, a young man, Reverend Armand Tomassian, who
01:13:50
I am strongly confident over the next decade is going to become a household name amongst Reformed Christians. He is that powerful and gifted, a young man with abilities far beyond his youth.
01:14:01
And Richard Caldwell Jr. and Andrew Quigley are on the roster. I have never heard them preach yet, but since sermonaudio .com
01:14:07
selected them for this conference, they must be magnificent. So if you want to join me Thursday and Friday, December 19th and 20th, in Manhattan for the
01:14:14
Foundations Conference, go to thefoundationsconference .com, thefoundationsconference .com.
01:14:20
And then coming up in January, Thursday, January 16th through Saturday, January 18th,
01:14:25
I'll be heading back to the G3 Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, at the
01:14:30
Georgia International Convention Center. It's actually technically College Park, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. And this is always a monumental event.
01:14:38
They have over 5 ,000 people that come to this event every year, and there's a good reason. The speakers are absolutely extraordinary, and the roster is enormous.
01:14:47
The aforementioned Stephen J. Lawson will be at this conference as well. Dr. James R. White of Alpha Omega Ministries, one of my dearest friends since 1995.
01:14:56
Phil Johnson, the Executive Director of John MacArthur's ministry, grace to you. And Phil Johnson has the dubious reputation of being the most frequently interviewed guest in the history of Iron Trump and Zion Radio going back to 2005.
01:15:09
My friend Todd Friel of Wretched TV and Wretched Radio. Derek Thomas, a name that is definitely renowned amongst
01:15:15
Reformed Christians, a phenomenal, extraordinary Presbyterian preacher, teacher, pastor, author, conference speaker.
01:15:24
My friend Dr. Tom Askell, who is the Executive Director of the
01:15:30
Founders Ministries, which is the Calvinistic ministry in the Southern Baptist Convention. Stephen J. Nichols, the
01:15:35
President of Reformation Bible College, the college founded by the late R .C. Sproul and Ligonier Ministries.
01:15:41
And as you heard, Dr. John MacArthur himself has been added to the lineup. I would go even if John MacArthur was just preaching by himself.
01:15:50
If you want to join me Thursday through Saturday, January 16th through the 18th at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park, Georgia, go to g3conference .com,
01:15:59
g3conference .com. This January's theme is Worship Matters, a very important theme in the body of Christ.
01:16:06
And I would strongly urge you, if you have a business or parachurch organization, to register for an exhibitor's booth as well, because with John MacArthur added to this lineup,
01:16:16
I have a feeling they're going to exceed their normal attendance of over 5 ,000 to over 6 ,000.
01:16:21
That's just an educated guess on my part, but obviously with a name of that renown,
01:16:27
John MacArthur, I'm sure that it's going to add to the attendance. So it would be wise to have an exhibitor's booth, just like I will be manning for my fourth year in a row at the
01:16:36
G3 Conference. Go to g3conference .com, g3conference .com. Please mention Chris Arnzen of Iron Trap and Zion Radio as your source for hearing about them.
01:16:45
Last but not least, if you love this show, you don't want it to disappear from the airwaves, you love the preaching and teaching and topics that are rarely ever heard anywhere on other programs, please help us keep on the air or remain on the air by donating as much as you can and as frequently as you can and as generously as you can by going to irontrapandzionradio .com,
01:17:10
click support, then click to donate now. You could donate instantly with a debit or credit card by doing so and if you want to advertise with me, send in an email to chrisarnzen at gmail .com
01:17:21
and put advertising in the subject line and as long as whatever it is you're promoting is compatible with what
01:17:26
I believe, you don't have to believe identical with me, identically I should say with me, but you need to be promoting something that's compatible with what
01:17:33
I believe. So send that email to me at chrisarnzen at gmail .com and put advertising in the subject line.
01:17:40
Of course, you could always mail in checks the old -fashioned way via snail mail to the address that appears on the screen when you click support at irontrapandzionradio .com.
01:17:52
And also folks, please remember that I don't want anybody to ever siphon money away from their regular giving they're accustomed to to their local church where they are a member in order to give to irontrapandzionradio .com.
01:18:07
Never do that and never put your family in financial jeopardy by giving to irontrapandzionradio .com. Those two things are commands of God in scripture, supporting for your church, supporting your church
01:18:16
I should say, and supporting your family. Supporting IronTrapandZionRadio is obviously not a command of God, but if you are financially blessed above and beyond your ability to obey those two commands and you have extra money for recreational purposes and all sorts of reasons, please use a portion of that money to help us remain on the air if indeed you love the show and listen to it regularly and share the free downloadable mp3s.
01:18:40
Go to irontrapandzionradio .com, click support, then click click to donate now. By the way folks, if you are not a member of a local bible -believing church and you're not even prayerfully looking for one, please rectify that situation.
01:18:52
You're living in rebellion against God. Send me an email to chrisarnsen at gmail .com and put I need a church.
01:18:57
I have lists of biblically faithful churches all over the world and I have already helped a number of people in the
01:19:03
IronTrapandZionRadio audience find churches near where they live, where they have either joined and become members, or where they have visited when they're on vacation, or where they have shared that information with family, friends, and loved ones who are without churches all over the world.
01:19:16
In fact I just got a request to find a church in South Korea from a listener. So please send me an email to chrisarnsen at gmail .com
01:19:23
and put I need a church in the subject line. That's also the email address where you can send in a question for Jeff Thomas on Brownlow North, the subject of our discussion today.
01:19:32
And you can even ask a theological question as well. That's chrisarnsen at gmail .com, chrisarnsen at gmail .com.
01:19:39
As always give us your first name, your city and state, your country of residence if you live outside the USA. Only remain anonymous if your question involves a personal and private matter.
01:19:48
As far as the Founders Conference where you will be preaching, God willing,
01:19:54
December 19th and 20th in New York Rev. Thomas, can you tell us if you know what subject you'll be speaking on?
01:20:02
Well they asked me to give them a title and I always do it with reluctance because other things might happen in the next month.
01:20:13
But I said that I will speak on being filled with all joy and peace as you believe in God.
01:20:23
Praise God, what a great subject. I certainly need to hear that because I have been lacking in joy and peace lately through my own sinfulness being anxious for many things other than as Jesus commanded, be anxious for nothing.
01:20:35
So I'm looking forward to that. Good, good, good, good. And going back to Brownlow North, we have a question.
01:20:46
Let's see, we have CJ in Lindenhurst, Long Island, New York who wants to know, why is it that a man of great reputation from an era past is very little known today?
01:21:03
Yeah, well I can only say that 60 years ago when
01:21:09
I was a Christian student, and there were hundreds of men that today we know, men like John Owen, Thomas Mountain, Rutherford, the
01:21:26
Reformers, they were so little known. And J .C
01:21:33
.R. was hardly known. Now he is loved and known. Things are so much better now, and publishing houses are bringing out their books.
01:21:45
I said once to Joe Beakey, it must be one new book a day comes out that you willingly have on your shelves.
01:21:54
No, he said to me, two new books a day come out. So there is a tremendous hunger to know more of the wealth of the godly men, men from Princeton, and men from the
01:22:07
Free Church College in Edinburgh, and all the colleagues and co -workers of Brownlow North.
01:22:17
They all are being discovered, and the wisdom of their lives is helping us to know how to be better servants and better preachers.
01:22:29
And C .J., you've also won a free copy of the book Brownlow North, The All -Around Evangelist.
01:22:34
Send us your email, your mailing address I should say, so that cvbbs .com can ship that out to you.
01:22:41
And that's compliments of Reformation Heritage Books. We have John in Bangor, Maine, who wants to know,
01:22:49
I'm sorry if I missed this because I've tuned in late, but I was wondering if Brownlow North practiced a biblical ecumenism.
01:22:57
I do not mean the liberal version of it today, where believers link arms with apostates, but I mean, did he have a healthy ecumenism with those of other denominations who still embraced and proclaimed the true gospel?
01:23:11
Oh, that was one of the things that attracted me to him, the basic things.
01:23:19
For example, six short rules for young Christians. One, never neglect daily private prayer.
01:23:27
When you pray, remember God is present, that he hears your prayer.
01:23:32
Two, never neglect daily private Bible reading. And when you read, remember that God is speaking to you and that you need to believe and act upon what he says.
01:23:43
I believe all backsliding begins with the neglect of these two rules. Three, never let a day pass without trying to do something for Jesus.
01:23:53
Every night, reflect on what Jesus has done for you, and then ask yourself, what am
01:23:59
I doing for him? Four, if ever you are in doubt as to a thing being right or wrong, go to your room, kneel down, ask
01:24:09
God's blessing upon it. If you can't do this, it's wrong. Five, never take your
01:24:16
Christianity from Christians, or argue that because such and such people do so.
01:24:22
So, you can do it. You ought to ask yourself, how would
01:24:28
Christ act in my place? Then strive to follow him. Six, never believe what you feel if it contradicts
01:24:39
God's word. Ask yourself, can what I feel be true if God's word is true?
01:24:47
And if both can't be true, believe God and make your own heart the liar.
01:24:55
So, that is the sort of man, those are his priorities. When I read it,
01:25:01
I'm a Baptist pastor, and Brown O 'North was a Presbyterian preacher, and I never felt the slightest strain in learning from him and feeling this is my dear father in Christ.
01:25:20
Praise God. Now, before I take any other listener question, I want you to really make sure, over the next few minutes, that you let our listeners know about the most important things they should be aware of in regard to the life and legacy of Brown O 'North.
01:25:36
Okay, okay. Do you want me to start on that now?
01:25:43
Yes, yes. Okay. Brown O 'North was obviously not only a most godly man, but he was a man of very fine intelligence, and people people tried to get him to change from a direct, biblical, evangelistic appeal to men and women to be rather clever in his exegesis.
01:26:19
And he took that word seriously on one occasion, and he began to preach.
01:26:25
And after five minutes, he dried up and apologized to them all and said, Oh, I've tried to be clever tonight.
01:26:33
What I want is to tell you about my Savior, Jesus Christ, and then, oh, what power and what blessing was his.
01:26:43
He had these wonderful sayings, aphorisms, that stuck in people's memories, that they took away with them.
01:26:54
For example, this, the precise moment will come when you will have been five minutes in eternity.
01:27:03
Or again, trying without praying and praying without trying, both are a mockery.
01:27:11
Let your motto be, pray and try, pray and try.
01:27:17
Or again, you cannot serve God and mammon. It's not said, do not serve
01:27:24
God and mammon. It says, you can't serve God and mammon.
01:27:32
Or again, as long as a man lets God alone, the devil will let him alone.
01:27:41
Or again, a Christian is not afraid of death, but of sin.
01:27:48
An unconverted man is not afraid of sin, but of death.
01:27:55
And again, godliness with contentment is great gain, but contentment without godliness is the greatest curse.
01:28:05
Wow, praise God. Those are wonderful sayings, aren't they? Memorable, they stick in your mind.
01:28:11
Amen. Let's see, we have Bobby in Hartsdale, New York, and he asks, what particular branch of the
01:28:25
Presbyterian Church was Brownlow North a member of and where he was ordained? I don't even know, back then, were there many different kinds of Presbyterians?
01:28:34
I guess this is the 19th century. There was one great division when the
01:28:42
Church of Scotland was under the hands of local girls and squires and wealthy local landlords, and they had the sole right to give the pastorate of congregations to men they approved of.
01:29:09
And under Dr. Chalmers, there was the great disruption and hundreds of churches and ministers left the
01:29:24
General Assembly and formed the Free Church of Scotland. And that, the
01:29:30
Free Church then, was enormously powerful and instrumental, and the great men that we know of that I've mentioned already, like M 'Cheyne and the
01:29:42
Bonner Brothers and Chalmers and Bannerman, those men, they were the great theological minds, and combining it with the most sweet and humble submission to the teaching of Scripture and an evangelistic earnestness that took men like Burns to China where he never returned and established the gospel on which
01:30:19
Hudson Taylor built his work. So it was in the Free Church of Scotland, a church which later merged again when liberalism entered the
01:30:30
Free Church of Scotland towards the end of the 19th century, but a group continued and continues still to maintain the evangelicalism of the
01:30:40
Free Church of Scotland and the Free Church continuing today. Excellent.
01:30:45
We have, let's see here, we have B .B.
01:30:51
in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, who asks, one of the greatest criticisms we have as Reformed Christians is that our preachers are very often dry and dull and give lectures rather than preach sermons.
01:31:08
I know for a fact that is not at all a description of you because you preach with such great passion, but I was wondering what kind of preacher, if we know, was
01:31:20
Brownlow North? I know that we cannot have recordings of him, but are there written descriptions of the manner with which he preached the gospel?
01:31:28
Right. Well, when he was set apart as the evangelist at the
01:31:36
General Assembly, they gave him a charge and then he preached a message about the situation in Scotland today.
01:31:50
Why is the Holy Spirit so little among us? And you have to really go back behind the dull and lifeless nature of so much preaching to the absence of the
01:32:07
Holy Spirit's ministry through the pulpit to people in the pew.
01:32:14
And he said the reasons for this absence, which he felt so sharply, was firstly the neglect of united prayer.
01:32:24
People weren't gathering together in the congregations and coming to the prayer meeting.
01:32:31
Oh, Christians, go more to prayer meetings than you do. And when you go to the prayer meeting, try and realize more that there is usefulness in prayer.
01:32:42
Secondly, I don't believe that there's a more effective system in Christendom than our rule by elders.
01:32:50
We need elders to work and go into the lanes and alleys of the cities and pray and speak and try to lead people to God.
01:33:00
Do the elders do that? I believe there are elders who know that God, who searches their hearts, sees that from week to week and from month to month.
01:33:11
They never make a single attempt to do anything for the glory of Jesus Christ. Thirdly, men are entering the ministry without a call or a gift from God.
01:33:23
They go to college and they are educated for the church. They brought before the bishops or before the presbyteries without any fear of being struck dead for committing the blasphemy against the
01:33:35
Holy Spirit. They swear in my church, they state in years that they believe they're called by the
01:33:42
Holy Ghost to the ministry and they enter it out of a desire to promote the salvation of the souls of fellow creatures when they know what they say is a lie.
01:33:57
And so he went, oh, very, very solemnly to speak to unconverted ministry.
01:34:07
The day of judgment will come and if you know in your hearts that you are not yet converted and are not really laboring for souls, follow the advice that Peter gave to Simon Margus and confess your sins to God and pray for pardon and for the
01:34:22
Holy Spirit. And lastly, the very best among us is exceedingly guilty of neglecting the apostolic injunction to be instant in and out of season.
01:34:35
And that's the great challenge of us all, not to be one day
01:34:40
Christians or to be Christians leading a service for an hour on a
01:34:47
Sunday morning, but to be out and out, 24 -7, serving the
01:34:53
Lord faithfully. Can we all speak when we are expected to be faithful, out of season, when we're the only
01:35:06
Christian on the school bus, when we're the only Christian in our place of work, in the open palm of office?
01:35:14
Do we wisely and lovingly show in those places that we are the
01:35:21
Lords? And so it's not just the weakness of the pulpit, but the pulpit reflects the general weakness of men who don't know the
01:35:32
Lord, who don't know the assurance of sins forgiven through Him, and so are not living ever, only, all for Jesus Christ.
01:35:44
It's right to speak of the weakness of the pulpit, but we also then, when we point a finger at the pulpit, have to point a finger at us in the pew and say, we're not living and evangelizing as we should.
01:36:01
Amen. We are going to our final break right now. It's going to be a lot briefer than the last one, or a lot more brief.
01:36:09
So if you have a question and you want to have it read on the air and answered by Jeff Thomas, I would strongly urge you to email it to me immediately because we are rapidly running out of time.
01:36:20
That's chrisarnson at gmail .com, chrisarnson at gmail .com. Don't go away, God willing, we'll be right back with Jeff Thomas and more of Brendan O 'Rourke.

When Iron Sharpens Iron Radio first launched in 2005, the publishers of the
01:40:26
New American Standard Bible were among my very first sponsors. It gives me joy knowing that many scholars and pastors in the
01:40:35

James White of Alpha Omega Ministries and the Dividing Line webcast here. Although God has brought me all over the globe for many years to teach, preach, and debate at numerous venues, some of my very fondest memories are from those precious times of fellowship with Pastor Rich Jensen and the brethren at Hope Reformed Baptist Church, now located at their new beautiful facilities in Corham, Long Island, New York.
01:42:33
I've had the privilege of opening God's Word from their pulpit on many occasions, have led youth retreats for them, and have always been thrilled to see their members filling many seats at my
01:42:42
New York debates. I do not hesitate to highly recommend Hope Reformed Baptist Church of Corham, Long Island to anyone who wants to be accurately taught, discipled, and edified by the holy scriptures, and to be surrounded by truly loving and caring brothers and sisters in Christ.
01:42:57
I also want to congratulate Hope Reformed Baptist Church of Corham for the recent appointment of Pastor Rich Jensen's co -elder,

Pastor Christopher McDowell. For more information on Hope Reformed Baptist Church, go to hopereformedli .net,

Chris Sorensen, host of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio here. I want to tell you about a man I have personally known for many years.
01:43:42
His name is Dan Buttafuoco. Dan is a personal injury and medical malpractice lawyer, but not the type that typically comes to mind.
01:43:50
Dan cares about people and is a theologian himself. Recently he wrote a book titled
01:43:55
Consider the Evidence for the Bible. Ravi Zacharias wrote the foreword.
01:44:00
Dan also has a master's degree in theology. Dan handles serious injury and medical malpractice cases in all 50 states.
01:44:08
He represents many Christians in serious injury matters all over the country. Dan is an exceptional trial lawyer.
01:44:16
He wrote the test for the National Board of Trial Advocacy, and currently his firm has over 100 cases that have settled for one million dollars or more, and in approximately 10 different states.
01:44:29
In Illinois, his lawyers had the fourth largest settlement in the state's history. In New York, his case involving a paralyzed police officer made the front page of the law journal.
01:44:40
If you have a serious personal injury or medical malpractice claim in any state, I recommend that you call
01:44:47
Dan. Consultations are free. There is no fee unless you win. Dan Buttafuoco's number is 1 -800 -669 -4878.

01:46:21
That's liyfc .org. Listening to Christian radio can be a big gamble spiritually.
01:46:48
Even many of the major Christian networks that include excellent, biblically faithful teachers on their lineup, sadly often also include the worst of doctrinally dangerous heretics.
01:46:59
If you are a lover of the doctrines of grace, you need not fear listening 24 hours a day to firstloveradio .org.
01:47:07
They feature Christ -centered programming from Reformed pastors and teachers you can rely upon for theological soundness and biblical faithfulness, such as Dr.
01:47:17
W. R. Downing, Dr. Peter Masters, Pastor Joe Jackowitz, Pastor Robert Gifford, Al Martin, Edward Delcor, and more.
01:47:26
Firstloveradio .org also live -streams my Iron Sharpens Iron Radio program daily.
01:47:32
Please stick around on firstloveradio .org after Iron Sharpens Iron Radio is over to continue being blessed by the unwavering proclamation of the gospel of sovereign grace.
01:47:43
Spread the word about firstloveradio .org. Hi, I'm Buzz Taylor, frequent co -host with Chris Arnzen on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio.
01:48:07
I would like to introduce you to my good friends Todd and Patty Jennings at CBBBS, which stands for Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service.
01:48:15
Todd and Patty specialize in supplying Reformed and Puritan books and Bibles at discount prices that make them affordable to everyone.
01:48:23
Since 1987, the family -owned and operated book service has sought to bring you the best available
01:48:28
Christian books and Bibles at the best possible prices. Unlike other book sites, they make no effort to provide every book that is available because, frankly, much of what is being printed is not worth your time.
01:48:41
That means you can get to the good stuff faster. It also means that you don't have to worry about being assaulted by the pornographic, heretical, and otherwise faith -insulting material promoted by the secular book vendors.
01:48:54
Their website is CBBBS .com. Browse the pages at ease, shop at your leisure, and purchase with confidence as Todd and Patty work in service to you, the church, and to Christ.
01:49:07
That's Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service at CBBBS .com. That's CBBBS .com.
01:49:15
Let Todd and Patty know that you heard about them on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio. And you can also call
01:49:20
CBBBS .com Monday through Friday from 10 a .m. to 4 .30 p .m. Eastern Time at 800 -656 -0231.
01:49:27
800 -656 -0231. Always mention that you heard about them from Chris Arns and on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio.
01:49:33
We thank CBBBS .com for sending out all of our winners in our audience the books that they win through submitting questions for our guests on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio.
01:49:45
Just a quick note. I strongly urge you to kill two birds with one stone, if you could.
01:49:50
Help both of our book -related advertisers at the same time. Solid Ground Christian Books is a publisher.
01:49:58
CBBBS .com is a distributor. So, therefore, I strongly urge you to go to Solid -Ground -Books .com
01:50:05
first. Make a long list of all the books that you want to order that they publish.
01:50:10
Then go to CBBBS .com and order them there. This way you help both of our advertisers at the same time.
01:50:17
Please always mention Chris Arns and of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio. We are now back for the final segment of our interview with Jeff Thomas.
01:50:24
And before I have you continue with Brownlow North, if you could whet the appetite of our listeners who hopefully will tune in tomorrow to find out more about your book,
01:50:34
How Can I Please God and Everything, if you could give us a little teaser about that book. All right.
01:50:40
Okay. It's really based on what Paul says in 2
01:50:46
Corinthians 5. We're always confident knowing that while we're at home in the body, we're absent from the
01:50:53
Lord. We're confident, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the
01:50:59
Lord. So we labor that whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him or we do everything to please him, the
01:51:12
NIV. So, it's really developing that.
01:51:17
That's the goal that the apostle has. And I'm asking the question, how can we, what are the ways in which we can please
01:51:28
God in everything? And I'll tell you those tomorrow. God willing.
01:51:33
Great. Well, I hope that you all tune in tomorrow to hear a second interview with our dear friend
01:51:39
Jeff Thomas. Now I have a question from RJ in White Plains, New York, who asks, do you know who
01:51:46
Brownlow North's heroes in the faith were? Yes, he loved to sit and listen quietly in the meals, supper after the evening service, lunch, with those leaders of the
01:52:09
Free Church of Scotland, Chalmers and Bannerman, and especially
01:52:16
Rabbi Duncan, Cunningham, those men whose books have been reprinted and are widely respected these days.
01:52:29
Those are the men that he loved, like a little boy, listening and smiling and learning so much from them.
01:52:42
Bobby, before she asked me, was there any description of him preaching? And there is one, a newspaper reporter goes along to hear him and describes him.
01:52:55
His tie isn't done up very well, and he has an eyeglass dangling on his tightly buttoned coat.
01:53:02
But what impressed me was the tremendous energy and force in his preaching.
01:53:09
There is something contagious in a man who is terribly in earnest. He begins his service with a low and faltering voice, but before he's got halfway through the open prayer, his breath begins to heave with convulsions.
01:53:25
He weeps. His whole frame is agitated. Tears stream over his cheeks, and as I know, faltering, words come quickly.
01:53:36
All the grace of a natural orator are developed. He becomes a good example of the truth that there's no teacher of elocution like the heart, and he implores his audience with tears, forget about me, just listen to my message.
01:53:51
He sketches the position of men without God, picturing them from his own experience, but he never alludes to his past career.
01:54:02
And then with a radiant smile, he says, souls are being here, saved tonight.
01:54:08
And he asks for the prayers of the congregation on his own that I can go on in earnest serving and doing the works of the
01:54:19
Lord. And I love the end of the man. He's only 63, and he's weary now with all the work that he has done.
01:54:30
He's tired. The man in the room next door hears the thud as he faints and falls to the ground.
01:54:41
They help him into bed. His wife hurriedly comes there, and for 10 days, she never leaves him.
01:54:49
During those 10 days, he speaks to the people around the bed. He says, I used to have a great terror of death.
01:54:57
That's gone from me. I have no fear right now. I am resting in Christ.
01:55:03
I would not change places with you for the whole world. And what is the verse that you are leading this world on?
01:55:12
Ah, the blood of Jesus Christ, his son, cleanseth us from all sin.
01:55:18
That's a verse on which I am dying. One wants no more. Have you peace?
01:55:26
Perfect peace, he says. And the next day he died, and they sang the paraphrase, how bright those glorious spirits shine, whence all their white array.
01:55:37
How came they to the blissful seats of everlasting day? In the blood of Christ, he washed their robes.
01:55:45
And so friends prayed, read scripture. He was laid in the tomb, and the tombstone reads,
01:55:53
Brownlow North, only son of Charles Augustus North, born
01:55:58
January 6, 1810, died November 9, 1873.
01:56:04
At the age of 44, he was turned from an ungodly life to serve the Lord. Thereafter, he preached the gospel with singular power and was greatly honored in winning souls to Jesus by the testimony of the love and respect of his many friends.
01:56:24
And you can see that in Edinburgh today, in the Dean Cemetery. It's well cared for, the stone which marks where he, according to the flesh, lies, from which he will rise when the spirit comes with Jesus and all his angels and joins spirit and body of all believers together in that great day.
01:56:50
Praise God. Wow. What a great way to conclude this interview. I am certainly looking forward to our interview tomorrow, and I want to remind our listeners, if you are a man in ministry leadership, please join me this
01:57:07
December 19th and 20th in New York City to hear Jeff Thomas preach.
01:57:12
And if you've never heard Jeff Thomas preach, you have got to make every effort to go hear him preach.
01:57:18
Of course, you can listen on Sermon Audio and other places, but there's nothing like being present physically when somebody is preaching the gospel, especially a gifted minister, an ambassador for Christ like Jeff Thomas.
01:57:30
And of course, Stephen J. Lawson will be there at the Foundations Conference, and Paul Washer and Rev.
01:57:36
Armin Tomasian and Richard Colwell Jr. and Andrew Quigley. That website to register is thefoundationsconference .com,
01:57:49
thefoundationsconference .com. And also, please don't forget that for those of you who did not win a copy of Brownlow North, the all -around evangelist, you can find out more about this book at heritagebooks .org,
01:58:04
heritagebooks .org. But I'm asking, actually, that when we interview authors, that you get them, because this does not hurt
01:58:11
Heritage Books, get them through our sponsors, CVBBS .com, Carmelin Valley Bible Book Service, CVBBS .com,
01:58:19
because obviously they have to purchase these books from heritagebooks .org, and so both will benefit.
01:58:26
And so that's CVBBS .com, CVBBS .com, Carmelin Valley Bible Book Service.
01:58:32
And I was wondering, Brother Thomas, do you have any contact information that you want to share with our listeners, or should they go through the
01:58:42
Reformation Heritage Books website to get in contact with you? I'd just like you to choose that on your own as to how our listeners can follow up with you.
01:58:54
I'm not sure how to answer that question. Well, I'll just leave it at heritagebooks .org,
01:59:00
heritagebooks .org. And of course, we can't forget about the Banner of Truth.
01:59:07
And the Banner of Truth you can find out also, banneroftruth .org, banneroftruth .org.
01:59:13
You can find out more information about Jeff Thomas. And Brother, I am so excited about interviewing you two days in a row.
01:59:21
I'm looking forward to our conversation tomorrow on how can I please God in everything. Thank you so much for being my guest today and tomorrow.
01:59:28
And I want to thank everybody who listened today, especially those who took the time to write in questions. And I want you all to always remember for the rest of your lives that Jesus Christ is a far greater
01:59:39
Savior than you are a sinner. God bless you, and we look forward to hearing from you with your questions tomorrow on Iron Trump and Zion Radio.
01:59:50
Very good. Thank you very much for entertaining me and encouraging me so much.
