00:08: You will at this time Open your Bibles to the gospel of John This is our 33rd message in this gospel the gospel of John chapter 6
00:23: We will for the second time consider verses 26 to 40 gospel
00:29: John chapter 6 40
00:42: Oh God Please Lord and the beloved and precious name of Jesus the
00:57: Christ Use what I have prepared
01:03: So that we may feast on your word Lord if you do not through your spirit
01:12: Speak to your people through me We this day will start please
01:25: I Want to begin reading with the reading of the text
01:35: The gospel of John chapter 6 26 through 40 Jesus answered them and said
01:45: Before I continue to read remember. This is the group of Jews who are following Jesus after the feeding of the multitude
01:55: Truly truly I Say to you you seek me not because you saw signs
02:03: Because you ate of the loaves and were filled Do not work for the food which perishes before the food which
02:13: Endures to eternal life which the Son of Man will give to you for on him the
02:20: Father God set his seal Therefore they said to him what should we do so that we may work the works of God?
02:31: Jesus answered and said to him. This is the work of God that you believe in him who he has sent
02:39: So they said to him what then do you do for a sign So that we may see and believe you
02:50: What work do you perform and I remind you again? This is the group of Jews They just took an aside
03:01: Our father a our father's ate the manna in the wilderness as it is written
03:07: He gave them bread from heaven to eat Jesus said to them truly truly
03:14: I say to you Moses has not given you the bread from heaven, but my father gives you the true bread from heaven
03:25: For the bread of heaven is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world
03:35: And they said to him Lord always Give us this bread
03:41: Jesus said to them I am The bread of life he who comes to me will never hunger and he who believes in me will never thirst
03:52: But I say to you that you have seen me and yet you do not believe
04:01: All that the father gives me will come to me and the one who comes to me.
04:07: I will never cast out For I have come down from heaven
04:13: Not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me Now this is the will of him who sent me that of all that he has given to me.
04:23: I lose nothing But raise it up on the last day For this is the will of my father that everyone who sees the son and believes in him
04:36: Will have eternal life And I myself will raise him up on the last day
04:49: Our theme for this chapter has been the reality of false disciples
04:55: Right, we get a good parallel of what a true disciple is Speaking of I would say the 11 not the 12 the 11 and what a false disciples are those who ate who saw and partook in the sign who crossed the
05:11: Sea looking for Jesus not to be taught by Jesus not to truly learn from him, but to be fed
05:20: Jesus was their cash cow And my proposition is this those who believe in Jesus will never perish
05:32: For a Christian to perish God would have not entered creation Jesus would not be the
05:39: Christ and the Christ would not be on the throne One Christian perishes this has to be true
05:50: God would have not entered creation. Jesus would not be the Christ and Christ would have not would not be on the throne
06:00: Now this is an issue that Christians have misunderstood thought about wrote about and divided over Right.
06:08: We know this is true There's one thing in church history that took place in the 1600s 15 and 1600s it's this issue
06:25: Now this is a subject that if I was to claim to know or if you were to claim to know or if someone was to claim to know and understand completely
06:36: They will be completely fooling themselves I do not stand up here telling you that I completely understand this because I do not we are simultaneously
06:47: Saints positionally righteous before God and also sinners
06:54: Right, I mean If you think that I'm standing up here without sin you are wrong
07:01: You have too high of a standard for me Too high of a standard
07:07: I mess up If you want a second My wife will be you want a third you can ask my children
07:18: You want to come into the conversation hang out with me for a week. I mess up But my sin
07:26: Does not separate me from Christ. It does not eliminate the reality that I am a saint positionally righteous before God This is a subject that brings other theological questions into discussion like the sovereignty of God Which we'll get into a little bit
07:54: The question is this can a Christian lose his or her salvation Can someone be a
08:02: Christian one day? Have eternal life and the next day not a
08:07: Christian no longer having eternal life Again, many
08:13: Christians say you can't while others including myself Say that you cannot
08:21: I believe the Bible teaches that That someone who is a
08:28: Christian they are always a Christian if someone is a Christian they are always a
08:34: Christian Again, though I do not pretend To understand everything about it
08:41: What I can tell you is this Is that the Bible says that the saved are in Christ?
08:52: If you this day have experienced salvation You are right now and already not yet in Christ fully completely and Those who are in Christ cannot be on in Christ and Also can tell you
09:15: I'm sure Every one of us can If you're old enough has stories where someone served in a church professed faith as a
09:28: Christian and has fallen away What do we do with that I Would say that they're
09:35: Christian and name -only They professed faith but never possessed faith
09:43: They professed faith for whatever reason But they have not possessed faith
09:52: And as a minister of the gospel I will also Be a fool to think that everyone that I meet or everyone that becomes a member of this church
10:05: Though they profess faith possess faith That's why
10:14: I have a minister at the very end of our Sermon or there we've been here from the beginning together, and it's just me and you here that day
10:22: I am going to call the hearers to faith and repentance Because I just don't know
10:33: I am to always call Myself To you who come here who sit under the word at Covenant Reformed Baptist Church As all of us have seen people in Christian in name
10:55: Christian in name In our outline we're going to follow the pattern laid out in the paragraph concerning the word work
11:06: The work which they perform the work which They want to perform the work which
11:15: All are called to perform the work which
11:20: God perform The work which they cannot perform the work which
11:26: God must perform and The work which
11:31: Jesus must perform now when I laid those seven
11:37: Points out. I was thinking I could get them all done in one week. I got to point number four and realized
11:48: My wife didn't have much faith in me and I don't blame her when I told her I was going to do that So we're going to pick back up in point number four today
11:55: And last week we looked at points one through four this week we'll pick back up in our fourth point
12:00: So the fourth point the work which God must the work which
12:07: God Excuse me, the work which God poor perform past tense We'll pick up in verse 35 35
12:18: Verse 35 Jesus said to them
12:26: I am the bread of life He who comes to me will never hunger and he who believes in me will never thirst
12:42: So again, this is we exegetically walked through this verse last week
12:49: And I'll take away from it was Jesus in this I am statement.
12:55: I am the bread of life It's clearly made claims of the right.
13:01: This is pointing us back to Exodus chapter 3 verse 14 where God speaking to Moses in the burning bush says
13:13: I am who I am and You take the
13:19: Greek Septuagint of that portion of Scripture. He says a go.
13:25: I mean And here Jesus says I am a go
13:30: I mean and I pointed out that a go can mean I And our text is translated a go as I in me.
13:39: I mean and you'll say is am But that both of them actually say
13:45: I am So a go is I am I Mean is
13:51: I am So Jesus here when he uses that word a go
13:58: I mean He's saying I am I am I am
14:04: I Am which points us back to? Exodus Clearly Jesus is pointing out his divinity
14:14: God alone gives life God alone forgives sins and we see as we read these
14:22: Gospels that Jesus gives life Jesus forgives sins Jesus is doing things that only God could be Jesus is raising the dead only
14:29: God Jesus is doing things that only God can do
14:35: Clearly here in this statement. He is saying that he is
14:40: God and that he Is the bread of life
14:49: The work which God must perform Was sending the bread of life which came down from heaven in Exodus The Jews wandering through the wilderness
15:05: Moses did not make it rain manna God made it rain manna. We saw the reason why was to see if they would be obedient They were to gather the bread for six days and on the sixth day they were to gather a double portion
15:23: To see if they would be obedient But also so they would know that Yahweh had brought them out of the land of Egypt And right now
15:33: God has sent the true bread of heaven speaking of in our text
15:42: He's calling them to repentance Obedience Change the way you think
15:51: And we clearly see that what's taking place here is the second Exodus The true
15:57: Exodus what that Exodus in the book of Exodus was pointing to something greater
16:02: Is coming a greater Exodus is coming and it's not just for the Jews, but it's for all those who believe
16:12: Jesus makes the claim that whoever Whoever comes to him will listen never hunger
16:22: And I don't pretend to know everything that means And whoever believes in him will never thirst again,
16:32: I don't pretend to know what that means right now I'm Thirsty right mom as I'm speaking.
16:40: I So Obviously, it's not talking about the physical need that we have for for being hungry and being thirsty But that's either true or it isn't
16:58: There is no middle ground when it comes to Jesus and what he says
17:06: Believing in Jesus means putting one's trust in and committing oneself to Grip work the steward
17:16: Coming to Jesus is believing in Jesus coming to Jesus means leaving your own self behind Coming to Jesus means no turning back
17:29: Jesus said no one after putting his hand to the plow and looking back is fit
17:36: For the kingdom of God again quoting from Lawson Steve Lawson what bread is to the body
17:43: Jesus is to the soul In the same way that our our bodies hunger and thirst for bread and water
17:52: Jesus is that for our soul Believing in Jesus and never hungering and coming to Jesus and never thirsting has to do
18:08: With Jesus satisfying us as only he can do Listen if something else can satisfy you besides Jesus Let's believe you're
18:19: Christian in name only Name oh There's been so many testimonies
18:27: I've listened to from from whether it be a rockstar a rap star or just someone who
18:34: Hit rock -bottom in life And found out that Jesus was the rock on the bottom
18:40: Right. They had all these these these great adventures trying their best to to take whatever that they can find in right whether it be money sex drugs
18:53: Whatever it is that they thought could satisfy them. They took it in and still found themselves wanting they were
19:00: Satisfying the flesh and realized that it was there was a continual need they could not actually satisfy their body
19:08: Just like your stomach can never fully be satisfied. Right you eat one day.
19:13: Maybe you eat three times a day May and the next day guess what you're hungry
19:20: You can never be satisfied That's how it is with the world system no matter how much money you have no matter how much sex or how much drugs
19:28: It's never enough and you will never be satisfied. I hear these testimonies from ex rock stars drug addicts
19:37: Who have come to Christ and who have spoken about this? They never truly felt satisfied in all of their money and all of their longing until They came to Christ.
19:52: I Believe Humanity since the fall Has in it a wanting to be made whole
20:02: That being made whole may not be the the right hope that they're wanting to be made right
20:07: That's why all of humanity are searching for this This life of a rock star this
20:17: Those who can't do it find themselves in the life of a junkie like myself prior to Christ All right living a life in the streets
20:29: Making money the best way that I knew how which was not a good way at all And trying to fulfill my desires by the lust of the flesh the lust of the eyes and the pride of life
20:40: And I found myself in terrible ones. I can never be satisfied
20:47: Because I believe humanity has in it since the fall a wanting to be made whole
20:56: And I'm not speaking about a god -shaped hoe in your heart I'm speaking about the broken image of God, which is the image of Adam ever since the fall
21:07: The image of God Adam was created Has been broken It has been broken
21:15: And I believe that all of us even though we don't even know it long to be made Whole and the only way to be made whole is that image of God coming upon us and that's only done through Christ All of mankind is searching for something and Evangelism is telling them that Jesus is that something they're searching for it
21:38: They're they're hungry for they cannot be satisfied And only
21:44: Jesus can satisfy If you will turn with me to the book of Isaiah chapter 55
22:05: Look at verse 1 everyone who thirst
22:12: Come to the waters Said that again everyone who thirst
22:21: Come to the waters and you who have no money come buy and eat
22:30: Come buy wine and milk come without money without costs
22:38: Why do you spend money for what is not bread and your wages
22:47: For what does not satisfy Listen carefully to me
22:54: And eat what is good and delight your soul and its enriches richness
23:02: Incline your ear and come to me listen that your soul may live and I will cut an
23:14: Everlasting covenant with you according to the faithful loving kindness of David Ladies and gentlemen that covenant was cut on Calvary's cross
23:33: And because it was cut on Calvary's cross the invitation is
23:38: Come and buy without money. Oh You hunger you thirst
23:47: Come and buy without money It's the free offer of the gospel
23:55: Come and buy without money and it's through that cut covenant
24:07: That you and I and all who are hungry and thirst for righteousness
24:14: Find reconciliation Reconciliation is only Through what
24:20: Jesus Christ has done for us point number five The work which they can not perform
24:32: This will be taken from verse 36 of John's gospel chapter 6 verse 36
24:43: But I say to you that you have seen me and yet you do not believe
24:51: And This group of Jews Jesus just fed them.
24:56: They can visually see them see him and they do not believe
25:03: We can sometimes think or wonder to ourselves why our family our friends and our neighbors don't believe
25:11: You ever wonder that why is it my family? my friends and my neighbors
25:16: Don't believe why is it that I believe? But they don't believe Why is it that the name of Jesus can make nice people angry and cause your family not to invite you to the get -togethers?
25:30: All right, amen Why is that The first thing we need to understand is for the most part family friends and Neighbors of Jesus who saw him.
25:44: I didn't believe I didn't believe his brothers didn't believe until after his resurrection.
25:50: They didn't believe How much more someone nearly 2 ,000 years
25:58: Who hasn't seen him? Those who saw him didn't believe This group of Jews saw him take a sack lunch and feed upwards to 20 to 25 ,000 people and they needed another sign
26:11: They didn't believe How much more? Speaking to this group of Jews Jesus says to them you have seen me
26:27: The trust was not in Jesus and they were not committed to him meaning they wouldn't pursue it they didn't believe
26:38: They were with him They saw him partook in the greatest One of the greatest signs and all of Scripture and I say it's one of the greatest signs because it points to The gospel it points to the new covenant living
26:51: I Don't have time to go back and hash that out, but two or three or four messages ago.
26:57: I did that They didn't they didn't believe in Jesus their trust and commitment was in them selves
27:09: It was in the law of Moses Why should we expect why should
27:16: I expect why should you expect your friends your family or your neighbors to believe
27:22: To put their trust in and commit themselves to someone they can't even see
27:31: To be honest no one you or I no one and in of ourselves
27:36: Can cause ourselves to believe Because of the fall of Adam no one can just decide to believe
27:44: And come to Christ no one can decide to be a
27:49: Christian maybe in name only But not in Christ The work which they cannot perform as well as you and I cannot perform is to believe
28:10: The work which they cannot perform is belief Now as we transition verse 37 gives us our only hope for people believe it
28:21: As a matter of fact, it gives us the answer as to why you and I believe and others don't
28:31: Point number six the work which God must perform Look at verse 37
28:41: Verse 37 all that the father gives me
28:47: Will come to me and the one who comes to me.
28:52: I will never cast out Coming to Jesus is
28:58: Contingent upon the father giving us to the son Repeat coming to Jesus is contingent upon the father giving us to the son
29:10: If you have not been given to him you are not coming to him Now So that we don't think we're special don't think of us being given to the son as Gifts to the son from the father
29:28: Right. My salvation is not a gift to him But instead
29:37: What would but should come to mind is the doctrine of unconditional election
29:43: Unconditional election says that God chose in eternity past those who would be saved
29:48: Listen by his grace and the sending of his son by his grace and the sending and the sending of his
29:59: Son his choosing is Unconditional and those whom he chose will come to faith in Christ the word here all
30:10: So the word all here does not mean everyone who has ever lived
30:16: But instead the word all is in reference to those who were given again verse 37 a all
30:23: That the father gives me will come to me You know how
30:29: I know that the all here is not everyone who has ever lived verse 36 but I say to you that you have seen me and yet you do not believe all that the father
30:41: Gives me will come to me You're speaking to a group of Jews probably and upwards to 20 ,000 people who have followed after him because he's their cash cow
30:54: And he's letting another you're not a part of this all All is not does not always mean all of everyone who has ever lived
31:06: Everyone that was given to Christ By the father will come to him the covenant the covenant of redemption gives to us a way to understand
31:20: Unconditional election now part of me say this before God the father's the covenant of redemption God the father purpose
31:26: God the Son accomplishes the purpose God the Holy Spirit applies the purpose now Here's the here's the key
31:33: The purpose is to save God's purpose is to save a people not all people a people
31:44: God the Father purpose to save a People the people whom
31:50: God the Father purpose to save were the people who he chose to be saved
31:57: And eternity passed He chose a people to be saved meaning he purposed to save them so all that the father chose
32:10: Gives to the son and those whom the father gives to the son
32:19: Comes They come Coming to Jesus again is believing in Jesus coming to Jesus means leaving yourself behind Coming to Jesus means no
32:34: Turning back This is the warning that we're given throughout scripture talks about the warnings here the warnings are to believe in Jesus The warnings are leaving yourself
32:47: The warnings are not turning back through belief. This is what it gives to you and those who come to Jesus Jesus will never pass out meaning if you are in Christ, you cannot be in Christ Jesus is not going to remove you from himself
33:10: All right, I started out saying that I don't understand how it is that I am simultaneously a saint and a sinner
33:18: Positionally righteous before God and yet if you know me, you know that I still
33:24: Sin like everyone else does there's nothing special about me. All right when
33:29: I Break God's law in a simple way. Jesus is not grabbing me and removing him from removing myself from him
33:38: I'm in Christ right now in Christ sitting with him in the heavens
33:44: In a way that I don't understand completely He is not removing myself from him every time
33:51: I sin and every time I repent putting me back in himself That's not how this works
34:01: Hopefully I can tie it all in a bow right here point number seven the work which
34:07: Jesus must perform Verses 38 through 40
34:20: Jesus still speaking for I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of Him who sent me
34:30: Now this is the will of him who sent me That of all that he has given to me
34:39: I lose nothing but raise it up on the last day For this was the will of my father that everyone who sees the
34:51: Son and believes in him Will have eternal life and I myself will raise him up on the last day the work which
35:03: Jesus must perform Listen is the will of the father and by will
35:12: I need you to think purpose Purpose The purpose of the father
35:18: God the Father purposed to save a people Doesn't covenant theologists make everything make sense
35:35: The work of Jesus The work which Jesus must perform
35:41: Is to accomplish the purpose? It's to accomplish the purpose He does that by keeping the covenant of works
35:55: And by all so I'm only pronouncing an all statement and by all
36:01: I mean everyone Who has ever?
36:08: Everyone who has lived after Adam Has fallen in Adam all of us have falling in Adam Again, and by all
36:18: I mean everyone who has ever lived after Adam Some of us will be saved and by some
36:28: I mean Those whom the father chose and purpose to say by giving them to the son all are saved and Kept safe So my all who are saved
36:46: Same all that Jesus is speaking about. It's the Sun the sum of humanity
36:53: Some of us are going to be saying because we were given to him by the
36:59: Jesus kept the covenant Listen by keeping the law and by doing so he earned
37:06: Righteousness For everyone who believes so again right now. I am both saint and sinner positionally righteous before God Because Jesus earned righteousness for me and his keeping the covenant keeping the law my believing in him
37:25: Which is a gift I? Can't perform it my believing in him.
37:30: I received righteousness Abraham believed God and was counted as righteous.
37:37: We believe God in this sense is this speaking about? The promise see
37:42: Jesus is that promise see we have righteousness We're believe again
37:49: It's the Greek word pastua which means to put their trust in and commit themselves to If you're here today, and you say that you believe what you're saying
38:00: Is that your trust is in Jesus Christ, and you are committed to him?
38:07: If that's not what your believe means guess what name only Christian in name only in name only
38:18: Is the belief given to us in Scripture? It's pastua, and it means to put your trust in and commit yourself to And who does that?
38:31: Everyone know all that the father has given to the son
38:37: Jesus came down from heaven to do the will of the father if listen if Jesus loses one disciple that means
38:48: That was given to him if Jesus loses one disciple that was given to him by the father that means
38:53: Jesus Failed in doing the father's will It means
38:59: Jesus did not accomplish the purpose Now to seal the deal on what it means for Jesus to accomplish the purpose not only was he to keep the covenant by keeping the law to earn
39:12: Righteousness for him for you and I but he was also to take the punishment for those
39:18: Whom the father gave him by dying in their place Which is where I get the saying he lived the life we could not live
39:28: He took our punishment in his death But also he was buried and he rose again on the third day
39:37: And just as Jesus was raised from the dead a part of what
39:42: Jesus Accomplishes in this purpose will be our raising again from the dead on the last day
39:52: I know right now. There is a lot of confusion Concerning the resurrection of the dead
39:59: Jesus makes it clear right here This is the will of my father verse 40 that everyone who sees the
40:08: Son and believes in him Will have eternal life and I myself
40:14: Will raise him up on the last day if he is just talking about those who see him physically
40:23: Something is majorly wrong. I Don't know what to do with it.
40:30: I don't know how to live it. I don't know how to teach it. I Cannot say that everyone
40:38: Who was born again? Like how do you tell someone who has received
40:46: Christ is born again is a new creation That this is not speaking about him.
40:51: He is not a part of the all He was not given to the father all that the father gives me will come
40:56: The all that he is speaking about that will come is the same people here in verse 40 where he says for this is the will of my father that everyone who sees the
41:06: Son and believes in Him will have eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day
41:13: Last day could not be 70 a .d. It could not be 70 a .d.
41:20: It is a day in our future So who is it that is raised on the last day all
41:28: That is given that the father gives to the son. Ladies and gentlemen, I was given to the father
41:33: I was given to the to the son by the father if you're in Christ You have been given to the son by the father and he will raise you up on The last day the
41:43: Greek word here for C. So if you notice it says Verse 40 for this is the will of my father that everyone who sees the
41:52: Son and believes in him will have eternal life The Greek word here for C is they are a They are a which means to literally or Figuratively experience
42:07: Necessarily gazing at could mean gazing at But it's literally or figuratively figuratively experience
42:20: Everyone who experiences Jesus and by that I'm thinking new birth, right?
42:25: What is the gospel of John speaking about the new birth? This book is is about being born again being given faith to believe
42:37: Everyone who experiences Jesus in this supernatural way of the new birth
42:43: Believes in Jesus and has eternal life There's no new purpose for believers after 78
42:56: God the Father purpose to save a people God the
43:01: Son Accomplishes the purpose by living the life We could not live and take in our punishment at that cross
43:09: At that cross with a wrath of God and the mercy of God meant God the Holy Spirit applies the purpose by the
43:17: Message of Christ and if you've been paying attention, you will know that I've only mentioned
43:22: Unconditional election by name we just walked through all of Calvinism Total depravity we have fallen in Adam and because we have taken
43:34: Adams curse, right? We were born in sin bent on sin searching for something to fill our lives besides God The only way that we can be saved if we have been unconditional elected
43:50: Right God in eternity past chooses who it is that is going to be saved and that Christ died to accomplish the purpose
44:01: Of those whom the Father gave to him And we are Irresistibly by irresistible grace.
44:08: We are saved through that message We hear that message if we are of the call if we have been given to Jesus guess what we do
44:16: We come all that the Father gives me will come to me And if we are in Christ he does not remove us every time we sin and put us back every time we repent
44:30: It's the perseverance of the Saints And guess what it's not you and your own power persevering in Christ That too is the grace of God in Christ And today
44:45: I Pray that you have heard that message There's nothing we can do to be saved ourselves
44:53: We are fully dependent upon God our salvation is contingent upon Us being given to the son by the father and that the son really did come into existence
45:04: That God entered into creation and he did what we could not do in Reconciling us to himself being our purpose propitiation being the payment for our doing
45:18: And last week in closing last week I asked two questions And I hope that as I was preaching
45:26: That I said it in such a way last week that it came to mind What was that or what was that?
45:32: He was talking about last week? Towards the end of the message when he was calling us to repentance
45:37: Why would he say those words if what I'm saying now is true? I Asked this if you have not come to Jesus, why not?
45:52: If you do not believe in Jesus and what do you believe in I asked those two questions because I knew it was coming next
46:03: The ordeal we cannot believe we cannot come unless the father gives us to him But I asked if you have not come
46:12: Why not give the reason? If you do not believe in Jesus, then what do you believe in?
46:21: when you die You did not choose me
46:26: God is not an excuse You did not choose me God is not an excuse
46:34: It's not As much as I believe the Bible teaches the sovereignty of God and salvation
46:40: It just as much teaches men responsibility to repent and believe
46:49: All men Everywhere are called to repentance and faith
46:56: All men everywhere are called to believe To repent to turn from sin and to come to Christ All men everywhere.
47:07: There is no excuse God. You did not choose me is not something that's going to come off of your lips
47:14: It's not an excuse by the good grace
47:21: By the by the grace of God If you're here today, you are in name only listen
47:30: The Holy Spirit is here to apply the purpose The Holy Spirit is here to apply the purpose
47:39: All men everywhere are called to repent and to believe And so the call is always repentance and faith no matter what the text says when it comes to the sovereignty of God We're planning our next conference around this whole idea of Calvinism And that's why
48:00: I didn't really dive too deep on verse 37 that's probably going to be my exposition
48:11: The Holy Spirit is here Do you believe that? The Holy Spirit is here
48:21: And the question is still the same if you do not come to Jesus why not give the reason
