You please turn in your Bibles to the book of Acts, the book of Acts, chapter 2.
00:16
In a few moments we're going to have some folks up here who have expressed a desire to follow the Lord in believers' baptism, and before being immersed in the water, they are going to give their testimony of faith in Christ.
00:27
That is the basis upon which we baptize people, a credible profession of faith in Jesus Christ.
00:34
And before we do that, I want to focus our hearts and our minds upon this passage of Scripture in Acts, chapter 2, beginning at verse 37.
00:41
This is going to show us by example the significance as well as the purpose of baptism.
00:48
This is going to be a familiar passage to many of you. The event that is described here at the
00:53
Pentecost, the birth of the church, is going to be well known to many of you, 3 ,000 people got saved that day.
00:59
So before we dive into the passage, let's ask the Lord's blessing upon our study. Our Father, we would ask that Your grace would be extended to us through the course of our study and our reflection, our meditation upon Your Word.
01:13
We pray that Your Spirit would teach us and instruct us and help us to see clearly and plainly the meaning and intention of the text so that we may honor
01:22
You through our obedience to it and our appreciation of what You have given to us in the ordinance of baptism.
01:28
We ask Your blessing upon this time and upon our study and upon our worship here together in Christ's name, amen.
01:36
Acts 2, beginning at verse 37, we're going to read through the end of verse 47. Now, when they had heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, brethren, what shall we do?
01:48
Peter said to them, repent and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the
01:55
Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, as many as the
02:01
Lord our God will call to Himself. With many other words, he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, be saved from this perverse generation.
02:12
So then, those who had received His Word were baptized and that day there were added about 3 ,000 souls.
02:18
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
02:25
Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles.
02:31
And those who had believed were together and had all things in common and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all as anyone might have need.
02:42
Day by day, continuing with one mind in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising
02:52
God and having favor with all the people and the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
03:00
This is obviously a larger passage than I would normally take here on a Sunday morning and while I might dive into more of the details in this passage, if we were going through this in a series from the book of Acts, today we're just going to observe some things, four of them particularly, about these people who are being baptized on the day of Pentecost.
03:20
We are going to note their conviction, their contrition, their confession, and then their consecration.
03:27
Their conviction, their contrition, their confession, and then their consecration. Now normally you would hear a good outline like that and you would think, he's not going to waste all of those on one
03:38
Sunday. He's going to stretch that out and that would be four sermons and it should be four sermons. But as much as it hurts my heart today,
03:44
I'm going to go through all of these in our time here together, just kind of briefly noticing these four things about these folks who were baptized on the day of Pentecost.
03:53
This is the day that the church was born and these four things that we observe about the candidates for baptism on that day tell us something about the function of baptism and the meaning of baptism in the early church.
04:07
So let's note first of all their conviction in verse 37. Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, brethren, what shall we do?
04:16
Now the very first question that presents itself to us in the text is this question, why were they pierced to the heart?
04:25
Now we are, when we begin at verse 37, we're sort of parachuting into the middle of this story and this series of events in Acts chapter 2.
04:34
They were pierced to the heart. The reason for that is explained in the context when we see what else is going on.
04:40
Now we obviously have to kind of jump in at verse 37, we're going to look at the response of the crowd, what happened that day, the baptism itself, what happened after the baptism.
04:48
But in order to do that, we need to allude back to the rest of the context for that day. This was the day of Pentecost and the story begins back at the beginning of chapter 2.
04:59
This was 50 days after the Passover or slash resurrection of Christ. It is 10 days after Christ's ascension and the disciples according to His command and His promise were waiting in the city of Jerusalem until the promise of the
05:15
Holy Spirit was given. Then the Spirit is poured out and the disciples who were there, the believers began to speak in tongues, that is not ecstatic babble that was not understood to anybody around them, but it was intelligent languages that they had never learned before.
05:32
They began to preach the gospel in the language of the people who had gathered in Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost in their own tongue, their own language, their own dialect so that the people who were there could understand the gospel.
05:45
And some of them mocked them and said, well, you're drunk. And Peter then of course responds and said, no, we're not drunk, it's nine o 'clock in the morning.
05:52
What you're seeing here is not the results of being filled with alcohol, what you're seeing here is the results of us being filled with the
05:58
Holy Spirit. They had a gift and an ability that the Spirit had given them to proclaim a message of repentance and judgment to the
06:04
Jews who were standing there so that having heard that gospel, they would respond to it. Peter and the apostles were simply doing what
06:11
Jesus had commanded them to do back in Matthew chapter 28 when he said, all authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth, go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the
06:21
Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you and lo, I am with you always even to the end of the age.
06:29
Now, without all of the details of everything that Peter gives them in his response to them beginning back in verse 18 and earlier, now getting into all the details of that, it is worth noting that the apostle
06:42
Peter quoted and explained three different Old Testament passages. First, he quotes from Joel chapter 2 verses 28 to 32.
06:50
You see that in verses 20 and 21, Joel 28 to 32 to show that the coming of the
06:56
Holy Spirit was something promised and predicted in the Old Testament. So what they were seeing that day was something that God had already promised to them through the prophet
07:06
Joel and Peter simply reminding them of that promise. What you're seeing here is not wine, it is the result of the
07:12
Spirit being poured out. Because the Spirit is being poured out, this is the birth of the church and he is now indwelling his people.
07:18
You're seeing a glimpse of the ultimate pouring out of the Spirit during this coming millennial kingdom.
07:23
What you're seeing here is the initial fulfillment of that promise from Joel. Then he began, you'll notice in verse 21 that he concludes his little explanation of Joel chapter 2 there with that phrase from Joel, and it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the
07:39
Lord will be saved. There's that promise there. And I think Peter intentionally quotes that because he wants to point the people to their need to be saved.
07:46
To be saved from what? Their own guilt. And so then the next thing that Peter does is he indicts them for their rejection and their crucifixion of the
07:54
Messiah. Look at verse 22. Men of Israel, listen to these words. Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which
08:05
God performed through him in your midst. Just as you yourselves know, this man delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put him to death.
08:17
But God raised him up again, putting an end to the agony of death since it was impossible for him to be held in its power.
08:25
And then Peter in verses 25 through 28 quotes from a second Old Testament passage,
08:31
Psalm 16, to show that the resurrection of the Messiah was also predicted and foreshadowed in the
08:37
Old Testament. So the resurrection which they had heard about because the garden tomb is only a short walk from where Peter is preaching this sermon, and of course everybody in Jerusalem knew that the body was gone, that the tomb was empty, that the
08:51
Roman soldiers were circulating this rumor that the body had been stolen by the disciples.
08:56
So the fact that the body is missing and nobody can produce that is the news of the day. And so now
09:02
Peter is indicting them for their own murder of the Messiah, then he points to the Old Testament and says the resurrection of that Messiah was predicted in the
09:10
Old Testament, Psalm 16. And then he quotes from a third passage from the Old Testament, Psalm 110, to explain that the ascension of the
09:18
Messiah, something that had happened 10 days prior, was also predicted in the Old Testament. His death, him being handed over by you, two criminals, and you put him to death, that was predetermined by God, foreshadowed in the
09:29
Old Testament, spoken of in the Old Testament, Isaiah 53. His resurrection, Psalm 16, his ascension to glory where he sits at the
09:36
Father's right hand and waits for that day when his enemies will be made a footstool for his feet, and then he will come back and he will judge them and punish them in judgment and victory.
09:45
That of course was predicted in the Old Testament as well, Psalm 110. So Peter is preaching from three separate
09:53
Old Testament texts to show that they had killed their Messiah according to the predetermined plan and purpose of God, that God had raised him from the dead and brought him, ascended him to the
10:03
Father's right hand where he sits until he will fulfill all of the promises that he has made to the nation of Israel and to the
10:09
Jewish nation. So even though Peter is saying the crucifixion of your
10:15
Messiah was predetermined and foreknown by God, he says to this crowd gathered there, you bear the blame for it.
10:23
You crucified him. You put him to death at the hands of wicked men. He is indicting them for their murder of the
10:31
Messiah and they were convicted over that, confronted with their sin. They felt the weight of their guilt and their transgressions and their sin before God, understanding now that the one whom they had crucified had been raised from the dead and was ascended to the
10:46
Father's right hand and that he is coming again in judgment. The people now are made to see and understand their own guilt, their own moral culpability, and the judgment that is to come upon them for their sin of rejecting their
10:58
Messiah and crucifying him. Peter did not stand up and promise them their best life now, health and wealth and prosperity or better living or anything else like that.
11:07
Instead, he got up there and he presented the most unpopular message possible. You're guilty of killing your
11:13
Christ and he's coming again. And guess who is in his crosshairs?
11:20
You if you will not repent and trust him. That was the message. Now notice their contrition, verse 37, now when they had heard this, they were pierced to the heart, said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, and here's their contrition, brethren, what shall we do?
11:33
They are moved to action. They understand their guilt. They see it. Holy God, I am a guilty sinner.
11:39
And now they are seeking a remedy for that condition. They want to be made right or to make something right.
11:46
They're not suppressing their conviction and their guilt, just ignoring it and moving on and saying, well, I'll deal with this at some other time.
11:53
I'll find a way of dealing with my guilt. I'll find a way of clearing my conscience. I'll make it right in some other way.
11:58
I'll go do something to pay off my moral crimes. They have been convicted over their sin, and now they're expressing their contrition and their willingness, their readiness to be made right or to make right what it is that they have done.
12:10
They want a solution for their guilt problem. And listen, every believer who has trusted in Jesus Christ has come to this point in the equation.
12:19
At some point, if you are a believer in Christ, at some point, you have come to understand your own moral culpability before a holy
12:26
God, that you have transgressed His law, that you have told lies, and Scripture says, thou shalt not lie.
12:33
And so therefore, you're guilty of breaking that commandment, that you have lost it in your heart, that you have dishonored your parents, that you have stolen things, that you've taken the name of God in vain, that you have not worshiped and served
12:42
God and God alone every moment of your life for your entire life. And therefore, you have keeped up a weight of guilt before a holy
12:50
God who sits enthroned in heaven and will have His way with sinners on the last day.
12:55
You have come to that place. You have come to understand, I am guilty, I deserve justice,
13:01
I need mercy and grace. I deserve justice, but I need mercy and grace.
13:07
And if I don't get mercy and grace, and instead I get justice, I will be undone. I will perish everlastingly.
13:14
I need God to extend grace to me and mercy to me, and I need to have all of my sins taken out of the way, my guilt removed, my transgressions forgiven.
13:23
I need to be made righteous and right, and I need to be made clean from my sin.
13:29
So when I can stand in the courtroom of God's justice, I will not hear guilty sinner condemned, depart from me, you worker of iniquity, into the eternal fires prepared for the devil and his angels.
13:40
I don't want to hear that. And I will hear that if I am not made right in a right standing with God. So how does that take place?
13:47
Well, Peter has already explained to them, by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified the
13:52
Messiah. He died as a sacrifice for sin. And then in fulfillment to Scripture, according to Psalm 16, he rose again victorious over death so that now death has been taken out of the way, and he has been exalted to the right hand of the
14:05
Father. And that is the place from which he will grant faith and repentance to any and all who believe upon him.
14:10
So if you want to be made right with that God and have that sin debt taken away, you must have a payment for your sin.
14:18
You can either stand in God's presence and bear the full weight of his wrath against you for your every transgression, or you can trust in one who stood in your place and bore that wrath in your place and rose again offering a full and favorable sacrifice to the
14:36
Father on behalf of any and all who will trust in him. And so now, of course, the only question is, what must
14:41
I do to be saved? That's what the men are asking. What must we do? I wonder if there's a little bit of remorse also in their question.
14:53
You've crucified the Messiah, he rose again, and he has ascended to the Father's right hand. And every Jew there would have been thinking to himself, then what shall we do?
15:02
We've already gone too far. We can't undo that and bring him back and embrace him and accept him.
15:11
Well, Peter offers to them a solution, something to do that would in essence be embracing him and turning from their sin.
15:18
This is their confession, verse 38 through 41. Peter said to them, "'Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the
15:27
Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the
15:34
Lord our God will call to himself.' And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "'Be saved from this perverse generation.'
15:42
So then those who had received his word were baptized, and that day there were added about three thousand souls."
15:47
Now, there are, if you're familiar with this passage, there are two interpretive issues that we have to address, and I would love to be able to give an entire sermon to each one of these two interpretive issues, but I'm just going to give you a brief explanation of what the issues are, and then
16:02
I think what Scripture teaches concerning them. The first is that verse 39 seems to suggest that infants should be baptized.
16:09
This promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, and as many as the
16:14
Lord our God will call to himself. Why does Peter mention children in there in connection with the promise?
16:21
The second question that needs to be explained is Peter seems to suggest that baptism is necessary for salvation.
16:28
Repent and be baptized in order that you may receive the forgiveness of sins. So, of course, that raises the question, can one receive the forgiveness of sins without baptism?
16:37
It seems to suggest that Peter is commanding and ordaining not only that infants be baptized, that children be baptized, but also that baptism is necessary for one to receive the forgiveness of sins.
16:49
I'll deal quickly with each one of those. And listen, if you're here normally, then you know how much I want to stop and just camp on each one of these, because there's no way of doing justice to this in just the few minutes that I have.
17:01
But, if I didn't say anything about it, then people here who believe in infant baptism would say, see, the coward didn't say anything about it.
17:09
And so he just wants to skip over that because he's too afraid to deal with the passage. And people who think that you need to be baptized to be saved would say, see, the coward just skipped over that because he doesn't want to deal with the passage that teaches that you need to be baptized to be saved.
17:21
So I'm not a coward. I'm going to deal with it, but not as deeply as we might hope. First, let's talk about infant baptism.
17:28
Let's ask three questions of our text, and here are the three questions. Number one, what is the promise that is spoken of?
17:35
He says in verse 39, for the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the
17:41
Lord our God will call to Himself. What is the promise that is being spoken of? Now, paedobaptists, infant baptizers, listen, infant baptism, paedobaptism is not a heresy.
17:50
Not a heresy. I think it can lead to a heresy if you think that in the waters of baptism, the infant is saved and eternally secure.
17:57
That I think is baptismal regeneration. That can be a heretical position. But infant baptism itself is not a heresy.
18:03
So the paedobaptist would say that the promise is the same promise that was given to Abraham and to his descendants back in Genesis 17 when the ordinance of circumcision was given to Abraham.
18:13
He said, this sign is for you and for your children, meaning that Abraham and all of his children were to be circumcised.
18:19
And so the paedobaptist would say, here he's referring to now a new covenant promise that is baptism, which has replaced circumcision.
18:26
And therefore, since we circumcised babies in the Old Testament, we should circumcise, sorry, baptize babies in the
18:32
New Testament. The baptism now has replaced this because that's the promise that is intended here.
18:38
And I would just simply say to that, that that is nowhere in the context. Peter is not at all dealing with the subject of the relationship between the new covenant and the old covenant or the continuation of the promise to Abraham.
18:48
That is not in Peter's view here. It's not what he's describing. In answer to the question, what is the promise being spoken of here?
18:55
The promise being spoken of is the Holy Spirit. Now all the way through this context,
19:01
Peter has been talking about the Holy Spirit. Remember, that was the issue that was raised at the very beginning. You're drunk. Peter says, no, it's the
19:06
Holy Spirit poured out on us in fulfillment of Joel 2. So in Acts 2, verse 17, look at it.
19:14
He says, I will pour forth my spirit on all mankind. And by quoting the book of Joel, Peter is saying, this is what was promised by the
19:20
Father back by the prophets. Acts 2, verse 33, having received from the Father, what?
19:26
The promise of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2, verse 38, and you will receive the gift of the
19:31
Holy Spirit. In Luke 24, also written by Luke who wrote
19:36
Acts, in Luke 24, Jesus said, and behold, I am sending forth the promise of my Father upon you, but you're to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.
19:44
Jesus there calls the Holy Spirit the promise of my Father. In Acts 1, gathering them together,
19:50
He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised. So now when
19:55
Peter says, this promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off and any whom the
20:01
Lord God will call to Himself, what promise is he talking about? An ordinance that is given specifically to one's children or infants?
20:11
Or is the promise the Holy Spirit whom Luke has already called the promise many times in the context?
20:16
The promise is the Holy Spirit Himself. Now, second, who are the recipients of this promise?
20:22
Look at Acts 2, verse 39 again, the promise is for you and for your children, for all who are far off, as many as the
20:28
Lord our God will call to Himself. So Peter is saying, these are the people who receive this promise, the
20:33
Holy Spirit. They are for you, that is my immediate hearers on this day, for your descendants who come after you, for any who are far off, that's how many people?
20:47
That's basically everybody. But Peter doesn't mean not only everybody here and everybody's children, but everybody who might not be here and is far off forever, but Peter specifically restricts the promise specifically to as many as the
21:01
Lord our God will call to Himself. So who are the recipients of baptism?
21:07
Those whom the Lord our God calls to Himself. How do I know if the Lord our God has called somebody to Himself?
21:14
The fact that they are born in a Christian home or the fact that they turn from their sin, believe savingly upon Jesus Christ, trust in Him, and confess their faith in Him.
21:24
That's how I know that one, at least that is a pretty solid indication that that is one who is called upon the
21:30
Lord God. In other words, the electing, repenting, and work of faith is the evidence that God has called somebody to Himself.
21:37
Those are the ones who were baptized. That's the ones to whom the promise is made. So the promise is not given to all children without exception any more than it was given to all of Peter's hearers without exception or to all who are far off without exception.
21:53
It was for any, in any of those groups whom the Lord God would call to Himself. Third question, who was baptized that day?
22:02
Look at verse 41. So then, those who received the word were baptized, and that day there were added about 3 ,000 souls.
22:09
Who do we baptize? Those who receive the word. Not those who receive the word and their children, but those who receive the word.
22:17
The one who has heard the word, understood the word, responded to the word, the one in whom the word has created faith and granted repentance and been brought to salvation, those are the candidates for baptism.
22:30
So only believers were baptized in the New Testament. That is the New Testament pattern and the
22:35
New Testament teaching. Second, is baptism necessary for salvation? Matt Waymeyer in his book,
22:43
A Biblical Critique of Infant Baptism, which is worth its weight in gold, says this, this verse, and I commend the book to you because he deals with this issue of whether baptism is necessary for salvation.
22:52
He deals with the issues that are raised in verse 39. Here's what he writes, quote, this verse is difficult to interpret because it seems to indicate that water baptism is a prerequisite for the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the
23:04
Holy Spirit, since the Bible clearly teaches that man is saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, how can
23:12
Peter imply that baptism is a condition for salvation? Close quote. We affirm that man is saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, so how is it that Peter can say you need to repent and be baptized in order to have the forgiveness of sins?
23:26
How do we resolve this? There are three ways, typically, three possible answers to this dilemma.
23:32
The first is to say that the phrase, for the forgiveness of sins, in verse 39, is it verse 39 or verse 38?
23:40
Verse 38. The first is to say that the phrase, for the forgiveness of sins, can be translated because of the forgiveness of sins.
23:47
In other words, you repent and then be baptized because your sins are forgiven. That's the first way that that is resolved.
23:53
That means that basically their baptism was an expression of their confidence in the reality that their sins had been forgiven.
24:02
Now that is a possible interpretation of that phrase. I don't think that it is the likely interpretation of that phrase.
24:09
According to Wehmeyer, there are only three verses in all of the New Testament where the word for can be translated in that way and possibly mean that, and all three of them are contentious.
24:16
In other words, it's not clear in any of those three. So that is not my preferred interpretation of the passage. The second possibility is that for the forgiveness of sins modifies the verb repent and not the word be baptized.
24:29
In other words, that it should be translated repent for the forgiveness of sins and be baptized, period.
24:36
Grammatically, that is difficult to work out in the New Testament simply because the way that the words are used in singular cases and plural cases and all that stuff, and I don't even want to get into that, not because I don't have time but because I don't understand it myself.
24:47
So that's obviously not my chosen interpretation of the passage. There is a third possibility and it is this, it is to take
24:54
Peter's words at face value. If you were to be forgiven, you're going to have to be baptized.
25:02
Now you say, but how do I reconcile that with my Protestant understanding of faith alone, grace alone,
25:08
Christ alone? That is a problem for us until we realize this, that baptism was the public confession of one's allegiance to Jesus Christ.
25:21
It is the public confession of one's allegiance to Jesus Christ. So Wehmeyer writes this, to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ was to publicly declare one's allegiance to Christ and one's desire to follow
25:36
Him as a disciple. For this reason, when Peter exhorted the Jews to be baptized, he was commanding them to express their allegiance to Christ, an allegiance that was indeed a necessary response to the gospel.
25:51
In this way, the command to be baptized incorporated both the physical act of water baptism and the commitment to Christ that it symbolized.
26:01
In the context of Acts 2 then, an unwillingness to be baptized would have exposed an unwillingness to obey the gospel and become a disciple of Christ.
26:10
Let me say that again, an unwillingness to be baptized in Acts 2 would have exposed an unwillingness to obey the gospel and become a disciple of Christ.
26:24
In that sense and for that reason, the Jews had to be baptized to be forgiven, for to refuse baptism was to refuse
26:31
Christ and the salvation that He offered. In other words, the Apostle Peter links baptism and faith so closely there as to almost not even draw a distinction between them.
26:43
Because the faith that saves is a faith that will say, be baptized, absolutely.
26:49
Whatever He commands, I will do. So if it's baptism, I'll do it. If it's stand out on the street corner and sing a song while spinning around in a circle,
26:56
I will do it. Whatever He commands, I will do. My allegiance is to Him. He is my Lord. So what
27:02
He commands, I shall do. Peter links baptism and faith so closely that to command them to be baptized is to command them to declare publicly in front of people who crucified their
27:14
Lord, their own allegiance to that same Lord. And to do so in front of the eyes of all the
27:20
Jews right there on the temple mount, right outside the temple gate, in front of a bunch of people who still to that day would continue to crucify
27:26
Christ if He were there. And it is to tell them, you must swear allegiance to Him, commit your life to Him and your baptism is not just a washing of water that saves you.
27:35
Instead, that baptism is the outward declaration that yes, my faith is real and I placed it in the crucified
27:40
Lord. Baptism itself has no ability to save, but baptism is the expression of repentant faith.
27:48
So can one be saved without being baptized? Yes, because the act of baptism does not save anyone, but the
27:54
New Testament knows nothing of an unbaptized believer. The thief on the cross was unable to be baptized and he is the single notable exception to that.
28:05
Don't be confused by the fact that Peter does not mention faith here because sometimes the
28:11
Scriptures describe our response to the gospel in terms of repentance, sometimes in the terms of faith. Faith and repentance go together.
28:17
So they are the two sides of the same coin. You cannot be saved by repentance alone without faith, nor can your faith, quote -unquote, be saved you apart from that turning from sin.
28:26
To believe saving on Christ is to turn from sin and to turn from sin is to turn savingly to Christ because these two things go together.
28:34
So James Dunn says, faith demands baptism as its expression. Baptism demands faith for its validity.
28:42
All right, faith demands baptism as its expression. Baptism demands faith for its validity.
28:49
So baptism is necessary not because it saves, it doesn't, but it is, listen carefully, the necessary response to the gospel.
28:59
We say that it is necessary because if we don't say that it's necessary, then we have to say it is optional and obeying
29:05
Christ is not optional. Those are your two options. Either baptism is commanded and therefore it is necessary to be baptized as a believer or Christ has commanded something that's just merely optional and you can take it or leave it at your own whim.
29:20
Those are your two options. So Peter here is not suggesting that baptism saves you. He is saying that baptism is the necessary response to this proclamation because saving faith itself has baptism as its expression.
29:35
So he is putting them together like that, not because being dipped in water saves you, it does not, it doesn't at all.
29:42
Let me give you an illustration of three separate men who might have been standing there to illustrate this point. Three separate men who might have been standing there in Pentecost Square that day.
29:50
All three of these have heard Peter preach the gospel, they've understood this and the first guy says, I understand my sin,
29:55
I turn from my sin, I'm believing upon Christ and Him alone and I'm putting my faith in Him and he does so and he gets in line to be baptized and he is baptized and walks away from there.
30:04
Is that man saved? Yeah. I mean, he repented. I hope you guys understand the gospel enough to know this.
30:11
He repented of his sin, he placed his faith in Christ and responded and was baptized. Is he saved? A hundred percent
30:16
I would say that he was, right? Especially in that context when being baptized was nearly a death sentence. You're doing this in the eyes of people who just crucified your
30:23
Lord 50 days ago and they still hate you. So the second man hears the same message, says,
30:32
I understand that, I'm riddled with my guilt, I place my faith in Jesus Christ, I turn from my sin, he gets in line to be baptized, he's waiting there, can't wait to get up to the head of the line, has a heart attack and dies right there in Pentecost Square that moment.
30:43
Was that man saved? Yes, he was. See, the response there is much better. So yes, he was saved because water baptism doesn't save you.
30:53
Third man says, I've heard this message, he says, okay, I'll repent, I'll trust Christ and then Peter gets to the point where he talks about baptism and says, now you must be baptized.
31:01
And the third guy says, yeah, I don't think I really want to do that. I'm just, I'm going to kind of go over here in the corner,
31:07
I'll watch all this unfold and he does not get baptized. Is that man saved? Yeah, anybody can say,
31:14
I repent, anybody can say, I believe, but it is the believer who will obey, who will obey.
31:22
So that illustrates, I think, the difference between that. Yes, you can be saved without baptism, but you cannot be obedient without baptism.
31:31
You can be saved, but you can't be obedient. Very first command, be baptized. You're not going to be baptized if you're going to reject that command.
31:41
Your salvation is not in question, your obedience is. But if that becomes the pattern of your life, that disobedience, then one has every right to question the legitimacy of your profession.
31:56
Now, fourth, we note their consecration. We don't take any time with this. Verse 42, they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship and to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
32:06
Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common, and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all as anyone might have need.
32:18
Day by day, continuing with one mind in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising
32:26
God and having favor with all the people, and the Lord was adding to their number day by day, those who were being saved. That was the evidence of their genuine salvation.
32:33
They continued in fellowship, in worship, in breaking bread together, in exercising hospitality and meeting one another's needs, in praying together, in worshiping together, and in reading the
32:42
Word together, and devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching. Those who were saved that day by their faith and then baptized, those who were saved that day continued and consecrated themselves to a lifestyle of obedience to the
32:56
Lord for His great work of salvation in their lives. They said, His people are our people,
33:03
His priorities are our priorities, His Word is our food, His life is our life, and so they began to live differently and they gave themselves to an obedient life that began on that moment of faith and then immediately baptism.
33:20
Now I want to give a brief explanation of what you are about to see here. Those who desire to be baptized are going to tell you why they're being baptized.
33:27
They're going to give their testimony at the microphone. And then they're going to come into the tank to be immersed. That's what the word baptized means, by the way.
33:34
It doesn't mean sprinkling or pouring, it means immersed, to be dipped into something. The immersion of the person in the water symbolizes their death, burial, and their resurrection in Christ.
33:43
The believer is one who, having trusted in Christ, believes and trusts that His death was the death in their place,
33:50
His burial was burial in their place, and His resurrection was resurrection in their place. And that because they identify with Him and because He has done all of those things on their behalf, they have died to sin, they have been buried with Him, and they've been raised again to newness of life, and so that's why we immerse people.
34:06
We submerge them below the water to symbolize their death and their burial, and then we bring them up again to symbolize their resurrection to newness of life.
34:13
And we do this in faith, recognizing that ultimately, because we have died with Him, been buried with Him, and been raised together to newness of life, when
34:20
He returns, He will resurrect us and He will raise us up again to life eternal and glorified bodies.
34:26
So baptism then is a representation in the physical realm of something that is true of us in the spiritual realm, that we died in Christ, we were buried with Him, and we rose again in Him.
34:37
Baptism proclaims our allegiance to Christ and our identification with Him. So those being baptized are doing so in obedience to the
34:44
Lord who commands them to publicly identify with Him and confess their allegiance to that crucified and risen
34:51
Savior. So with that then, we will have seven candidates come up and be baptized, and first up is
34:59
Peter. To me, being a Christian just meant going to church, reading the
35:05
Bible, and thinking all of it was true. Growing up, whenever I would sin and get caught,
35:11
I would say I was sorry, but I wasn't sorry that I had sinned. I was sorry that I had gotten caught, and I would continue to do the same thing when no one was looking.
35:20
I would provoke my brother for no reason, and when I got caught, I wasn't regretting what I had done to him.
35:25
If anything, I hated him more, but I was sorry that my dad had found out. But I came to realize that being a
35:32
Christian isn't just a routine that you did every so often throughout your life, but being a
35:37
Christian was my life. I realized that God didn't give His only Son on the cross just so that I could enjoy the blessings but spurn the responsibilities.
35:45
I couldn't enjoy the generosity of the believers around me, but not be generous to those around me.
35:53
He sent His Son to die for me and to save me from my sins, so that I may be His son. And in getting baptized,
35:59
I am proclaiming that God saved me not of anything I have done, but because of His salvation to save me from my sins.
36:19
Peter, have you repented of your sin and trusted Christ for salvation? I have. Do you desire to be baptized in obedience to His command?
36:25
I do. In obedience to His command, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I hope
36:44
I can get through this in my life in just probably the last 10 years. I was so self -righteous all my life.
36:53
I actually was baptized almost 60 years ago after having made an emotional decision for Christ as a child.
37:03
I didn't really understand all that I was doing. And like the
37:10
Pharisees who constantly challenged Jesus, I had a lot of head knowledge from home, church, even going to Bible school, but my heart had not been changed.
37:24
I majored on the minors like the Pharisees. I served out of a performance mindset, and I did serve
37:32
Christ supposedly all my life, but it wasn't from the right motivation. My heart hadn't been changed.
37:41
So through faithful exposition of God's Word and the illuminating work of His Spirit, God showed me who
37:47
He really is and how serious were my sins of rebellion against Him, wanting to control my own life, against His rule.
37:58
In reading His Word, it became apparent that I had made idols of myself and others, and I did not love
38:04
God or His Word. I wanted to, but I loved myself more.
38:10
So God opened my eyes, and He gave me repentance for these sins and the ability to believe in God's great mercy that sentenced
38:17
His sinless Son to take upon Himself the punishment I deserved, which was death.
38:24
So now I love Him more as I come to know Him in His Word. So, Pastor Jim Sermon on baptism last year,
38:34
I think it was in October last year, helped me want to obey Christ's command to me as His child, to be immersed in water as a symbol of death to myself and being raised to new life in Christ.
38:49
He has done so much for me. I want to please and honor Him in my life. I'm still a sinner, definitely, but I am assured of God's forgiveness and His steadfast love.
39:02
So what's so amazing about grace to me is that the God of glory would choose a wretched sinner and make me
39:10
His beloved child and even want to spend eternity with me. Praise God. Debbie, have you repented of your sin and placed your faith in Jesus Christ for salvation?
39:20
Yes. And you desire to be baptized in obedience to His commands? Yes. Based upon your professional faith in Christ and obedience to the commands of Christ, I baptize you in the name of the
39:28
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Hello, my name is
39:45
Wendy Tico. My journey to today has been circuitous. I was raised Catholic, but I never confirmed due to a crisis of faith.
39:54
I dabbled with Catholicism as an adult and I prayed the rosary regularly. I found it to be very calming.
40:00
But over the last five years, my faith has deepened and I focused more on prayer, scripture, and church doctrine that supports an individual relationship with God.
40:12
I place my faith in Christ. I believe in God, the Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth.
40:19
I believe He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to atone for our sins. That He died, was buried, rose on the third day, and is seated at the right hand of the
40:28
Father and will come again one day. I believe the Holy Spirit is the giver of life who guides and directs us towards sanctification.
40:37
And I'm excited to be baptized today as a proclamation of my faith. Wendy, have you repented of your sin and trusted
40:44
Christ for salvation? Yes. And you desire to be baptized in obedience to Him, in obedience to the command of Christ, and based upon your professional faith in Christ, I baptize you in the name of the
40:54
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Thank you.
41:02
Hi, I'm Jody McPhee.
41:29
Some of you here know the difficult and painful path I've walked for the past few years.
41:37
It's a journey I've traveled hand in hand with God, and it's led me to where I'm standing right now.
41:45
And because of His grace and His forgiveness, I declare today that I'm committing my life to Him.
41:54
Jody, have you repented of your sin and trusted Christ for salvation? You desire to be obedient to Him in baptism, in obedience to the command of Christ, and based upon your professional faith in Christ, I baptize you in the name of the
42:04
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Hello, my name is
42:25
Mike Lopez. I was born and raised in a Catholic home, baptized as an infant.
42:31
We attended church as a family. I learned to know and to love God, Jesus, and the
42:36
Holy Spirit. My teen years came, and I drifted away from the church.
42:42
I thought I could navigate life on my own. I was so wrong. My wife,
42:48
Leslie, and I had our teenage granddaughter, Dayla, come and stay with us as she was going through a very difficult time.
42:56
We felt she needed guidance more than what we were able to provide. The church was the best place for her.
43:04
We did not know where to go, and we met Kathy at Bonner General. We knew she worked part -time for the church and reached out to her.
43:12
She gave us directions and invited us to attend. Well, as I found out, the church was best for me as well.
43:22
Jim's sermon was nothing like I had heard before. I was touched. I'm seeing
43:27
Jesus from a different perspective with renewed faith and a better understanding. I'm now understanding my relationship with Jesus, how
43:36
His plan and my faith in Him has brought me to this place in my life. The parishioners we have met here at KCC have provided prayer for us in our time of need, giving comfort in knowing through our faith how
43:50
Jesus is always with us. I repent my sins, and my desire now is to be baptized through immersion with my newly found knowledge, the symbolizing of death, burial, and resurrection, leaving my former self and sin to walk with Jesus in faith, born again.
44:12
Mike, have you repented of your sin and placed your faith in Jesus Christ for salvation and desire to be obedient to Him in baptism?
44:19
Based upon your profession of faith in Christ and obedience to the command of Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the
44:24
Son, and the Holy Spirit. Hello, my name is
44:43
Leslie Lopez, and this is my Testament of faith.
44:50
By God's grace, since I can remember, I have believed in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
44:56
We learned about the Kootenai Community Church when we met
45:02
Kathy about two years ago. She invited us to attend a service. Both my granddaughter and I felt that Jim was preaching directly to us.
45:13
There was a connection we both felt in his message. I didn't know
45:19
I was spiritually starving until we came here to Kootenai, and for the past ten months we've been attending services.
45:29
I have never considered being baptized until this last year, and now
45:34
I feel humbly beckoned to submit my life to Jesus and God's will. I believe that by God's hand,
45:46
I am here where I'm supposed to be, and to accept
45:52
Jesus as my Savior, to repent my sins, and be baptized so that I may wholeheartedly follow
45:59
Jesus Christ, and hear and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Leslie, if you repented of your sin and placed your faith in Christ for salvation, and you desire to be obedient to Him and believe
46:13
His baptism, in obedience to the command of Christ and based upon your profession of faith in Christ, I baptize you in the name of the
46:18
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Hi, my name is
46:36
David Lynch. Bear with me as I try to get through this. This is not easy for me to do.
46:44
Through several recent events that have happened in my life lately, I now understand that I have been living a lie for the last 19 years.
46:53
My profession of faith has been false. My life has been steeped in bitterness and anger, and my heart has been consumed by the lust of my flesh and the lust of my eyes.
47:03
When I look at the deeds of my flesh in Galatians 5 .19, I see myself staring back at me.
47:10
In the last 19 years, there has been no evidence of genuine fruit of the Spirit, no transformation from my sinful nature, or no spiritual growth.
47:19
I have spent so long living this lie that I couldn't see where I truly was at. Not intentionally trying to deceive others, but by being deceived myself,
47:27
I could not see the harm I was doing. I was holding on to my profession of faith based on a prayer
47:32
I said 19 years ago, and some lifestyle changes, instead of examining my life in the light of the truth, which is the
47:39
Word of God. Reading my Bible and going to church was just something I did. Checked it off my list of things to do, thinking
47:47
I was good to go. I would come to church, smile through the teeth of a dead man, and most of the time thinking, are we done yet?
47:55
Not only was I not leaving my home, I was showing my children what a hypocrite I was. I have been in many of your homes over the past years having dinner, all the while trying to produce fruit of righteousness so that you would not see who
48:08
I truly was. I did not do this intentionally, since I was also deceived in this.
48:13
I am truly sorry. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to just walk away from the church and my faith, thinking nothing is changing to me and this is just a waste of time.
48:27
But God, but God being rich in mercy, because of his great love which he loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, he made us alive with Christ.
48:44
By grace you have been saved. Today I stand here by the will of the
48:49
Father, through the sacrifice of Christ, by his life, his death, his burial and resurrection, and through the regenerating work of the
48:57
Holy Spirit, I stand here today, born again. I now have a desire to live a life that would glorify
49:04
God in everything that I do, to live faithfully in the life that he has set before me. In Ephesians 2 .10
49:11
it says, We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which
49:16
God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. Through the study of God's word and through prayer and the work of the
49:23
Holy Spirit, I now get to learn how to obey God and truly love my wife and to be the man that God has called me to be by leading my home in truth and righteousness and show my children what a godly man looks like.
49:37
These last few weeks, I have been overwhelmed by the grace of God and my heart is overflown with joy of the
49:43
Lord. When I read through scripture, it has now become powerful and alive and I now have a new understanding of what
49:50
I have read for the last 19 years. Worship music has become rich and joyous. Taking communion for the first time wasn't,
49:59
Well, here I am Lord, please forgive my sins. But instead, it was a glorious act of worship that I have never felt.
50:07
The Lord has begun and enabled the restoration process between my wife and my children. By confessing my failure as a husband and a father and asking for their forgiveness,
50:17
I now get to spend the rest of my life loving and cherishing the gift that God has given for it. Now I want to glorify
50:24
God with my obedience to fulfill the command of God to believe and be baptized.
50:32
David, if you have repented of your sin, place your faith in Christ for salvation and desire to be obedient to Him in baptism.
50:39
In obedience to the command of Christ and based upon your profession of faith in Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the
50:44
Holy Spirit. Let's pray together.
51:09
Father, we are so grateful for this ordinance and for all that it represents, for the genius of it.
51:16
We see in this the death and burial and resurrection of our Savior and our identification with that and union together as a church family.
51:25
And it is such a blessing to all of us who have repented of our sins and put our faith in Christ. And I can't help after this message today and after the service to pray,
51:35
Lord, for those that are here. They're not moved by this. They don't understand it.
51:44
Lord, I know that only Your Spirit can convict of sin. And I pray,
51:49
Lord, that that would be exactly what happens, that through Your Word, through this service, through the testimonies of faith, that You might convict and elect sinners today.
51:59
And turn from their sins and put their faith in You. And Lord, I pray that You give them no rest and pester them and give them no sleep until they're able to make that decision.
