Romans 7:1-6
It is a great blessing to be with you this morning to get to know you, Saints of the your faces, I glorify God. It is a joy for my wife and myself to be with you. If there is one of you that is for the first time here at church, I pray that God may work in your heart.
If you are a member of this church, in the same way I pray for God to work in your heart. And you might think that these people just talk about Christ and Christ and Christ again. If you are thinking that you might hear a different thing, sorry to disappoint you.
We will continue talking about Christ. Romans chapter 7 from 1 through 6. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law of the husband. So if in the life of the husband another man is united, she will be called adulteress.
But if her husband dies, she is free from that law. So if another husband is united, she will not be adulteress. So you, my brothers and sisters, have died by the law through the body of Christ, so that you may be of another, of the one who rose from the dead, so that we may bear fruit for God.
Because while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions that were by the law worked in our limbs, bearing fruit for death. But now we are free from the law for having died for that in which we were subject, so that we may serve under the new regime of the Spirit and not under the old regime of the letter.
I'm going to read. Or do you not know, brothers, for I'm speaking to those who know the law, that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives. For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives.
But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law.
And if she marries another man, she is not an adulteress. Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit.
For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions arose by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written law.
We will be meditating under the title of Christ, the husband of the Church. And under this title, we are going to be seeing what God has for us today. If we say that we are Christians, we should look like Christ.
We learn at the Sunday school, little Christ, like imitators of Christ. And we are in a marriage, we learn from one another. And sometimes we do the same gestures or the same movements. We speak the same words.
And the same thing happens with Christ and us. An illustration says, if you want to know a Christian, you can know him through seeing how he drives. The story says that there was a Christian driving at 50 miles per hour, and he was singing while he was driving.
He was singing the hymn, God will take care of you. But then he saw that another person was just going further and faster, and he just pushed the throttle. And he reached 70 miles per hour. And he started singing, he leaded me.
So the other car started speeding up. And he reached 90 miles per hour. And he started singing, near my God to thee. And the other was not pushing back. And he went to 110 miles per hour. And as a good Christian, he was just even beyond that.
And he started singing face to face with Christ, my Savior. When we see Christ as our husband, and brothers, to the ends that this illustration have from the Apostle Paul, la parte femenina, la esposa como iglesia.
In this case, we are the feminine part. And the Apostle Paul takes this precious analogy that we have written from our Lord since Genesis. Uniendo en santo matrimonio a Adan y Eva. United Adam and Eve in a holy marriage.
And the question is, as Christians, how we become to be the wife of Christ, the bride of Christ. So podemos ver algunas cosas que nos arrojaran luz. In our text, we can see some lights to us. The first is that is a kind of a union between law and men.
We cannot be saved through the law or through ourselves.
But in a natural way, the humanity or the humankind is under the law.
And to become husband or to be united with Christ.
In this marriage between the law and men. It is a marriage that is basically fixed. Since we have been born. We born with this. We have been born under this law and under this law we die.
And now notice what the verse four is saying. Likewise, brothers, you also have died to the law. You see, we were united to the law. But clearly says, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ.
How we get to this point? How is that we die to the law? Because we look alive. In the previous chapter, 6, the Apostle Paul is going to give us this ordinance from the Lord. So we are going to see a dramatization of when somebody is buried and is going to rise.
And this literally is a symbol of dying and a resurrection. Another way to separate us from the law is through a divorce. And the Apostle Paul deals with this, and this divorce is not an option. Somebody needs to die.
God is not telling us to kill the law. When I think on this, I think on this situation with a woman. When this woman had a husband, and her husband died, and then she married his brother, and so on. Married seven brothers.
That was a strange situation where it seems to me like she was putting some poison in the coffee for him to drink. Just a joke. But the idea of Paul is not that we murder the law. So these words, these options just point at us.
You have also died to the law. So we are the ones that died. The Apostle Paul makes us clear in Galatians. With Christ, I am crucified with him. And it is not me, but Christ in me. Let me tell you an illustration between the law and Christ and us.
When we were united with the law, it was not a very happy marriage. And this is not related that the law was treating us bad. Like today we can see in some marriages, beating or just insults. But we see that this marriage becomes difficult because this spouse, the law, is perfect.
And the wife of the spouse is imperfect. I am imperfect. Every time that something is done to Mr. Law, I'm going to fall short. If he asks me to clean the house, he at the end of the day is going to come with white gloves.
And he's going to come and pass the finger all over the surfaces. And he's going to see that there is dust. I would never be able to fulfill those requirements from law. But then the Apostle Paul introduces us to Christ.
And see this phrase in verse 4, it's beautiful. So that you may belong to another. Now we are going to belong to Christ. And remember, somebody needs to die. One of the spouses must die. For the marriage would end.
Brothers and sisters, in the baptism, we are dead to sin. To the efforts of our own efforts to be saved. And we are raised up to walk in a new life. Belonging to Christ and just Christ. And now legally, it should be a marriage.
One marriage. To be united with Christ. And we can see this and understand. Through the covenant that he does with himself. Shedding his own blood. And we now, we are part of him. Now if you notice at the end of 4 and the beginning of 5.
And there are some fruits that happens between the marriage of law and us. The law is going to reveal or expose sin in us. But we see that the new marriage is going to be fruitful one. It's going to have sons and daughters.
At the end of 4 it says, in order that we may bear fruit for God. Because in verse 5, while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions arose by the law. They were fruits. So the law exposed in us the fruits and everything of those fruits were sinful.
Idolatry, lies and fornication. All of those were our fruit while we were united with the law. And not because the law was evil. But we were the evil ones. But now in this union with Christ. But now united with this law, with Christ.
We are able to bear fruit that is pleasing to God. We can live a holy life bringing glory to God. We can do this work that He prepared beforehand to my work on them. Isn't this amazing? Isn't this awesome?
Now we are united with Christ to give glory to Him. Let me tell you some answers from the bride to Christ, her husband. In Ephesians 5 .32, Paul says that in the verse previous to that. When he is talking about the wives and husbands.
He is talking about because of Christ and the church. And Paul uses the word in Greek, Megas, which is great, big. It is something important, intense. This union between Christ and the church. Now think on the value that this wife has to the husband.
The wife has died in the husband. And at the same time raised up by the husband. How much Christ loved the church. I love my wife. I love my church in El Pachote. I am sure that Pastor Jacob and Pastor Alan love their wives.
And they love their church here. But brothers and sisters, there is someone that loves more our church and ourselves. And that person is Christ our Lord. He loves infinitely more his church. Christ has given infinitely more value to his church.
And now if this is the first time that you visit a church. I want to encourage you to be more constant in your learning of the Lord here in this church. And if you are a member of this church. I encourage you every day to continue showing the character of Christ in this church.
Many Christians today. In quotes. Oh I love the Lord. I love God. I seek him every day. But the church. Thank you. There are so many hypocrites there. So many religious. You know what you are saying. You are despising the bride of Christ.
This weekend I enjoy meals with you brothers. But let's put an example. If I were her Christian. I invite you to my home. But don't take your wife because I don't like her. Let me tell you something. I will go to her house.
But I will be greatly offended. Brothers and sisters we cannot do that with Christ and his beloved wife. We cannot diminish the value of the church that Christ paid with his blood. Now let me give you some duties from the church.
It's like the wife corresponds to her husband. She is faithful to him. The church is faithful to his beloved husband. It looks not to get polluted with the worldly ideas. It keeps her dress white and pure.
She serves him with all her strength and mind. She does whatever it takes to fulfill what the husband has in charge of her. And that's because the gospel needs to go through the church. And to reach the streets and the lost souls.
It's a love that the wife has to her husband. Showing the love that Christ has for his church and to the lost. Our beloved Lord and husband is doing his will through his church. And the church answers with happiness.
And the Holy Spirit working in men that have been dead to the law. To live a life that reflects more and more to Jesus Christ. The church becomes this help meat to Christ. Doing on earth what God wants us to do here on earth.
Bringing new Christians and new spiritual lives. Through the exposition of the scripture. Brothers and sisters we need to understand clearly this. We are not united here or we don't come to our own pleasure.
We are not here to talk about politics or sports. We are here to talk about what Christ did to his church. In verse 6 we read. But now we are released from the law. Having died to that which held us captive.
So that we serve in the new way of the spirit and not in the old way of the written. By the grace of God we are united to Christ. Under this covenant of grace. We don't have anything to do to become saved.
But we need to answer as the saved people does. As the church answers to her husband. Now we have a life that delights us in obedience. What a wonderful thing is beloved brothers. That we are united to Christ.
And we are not just an object of his. We are part of him. We are his body. We are enabled to do his will. And one day. One day in glory. We will be with him for the eternity. He is worthy. That we might be a wife.
That brings glory to his name. Let me pray. Lord, I pray for this church. Bautista Providencia church here in Perryville. I pray for our visits. I pray for the members of this church. That we might reflect that we are the wife of Christ.
Lord, free us from ourselves. Free us from wanting to strive again. To obtain some merit. Guide us to bring all glory and honor. To the one who deserves it. To the one who is the king of the universe.
Lord, help us. To bring glory to your name. We ask this in the glorious name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
