Jesus Questions the Jewish Leaders in Mark 12

So all week we've been looking at Mark chapter 12 and how the Jewish leaders, all of them, the Pharisees, the Herodians, the Sadducees, even the scribes, all trying to discredit Jesus by challenging him with difficult questions that were difficult only for humans.

And they thought that they could discredit him with the other Jews because Jesus was exposing their hypocrisy. But now it's time for Jesus to ask the questions. And you see, starting in verse 35, that Jesus is now going to start asking them, how can the scribes say that Christ is the son of David?

And this is from the Psalms. And what you see is that in the Psalms, it says, the Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand, and I will put your enemies under your feet. So Jesus says, David called himself, calls him Lord.

So how could his son be Lord? Now, the idea here being is, how can you have someone who is a descendant of yours, but you call him Lord? Basically, they had no answer. Why? Because the fact was that David, Jesus' father, but David is calling Jesus his future son, or grandson, great-grandson, as it goes, knows that he is Lord.

So basically, he's saying the Psalms point to Jesus Christ as being God. That's why he can answer these questions. That's why he could challenge them and call them hypocrites and say he's going to give the kingdom to the Gentiles.
