Could you go through the other 15 Bible verses and explain why they don't belong in the text?

Well, the reason why they don't belong there is because they aren't in the original text. Right. I mean, that's the reason.

It's not because, oh, the theology is weird and so it shouldn't go there. So that's the explanation for all of them?

Right. That's the explanation for all of them. So because like with the one that we looked at last week in Acts 8 .37,

it wasn't that the theology was wrong. Right. It's just Luke didn't write that.

Right. So you shouldn't put it in the text. If we're going to be as faithful to the text as possible, it doesn't matter how much it is alike other verses in the

Bible, or even if that verse drew from another verse and brought that in, it's still not being faithful to what the original author wrote to the original audience.

So then my question is, why didn't they just drop that all together and then number it what's left correct, instead of just dropping the number?

I didn't explain that last week. So the numbering system came about after those verses had already been added to the text.

Oh. So when you're talking like 500 or 600 years after Acts was written, and that was when

Acts 8 .37 got dropped in there. Okay. Well, at the time, there weren't chapter and verse markers.

Okay. So somebody brought that into the text before the numbering system came about, which was sometime around 11, 1200

AD. I can't remember exactly what century it was that we started chapter and verse.

They started adding in chapter and verses. Okay. It was certainly there by the time the King James translators did, well, even the

Geneva Bible and then the King James Bible. So we'd already had that chapter and verse system in place, and they didn't want to change it up because people were already recognizing scripture according to those chapter and verses.

And so when it just kind of came about years later that we discovered the Alexandrian manuscripts, we're finding manuscripts that were even newer, original, even closer to the originals than the

King James, the Byzantine manuscripts that the King James translators used, and realizing that those earlier manuscripts don't have some of those extra added verses.

And so with the more modern translations, see, today our translations are actually more accurate than the

King James was. Yeah. And you might think, well, the King James, you know, they're closer to the original writers than we are.

So wouldn't we be getting further and further away from the original text the more the years go by?

But the reality of the situation is we have, through technology, access to more manuscripts than the

King James translators had. And plus, we don't have to travel to different parts of the world to read those manuscripts.

Yeah. They're all, like, digitally uploaded, and you can just access them through computer.

And I'm sure some of them were unearthed, right, if I remember right? Oh, yeah, like the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in a cave, you know, things like that.

So they might not have had access to them at that point. Yeah. Just as the years go on, the technology and archaeological discovery and things like that have given us access to more manuscripts.

Now, we don't have the originals. We don't have what's called the original autographs. Yeah. So when you're reading

Acts, or you're reading the oldest manuscript of the Book of Acts, you're not reading a manuscript that Luke actually wrote.

Okay. It's a copy of a copy. Okay. You know, something that kind of came down the line a little bit. But through all the manuscripts that we have, we know with certainty that what we've got in the

Bible is actually what was originally intended. Even a skeptic like Bart Ehrman, who wrote

Misquoting Jesus. Okay. And, of course, he was popular a dozen years ago or something when he's writing these books that are hitting the

New York Times bestseller, and he's talking about there's like 200 ,000 variations in the New Testament and all this kind of thing.

And people are going, whoa! Okay. But they don't understand what that means. Yeah. You know, it means we have multiple manuscripts, and just one little letter difference is a variation.

And if you have that letter difference across 15 manuscripts, well, that's now 15 variations. Right. So, anyway.

Yeah, it just was silly. He just knew how to... Word it. Yeah, right.

% accuracy what we have in the Bible is what the original authors wrote. Hmm.

And it's kind of funny to hear him go through all of that because you hear him kind of like casting all this doubt... Yeah.

...into the authenticity of the Bible and all of this. But when somebody asks him the question, so, what do you think the original author actually wrote?

His answer will be, I think it's pretty much like what we have today. Huh. So, it's like, well, which is it? Yeah. Do we doubt what it is that we have was original?

Or, you know, he still maintains that over the course of the Gospels, you see myth developing.

Right. And so, the miracles that get attributed to Jesus weren't, you know, he didn't actually perform any miracles.

That's Bart Ehrman. But we know that what we read are eyewitness testimony.

Right. As we hear from 2 Peter 1, we are not bearing witness to you with myths that we just made up.

Right. But we were eyewitnesses to his majesty. These were not cleverly devised myths is the way that Peter puts it there.

Yes. So, we're reading eyewitness testimony when we look into the pages of the Bible. So, how about these other verses?

Let's go through these. And this will pretty much be the rest of our broadcast. Okay. This is how far we'll get. So, let's look at Matthew 17.

Verse 18. He rebukes the demon. It came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, why could we not cast it out?

Because, remember, the disciples tried and failed. Right. And Jesus said to them, because of your little faith, for truly

I say to you, if you have faith like the grain of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.

Isn't it 21? 21. 21 got skipped. So after Jesus says to the disciples, because of your little faith, then you go to 22, and they're gathering in Galilee.

That's what Matthew originally wrote. So what happened to verse 21? Well, if you look down in the footnotes, you got footnotes on there?

I think I have another five. Okay. So in mine, it says, some manuscripts insert verse 21, but this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting.

That's with reference to the demon. Okay. So go back up to verse 20 again. Because of your little faith, that was why the disciples weren't able to cast out the demon, for truly

Correct. So this is being borrowed from Mark 9. There in Mark 9, you have the story of Jesus casting an unclean spirit out of the boy.

This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer. So his response to them in Mark is different than the response in Matthew.

Some scribe who was copying Matthew decided to grab that answer from Mark, probably thinking the same thing you did.

I'd be curious. I think cross -referencing just came about for the sake of cross -referencing. Because, I mean, that would take you to the answer rather than having to add more to the text.

Well, exactly. You can just put a cross -reference little notation there and then flip over. But at the time when the scribes were doing that, there weren't chapter and verse markers.

You can't say with 1 Corinthians, well, we're the audience. No. The church in Corinth is the audience. Right. That doesn't mean it doesn't have application for us, nor does it mean that the

And so you couldn't really say that... They were not Jews. Exactly. You couldn't really say the emphasis was on writing to Jews.

So this is after Jesus has rebuked the Pharisees, for they teach the commandments of man rather than the commandments of God.

In verse 14, he says, and he called the people to him again and said to them, hear me, all of you, and understand, there is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.

Okay. So you might notice a few skips in here. Let's go to Mark 9. And we are in, let's start in verse 42.

Mark 9, 42. Jesus says, whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell to the unquenchable fire.

What did you see omitted there? 44 and 46. Correct. Two verses. So with regard to verse 46, some manuscripts add verses 44 and 46, which are identical with verse 48, where the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.
