Discipling The Nations Starts At Home
Be not wise in your own eyes fear the Lord and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh. Refreshment your bones and I'll teach my children. You need to love the Lord with all your heart. Need to trust him with everything that you have you need to take times where you've sinned.
Mom dad had to punish you. You need to trust in God to forgive you for those things. Don't think that you can handle it by yourself and then we'll sing that song the song that says My foes are out to get me.
Son, you're so your foes are at this point sin, but God can punch the teeth out of that sucker. You'll find forgiveness in Christ and in Christ alone and If that's all it is, what was that 45 seconds?
If that's all they hear that you've heard the gospel Christ will can redeem you from your sin and then they hear that every single day a little question a Little bit about God little something to remember.
So if somebody asks you a question or you're thinking what do I do in this situation? I can remember this answer. I know that I've heard stuff from the Bible. I Know I can trust in the Lord. I know I can sing praises to him.
I know I'm gonna hide his word in my heart, so I won't sin against him. And then we'll pray together. You know, usually we'll Put him in the bathtub and send him on the bed. It's important because Too many times there are there's there's always discipleship going on especially in our children.
There's always discipleship going on a lot of times. It's it's a school. The school will get them and they'll try to cram whatever ideology in their head that they want. If we're not counteracting that by showing them the truth of the gospel.
Our kids are gonna be in a world of hurt. It doesn't take much time. It is hard to do take some effort but the benefits are Incredible because you're introducing your children to a holy righteous. You don't get through Jesus Christ who can forgive them of their sins.
Now I've got I brought a couple of resources. I wanted to just point out That might be able to help folks this one it's the Bible. Have it have it on hand good stuff. This is. It's called the children's first catechism is put out by Great Commission publications.
It's a arm is a publishing arm of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in America. I don't know if they have an American in their name either way. Are there a solid group of people? They are going to teach you to baptize your children.
So it's paid special attention to those portions. Nobody paid special attention to those portions. Yes. But no solid resource that teaches on first few questions you heard young Santiago talk about. Some of the questions going, you know, why do you need Christ as your priest?
Why do you need Christ as your king? What happens that to believers when they die and it goes through the once there's like 150 and this is for children. Right, and here's here's the thing. This was done.
This one was done because Our culture is dumbed down by the Westminster shorter catechism. Originally was made for children his age. Larger catechism was made for adults. Well, there's several catechisms.
I would suggest This one the Westminster shorter and larger catechism if you're coming from a Presbyterian background. The Baptist catechism is basically the Westminster shorter catechism only they put in Baptist type stuff.
The Heidelberg catechism starts off with a wonderful question, you know, what is your only hope in life and death? Oh good. It's the answer is like nine miles long, but it's so good. You know Basically says that my only hope in life and in death is that that I know Christ and that he's redeemed me only it's much Longer, it's very good.
I Don't know the New City catechism put out by I Forget who it's solid as far as it goes to. If you're having to get any older children. Preteen teenage years, maybe it's just you and a spouse at home.
This work this book was put out by Reformation heritage books. It is called family worship Bible guide. What it does is it starts off? It says Psalm 110 which we went on today and it reads Just a couple things a little devote two little sections of devotion in order to get you Motivated if you're having trouble coming up with something to say.
This will help you. This will help you you go along. For instance our Savior reigns. Jesus is Lord of all he wields the scepter of his word across the world and we are either made his subjects. We remain his enemies.
Those who claim to be Christ should be distinguished by true holiness. The power of Christ's spirit causes his true people to willingly offer themselves To him as a living sacrifice and it goes on and there's other sections different prompts just to get you get your brain working.
If you're having trouble coming up with something. Kicks you in the right direction. Well, if you'd like to learn to sing the Psalms the book of Psalms for worship is fantastic. It's put out by Crown and Covenant.
There's an older version that's read called the book of Psalms for singing. It's really good to Trinity. There's a Trinity Psalter out there book of our day Psalms of David and meter Is great, too. Those are mostly and you can put whatever tune you want you to in fact the one that we sang today.
Um, you can sing to the tune of Gilligan's Island because it's also it's also in common meter. So if you only know Gilligan's Island, you can sing like half of these. It's great. I'm also there's a lot of good Materials.
I just had this one in my bag. This is put out by. This is put out by the Associate Reform Presbyterian. There they are. This is their quarterly. It just goes through the Psalms. It picks a psalm. I mean, there's only like like 12 lessons.
But it's like a page and a half per one. It tells you daily readings. Gives you a little question has a scripture right in there and some thoughts on it. Well, there's other Resources other people out there.
You don't have to look for Presbyterians or it's just ones that I had the ones I'm familiar with. I just kind of wanted to encourage all of that. Um. It doesn't take much to disciple your children. But it needs to be intentional.
It needs to be Focused and you need to have an end goal in mind. My children will know the faith. My family will be a family That is marked off by their Their Devotion to God in his word. Then we trust for trusting Christ for the rest.
So, I don't know how much time we have or what we're trying to do, but I figured 15 minutes. I don't have anything else. Y 'all got any questions. Okay. Y 'all have any questions? Yeah, I've heard I Don't know either like 86 of statistics are made up so I'll make one up to.
It's somewhere between between two-thirds and three-quarters of Teenagers when they leave. I think this is right if I'm wrong don't quote me on it. I think it was. I think it was the Southern Baptist that did a study on it.
I think they said somewhere between two-thirds and three-quarters when they leave. On youth group recruitment when you go off to college you don't see him again and If you see him again, you don't see him again until they have children to bring it back into the church.
What that says to me and each situation is different. Well, that says to me is that their faith. Either wasn't that important to them or they never really understood so. There's two things there one We need to teach our children the faith and two we need to teach them the importance of the faith.
So show them what is it that we're doing in this world? Why is it important that you know this? Why is it implies? Why is it that? When I'm telling you that Christ is the only answer. And somebody else is telling you that you descend from water that fell on the rocks that turn into dinosaurs.
What is the difference there why is that important. That we believe what the Bible says. So I mean it'd be hard to speak into each situation. But I think a part of it is discipleship because I mean discipleship has been something the church has done terrible on for a while now adults children everybody.
Because we wanted to see numbers we wanted to see the church grow, but we didn't and I want to say that about everybody but We wanted to bring people in we Wasn't saying a mile wide an inch deep. Whereas we should have been.
Like parable of the seeds we should have been worried about getting the weeds out of the garden making sure the roots grew deep. We had good soil, and then we planted the gospel. Right where where it lay right where it should have been then pray.
We want your children to grow up. You know who has the power of God under salvation. The gospel where does that come from? God so we're gonna see our children saved who do we need to ask to save our children?
God.
Yeah, sure. Sure. Yep, it's anything else. You're right.
No shouldn't be. Oh I. Yeah, one of the one of the Psalms that they would sing during the Passover season they would sing. It's probably one of the Psalms that Christ sang when he instituted the Lord's Supper.
Which is this saying him and then they left they went out. One of the verses says my gifts of thanks I'll offer you and on the Lord's name call the vows I promised to the Lord. I'll keep and pay them all before the people of the Lord within his temple courts there in your midst Jerusalem give praises to the Lord.
Christ was singing this about paying. The vow of keeping the promise of God as he knew that in just a few hours. He was going to his death. And he's saying the psalm looking. You know at those he was going to die for knowing that these were written about him many many years ago.
It was incredible very good. So we've got some people trickling in. Does anybody have any any questions or anything? I don't want to get a song together. Yeah, let's punch some teeth out. Yeah, we got all sorts of stuff.
You got a psalm 45 talks about it's the original version of Luther's 46. 46 is the original version of Luther's mighty fortresses our God. It's saying God is our refuge and our strength the present help in our distress.
And it's sung to the same tune as the mighty fortresses our God. It's the original it was better. So, I don't know why Luther had to rewrite it in German's one. Oh, yeah. Another thing that helps you with you when you're singing the Psalms it goes through the full gamut of human emotion.
There is Psalms that make you feel like you are on top of the world. And Psalms that would remind you just how much of a worm you are and in all of them that points you to Christ. Sure anybody have anything else to add and it doesn't let's pray and then we'll take a short break.
Lord God in heaven we thank you for your grace for your goodness to us and pray this we look to Discipleship as we look to the nations that need to be discipled. We know that at home. We have been given a mission field of our children.
Those in our family the ones that you've given to us to raise up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord those of you. That you have called to to be close to the gospel. God, we pray that we wouldn't take that lightly that we would Teach our children diligently would raise our families.
Well that even if we were older and have no children home that we would still as families. Remember who you are and give you the honor and glory that you do that. We talked about your word and your law if we sit by the side as we get up and go out rather than the doorposts of our house and bind it to our heads and Forehands and everything else to remember who you are.
And keep you in front of us at all times. Love you, Lord in Christ. Let me pray.
