John, pt. 51 | John 8:37-47

00:04
If you will, at this time, take your Bibles and turn them to the Gospel of John, chapter eight.
00:10
We will consider verses 37 through 47. The Gospel of John, chapter eight, 37 through 47.
00:21
This is our 50th message in this glorious gospel.
00:29
Let me pray. Oh, God, in the name of your son, Jesus the
00:35
Christ, Lord, I ask that the spirit that you have placed in me will speak forth to your people your word and what you would have them to understand today, or please use me, your manservant as a vessel to communicate your word.
01:05
I pray this in Jesus' name, amen. So let's begin with the text,
01:11
John, chapter eight, beginning in verse 37.
01:21
This is Jesus speaking, I know that you are Abraham's seed, and yet you are seeking to kill me because my word has no place in you.
01:39
I speak the things which I have seen with my father, therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.
01:52
They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said to them, if Abraham were your father, if you are
02:04
Abraham's children, you would do the deeds of Abraham, but now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which
02:13
I heard from God. This Abraham did not do.
02:19
You are doing the deeds of your father. They said to him, we are not born of sexual immorality.
02:28
We have one father, God. Jesus said to them, if God were your father, you would love me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come of myself, but he sent me.
02:47
Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear my word.
02:54
You are of your father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father.
03:03
He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him.
03:10
Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
03:19
But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. Which of you convicts me of sin?
03:27
If I speak truth, why do you not believe me? He who is of God hears the words of God.
03:38
For this reason, you do not hear them because you are not of God.
03:46
Our theme for this Lord's Day is Like Father, Like Son, and this will be part one.
03:54
Like Father, Like Son, and we have heard this saying, we've heard sayings like this, right?
03:59
Like father, like son, or like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
04:07
It's quite often I see myself and my children or I see them doing something that I used to do or that I do, or that I used, there's something that I used to do when
04:17
I was a child that they've never seen me do, or I see them doing things that my mom and father done, and they never hung out with them to see my mother and father do these things, right?
04:30
Why is that? Because the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Now that's not always the case, but for the most part, it's very well, it's true, right?
04:44
So my proposition for this Lord's Day is that you cannot serve both
04:52
God and the devil as your father. You cannot have
04:58
God as your father and have the devil as your father, just like you cannot serve both
05:05
God and money. You cannot serve both
05:10
God and the devil. Just like the hoe, like father, like son, which is our theme.
05:20
Whoever it is that you are most like is your father.
05:28
For some reason, and I'm not a big Star Wars fan, but every time I say that, I kind of hear that Darth Vader voice in my head, and I won't give you my interpretation because I'm just not that guy.
05:40
But Jesus in our text is speaking to a group of people who believe they believe they are children of the one true
05:49
God. And here in the Bible Belt, we are surrounded by people who believe that they are children of the one true
05:57
God. I've been on that street corner where I go to preach at for three years now, and most everyone that has stopped to speak to me has professed faith in Jesus Christ and that they are a child of God.
06:11
And again, only one so far has told me the gospel. We're surrounded by people who believe they are children of the one true
06:21
God. One of the biggest lies told by the devil is spoken from Christians, and that is that all of us are born children of the one true
06:32
God. The Bible is actually really clear about this subject, that not everyone is a child of God.
06:42
Turn with me real quick to 1 John 3. We read this a couple of weeks ago.
06:50
Just look at verse 10, verse 10, 1
06:56
John 3, verse 10. And by this, the children of God and the children of the devil are manifested.
07:07
Everyone who does not do righteousness is not of God, as well as the one who does not love his brother.
07:19
Right here, this righteousness, do righteousness, practice righteousness, this means that you're living your life in a practice of righteousness, not that you don't slip up in sin, but that you're practicing righteousness, you're doing righteous.
07:38
But it also has a second meaning to this, and if we ever really dive into 1 John, we'll really break that down, but it's actually pointing to faith in Jesus Christ as well, and to love your brothers.
07:55
So those who are children of God, they practice righteousness, they believe in Jesus, and they love their brothers.
08:01
Those that do not practice these things, believing in Jesus and loving their brothers, they are not children of God.
08:11
So we have, in the New Testament, very clearly tells us how to tell the children of God from the children of the devil.
08:20
In our outline, we're going to look at four different seats. Now today, we're only going to visit with three of them, excuse me, we're going to look at five, forgive me, five different seeds.
08:37
We have the physical seed of Abraham, the spiritual seed of Abraham, the heavenly seed of God, the promise seed of Abraham, and the demonic seed of Satan.
08:51
Again, we're only going to look at three of those today, so let me go over them again. Point number one, the physical seed of Abraham.
08:58
Point number two, the spiritual seed of Abraham. Point number three, the heavenly seed of God.
09:05
Point number four, the promise seed of Abraham. And point number five, the demonic seed of Satan.
09:14
And as we transition, take your Bibles and turn to Genesis chapter three. Genesis chapter three.
09:23
And we will not answer everything that Genesis chapter three has to say today, but we will touch on it.
09:33
In verse 15, we're introduced to the new covenant by way of promise only, as well as two kinds of seed, the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent.
09:49
I'm going to begin in verse 13. Genesis chapter three, beginning in verse 13.
09:57
Then Yahweh, God, said to the woman, what is this you have done?
10:04
So let's remember real quick here before we read any further, that God has told them not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10:16
The woman somehow bumps into the serpent and convinces her to take a bite, but not only to take a bite, but to give some to her husband.
10:34
And so again, 13, then Yahweh, God, said to the woman, what is this you have done?
10:41
The woman said, the serpent deceived me and I ate.
10:47
And Yahweh, God, said to the serpent, listen here, listen, listen clearly, because you have done this, done what?
10:57
Deceived the woman. Because you have done this, cursed are you more than any of the cattle and more than every beast of the field.
11:07
On your belly you will go and dust you will eat all the days of your life.
11:15
Verse 15, and I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed, the devil's seed and her,
11:32
Eve, he, the seed that's coming from Eve, shall bruise your head and you shall bruise him on the heel.
11:49
This is the promise of the new covenant. I don't believe, according to what
11:57
I hold to as covenant theology, that this is the beginning of the covenant of grace. I believe that this is a promise of the covenant of grace that's fulfilled in the new covenant.
12:09
So if you just see here, the promise is that one is coming, a seed is coming from the woman.
12:18
That's the promise. And how do you know when it's fulfilled? He bruises the head of the serpent while only bruising his heel.
12:26
Here we see the curse to the serpent is the promise of the new covenant.
12:33
The bruising of the head of the serpent is the binding of Satan. This is what we see in chapter two of Hebrews, how
12:42
Jesus takes the power, the keys of death from Satan. He does so through his own crucifixion.
12:50
The bruising of his heel is the crucifixion. This curse that's placed on the serpent is the promise of the new covenant.
13:02
This is going to be in the background of what we're looking at today and next week.
13:12
So point number one, the physical seed of Abraham. Let's look back at our text.
13:23
So this is going to be taken from verses 37 to 38, but I want to go back to verse 30 to give it context.
13:31
So verse 30, as he was speaking these things, remember what these things are.
13:37
He is the light of the world, and if you do not believe in him, you're going to die in your sins.
13:42
As he was speaking these things, many believed in him. So Jesus was saying to those who believed him, if, notice the conditional statement, if you abide in my word, then you are truly my disciples and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free.
14:05
They, those who said they believed in him, answered him, we are
14:10
Abraham's seed and have never yet been enslaved to anyone. They're saying this while they're in slavery to Rome.
14:21
How is it that you say you will become free? Jesus answered them. Truly, truly,
14:27
I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin, and the slave does not remain in the house forever.
14:36
So if the son makes you free, you will be free indeed. Verse 37, here's our text.
14:43
I know that you are Abraham's seed, and yet you are seeking to kill me because my word has no place in you.
14:54
Look back at verse 31. So Jesus was saying to those Jews who said they, who, who, those
15:02
Jews who had believed in him, if the conditional statement, if my word abides in you, and look here at 37, he says, because my word has no place in you, he's saying, you're not really believers in me.
15:17
He's saying, I speak the things which
15:23
I seen with my father, therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.
15:35
Now by way of reminder, Jesus, again, he is speaking to a group of Jews who the
15:41
Bible says in verse 30, believed in him. Now imagine if we spoke like that to those in the
15:51
Bible belt who said they believed in him. Why don't we?
15:59
If you believe in Jesus, guess what you're going to do? You're going to follow Jesus. You're going to follow him.
16:07
His word is for you. What Jesus says goes. You're going to put emphasis on what he says in your life.
16:23
The Jews, as well as, the Jews, as we all know, are in fact the physical seed, the offspring of Abraham.
16:33
Would anyone disagree with that? No. The Jews are the physical descendants of Abraham.
16:42
Jesus himself was an Israelite, a physical seed, offspring, descendant, whatever you put there, of Abraham.
16:53
Covenant theology, not classical covenant theology, but Baptist covenant theology, sees the curse given to the serpent as well as the promise.
17:03
We see both, like I was just showing in the text. We see both truths there.
17:08
The serpent was cursed. He is going to have his head bruised, meaning the power was going to be stripped from him, meaning he was going to be in bondage.
17:20
And we see the new covenant. That's something better than the old covenant is coming.
17:28
The new covenant that would pass from the woman to Abraham.
17:34
And that seed, that offspring, that promise that the Old Testament gives us is
17:41
Christ. Now, of course, attached to that promise is the
17:49
Jews, the nation of Israel. And although this group of Jews that Jesus is speaking to claim to believe in him,
18:02
Jesus points to their heart. He's speaking to a group of Jews that claim to believe in him, and he points to their heart.
18:11
What was in their heart? The desire to kill him. As you're reading the sections of chapter 6, chapter 7, chapter 8, all along they want him dead.
18:29
And as we've seen so far in this gospel, again, they want him dead. Why do they want him dead?
18:36
And it's because of the things he was saying. Jesus of Nazareth claimed to be the
18:42
Son of God, that he is God manifested in the flesh, that he, the
18:48
Son of God, came down from heaven. Of course, they didn't know exactly how all this transpired.
18:56
All they know is this man who grew up with them, had flesh and blood just like them, was from Nazareth, is telling them that he is the
19:06
Son of God and that he has come down from heaven. But not only that he has come down from heaven, but that he is the light of the world.
19:11
In the same way that God delivered the Israelites as the light in the wilderness, a cloud by day and a fire by night, he is now the light of the world.
19:21
But not only that, that he is going back to heaven. He's here from heaven as the light of the world, and he's going back to heaven.
19:29
And that if you do not believe in him, you will not have eternal life. That in him, belief in him was eternal life.
19:38
And we looked at last week that Jesus is eternal life. There is no eternal life outside of Jesus Christ.
19:47
And if you don't believe that, guess what? You will die on your sins. When you die, there will be no sacrifice.
19:58
And so they wanted him dead. He is disrupting their system. Look at verse 38 again.
20:09
Jesus says, I speak the things which I have seen with my father.
20:15
Think about that. Seen with my father, with,
20:21
I speak the things that I have seen with him. Where's the father?
20:27
In heaven. Look what he says to them. Therefore, you also do the things which you have heard from your father.
20:42
You're doing what you have heard from your father. I'm speaking what I've seen with my father, and you are doing the deeds that you heard from your father.
20:53
In verse 38, here is where we see the first distinction between my father versus your father.
21:01
When Jesus says, my father, he is speaking about God the father.
21:11
And when Jesus says, your father, he is speaking about the devil.
21:18
He is speaking about the devil. Look at verse 44.
21:28
You are of your father, the devil. No mixed words.
21:36
No pulling punches. He's not holding anything back. He's not holding back because he loves them.
21:46
They want to kill him, but they're family. They are all
21:52
Israelites. Paul Washer made it clear in a sermon long ago,
21:58
I know Dawson loves this, but the person that loves you the most will tell you the most truth.
22:07
What's Jesus doing? He's telling them the truth. Everything that he said about himself is true, and because of the truth, they want to kill him.
22:24
And as we move through the text today and next week, we'll see that more clearly. So point number two, the spiritual seed of Abraham.
22:32
This is taken from verse 39 and verse 40. Verse 39, they answered him, they answered and said to him,
22:40
Abraham is our father. Jesus said to them, notice another conditional statement, if you are
22:51
Abraham's children, here's the condition, you would do the deeds of Abraham.
23:01
If you're Abraham's children, you would do the deeds of Abraham. But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which
23:13
I heard from God, this Abraham did not do.
23:21
In verse 37, Jesus tells them, I know that you are the seed of Abraham.
23:30
I know that you are Abraham's seed. And in verse 39, Jesus tells them, if you are
23:38
Abraham's children, he says, I know you're Abraham's seed, but if you're
23:44
Abraham's children, seems to be something going on here. I know that you're
23:50
Abraham's seed, but if you're Abraham's seed, you see that? It comes down to this.
23:57
Someone can be a physical descendant of Abraham and a spiritual descendant of Abraham.
24:03
Thank the disciples, Paul. They are the physical descendants of Abraham, they're
24:09
Israelites, but they're also the spiritual descendants of Abraham, and we'll get into that.
24:16
You can also be a physical descendant of Abraham and not a spiritual descendant of Abraham, like the
24:23
Jews in our text. And in our case, you and I, who are not born of Jewish descent, we're not
24:31
Jews by birth, we can be a spiritual descendant of Abraham and not be a physical descendant of Abraham.
24:40
And this is because of the faith of Abraham. So turn with me again to Genesis, we're going to look at chapter 12.
24:57
In Genesis chapter 12, we'll read verses 1 through 4a.
25:09
And Yahweh said to Abram, go forth, now here's the command.
25:17
So he's speaking to him by way of a command. Abram at this point has never heard from God, he's a pagan.
25:27
And Yahweh said to Abram, go forth from your land and from your kin and from your father's house to a land which
25:40
I will show you. Hear that command? Listen to the blessing.
25:46
And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great.
25:55
And so you shall be a blessing.
26:03
And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you
26:09
I will curse. And in you, all the families of the earth will be blessed.
26:19
Now, verse 4 shows the obedience here. And Abram went forth as Yahweh has spoken to him.
26:32
The command was to leave everything that he knew and to follow him by going forth.
26:40
You all see that? God gave Abraham a command, and in Abraham's obedience,
26:49
God would bless Abraham and make him a great nation. Now, a lot of people get confused here because of the obedience here.
26:59
There's a command and there's an obedience. For some reason, we get to Christianity and we think that we don't have to obey.
27:06
Ladies and gentlemen, there is no belief without obedience. If you believe, you'll obey.
27:17
If you'll believe, you'll obey. Now, Abraham can't obey without believing.
27:25
In order for him to leave everything that he knew, he had to believe what
27:32
God has said in order for him to obey. Without believing, there is no obedience.
27:39
This goes back to the whole James chapter 2 ordeal. Faith is the root of the tree.
27:51
Our obedience is the fruit. And you will know a tree by their fruit, by their obedience.
28:00
How are people to know that we are Christians? By our love for one another. How do we love one another?
28:06
By not stealing from one another. By not committing adultery on someone else's wife or husband.
28:12
These are good deeds. These are things that we have to obey. You can't be a Christian and go out here and sleep with your brothers and sisters, husbands and wives.
28:21
That's not being obedient. You're showing the fruit. Abraham's obedience has to begin with belief, with faith.
28:30
Abraham believed God. And in verse 3 where it says, And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.
28:38
The in you is from that seed that was passed from the woman to Abraham.
28:46
Speaking of the new covenant. The Israelite nation was a great nation.
28:54
The physical descendants of Abraham. We're not going to argue with that. They were a great and mighty nation.
29:02
When you read the old covenant scriptures, you're reading about the nation of Israel.
29:08
Did they do great things? Yes. Did they screw up? Yes, absolutely. They were a great nation though.
29:17
And that seed that passed from the woman to Abraham through the nation of Israel is the seed from Abraham that blesses all the nations, which is
29:29
Jesus Christ. How has Abraham, the descendants of Israel, blessed the nations?
29:39
They brought forth the seed. Jesus is an Israelite.
29:45
He came from the line, the descendants of Abraham. And every nation that follows
29:53
Christ will be blessed. Romans 1 tells us what happens to a nation that denies there's a
30:01
God, that denies Christ. It gives curses. Cursed is that land. And, ladies and gentlemen,
30:07
America is cursed right now because we have denied who
30:13
God is, and we have denied his son as a nation.
30:20
And if you're not paying attention, this is where the spiritual descendants of Abraham come from.
30:28
So let's turn over a few chapters and go to Genesis chapter 15.
30:34
Genesis chapter 15. I want to read verses 1 through 6.
30:42
So later on after we read this, we'll see the covenant made. And then in 17, you'll see the covenant sign.
30:48
We won't get into all that. But in chapter 15, beginning in verse 1, and we'll read a verse 6.
30:55
It says this, And after these things, the word of Yahweh came to Abram in a vision, saying,
31:01
Do not fear, Abram. I am a shield to you.
31:08
Your reward shall be very great. And Abram said, O Lord, Yahweh, what will you give me as I go on being childless?
31:20
And the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus. And Abram said,
31:28
Since you have given no seed to me, behold, one born in my house is my heir.
31:40
Then behold, the word of Yahweh came to him, saying, This one will not be your heir, but one who will come forth from your own body shall be your heir.
31:54
And he brought him outside and said, Now look towards the heavens and number the stars, if you are able to number them.
32:05
And he said to him, So shall your seed be.
32:12
Then he believed in Yahweh, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
32:23
So by Abraham's faith, Abraham believing what
32:28
Yahweh said about the descendants being as numerous as the stars in the sky, he believed him, although he was childless, very old, he believed him, believed in him, believed him, believed in him.
32:44
He was counted as righteousness. The numbering of Abraham's seed comparisons to the stars are both from the physical descendants of Abraham as well as the spiritual descendants of Abraham.
33:04
The physical descendants are those that come forth from Abraham, and the spiritual descendants are those who have the faith of Abraham, those that believe
33:15
God. If you believe God, you are a spiritual descendant of Abraham.
33:25
And what is it that we are to believe about God? Answer, the promise concerning the new covenant, which was spoken about in Genesis chapter 3, verse 15.
33:36
Turn with me to Galatians chapter 3. Galatians chapter 3.
33:44
And I may mention that I cannot wait to go back through and preach through Galatians again.
33:51
It's such a glorious book, and I feel like I could do it more justice now, how much more so 15 years from now.
34:01
I'm looking forward to the day. Anyways, Genesis chapter 3, we'll read verses 6 through 9.
34:09
Just as Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.
34:16
Now, what did he believe? As numerous as the stars is in the sky, so shall your descendants be.
34:27
Just as Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness, so know that those who are of faith are the sons of Abraham.
34:40
And the scriptures foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith proclaimed the gospel beforehand to Abraham.
34:48
Why was Abraham given the gospel? Because he foresaw the
34:54
Gentiles. God had a plan for the Gentiles. So he preaches the gospel to Abraham saying, all the nations will be blessed in you.
35:05
The seed that's coming from you is what this is speaking about. So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
35:16
The true sons of Abraham, listen, are not the physical descendants of Abraham.
35:22
They're not the Jews. I don't care what the dispensational churches have been saying. They're not the
35:27
Jews. It is the spiritual descendants of Abraham are the true sons of Abraham.
35:33
Those who are following Jesus Christ because Jesus is the light of the world are the sons of Abraham.
35:42
Just like at that tabernacle in the wilderness, when that cloud, when that fire would move, they'd pack up the tent, and they'd follow after the cloud or follow after that fire.
35:52
In order to be under the light, we now follow
35:57
Jesus in that same manner, to be in the light. So when
36:02
Abraham was told to count the stars, know this, if you are in Christ, you were numbered among the stars.
36:12
How precious is that? Thousands of years ago, you were numbered among the stars because he wasn't just speaking about the physical descendants of Abraham.
36:24
It's the physical and the spiritual, and it's much better to be the spiritual seed of Abraham than it is to be the physical seed of Abraham and to reject
36:35
Jesus Christ. In our text, the physical descendants of Abraham are not the spiritual descendants of Abraham because they are seeking to kill
36:46
Jesus for telling the truth, and that, dear saints, is not what
36:51
Abraham did. If you remember, I think it's Genesis chapter 18,
36:57
Abraham was visited by three men, one of them being Yahweh himself, as in a pre -incarnated
37:06
Christ, a theophany, a Christophany. And what did
37:11
Abraham do? Did he pick up stones to stone them? No, he bowed down, first of all.
37:20
No, first he ran to them, bowed down to the ground and worshiped.
37:27
Then what did he do? He fed them, gave them something to drink. He served them.
37:33
He served Yahweh. Abraham served Yahweh. And that's not what's happening to Jesus when he's visiting the
37:44
Jews, his own people. They're not serving him. And as we'll see at the end of this chapter 8, they pick up stones to stone him.
37:56
Point number three, the heavenly seed of God. Verse 41,
38:07
Jesus says to them, You are doing the deeds of your father. And they said to him,
38:14
We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one father,
38:22
God. Notice Abraham's their father. Now God's their father. So something else, there's a transition that's taking place in our text that's easily missed if you're just reading the text and not diving in deep study.
38:39
Here they seem to be pointing back to their being a physical descendant of Abraham and not a pagan.
38:44
Why? Because God chose Abraham as well as the descendants of Abraham.
38:51
Right? We just read that. God's earthly kingdom people are the physical descendants of Abraham.
38:58
So what's taking place here is kind of like an overlap in between the first two points. The Jews are
39:04
God's chosen people. Again, when I say that, I need you to think physical descendants of Abraham because the spiritual descendants of Abraham are also what?
39:14
Chosen. And we'll dive deeper into that next week. However, God through the new covenant has a heavenly kingdom people which are the spiritual descendants of Abraham.
39:26
Those that have the faith of Abraham. Those that believe like Abraham. Those who have been given the faith to believe and we obey how?
39:36
By following Jesus Christ. So they are speaking about one thing, the physical descendants while missing the mark completely.
39:49
The spiritual descendants. Imagine I just this past week
39:55
I bought me a bow and arrow. All right, and I'm getting all the stuff for it.
40:02
I guess actually I'm waiting for it to come this week. A child, it's like a target with a kid's bow and arrow to play with the kids.
40:12
I figure if I get good on that, maybe I can get better with my real one. And my real one, it kind of hurts to pull back some.
40:23
But anyways, I want to get good at shooting a bow and arrow. And so I got me one. I got one to play with the kids.
40:29
And it's the whole idea of hitting the target. When I shoot the arrow,
40:36
I want to hit the target. And really like right now, I'm so new at it. It doesn't matter if I hit the very end of the target.
40:45
Like I can't hit the bullseye. Like right now, that's fine. If I'm only hitting the end. But if I miss the target, and that's actually what the
40:55
Bible calls sin. It's missing the mark. It's missing the target. The target concerning sin is the law.
41:03
When we break God's law, we've missed the mark. We've missed the target.
41:11
And so these physical descendants of Abraham, this physical kingdom of God, have missed the mark completely.
41:22
The target is to be the heavenly kingdom of God, to be with God in heaven, and not just to be under God's kingdom on earth, under his rule and reign, but to be in heaven with God.
41:35
Everyone born is under the rule and reign of God. Everyone. But the target is to be the spiritual descendants of Abraham.
41:51
And the bullseye is Christ. And there is no other lines. You cannot miss the mark.
41:59
And here are the physical descendants of Abraham are aiming at something, and guess what they do?
42:05
They hit it. And that's being the physical descendants of Abraham. And the whole time they've missed the target.
42:12
They've missed the bullseye. The bullseye is standing right in front of them, because it is better to be a part of the heavenly kingdom people, the church, than to be a part of the earthly kingdom people.
42:29
This seems to be the message of the New Testament. Amen? The earthly kingdom people were only, listen, were only a picture of something greater in the
42:42
New Covenant. They were only a picture. Something greater is coming.
42:47
Something greater than Abraham. Something greater than Solomon. Something greater than the earthly kingdom people is here, and it's the heavenly kingdom people.
42:59
To the Jews of that day, and maybe even today, to be outside of the old covenant was to be born of sexual immorality.
43:08
It was to be a Gentile pagan. The Jewish people had the law of Moses.
43:16
They found their comfort in being under the law. The Gentiles did not have the
43:23
Mosaic law, and therefore they were pagan. They were pagans, especially in the eyes of natural -born
43:34
Jews, descendants of Abraham. This, my friend, is what
43:43
Jesus came to remove. He came to remove this. It was the dividing wall of hostility.
43:53
Turn with me to Ephesians 2. Now, I need you to pay attention, because we're getting into the muck and the mire.
44:11
Look at verse 11. Paul's writing to Gentiles. Pagans in the eyes of the
44:19
Jews. He says, Therefore, remember that formerly you, the
44:25
Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by the so -called circumcision, which is performed in the flesh by human hands, remember that you were at one time without Christ, alienated from the citizenship of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in this world.
44:58
But now in Christ Jesus, you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
45:12
For he himself is our peace, who made both groups, which groups?
45:18
Jews and Gentiles. Both groups won and broke down the dividing wall of partition.
45:28
Other translations say hostility. So how did he bring it down?
45:35
By abolishing in his flesh the enmity.
45:40
I'm going to put enmity between your seed and her seed.
45:45
This tells us that Jesus breaks down the dividing wall of hostility by getting rid of the enmity.
46:01
What is that? The law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in him he might create the two,
46:10
Jew and Gentile, into one new man making peace and might reconcile them both in one body.
46:17
One body, not Jews and Christians, but one body to God through the cross, having in himself put to death the enmity.
46:29
I'm going to put enmity between you and the woman. It's what Genesis 3 says. It tells us that he is putting to death the enmity.
46:38
And he came to, and he came and preached the good news of peace to you who were far off, and peace to those who were near.
46:49
For through him we both have one access and one spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but are fellow citizens with the saints and are of God's household, having been built on the foundations of the apostles and prophets,
47:08
Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone in whom the whole building is being joined together and growing into a holy sanctuary in the
47:18
Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the
47:27
Spirit. My friend and co -host on the podcast, Braden Patterson, gives this analogy, and it's so good.
47:40
I had to steal it. Don't worry, I told him I was going to use it. Has anyone been on a construction site where they're building buildings, or they're building a big building?
47:54
And as you're there, you'll see towards the side a trailer. And in this trailer, we'll have the blueprints of what this finished product of the building is going to look like.
48:10
In this analogy, this trailer is the old covenant, and the building is the new covenant.
48:20
The workers that come from this trailer to build the building is the
48:26
Jews. It's the Jews. The Jews took part in building the building.
48:37
And once the building is completed, the blueprints from this house are framed and put into the house.
48:48
There's always a memory of the blueprints. There's always a memory of the old covenant, because there's continuity, and then there's discontinuity.
49:02
And this new covenant, the builders of the new covenant, the
49:08
Jews, they're welcome to enter into the new covenant. They're welcome to enter into this house that they built.
49:18
But also, those that didn't build the house are welcome to enter into the building.
49:33
But that trailer is only going to be there until the building is built.
49:40
Then the trailer is removed. That old covenant system was only until the new covenant system.
49:49
And the blueprints, the continuity, is in the new covenant. Me and Brayden are actually working on a book right now about this.
49:59
Everything that the old covenant has, the new covenant has, it's just greater, it's better.
50:07
Because Jesus Christ is our King. The Jewish people wanted to remain under the law, the dividing wall of hostility.
50:16
They wanted to remain in the trailer. They built the house, but they didn't want to enter the house.
50:22
They wanted to remain in the trailer. And listen, you're talking to a trailer park kid, right?
50:27
I want to just move the trailer into the house, right? Because I love trailers, but that's another part.
50:34
Let me get back to the preaching, sorry. And we have
50:39
Christian groups today who are wanting to rebuild the wall, the dividing wall of hostility.
50:50
And what I've been saying for a long time now is to rebuild the wall is to forsake the gospel. It's to throw away the new covenant.
51:00
It is to move out of the house, back into the trailer. The gospel comes from Genesis 3, verse 15.
51:11
That's where it's first announced. It's the curse of the serpent. That someone's coming from the seed of the woman.
51:19
And Satan, listen to me, because you deceived the woman, her seed is coming to destroy you.
51:26
He's going to destroy you. And yeah, you will bruise his heel, but even in that bruising of the heel is how
51:33
I'm going to bring redemption and salvation to a people who are undeserving, who had nothing to do with building the house.
51:43
You cannot serve both God and the devil. You cannot live in the new covenant and look back at the old covenant.
51:53
That's what the book of Hebrews was all about. We walked through this.
52:02
That's what Hebrews is about. You cannot be in the new covenant looking back to the old covenant.
52:07
That's what the Jews were doing as they were walking to the promised land, which was only about an 11 -day journey because they could not take their eyes off of Egypt.
52:15
They did not enter the promised land, but their offspring did, who knew not
52:23
Egypt. The Jewish people did not want to be a pagan.
52:32
And ladies and gentlemen, listen, since the new covenant has come, those that hold on to the old covenant are the pagans.
52:38
They are the pagans because you cannot have the father without the son.
52:45
Jesus came so that we can be adopted by the father, taken from the devil, and brought into the house of God, the new covenant, like father, like son.
52:59
So the question is this, who is your father? Do you fall among the
53:06
Bible belts that believe that God is everyone's father? The New Testament doesn't teach that.
53:14
The Bible doesn't teach that. Who is your father? Are you serving God or are you serving the devil?
53:22
And we are available to anyone who wants to talk. Let's pray.
53:35
Our God and Father, Lord, we come to you in Jesus' name. Lord, I thank you for your word.
53:41
Lord, I pray I did due diligence. Lord, please, in Christ's name, if there's anyone here that does not know you,
53:50
Lord, Lord, I pray that you use this message to open their hearts and to receive you with joy.
53:59
And again, as always, please use us in this community and in the surrounding areas.
54:07
And Lord, we pray that as we partake, as we are about to partake in your supper, Lord, that there be any in here living in sin.
54:16
Lord, that you convict them. Lord, that they will repent, confess their sins, and look to Christ.
54:31
We pray that you use the supper to grow us into his image in his name.
