For surely it is not angels that He helps, but He helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore He had to be made like His brothers in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Therefore holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider

Therefore as the Holy Spirit says, �Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years.

Therefore I was provoked with that generation and said, �They always go astray in their heart. They have not known my ways.

Also I have sworn in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest.�

Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart leading you to fall away from the living

God. But exhort one another every day as long as it is called today that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

For we have come to share in Christ if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

As it is said, �Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.�

For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left

Egypt led by Moses? And with whom was He provoked for forty years?

Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did

He swear that they would not enter His rest but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.

For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them because they were not united by faith with those who listened.

For we who have believed entered that rest as He has said, �As I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest.�

Although His words, works, were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way, as God rested on the seventh day from all

His works. And again in this passage He said, �They shall not enter my rest.�

Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of the disobedience, again

He appoints a certain day, today, saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, �Today if you hear

His voice, do not harden your hearts.� For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from His works as God did from His.

Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two -edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.

Since then we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God. Let us hold fast our confession.

For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

For every High Priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since He Himself is beset with weaknesses.

Because of this, He is obligated to offer sacrifice for His own sins, just as He does for those of the people.

And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also

Christ did not exalt Himself to be made a High Priest, but He was appointed by Him who said to Him, You are

My Son, today I have begotten You. As He also says in another place,

You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. In the days of His flesh,

Jesus offered up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death.

And He was heard because of His reverence. Although He was a son, He learned obedience through what

He suffered. And being made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey

Him, being designated by God a High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain since you have become dull of hearing.

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God.

You need milk, not solid food. For everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.

But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Therefore, let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings.

The laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits.

For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the

Son of God to their own harm and holding Him up to contempt. For land that has drunk the rain, that often falls on it and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.

But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.

Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things, things that belong to salvation.

For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and love that you have shown for His name by serving the saints, as you still do.

For we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, saying,

Surely I will bless you and multiply you. And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise.

For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes and oaths is final for confirmation.

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of His purpose,

He guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.

We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him.

And to him Abraham apportioned a tenth of everything. He is the first, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.

He is without father or mother or genealogy, neither having beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the

Son of God, he continues a priest forever. See how great this man was to whom

Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils? And those descendants of Levi who received the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham.

But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.

It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior. In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case by one of whom it is testified that he lives.

One might even say that Levi himself who received tithes paid tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when

Melchizedek met him. Now if perfection had been attainable through the

Levitical priesthood, for under it the people received the law, what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?

For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.

For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.

For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.

This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.

For it is witnessed of him, you are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

For on one hand the former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and useless ness, for the law made nothing perfect.

But on the other hand, a better hope is introduced through which we draw near to God. And it was not without an oath, for those who formally became priests were made such without an oath.

But this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him, the

Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, you are a priest forever. Forever. This makes

Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. The former priests were many in number because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently because he continues forever.

Consequently he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

He has no need like those high priests to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered him up himself.

For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a son who has been made perfect forever.

Now the point in what we are saying is this, we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the

Lord set up, not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices, thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.

Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law.

They serve a copy and a shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying,

Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.

For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. For he finds fault with them when he says,
