- 00:15
- Welcome to another edition of Fighting for the Faith. My name is Chris Rosebrough. I am your servant in Jesus Christ.
- 00:22
- This is the channel that compares what people are saying in the name of God to the Word of God. So if you've ever heard that the reason why
- 00:29
- Jesus multiplied loaves and fishes in that feeding of the 5 ,000 miracle out in the wilderness is in order to demonstrate because there were leftovers that God wants to create overflow in your life.
- 00:42
- I'm not making that up. Go ahead and hit the subscribe button down below. Don't forget to like the video.
- 00:48
- Ring the bell. You've been taught false doctrine. Case in point, let's whirl this up.
- 00:54
- We're heading over to Lakewood as we listen to Joel Osteen and his message titled
- 01:02
- Get Ready for Overflow. And this is just abysmal.
- 01:07
- The reason why it's abysmal is on several different levels. But I'll give you just a little bit of a setup here.
- 01:13
- And that is that he's going to be talking about the miracle of the feeding of the 5 ,000.
- 01:20
- Now, aside from the resurrection of Jesus, aside from the resurrection of Jesus, the feeding of the 5 ,000 is the only other miracle that appears in all four
- 01:33
- Gospels. And it's a biggie. It's a vital one.
- 01:38
- And the best way I can say it is in this segment of Fighting for the Faith, we're not going to be able to do it justice.
- 01:46
- So that being the case, what we're going to do here in the podcast version of this episode is we're going to play after this, after the segment, we're going to play a sermon that I delivered a while back titled
- 02:02
- Two Food Miracles, Two Different Outcomes. Two Food Miracles, Two Different Outcomes.
- 02:07
- For those of you watching on YouTube, there will be a link down below so that you can listen to this sermon because I'm not going to be able to do it justice in this account, in this segment of Fighting for the
- 02:21
- Faith on the YouTube channel. So that being the case, I want you to go and listen to that for kind of a fuller thing because there's so much going on here.
- 02:30
- But there's a reason why this miracle shows up in all four Gospels. And that is that this is the quintessential miracle that shows that Jesus is the
- 02:40
- Messiah. And the Jews who were there when Jesus performed the miracles, their eyes lit up and they immediately thought, this is the one.
- 02:51
- This is the one that Moses told us about. Because kind of work out the themes biblically if you think about it.
- 02:57
- You're out in the wilderness. You're the children of Israel, right? So you've just been set free from slavery in Egypt.
- 03:03
- You're in the wilderness. You're hungry. And you say to God, why have you brought us out here to kill us?
- 03:12
- We had meat pots waiting for us when we were slaves and there's no food out here.
- 03:17
- And God answers their grumbling. It wasn't quite a prayer. By giving them a miracle that would last them through their wilderness wanderings.
- 03:25
- And that is that God provided for them daily bread. In the form of manna, which means what is it?
- 03:32
- Manna, right? And that miracle, the feeding of the multitudes of Israel in the wilderness with miraculous bread is recreated by Christ in the feeding of the 5 ,000 when he multiplies loaves and fishes and he's feeding
- 03:50
- Jews out in the wilderness. The parallels between the two are so huge that many of them begin to realize, wait a second, is this the one that Moses told us about?
- 04:03
- We'll show you that in the biblical text. But Joel Osteen, he's a prosperity preacher.
- 04:11
- He's a word of faith guy. He believes that you've got to decree and declare your things and speak them with your faith -filled words and they'll create positive realities for you.
- 04:21
- And so as a result of it, he's utterly clueless that the feeding of the 5 ,000 is all about pointing us to Jesus.
- 04:30
- He instead thinks it's pointing us to prosperity of some kind or another.
- 04:37
- Yeah, it's the best way I can put it is it's a mess. So all of that being said, let's take a listen to Joel Osteen and get ready for overflow.
- 04:48
- Here we go. I want to talk to you today about get ready for overflow.
- 04:56
- I want to talk to you about get ready for overflow. Okay, we can do that.
- 05:02
- Let me get ready for some overflow. Here we go. How's this for overflow? Yeah, I noticed
- 05:11
- I turned there. We got some overflow right there. Yeah, it's just great. Get ready for overflow.
- 05:18
- I want to talk to you today about get ready for overflow. God didn't create us to just get by in life, to just have enough for what we need.
- 05:27
- We're grateful for that, but God is not a get -by God. He's an overflow
- 05:32
- God. God is not a get -by God. He's an overflow
- 05:38
- God. All right, now I'm going to do a little bit of work here. Didn't prepare this, but immediately a particular passage comes up.
- 05:47
- And what I'm going to do is I'm in Accordance. That's the software that I use. We oftentimes get people in the comments saying, what software are you using?
- 05:55
- The name of it is Accordance, and there's a link down below in the description. For every episode of Fighting for the
- 06:00
- Faith, we try to make the resources available. So if you want to know what software I'm using, you can look in the description.
- 06:06
- It's called Accordance Bible, and you can find a link to get there. And they're not a sponsor. This is just a piece of software that I use all the time when
- 06:15
- I'm teaching. So I'm going to look for the word rich, and what I'm going to do is I'm going to change my range.
- 06:21
- And what I want to do is I want to find the word rich, and we're going to define the range now. We're going to narrow it down so you can see how this works as a research tool.
- 06:32
- And what we're going to do is we're going to create a new search parameter, and we're going to call it Proverbs.
- 06:38
- So you can see that if you want to narrow your search down, you can. So we're going to define the range, and, again, we're going to type in Proverbs here.
- 06:46
- And I need to spell it correctly, otherwise it's not going to know what I'm talking about. And I'm going to hit update. And so there we go.
- 06:52
- I've created a new search parameter, so we're going to look for the word rich in the book of Proverbs.
- 06:58
- I don't remember exactly where it is. I know it's toward the end of Proverbs, but there's a passage
- 07:03
- I want you to see. But I wanted to highlight how the research tool works. So we're going to look for the word rich, and the range is going to be
- 07:11
- Proverbs. All right, there we go. And, by the way, a proverb is an amateur verb that lost its amateur status.
- 07:18
- It's now a proverb. Yeah, I write my own humor here, and I know that my editor is groaning.
- 07:24
- Anyway, so I hit the return button here, and I know I'm looking towards the end of this because I do this.
- 07:33
- Okay, because I know how that, you know, whoever hastens to be rich, a faithful man will abound with blessings.
- 07:41
- Whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished. Okay, so you get the idea here.
- 07:48
- I was looking for a particular thing, though, neither rich nor poor. So let me do another search, and so I'm going to look for the word steal.
- 07:57
- Ah, here it is, Proverbs 30. All right, so Proverbs 30, I remembered the word.
- 08:02
- Sometimes you can remember a word in a verse, but you don't remember where it is. So now what we're going to do, we found it in Proverbs 30.
- 08:09
- One minute, 37 seconds later. Editor, fix this.
- 08:15
- Two very boring minutes later. All right, so in Proverbs 30, there is a prayer that we are taught to pray as Christians.
- 08:25
- And consider what it says here. So two things
- 08:30
- I ask of you, Proverbs 30, verse 7. Two things I ask of you, God, deny them not to me before I die.
- 08:37
- Remove far from me falsehood and lying. Give me neither poverty nor riches.
- 08:47
- Feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you, and say,
- 08:54
- Who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my
- 09:00
- God. So you'll note this is in contradistinction to what we just heard
- 09:07
- Joel Osteen say, that God wants to show he's a God of overflow. Yet when
- 09:13
- Jesus teaches us to pray the Lord's Prayer, when you pray, say,
- 09:19
- Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
- 09:26
- Listen to these words. Give us this day our daily bread. Okay. And Proverbs 30 teaches us to, we should shoot for neither being rich nor poor.
- 09:39
- But that God would give us what is needful. All right. So you get the idea.
- 09:46
- Something's off in Joel Osteen's theology. So something's overflowing there.
- 09:53
- But he's not overflowing in a correct understanding of the Word of God. Let me back this up just a little bit.
- 09:59
- So we're at 113 .01. I'm going to just back this up. And let's hear again as he kind of tells us the importance of overflow.
- 10:04
- Keep the house of the Lord in order. But thank you again. Honored to have you here today. I want to talk to you today about get ready for overflow.
- 10:14
- God didn't create us to just get by in life, to just have enough for what we need.
- 10:20
- We're grateful for that. But God is not a get -by God. He's an overflow
- 10:25
- God. That's weird because Jesus teaches us to pray for daily bread. And what did we just read in Proverbs?
- 10:32
- Remove from me falsehood and lying. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me.
- 10:39
- Huh. Lest I be full and deny you and say, Who is the Lord? And lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of God.
- 10:44
- Huh. That's weird because Proverbs is saying the opposite of what he just said.
- 10:51
- Weird. He wants you to have an abundance so you can be a blessing to others. Where you have so much joy, you bring joy everywhere you go.
- 11:00
- You have so many resources that you can help those around you. All right.
- 11:05
- So which text are we exegeting to prove this concept of overflow?
- 11:12
- You may not have seen this yet, but God is about to do a new thing. Wow. Great.
- 11:21
- I'm expecting some shiftings and a breakthrough and thingies and stuff. God's about to do a new thing.
- 11:26
- Are we getting some new wineskins while we're getting the new thing? One touch of his favor will take you from having just enough to having more than enough.
- 11:34
- You need to get ready. Overflow is coming. No, I don't want overflow.
- 11:42
- Overflow is bad. I don't want overflow to be coming. That's terrible. It's disgusting. Okay. You're going to overflow with creativity, with ideas, with talent.
- 11:55
- Where does it say I'm going to overflow with creativity? Do you have a biblical text for this promise? It sounds like you're making promises for God that God never made.
- 12:02
- Is he bound to keep these promises that you're making for him? Overflow with good relationships, with great people in your life.
- 12:11
- Overflow with influence, promotion, resources, where you can come out of debt, where you can lend and not have to borrow.
- 12:20
- God's promised me riches here. Get an agreement with God. Father, thank you that overflow is coming my way.
- 12:31
- Again, this is a weird religion. I don't know what this is. Why do I have to come in agreement with God regarding overflow?
- 12:39
- Overflow is coming. Thank you that you're a more than enough God. In the scripture,
- 12:44
- Jesus was out in the desert teaching the people. It was late in the day. They were all hungry.
- 12:51
- Yeah, this is true. Now, I'm going to read the text first. I've made the claim that this is an important miracle.
- 12:56
- Aside from the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after he was crucified, this is the only other miracle that appears in all four
- 13:05
- Gospels. This is a biggie. It's a huge one.
- 13:10
- And so what we'll do is we'll take a look at the Gospel of John's account of this particular miracle.
- 13:19
- And so we're in John chapter 6. And we'll note the theology in this chapter related to it.
- 13:27
- By the way, this is also the same day that Jesus walks on the water. We'll see this in this miracle.
- 13:32
- But John chapter 6, verse 1 says, After this, Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the
- 13:39
- Sea of Tiberias. And a large crowd was following him because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.
- 13:44
- Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. Now the
- 13:50
- Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. So we know this is in the spring. So we get a little bit of the details.
- 13:57
- So it's in the spring. So lifting up his eyes then and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him,
- 14:03
- Jesus said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat? Now Jesus said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.
- 14:14
- Philip answered him, Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.
- 14:21
- So one of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, Well, there is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?
- 14:30
- And he said, Have the people sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So notice there's green grass.
- 14:36
- It's in the springtime. They're out in a wilderness place. Pay attention to all this kind of stuff. These are not throwaway details.
- 14:42
- So the men sat down about five thousand in number. Jesus then took the loaves and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated.
- 14:53
- So also the fish as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples,
- 14:59
- Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing may be lost. So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.
- 15:09
- When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said,
- 15:15
- This is indeed the prophet who has come into the world. The lights go on.
- 15:21
- It's like, Oh, this is the Messiah. Why?
- 15:28
- Because this is a recreation in Jesus's time of a miraculous feeding of a multitude of people out in the wilderness, which is what
- 15:39
- God did for the children of Israel when they were in their wilderness wanderings between Egypt and the promised land.
- 15:47
- So, you know, and remember the man, a miracle. Again, my sermon on this will kind of clear all this up now.
- 15:53
- So notice that this miracle is pointing to Jesus is the Messiah. Right.
- 15:59
- So perceiving then that they were about to come and take Jesus by force to make him the king.
- 16:05
- Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. And when the evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat and started across the sea to Capernaum.
- 16:15
- It was now dark and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough with a strong wind was blowing.
- 16:22
- And when they had rode about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat and they were frightened.
- 16:29
- But he said, It is I. Do not be afraid. He actually says, Ego eimi.
- 16:34
- He says, I am. That's the name of God that God gave to Moses from the burning bush.
- 16:42
- So I think the ESP does a disservice here. It would be better to translate it. Jesus said, I am.
- 16:48
- Do not be afraid. May phobos that do not be afraid. So they were glad to take him into the boat.
- 16:55
- And immediately the boat was at the land in which they were going. So on the next day, the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.
- 17:09
- Other boats from Tiberius came near the place where they had eaten bread after the Lord had given thanks.
- 17:15
- And when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum seeking
- 17:22
- Jesus. And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here?
- 17:28
- And Jesus said to them, Amen. Amen. Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.
- 17:39
- Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the
- 17:45
- Son of Man will give you to will give to you. For on him, God, the Father, has set his seal.
- 17:52
- Then they said to him, what must we do to be doing the works of God?
- 17:58
- And you'll note, this is a plural. In fact, let me get the Greek up just a little bit higher here so that we can work with it a little more side by side.
- 18:06
- What must we be doing to do the works, plural, taerga, the works to they or the works of God?
- 18:12
- What must we do to be doing the works of God? Jesus' answer, by the way, is brilliant. He says, this is the work, taerga, singular.
- 18:22
- This is the work of God that you believe in him whom he has sent.
- 18:30
- So, you know, I mean, take an account like the Gospel of John and you can see the theological significance of the miracle is that they recognize that Jesus is the
- 18:40
- Messiah. And then the question is, what must we be doing to do the works of God? And Jesus says, listen, the work of God, singular, is to believe in the one whom he has sent.
- 18:51
- And to all who believe, God gave the right to be children of God. Yeah, or God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten
- 19:00
- Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. Or as John says at the end of his gospel, these things are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the
- 19:10
- Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you might have life in his name. You see, this sign was performed so that you would believe in Jesus and trust in him for the forgiveness of your sins, eternal life given as a gift.
- 19:24
- Those are the real promises that we have. And in this life, we are to pray and shoot for neither riches nor poverty.
- 19:31
- Daily bread is enough. Daily bread is enough. So I think you get the point. But let's come back to our text here.
- 19:36
- So now knowing what the significance of it, and by the way, if you want a further, like I said, you want further in -depth teaching on this, my sermon,
- 19:46
- Two Food Miracles, Two Different Outcomes, is going to be quite helpful for you in that regard.
- 19:52
- In going far deeper into the connection between the Old Testament miracle of God giving manna and the feeding of the 5 ,000.
- 19:59
- But let's see what Joel Osteen does, because Joel Osteen, in his theology, the center of his theology is your faith -filled words that create reality, and apparently this miracle is all about overflow.
- 20:15
- Jesus told his disciples to feed them. Well, they were in the middle of nowhere. They said,
- 20:20
- Jesus, all we have are five loaves of bread and two fish. Yeah, no, he's not actually reading the text.
- 20:27
- He's just giving us a summary of it. Jesus told them to have the people sit in groups of 50 and 100.
- 20:33
- The disciples went out and counted the people, put them in different groups. There were 5 ,000 men there, plus the women and children.
- 20:42
- Jesus prayed over the food and it multiplied. As they served the people, the food kept coming.
- 20:48
- When it was all over, they had 12 baskets full of food left over. What's interesting is
- 20:56
- Jesus knew exactly how many people were there that day. He did, yes.
- 21:01
- He had the disciples take the time to count. He could have stopped the food from multiplying as soon as everyone was fed.
- 21:14
- But then again, he could have ordered Domino's. You know, Jesus is God and nothing is impossible for him.
- 21:21
- I mean, he could have ordered Domino's pizza and then brought them from the 21st century and have them deliver it hot and fresh.
- 21:28
- He could have done that too. No, this is not how you exegete a text.
- 21:38
- After all, God is precise. He doesn't make mistakes. God's precise.
- 21:44
- Did Jesus make a mistake? It's not like he miscalculated.
- 21:50
- He accidentally made too much food. On purpose, God designed there to be overflow.
- 21:58
- Now granted, there were leftovers and Jesus had them collected up so that they wouldn't be wasted.
- 22:05
- But where in the text does the theology he's spewing here actually get explained to us?
- 22:14
- Or is this being the significance of the overflow miracle? The significance of this feeding of the 5 ,000 is not the overflow.
- 22:21
- The significance is it showed who Jesus is. It was written so that you would believe that Jesus is the
- 22:28
- Christ. Not that you would believe in overflow. He was showing us his nature.
- 22:35
- He not only wants to meet your needs, he's an overflow God. A God of more than enough.
- 22:42
- And see, this is eisegesis. No, he didn't read the text.
- 22:49
- He doesn't let the biblical authors tell us the importance or the significance of the miracle as it took place in real time.
- 22:56
- And you'll note that nobody who experienced the miracle, who was fed by Christ, sat there and said, you know what this means?
- 23:04
- It means that God wants me to be rich. No, instead, the miracle was performed and they said, that's the
- 23:12
- Messiah. Uh -huh. Yeah, isn't it weird that none of the people who experienced the miracle thought the significance of the miracle was anything that what
- 23:24
- Joel Osteen is saying. When he laid out the plan for your life, he calculated exactly what you would need.
- 23:33
- He knows what it's going to take to get you to your destiny. Then on purpose, he added extra.
- 23:43
- So now we're springboarding, right? So God apparently knew exactly what
- 23:49
- I need and then he decided he was going to add extra. You know why? Well, because there was leftovers with the feeding of the 5 ,000.
- 23:58
- This is not how you do biblical eisegesis. This is nonsense. Needs were met.
- 24:04
- He said, in effect, let me keep multiplying. Let me give them more than enough. He's already designed overflow for you.
- 24:14
- Yeah, he's designed all kinds of overflow for me and I could really do without that overflow.
- 24:22
- It's always pesky and problematic when that overflow shows up. It's just such a mess.
- 24:27
- In fact, I would argue that the sermon that we're hearing is a lot like the videos we're looking at on screen right now.
- 24:35
- Well, we got sewage coming out of the wrong places is the best way
- 24:40
- I can put it. What a mess. I think you get the point. The feeding of the 5 ,000 has nothing to do with God wanting to create overflow in your life.
- 24:50
- It's all about pointing to Jesus, the one God sent, so that by believing in him that you may have eternal life rather than perish.
- 24:59
- It's a free gift. Talk about the real overflow that were promised. New heavens, new earth, life eternal in the presence of God in eternity.
- 25:10
- All given as a gift because Christ has come and bled and died for your sins and for mine. He's calling us to repent of our sin and wickedness and trust and believe in him so that we can be forgiven, given a right standing before God.
- 25:22
- And in this life, it is sufficient to pray as Christ has taught us to pray for daily bread.
- 25:29
- Hope you found that helpful. If so, all the information on how you can share the video is down below in the description.
- 25:37
- Share it on your social media. Let other people know about it. Warn them about the false teacher that Joel Osteen is.
- 25:43
- And I got to remind you that we don't work in overflow here at Fighting for the
- 25:49
- Faith and Pirate Christian Media. We truly do need your financial support to keep bringing these resources to you and warning the body of Christ and then showing you what the scriptures say because what the scriptures say is so much better than what somebody like Joel Osteen would have you believe.
- 26:03
