I'll begin again in verse 1, reading through verse 12. Paul says, now concerning the coming of our

Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you brothers not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed either by a spirit or a spoken word or a letter seeming to be from us to the effect that the day of the

Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed the son of destruction who opposes and exalts himself against every so -called

Thessalonians chapters 4 and 5 I said that there are some who teach that Paul was bringing a new revelation that had not yet been talked about either by Christ or by the

Apostles in their ministry. But as I pointed out when we were in those chapters this had been taught before Paul wasn't delivering a new revelation.

He was just telling the Thessalonians things that he didn't have the chance to tell them when he was with them.

But what we're reading about here is something that Paul has told the Thessalonians before even saying don't you remember that when

I was with you I told you these things previously in 1st Thessalonians 5 he said

I don't have to tell you about the times and seasons because you already know. But then when somebody led them astray by telling them well leading them astray kind of in a loose sense it doesn't seem to be that the

Thessalonians have lost faith or there are people falling away from Christ. That doesn't seem to be the case but rather they've been shaken in mind by this message that has come from a deceiver telling them that the day of the

Lord has already happened. So Paul is going okay well I guess I did need to remind you about some of the things that you're looking for or that you will see rather before the day of the

So don't you remember that when I was with you I told you these things and you know what is restraining him now the lawless one talking about the lawless one again you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time for the mystery of lawlessness is already at work only he who restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.

I don't know who it relates to whether we're talking about an apostasy in the church or we're talking about just the general rebellion of mankind getting worse and worse leading up to the day of Christ maybe that's what the rebellion is in reference to I don't know who the lawless one is

Daniel shut up the words and seal up the book until the time of the end many shall run to and fro and knowledge shall increase and all these things look very familiar we see them stated in other places except for that reference there in verse 1 where it says at that time shall arise

I'm not saying that is actually the the explanation of this particular passage but I like that one there's another theory that the

Holy Spirit is the one who is restraining the man of lawlessness and when the church is raptured and the

Holy Spirit leaves with all the saints who go up to be with the Lord then the spirits out of the way and the man of lawlessness is he reveals himself and he's able to kind of run amok because the spirit isn't here to stop him that's reading into the text though because we don't see that being the case at all and clearly the way that Paul is talking about this he's warning

Christians about something that is going to happen prior to the coming of Christ not the coming of Christ and then the lawless one is going to be revealed that's not the sequence of events that we have going on here so there is a restrainer that is keeping the lawless one from doing his thing right now even though the mystery of lawlessness is already at work we can observe that in the world you people are evil okay you feel the mystery of lawlessness every time you're tempted with something and you want to give in to that temptation and you want to sin that's the mystery of lawlessness at work in your members as long as we inhabit this flesh we are constantly going to be battling against the temptations of the flesh the world bombarding us with all of its different philosophies and ideas attempting to woo us away from the things of God and instead follow after the path of the devil this is the spirit that is at work in the sons of disobedience that Paul talks about in Ephesians chapter 2 the prince of the power of the air this is the mystery of lawlessness at work all around us but but it's not yet lawlessness personified and that's what the

Antichrist really represents he is he is the man of lawlessness demanding the worship of all people that he would exalt himself above all other things in this world claiming to be

God but when compared with God he's nothing once Christ comes this guy's not gonna be able to stand he will be destroyed by Christ with the breath of his mouth that's the illustration that Paul is giving there of just the glory and the righteousness of Christ remember that he he shows his might and power in chapter 1 where he talks about him coming from heaven with mighty angels and flaming fire inflicting vengeance on those who do not know

God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ they will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction but we who have believed in the gospel will behold the glory of his might and we will marvel among those who have believed so so Paul gives a very glorious image of Christ in chapter 1 and he comes back to it again here even in chapter 2 the glory of God is so great that this powerful lawless one will not be able to stand against him he will be wiped out with the breath of his mouth brought to nothing by the appearance of his coming verse 9 the coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders kind of talked about that already

I was working ahead a little bit there verse 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing because they refuse to love the truth and so be saved so these are people who are walking in sin they are believing the lie and the condition of their heart to go after Satan is exposed all the more when the lawless one is revealed why is it that they are so easily deceived in walking after Satan once he comes with all deception and false signs and wonders well because that was the condition of their heart anyway they had the mystery of lawlessness at work in themselves so of course they're gonna follow after the devil because their father is the devil that's what

Saints and that's what Paul is doing here with the Thessalonians he's calling for them to endure do not be led astray into apostasy do not fall away from the faith that was delivered to you and that you believed in that's that's his warning about the rebellion about the great apostasy do not be led astray by the lawless one with all of his false signs and wonders these things must happen prior to the coming of Christ that's what

Paul is warning about so this is a call for the endurance and the faith of the Saints just as John says here now verse 11 then

I saw another beast rising out of the earth it had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon it exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast whose mortal wound was healed it performs great signs even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on the earth telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived and it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain also it causes all both great and both rich both small and great both rich and poor both free and slave to be marked on the right hand or the forehead so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark that is the name of the beast or the number of its name this calls for wisdom let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast for it is the number of a man and his number is 666 now

Thessalonians chapter 1 now before I leave Revelation 13 I got about three minutes left here to finish up this lesson but I wanted to say something about the mark of the beast because this it's caused a lot of confusion in fact one of the more controversial chapters that's happened with John MacArthur in recent years is when he was asked if a person receives the mark of the beast can they still repent and I think that we even asked those kinds of questions because we don't really quite understand what is being meant here by this mark this goes all the way back to Deuteronomy chapter 6 where the
