00:10
Good Saturday morning, people of faith. It certainly has been a wonderful week here with Pastor Aaron Hoke with us and if you got to see
00:20
Monday night's message about the genealogy in Genesis chapter 5 and the encouragement to study the genealogies because there's a lot of really good stuff in those genealogies.
00:35
Perhaps you'll be encouraged by what we're going to do this morning. We're actually going to look at a little snippet of genealogy given in Ruth chapter 4.
00:46
Then we're going to look at it in Matthew chapter 1, that same little snippet of genealogy.
00:52
And then we're going to go back to to talk about where that genealogy started back in Genesis 38.
01:01
So let's look at Ruth chapter 4 and I'm going to begin reading in verse 18 at the end of chapter 4.
01:09
Now this is the genealogy of Perez. Perez begot
01:15
Hezron. Hezron begot Ram. Ram begot
01:20
Ammonadab. Ammonadab begot Nashon and Nashon begot
01:26
Salmon. Salmon begot Boaz and Boaz begot
01:32
Obed. Obed begot Jesse and Jesse begot David.
01:37
And so what's going on here is likely the book of Ruth was written shortly after the time of the judges, during the time of the kings, but about that time of the judges.
01:52
And we're establishing here what God did in a very special way in the life of Ruth and Naomi and Boaz to bring about David as king.
02:05
But yet that story has, is a snippet, a little picture within a much larger and much grander picture.
02:15
In Matthew chapter 1 it says about Perez in verse 3, it says
02:23
Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar. And we'll come back to that in a moment.
02:31
Perez begot Hezron and Hezron begot Ram. Ram begot Ammonadab.
02:37
Ammonadab begot Nashon and Nashon begot Salmon. Salmon begot
02:43
Boaz by Rahab. Boaz begot Obed by Ruth. Obed begot
02:49
Jesse and Jesse begot David the king. And this is going to go on through the
02:56
Christ, through our Messiah, that that snippet was just one piece of the thread going all the way to Christ.
03:07
And in that thread here in Matthew, we see a couple of amazing things. We see, we see
03:14
Boaz was begotten by Salmon by Rahab.
03:21
Remember that Rahab was the harlot that we find in the story of Joshua where she protected the spies and was saved and became a part of not just the nation of Israel, but here in the lineage of Christ, a harlot.
03:44
And then we go back to Perez. Perez's father was
03:51
Judah and his mother was Tamar. Well, that does, on the surface, looks okay.
03:59
But if you go back to Genesis 38, the story of Judah and Tamar is a very, very dark picture in this lineage.
04:14
Tamar was not the wife of Judah. She was the daughter -in -law of Judah.
04:24
His oldest son, Er, died because he was evil. And then the next in line,
04:32
Onan, was to marry her and produce offspring, and he refused.
04:38
And so he was killed by God. And so the next in line was supposed to be promised to Tamar, and it didn't happen.
04:53
And so through a situation of deceit and of lust,
05:02
Judah produced children with Tamar. And yet, at the same time, we have
05:14
Tamar and Judah and Perez, an illegitimate child, is in the lineage of Christ, our
05:24
Savior. And so it is a reminder to us of a couple of things.
05:31
First of all, it is all of grace. There is none of us who, by our birth, deserve any goodness of God, but yet we receive it.
05:42
We do not deserve anything but death as we are born in sin. We also see that God is a loving and righteous
05:54
God who brings glory to Himself in in ways that we do not understand.
06:00
His ways are above our ways. We also see that a child who is born because of their parents' sin, whatever sin that may be, is still has has worth and significance.
06:20
And it just may be that God may choose someone of who is born that way to change the world as the
06:31
Lord sees fit. So let's remember these things today and ponder them as I pray.
06:40
Lord, thank you for this day, and thank you for this wonderful week of messages on the eternal issues that we find in Genesis.
06:52
And thank you for Pastor Hoke, and thank you for this church. May you be glorified in us and through us this day.
07:00
It's in your Son's name, Jesus, we pray. Amen. Have an excellent day, people of faith.
