- Does the Holy Spirit communicate with us personally today? Thanks, Jeff. Thank you,
- 00:05
- Ronnie, for the question. I would say yes, the Holy Spirit communicates to us personally today in a certain way through the written words of God that we have in Scripture.
- 00:16
- That's how God speaks to us with certainty by His Spirit. Peter says in regard to Scripture and Revelation, he says, holy men of God spoke as they were carried along by the
- 00:26
- Holy Spirit. So the Holy Spirit is the origin of this inspired text, and He speaks through that text to us today.
- 00:35
- I'll give you an example. When Jesus is being challenged in a question about the resurrection, Jesus says to the
- 00:43
- Jews of His day, have you not read what was spoken to you by God?
- 00:48
- And then He quotes the Old Testament, words that were spoken to other people in history. But Jesus actually holds them accountable for what
- 00:56
- God spoke in the past by quoting Scripture. So, have you not read what was spoken to you by God?
- 01:03
- So God does still speak by His Spirit today through His Word with certainty. However, do I believe that it's very clear that God does very much interact with us on a personal level by His Spirit speaking to us in a way?
- 01:19
- Yes. Every time I sin, right? The conviction of the
- 01:25
- Holy Spirit where God's grieving me, convicting me over my sin, that's God speaking. It's not an audible voice, but I can sense
- 01:31
- His presence and I sense what's going on, and He's grieving me, causing me to hate my sin. God coming in and encouraging me through His Word by His Spirit, that's very intimate, very personal.
- 01:43
- Or there's been so many times in ministry where I got a serious awareness of some thing that I shouldn't have had.
- 01:53
- I had an awareness something was going on and it was like God was giving me a sense something is really off.
- 01:59
- Now, you have to always be careful with things like that, of course, because you can be taken away by your emotions, you can be wrong, you can think you have a gut, you can be wrong about that.
- 02:08
- That's why even that gut or that leading needs to be tested against the very words of God. The certainty is in the revelation of the
- 02:16
- Holy Spirit of God. That's what Peter says. These are words from the Holy Spirit of God. God, by His Spirit, carried people along to write these things or to say these things.
- 02:24
- That doesn't mean that God doesn't very much move and interact in us today, but are we to be looking for an audible voice from God now in the age of the new covenant with Scripture now complete, the inspired words complete?
- 02:37
- I'd say no, that's not part of the normative experience of Christians today at all. The certainty is here, it's found grounded in the words of God.
